Rachel, you are free to begin your turn BUT I want to bounce a house rule off you guys while you are strategizing.

'Getting a jump on the case' is done by visiting the crime scene. This allows the player who visits the crime scene and spends one time to become the first player.

The problem is that going first is usually not a good thing in Android as this means the other players can dump just enough negative baggage on you to push you into a bad plot resolution.

Therefore, I propose that when a detective 'gets a jump on the case' they can nominate any detective to be the first player, thereby allowing themselves to be second or third if desired. Minor change, but makes this much more useful, allows the first player to escape this position if they want to and means the crime scene might actually get visited! What do you think?

I am good with this change.

I am ready to start my turn. I will move over to the game forum to post my actions as soon as I receive confirmation that Caprice is not going to hit me with a dark card at the beginning of my turn.

OK, then we're off!

Should I step-by-step my way through my turn, giving everyone Caprice (for now) time to play her dark card between each action? Or should I just post all of my actions up to the point that I need moderator input and count on contingency orders for other players' dark card triggers?

Re: General Chat
Post up to the point where you need moderator input.

Hmm... This was something else I have been thinking about but never got around to discussing. I need conditional orders for players holding dark cards of the currently active player, telling me when their cards will be played/triggered.

Sorry, should have done that a couple of days ago, but just forgot.

Caprice (Chris) please write in your private thread if you want any conditional triggers for the Rachel dark card you hold.

Re: General Chat
Would it be helpful on our Private character threads to edit our main status post to include a Conditional Orders section where we can put those in and update that section as the game continues? Or would that just complicate matters for moderation?

Good idea, I'll incorporate that as it becomes appropriate.

Good first turn Carl. Are you sherperding the leads in your area? ;) I will update the gameboard map tonight.

I love the extra in character flavour - I didn't expect that and it's a great bonus. :D

Floyd/Mike, you are free to start your turn.

Thank you. I honestly just decided to focus on prep work this first day. I will have to start chasing leads eventually, though...

Thank you. To be honest, most of the flavor text was taken directly from the Twilight Cards that I played. But that little bit of flavor really makes this game come to life.

Well, you don't need to wait as long as you have the game board in front of you and you can work it out yourself.

Yes, your three NPCs are the people shown on your character sheet, and Floyd has Father Michael, Simmons and Director Hass. The only way to figure that out what they do is to read through all of your light cards, as this is how you will get benefits from your NPCs. Some of your light cards say 'play while Father Michael is alive' or 'play at the start of your turn while Simmons is alive'. This is how you interact with your NPCs.

Director Haas is a little bit different. She isn't so much a trigger on the cards, she is a result - i.e. you can only get Director Haas favours if she is still alive.

FYI, I think some of the dark cards can also only be triggered if some of your NPC's are alive.

And the way that NPC's get killed? This is via plot resolutions. If you are forced into a sad story ending NPC's sometimes end up dead.

Re: General Chat
Just a thought on something John mentioned on the main thread:

"And that's what this game is about really, isn't it? I mean, if somebody who didn't know the game asked you to describe the main mechanic it would have to be:

Land on a lead and investigate it. Then the player on your right gets to move the lead.

That is what we have spent most of our time doing. It is not an impressive central mechanic."

I think it's definitely a traditional Euro mechanic, and I suspect that's what turned a lot of people off the game - it's got all the flashy Ameritrash/FFG chrome to set up a certain expectation of gameplay, but underneath that it's a relatively traditional Euro engine, with player denial, point salads, and even a bit of worker placement. Android is a weird, weird hybrid.

Re: General Chat
That's all very true. I think that one of the things that really killed Android with a lot of the BGG crowd is that it was too unique and defied too many expectations. That's probably why most of the "positive" reviews for it talk about it more as an ambitious failure, a better work of art than a game, or something along those lines.

You are correct about it being an odd hybrid. Where most hybrids focus on combining the mechanisms of Euros and ATs (usually the popular Euro mechanism of the day with direct conflict and/or dice), Kevin Wilson decided to combine the in depth story-telling of the best AT games with Euro mechanisms. I think that the crowd that would have liked it the most was possibly turned off of it because it was designed by Kevin Wilson, who is best know for massive dice fest type AT. It also does a great job of demonstrating that it is possible to heavily integrate theme into a Euro game and that dice and luck aren't needed to provide the drama of a good story.

Re: General Chat
Chris, I've played a fair amount of Euro's in my time and the lead moving mechanic doesn't remind me of any of them.

Storytelling is all well and good, but this is a game and it should be possible to make a strategy. Does anyone feel that they have a strong strategy they are pursuing? Or are you just chasing after leads and weathering random attacks from dark cards?

Re: General Chat
I guess in my head I just equate the lead moving with denying other players access to a space (even if it is a bit wonky mechanically), so it feels very much like a Euro mechanic to me.

For my part, I'm definitely pursuing a strategy (not that I'm going to share it :) ). The tricky thing is that because the leads move around wildly a lot of times you have to make "opportunity" moves based on location, movement range, and score.

I definitely think you're on to something though, in that the fun in the game doesn't really come from any of the mechanics per se (and frankly, I think Android is a bit overstuffed in that department) as much as it does from predicting and responding to the other players' own attempts to come out ahead, and trying to slow them down while building yourself up - and of course the narrative that plays out while doing so.

Ugh! I will be without Internet for a few days while I change ISP, and I can't update the game board from my phone so we will be on hold until I get this sorted. Sorry about the delay.

Just an FYI - remember that since we're in the last two days of the case now we no longer move leads that are followed up on, they're out of the game.
