All of you have expressed an interest in continuing. 12 people works out to 3 groups of 4 characters, which is rather neat and tidy I think. I'm going to work out your contacts overlap (again), and then get those groups back together. I've switched the group # for the runs we had on the go to hide them. I'm just going to do a flat reboot of the runs, obviously they'll be a bit different from what I had started. Everything should be fresh. The premise remains the same, the City of Boston is in lockdown. No traffic gets in or out. Some corporations seemed to have had inside information, and fled the city ahead of the lockdown, while others remain trapped with many of the city's denizens. Business is still business, however, and there is money and reputation to be made. If you need more time to tidy things up, say so. Let me know where your characters stand, if you haven't already. Almost good to go here! Also, new OOC thread.

https://github.com/chummer5a/c...releases/tag/5.205.0 At the bottom is a zip link: https://github.com/chummer5a/c...0/Chummer5.205.0.zip Create a chummer folder on your computer and drag all the files from the zip to there, double-click the .exe to run it. If not, I could talk you through the creation of your character using the Karma system. Failing that, you can still use the priority system to create your character. It is up to you.

Now I'm going to build a new Catchy, with the same core concept, using the karma system. A more balanced Catchy, just to see where it leads me... But if past experience is a guide I'll like the new Catchy better :) And I'm not doing rigging, and I feel that while drones come in handy they are not a must have.
Sleight player, 36 posts Elvin Shaman Tue 28 May 2019 at 15:34 |
I just need to know the limitations/benefits of Fetishes.
The Big D GM, 75 posts Tue 28 May 2019 at 15:42 |
And that is something folks should take into consideration when deciding creation system to use.
The Big D GM, 76 posts Tue 28 May 2019 at 15:47 |
One fetish can be for a spell category, and multiple spells can be limited to the same fetish. The type of fetish is important, not a specific thing. So any bird feather, not 'a feather from the first parrot I owned'. Fetishes are not foci, it doesn't count towards the foci limit, and it is not astrally active. It's a totally mundane item.
Iris player, 31 posts Tue 28 May 2019 at 16:05 |
As a player I like the karma system because it does encourage more balanced and believable (imo) characters for me. I think i am just going to go with ground vehicles for right now. That gives me room to grow....:) Iris is supposed to be a street kid anyway....lol This message was last edited by the player at 16:06, Tue 28 May 2019.
Bean player, 40 posts All-natural, but the best natural money can buy. Tue 28 May 2019 at 16:20 |
Yeah, but if you want to play a strong human with a karma build, it costs the same as building a smart or intuitive one. Getting a human to an "average runner" Strength of 3 costs 25 karma. Getting a troll that same two-point boost costs 65. Karma buy functionally forces trolls to play significantly against type or spend most of their starting karma on attributes. shrug It's all part and parcel of the cost scaling and the spend-points-from-a-pool with flat costs versus buy-with-the-scaling costs. With priority, it's really hard to avoid min-maxing because you save so much karma down the road. It's not unique to Shadowrun, of course. Also, there's no "right way" to do it. I'm probably actually going to try and scrape something together with the life module system, bookkeeping be damned, because I've never really gotten to use it as anything other than an experiment.

Well, Catchy is actually excellent at unarmed combat, but that's not going to do much of anything to any decently armored street samurai (it's not like her strength is anything to brag about). She has plenty of nuisance spells, but no actual combat spells. She won't touch guns. For what it's worth her defenses are excellent, and she would actually be quite good at throwing grenades, if she had any ... :) Oh, and she follows Cat, so even if she could take down a bad guy she won't unless she's bleeding. She's a mystic adept with superb agility and excellent reflexes, it wouldn't take much for her to become a dangerous katana wielder, or a superb marksm... markscatw... markscatelf, or a combat mage, or even a grenadier, she just isn't any of those things... yet.

I’ve been thinking on how to alter him some, but it seems I’m quite attached to this build. You can list Keys as another ‘Fully Awakened Astral and Magical specialist’. Also ‘High Charisma’ with good social skills. N/PC’s might be left with the impression of a Corporate Trained wage-mage, laying low in the shadows.

The reason I ask is, I was thinking of a social infiltrator, so less about negotiating our pay, but the person who gets sent in somewhere for recon, dressing up as people, mimicking voices, faces, that kind of thing. As I'm trying to think the type of character I would enjoy playing as, whilst avoiding too much overlap with people. Some redundancy is useful, too much is stealing someone else's thunder.

Given her construction via life module, Bean's not going to be as great at that stuff as a traditionally costed character (never mind a freaking social adept shakes head at how broken those can get). Nonetheless, that kind of social infiltration is her primary way to contribute to a team outside a meet. Like I said, she's not as specialized as Painted Man seems to be, and while she's got a lot of points in knowledge skills (another byproduct of the life module system), those points are not distributed as broadly.

He hired Sleight to smuggle him into Boston, and arrived here a few days ago. Therefore he is without much in the way of contacts or resources ... or a place to stay. But he’s ready to rock’n’roll. Unless anyone contacts me about connecting their character to Keys, I’ll just look at making friends and influencing people as I go. But if anyone has a reason that Keys May have specifically come into Boston ... through the quarantine ... please suggest it to me. I am happy to backstory some connection with another PC that caused Keys to come here. This message was last edited by the player at 05:02, Sun 02 June 2019.

Two Smuggler types (1 rigger, 1 Mage) ... Two Faces ... A sneaky, agile cat-elf thief ... More muscle wouldn’t go astray, or an Alchemist Mage to help us with Preparations and Foci. I dunno if we were going with the NPC Hacker or not ... but that slot is infilled PC-wise

Sleight: Shaman, Smuggling/Illusion/Heal Specialist. Keys: Aakened, Combat and Astral specialist. Iris: Vehicle Rigger / Smuggler. Loren: Combat Rigger. Catchy: Mystic Adept of Thievery (Low Damage Close Combat). Bean: Face and Infiltrator. Tiger Lily: Street Sam. Bester: ?? Painted Man: ?? We could easily do with more muscle, in my honest opinion. Sams/Body Guards/etc are the backbone of a Shadowrun team. I feel we have magic covered, and vehicles/rigging.

Or we can split up into two groups. If everybody decides that we want a 3rd party technomancer I am good with that, just remember they will want a cut of the run. If Bester/Painted make a Decker and a Tank, then I think that would be best from an all around perspective and we use the 3rd party decker when we have to.

Being as Iris and Sleight are smugglers, and therefore experienced with being subtle ... and Bean is a smooth talker, not a fighter ... I would suggest that the Adept sneaky Thief, Catchy would work well with them. They would be Team Subtle. As Keys is a Combat Mage, and Lorex is a Combat Rigger ... I am suggesting that they be Team Not-so-Subtle. And be joined by other characters along such lines.

Should I keep the awesome one I have for the future in case I want drones? -or- Should I get rid of it because background wise there is no reason Iris would have bought it? -or- Should I trade it in for a lesser one because I could see her having a smaller one laying around "just in case"? And actually I just answered my own question, if I trade down I can add a vehicle mod that I really wanted but didn't have the cash for....lol.

Fast casting two Stunbolts Sleight should be able to take down any non-mage in a pass. Should being the operative word there as we all know how dice rolls don't always end up being what they should. He should be able to do that without taking drain damage himself. Otherwise he can throw a pretty high force Ball Lightning to take care of groups and toys without using reagents, but with reagents it goes high enough that it might even tickle a troll in max body armor. Stun Bolt is for the trolls in max body armor though. Ball Lightning is also to slow the bad guys down on the Initiative train, specially if they are all grouped together in some hallway or ally.

If we do go for 2 teams, then there's room for 2 different Faces, so reviewing Painted Man to see if he needs any revisions, or a complete rebuild. There was a character I built for another game a while ago called Gonzo, who was an extreme journalist inspired by Gonzo reporting, who is in the shadows to understand why runners do what they do, whilst recording and selling his experiences for extra money on the side.

Bean fell into running sideways because of personal connections and the fact that her employers kinda sorta evaded laws constantly and needed her to check the language on their paperwork. And eventually to chat up drivers. And then Iris needed her to sit in on a meeting, and Bean needed Iris to get away from the Irish mafia. And now she's only working two half-shifts for the shipping company and instead pays her rent mostly with, uh, "freelance consulting."
Bester player, 15 posts Wed 5 Jun 2019 at 23:47 |
Which of the 2 teams he will be in, He is a "lets get in silent" first and if the shit hits the fan. Time to rock. As far as "Friends with other runners", I presume for game ease we all know each other through small jobs here and there prior to the game start. Or at least have some Fixer/ Fence in common. I do like the Idea of all being part of a single large "Runner group", and that we all do our parts of whatever run is set up, as mentioned doing more than one run, and each of us helps out with what we are specialized in when the time comes up. Perhaps we will have a single focus for a while if something "big" shows up. (wink Big D :) ) PS- i don't seem to post as often as some of you.. or more precisely, there is more of a time gap for when i can get online, but i will be watching the chat during the day a bit but work don't allow me time to look in. but once i am home I will try to check alot.

There are some press credentials that are free, such as those given out to an event photographer, but legitimate cred costs nuyen. A press pass (which is registered to your SIN, of course) can be purchased from any media organization that’s willing to have you, giving some special access to areas. The press can enter a crime scene (but will always have an officer at their side to make sure they don’t disrupt anything), get into government functions, attend high-class parties (as long as they’re working) and gain some bonus legal protections. Note that many corporations don’t have a “freedom of the press” law in their corporate charter, so this is by no means a “get out of testimony free” card, but every real reporter carries one. Availability 6, Cost 50¥ PROCAMS AND SMARTCAMS Procams are cameras, large and bulky ones, but can have a rating (and therefore a capacity) of up to 12. Availability 4, Cost Rating x 250¥ SmartCams increase the limit of the attached camera (normally equal to its rating) by 1 (external) or 2 (internal) while connected to a DNI (a datajack to get the full +2) External: Availability 6, Cost 200¥ Internal: Availability 8, double the cost of the camera I haven't built a camera recently, so you'll have to judge if it's worth stuffing 12 points of stuff into one, and then having to mount it on a drone, or getting a cameraman to follow you with it. Or carrying it on your shoulder. SmartCam: well, honestly, how many dices is your camera going to roll to need the extra limit ?

I suspect that’s already a major endeavour by many corps. I often ask my SR players: why does your character run? Hacker, magician, rigger, muscle ... most any Corp would provide a Corp SIN and worthy wage for most any character in this game. If Gonzo wanted to use a mage with Trid Illusion to make instructional or educational shows, he could do so very viably without doing it illigally.

Law enforcement is just as tough as any criminal gang, and criminal gangs usually loose. So the consequences and effort are rarely worth it. And if it was as easy to have ‘the freedom’ as that, I suspect a lot more people (real world and fantasy) would be enjoying it than are. I guess, as always, we chalk it up to this being a fantasy setting, without those consequences ... we just glamourise it.

The teams don't have to be balanced, per se, just less or more limelight and different style/difficulty of missions. One of my most enjoyable games back in college was having a group of only 3 (Sam, Tank, Decker) working personal security. They were Shadowruns in all but name, but our job was not to be stealthy...at least normally. Then one of our clients got himself 'killed' fighting some Black ICE, but my character was on hand with a resuscitation patch and rolled some crazy target number (think it was a 21) to get the guy to survive. Then it was all about stealth and keeping the non-dead client alive and hidden until the right time.

How do we feel about people playing more than one character? And I'd be honest the group allocations seem pretty random, any runners going to have some ability at stealth if they're going to be successful. Would it not make sense to split the group according to covering some of the basics? Like each group gets a sammy, a face, some kind of magical helper and some kind of B&E expert? That tends to make it more successful. Right now you've got almost all the magic and B&E in one group and all the muscle in the other...

Personally, I would like them to all be a big team with Gonzo and Bean finding jobs. The GM gives us 3-4 options of Runs to go on and the characters decide who goes on what run. However, that may not be what others or the GM wants to do....but its something to talk about in OOC till the game starts.
Chromium player, 18 posts Tue 11 Jun 2019 at 14:42 |
I agree a big flexible team is better, I just can't imagine building a character without at least some stealth l, so I suppose that's my problem :D an investigative reporter who can't break into peoples offices to get the scoop is kind of strange in my mind...lol. And I'd be surprised if the combat mage doesn't have at least access to a spell or spirit that can help him hide :D

I would like everybody to be looking for jobs, but bring them back to the team, let our Negotiating experts do their job to get the details and decide who goes on what job. Probably not going to be taking more than a job a day, since we really should be doing leg work on each job to make sure we are not getting screwed...but we could also have reinforcements available on every job in case things go sideways if we operate as a big team. Half the team does one job, while the other waits in the shadows as back up. Then we can switch out for the next job. Gonzo/Bean/Hacker should be able to do leg work for the next job during the current job. Kinda work it like a basketball team with a bunch of talent on the bench.
Chromium player, 19 posts Tue 11 Jun 2019 at 18:08 |
Yeah, planning and acquiring the specialized gear for some jobs will take a few days, not to mention healing time, study time etc. That said Chromium needs every job he can get! He has debts to pay and a high flying girlfriend to impress!
In the game world this makes a lot of sense on rpol it does not. One run can take literally weeks if not longer I'm not super excited about watching other people play for weeks at a time. I'll let Big D decide what he wants to do in the end but I'd imagine if we have multiple groups we'll end up with multiple runs just so everyone can play.
Iris player, 76 posts Tue 11 Jun 2019 at 20:06 |
Pretty much this is my opinion too. :) I personally want to run with Gonzo because I think the concept is one of the more awesome and original ones I have seen in a game (and there was a lot of animosity toward the concept). :) I have the closest connection with Bean so I would like to run with them too but in the end it really doesn't matter to me, I just want to play with a good group. Honestly I don't think we have so many players that we HAVE to make two teams even.
Sleight player, 66 posts Elvin Shaman Tue 11 Jun 2019 at 20:50 |
That is the normal stuff. If we play as one big group and pick and choose who ends up on the job, then the job will probably have a total payout # that the runners split. The example in the book about stealing a sword from a gang is probably easily accomplished by no more than two of our current PC's...and probably would be posted as a $10k job as a group. Stealing the same sword from a Mafia Lt strong hold would be posted up as a $150k job. Sure, 1-3 sufficiently skilled and lucky characters could get in and out with the sword and split that big pot, but with no back up a single hitch could mean failure and/or death. Previous editions payed out like $5000 for the job total and characters weren't expected to live past 3 game sessions ;-)

Ok, I've never done it in Shadowrun, but I remember a memorable game of Call of Cthulhu that ended with, strangely enough, Boston being erased from the map while the PCs were making new (and very comfortable) lives for themselves in Europe. As NPC, of course, since the GM demanded we hand back our character sheets for ritual burning :)

The cash payout system for 5E is pretty nice in my opinion, unless you owe wads of cash to black site hospital who 'owns' your ware. My characters generally got pulled into the shadows from other more legitimate work or just started life without a SIN and never wanted one. Sleight could do legitimate work, but it certainly doesn't pay the bills and allow for as much study and research time. Even then, he has a tribe to take care of back in Maine, so anything he can spare goes there.

Lol, I've found a shotgun with frechette rounds is more reliable to hit for a mage and makes it less likely people realize you're a mage and go 'gank the mage!' Other option is a grenade launcher full of smoke grenades and tear gas...because I hope you all brought your gas masks? Anything to make them think you're not a finger wiggler!

Matter of style I guess, but not really an option. Sleight has a pistol so he can look like a Sam with his armor and Helmet with respirator (not a full gas mask, sorry). I had originally built Rasputin out as a more traditional Street Sam. Haven’t quite caught up on all the banter but it seems that might still be a useful skill set to bring to the team. Let me know if there’s something we might be lacking. I’m a pretty versatile player so I don’t mind picking up most needed skills. I’ll be a little rusty on SR5 since it has been a year or two since I’ve played. Been doing Blades in the Dark with my RL group. Shouldn’t take too long to pick back up though :) [Edited to add] Now that 2 seconds after posting I find the skills thread, clear lack of decking. Are we for-going the matrix aspect as part of play or shall I fill out that role? Deckers can be a lot of fun. This message was last edited by the player at 15:18, Fri 14 June 2019.

Yes, we are seriously lacking in the Decking department. There is a technomancer NPC contact that it seems pretty much everybody has taken that was kind of filling that void. If you are into decking, as a player, then go for it. If not, then we will just have to 'hire' a decker for every run, which will grind into our profits, but I don't have a problem with that.

Just the weird part of chance. Heck, I once rolled for my character to pick up a magical sword in Palladium and rolled a 3 in 1,000,000 (5 0's in a row 10 sided die, then a 3). But Howling Shadows (p.45) will tell you how much more expensive a genetically enhanced pet is compared to a regular one. Which, if you don't know expensive it is, isn't much help. I guess you can go back to SR4 and Running Wild, and lift their price table, monthly upkeep cost, and minimum lifestyle. Although I'd really like to know what kind of pampered dog they were thinking of when they required a middle lifestyle to keep them.

Not to mention higher costs of keeping the dog, bigger dogs have more expensive health issues, usually. Also, larger dogs require more exercise. Sleight, Keys, and Bester went up stairs, out of LOS with the rest of the bar as far as I understand. The Cheers bar from the TV show didn't have a place to view upstairs/downstairs that I ever saw (only watched about 5 episodes). Unless Iris went to the base of the stairs and looked up I don't think that Sleight becoming visible would have been able to be seen. Not that I don't want Iris to see Sleight, just that he waited till he was out of LOS from the rest of the patrons of the bar to drop the spell. Kinda doesn't want to have to deal with those Orks or anybody else spying on people. He doesn't know if the Orks are working for Jack or for the bar or what... :-P

He is coming back in from the woods... Thus explaining his absence for a bit. I haven’t picked up a lifestyle yet in case people had plans for shacking up in groups/teams. So long as you can put up with a guy who really likes his hikes, fresh game meat, and eventually some suspiciously lupine dogs. Strangely he cleans up well though, not dedicated face well, but enough to survive a social encounter or two. This message was last edited by the player at 04:29, Thu 18 July 2019.

@Bean: Thanks to a comment from someone I am actually heavily debating taking the hit to Edge to switch from Human to Elf which would actually bump me to being much closer to that. Not socially competent per say but socially passable for the most part. @Chromium: Avoiding the NAN for my character. I am a Canadian in IRL and the amount I know and deal with Native stuff puts playing the character just on the edge of comfort. No problems with other people doing it just a bit odd for me personally.

I am sorry to be a pain, but in the 'Current Events' thread, could we please have a basic timeline for Recent Boston? (for those of us who do not know the scenario) - When (how long ago) and Why (at least the officials/media reasons) was Boston 'Locked Down'? - When (how long ago) did this dragon break free of MIT+T? - What is Fenway Park? is it the baseball stadium you later mention? - What and Where is NeoNET Tower 4? - ... and what status are those two in now? How did the two scenes play out? - Is Knight Errant the primary Law Enforcement here in Boston?

Fenway Park is a baseball park, and it is currently in shambles, having had a large dragon crash land into it. It's under guard by Knight Errant and Ares security. NeoNET's corporate structure is a business park with several towers. #4 houses the main matrix connections for Boston, and a good portion of the North American eastern seaboard. While the tower was badly damaged, the important bits are all in the sub-basements. It's currently under a severe security cordon. The NeoNet complex is downtown Boston. The dragon broke free approximately 2 weeks ago. Approximately, for while its crashing into Fenway, and attack on NeoNET, are known qualities, there's a possibility the dragon was freed before then. Two weeks is the closest one can get. The lockdown is officially to calm the city after the events of the dragon's escape and attack. There were riots by the local homeless population, and rumours of a virus spreading lend some credence to the rumours that the lockdown is not going to be temporary.

Also, quick IC question before I grab a sniper rifle does anyone else have the ability/interest in playing an overwatch/sniper type for this mission? I am more than able to go in door to door, was the reason Chromium was built the way he was, but this is a mission where a good sniper might be worth more to take out targets of opportunity who are smoking and get us in easy?

Another option I just thought of would be to use Control Thought on Slim and give him instructions on what to do, then the guy with Slim out on a smoke break and just have him get real interested in the wall. Then have Sleight cast Flight and Imp Invisibility on Slim and have Slim fly away to the previously instructed location. Yeah, a lot Sleight specific, but if everybody else is on back up, that could be Plan A. Plan B is take down the bad guys with stun stuff and then grab Slim, etc, etc.

You could probably use at least part of Sleight's plan. Wait for the two to come out to smoke, make the one guy face the wall, or at least look away. Then you don't have to shock him, makes less noise, grab Slim, Iris has a plan to get in and out with a good chance of not being spotted. Only random element then is what do the other wonks in the house do. Could be the other part of your plan deals with them in some way so that they don't get to chase you.

If we can figure out where the other two known associates are located during the 'smoke breaks' then we can target them all at the same time. Taking them all down in a single surprise attack that is relatively silent would be optimal.

That being said, I've been a bit silent and distracted by RL the past 7 days or so with being sick and stuff, but I'm still around and pushing to get myself active again. I can support with decking and even B&E stuff. No slouch with automatics either. I've got some solid tech I'm carrying around, so even if they manage to geek the over-eager decker you guys are able to pick up the stuff and get parts of my job done anyway. I've got jammers, bug scanners, tag erasers, miniwelder, autopicker, etc. Even a fun little Faceless device. Little things that'll help make things go a bit smoother. Like I mentioned in game thread, even if we've just got a couple hours for set-up IG and there's room in the truck I can drop into VR and hit it from the Matrix side. Probably a little better in this scenario just in case I spook them. Hitting an unsuspecting place and making a little noise, but not hitting it for the job for a day or two can usually be fine. Hitting kidnappers while they're waiting out a flood would probably be a little more volatile. Even if we run out of room in the truck, might be able to get a place nearby where I can lay it out for a bit then head out on my own after the grab is done. Just not 100% ideal, because I am a slouch for driving with a measly 4 dice :)

I am not 100% sure on each capabilities, but i think i have you mostly figured out SO I suggest A) Physical Ground Surveilence -Myself, Chromium, Oberon and Bean. (possibly Iris rigging) B) Astral Surveilence - Sleight, Keys. C) Matrix/ Rigger support - Iris and Rasputin, (I think your both riggers though??) We need to get eyes on Slim and figure out the lay out of surrounding buildings. Get way routes ( If not into the lake, I do like that idea). I know we all have our own ideas and they all could work we just need to DO one.. and have a back up. I'm not even sure if we agreed on a Pay for the job yet..

Based on log-ins, we're looking at the following people still active: Bean (probably ;) ) Bester Chromium Iris Keys Oberon (probably) Rasputin Sleight That's a pretty reasonably sized team. How do we want to handle planning, though? This is where SR and investigative games always seem to die online, because it gets too easy to just wait for somebody else, and delays push the problem farther and farther out of mind. Keys has done some astral surveillance (and so has Sleight), and Chromium at least a bit of grounds surveillance. That leaves a Matrix sweep, and then we go in. Do we want to run with the smash-and-grab during a cigarette break? It's efficient, uncomplicated, and would get us moving again.

I think we need Big D to let Keys and Sleight (and anybody else doing leg work) the final pieces of information. Then we need Keys to tell us if he can Banish the Earth Elemental in the back yard. Sleight can help, but Sleight doesn't as big a dice pool as Keys...but some. Once we decide how we want to go at them...cause I think the 3 regular guys are in excess to the mage whom has not poked his head out yet. Any other suggestions?
