I don't know. I spent a lot of time once he got the second hit trying to find ways to remove them. Maybe the intent is just not to make it so obvious which suspects you are pursuing?

It is impossible to hide that, as you need to heap the evidence on if you want to make sure they are found guilty. And there are plenty of ways to reveal pieces as well. So no, I think it is just another part of the game that is not well thought out.
