I am here :-) and would love to continue with my old character concept with a little bit of maneuvering.

ROCK ON!

So by my count, you  still have five players (including me).

And Iíd prefer to play this concept ... as itís one I havenít had a chance to play with.

I'd probably work up a new concept. This one was something of an experiment in "what can I do with an all-bioware street sam," more mechanical than personal.

I'm going to keep the concept but I might remake the character (I love making SR5 characters....lol).

Would you folks like to use the karma creation system to create your characters?  I feel it is a bit less confining than the priority system.

I do like karma creation better. Even if the priority system is awesome at making overpowered one-sided characters :)

I made Keys with Priority, and as Iíd like to continue playing Keys, Iím happy to keep him as is, and let anyone making new characters do so by any method negotiated with the GM.

Ah.  Well, we can remedy that a bit.  Are you adverse to using Chummer?  It's a 3rd party Shadowrun character creation program.

https://github.com/chummer5a/c...releases/tag/5.205.0

At the bottom is a zip link: https://github.com/chummer5a/c...0/Chummer5.205.0.zip

Create a chummer folder on your computer and drag all the files from the zip to there, double-click the .exe to run it.

If not, I could talk you through the creation of your character using the Karma system.

Failing that, you can still use the priority system to create your character.  It is up to you.

There are a lot of things to like about karma creation, but it screws over certain metatypes with big stat bonuses (i.e., trolls) because of the stat scaling. Lifepath creation is fun, but hella clunky. I know Bean was originally built via sum-to-10, which makes for very powerful out-the-gate characters but, as previously mentioned, leads to powerful specialists. I personally feel like this is somewhat baked into the game, but I'm willing to do whatever. It's just worth noting that karmagen characters are likely to be noticeably less powerful than their priority/sum-to-10 counterparts.

Well, just for fun I redid Catchy in karma, or rather I copy pasted the Priority Catchy I had in chummer to see... and she's 200 karma over. Because, yes, Catchy was built as a very focused specialist.

Now I'm going to build a new Catchy, with the same core concept, using the karma system. A more balanced Catchy, just to see where it leads me... But if past experience is a guide I'll like the new Catchy better :)

And I'm not doing rigging, and I feel that while drones come in handy they are not a must have.

I have Chummer and have used it for base creation, but find using a book so much more enjoyable. Tiz OK, I would be completely OK just playing as is if nothing else. I was thinking of changing a few things around to make the character a bit more money hungry. Kind of an all around mage, but can summon some hefty spirits.

I just need to know the limitations/benefits of Fetishes.

And that is something folks should take into consideration when deciding creation system to use.

One fetish can be for a spell category, and multiple spells can be limited to the same fetish.

The type of fetish is important, not a specific thing.  So any bird feather, not 'a feather from the first parrot I owned'.

Fetishes are not foci, it doesn't count towards the foci limit, and it is not astrally active.  It's a totally mundane item.

I feel that the karma system deals with the biggest problem I have with trolls.  They don't start out as stupid combat monsters that I have to try to not kill the whole party while dealing with them at the same time.  I realize that is what trolls are supposed to be but every time I get a troll player They are so hard to even damage that the rest of the party is in danger of dying before the troll even takes a scratch.

As a player I like the karma system because it does encourage more balanced and believable (imo) characters for me.

I think i am just going to go with ground vehicles for right now.  That gives me room to grow....:)  Iris is supposed to be a street kid anyway....lol

In reply to Iris (msg # 48):

Yeah, but if you want to play a strong human with a karma build, it costs the same as building a smart or intuitive one. Getting a human to an "average runner" Strength of 3 costs 25 karma. Getting a troll that same two-point boost costs 65. Karma buy functionally forces trolls to play significantly against type or spend most of their starting karma on attributes.

shrug It's all part and parcel of the cost scaling and the spend-points-from-a-pool with flat costs versus buy-with-the-scaling costs. With priority, it's really hard to avoid min-maxing because you save so much karma down the road. It's not unique to Shadowrun, of course. Also, there's no "right way" to do it.

I'm probably actually going to try and scrape something together with the life module system, bookkeeping be damned, because I've never really gotten to use it as anything other than an experiment.

Grr, for some reason only the chummer nightly is working for me and it isn't letting me customize my turret.

BTW, riggers are EXPENSIVE!!!  lol

Try starting out with a 2nd Hand rigger-ware, if that is allowed. Costs more essence, but should be a nice savings.

Just so everybody knows, Sleight does not have max on counterspelling dice. I think 4 only.
