With her ally pinned and the field hectic Dove sheathed her mace and chanted a spell. Basic and unerring a trio of magic missiles shot out to strike the bear in the face and hopefully both wound and distract the beast.

Dreamljocht takes some steps away from the raging bear, touches his holy symbol and casts Prayer on himself and his companions, probably missing Sam because he is out of reacht.

You and each of your allies gain a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, while each of your foes takes a -1 penalty on such rolls.

Dove gave it a moment and with a little shrug she cheerfully just shot another round of Magic missiles with a cry of joy at the release of her destructive magic. Simple, but effective. She had a special spot for Magic Missiles after all.

Dove hits with 3 magic missiles for 12 force damage.

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

As Jem backs away upon Muffins, the bear tears into the back of the cavalier. Wincing in pain, bloody and cut up-they get some distance off and Jem charges at it! The lance sinks deep into it and it roars in pain! The sudden pain hits it hard and it falls to the ground, lifeless. Coming out of the wilderness, a tiny form charges at Muffins! It bites but misses and stands before the bear, nudging it. Sam steps back, holding his wounded side. The sudden realization hits.

They killed its parent.

Haile jumps off her mount and goes to the bear and motions for Dream to heal it, realizing it has a pulse.

*Jem take 11 damage

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

Jemimwitt withdrew with some speed from the cub and dying mother, pulling back on a snarling Muffins to keep his mount away from the cub. It was still probably large enough to do serious damage to a non-combatant, but he judged that the cub was hardly a threat to them.

Jemimwitt was a little confused at the idea of healing the dire bear: it was a dire bear. It was still going to be a big dangerous oversized bear if it healed, and so would the cub if it grew into adulthood.

No doubt, there was some hidden ranger wisdom at play. He'd respect the wishes of those in his party. He trusted his new allies more than enough to give them the benefit of the doubt in such matters. Plus, it was impossible to feel at least a bit of sympathy for the poor creature.

So, he took stock - he was banged up, but he wasn't about to bleed to death himself. He remained well back from the melee, looking for any other potential foes, and trying to ignore the pain of his many claw and bite slashes.

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

Deciding to save her spells for now Dove drew her crossbow and loaded it, obviously preparing to fire soon after at the bear and/or cub. She didn't seem to agree with Halie's decision to heal and spare the frankly huge bear in the slightest.

"I'm one of the first people to support the rights of animals to their lives, especially those defending their cubs. But seriously look at that thing, It looks diseased. I have no idea what they've been into, but I don't think letting it go is the right call."

"Drop it or I will drop you." The tiefling has a arrow aimed at Dove, eyes narrow. He doesn't know much of healing but when someone loads a weapon that seem intent on causing harm-bad idea "Can you heal it enough to not wake it up?"

The cub growls at everyone, leaning against its parent. With Dream, Jem, Haile and Sam surrounding it, its panicky. Its parent doesn't move.

Jemimwitt had backed up significantly away from the mess. He did not want to further crowd the cub.

He grew alarmed though, when Sam made his ultimatum.

"For goodness sake, Sam, please tone it down.

This woman just fought on our side. Also, I'm not sure if you've noticed but she's a spellcaster. She hardly would be using a crossbow to attack us if she meant to do us harm."

He tried to speak in as friendly a tone as he could manage.

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

Dreamljocht listens to the discussion among his companions. He adds: "I don't think it is wise to heal the bear. She would be a mortal danger to all of us, seeing how she wounded us. And she will be too strong to tie her. The only positive chance I see, is Halie adopting the cub as a companion. I don't know if you can or will, Halie, but there are rangers with an animal companion. If that's not possible I suggest to leave the cub here alive and let nature runs its course: it could live, it could die and so be it."

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

Dove seemed to give Sam a long look before she released a breath of air, aiming the crossbow down as she calmly and cooly removed the bolt and reholstered the crossbow. She was silent though her lips moved as she counted softly to give trying to unwind before she finally let out a burst of air. Dove had a bit of a temper perhaps, or perhaps having her life threatened multiple times by Sam was across her line.

“Right. New rule. If you threaten my life, I’m setting you on fire. Put the bow down or burn Sammy.”

Doves fingers twitched as she tried very hard not to follow up on her threat, but if Sam wanted to shoot her or didn’t put his bow down she was going to lash out.

OOC: Readied action, if Sam shoots her she’s setting him on fire and we will see if evasion saves him.

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

Jemimwitt gave a long sigh, and maneuvered between the two, keeping his distance from both and facing neither, so it was clear he was not about to charge. Of course, Sam was probably a good enough shot that he could hit her anyway, but that wasn't really the point.

"Fine, but we should come to that conclusion through our words, not threatening to shoot people with a blasted crossbow or spells.

This bear just tried to kill us: I'd probably be bleeding out at the moment if it wasn't for that heal earlier.

So, why don't we have a nice friendly conversation with words instead of threatening to murder people over the life of a bloody bear that just tried to kill us?

You know... TONE IT DOWN A LITTLE."

Sam might not like being told what to do, but Jemimwitt Haethy would be damned if he'd be told what he couldn't say.

Dove just flashed a strained but polite smile at Jemimwitt though did nothing to shift out of her stance.

“You can act like you’re talking to both of us rather then Sam all you want but my threat sums up to stop threatening to murder me and pointing weapons at me or I’ll defend myself. Not about what we do with the beast. In most circles that’s normal, yes?”

The tiefling shoulders his bow, staring at the group and shakes his head "My views apparently mean little so I won't say a damn word. Go flock to your best friend." He walks away without a word, anger brewing up inside of him. He darts into the woodlands and is gone.

Haile seems torn but the bear lies there with its cub. She stands up, watching what is going on and knowing Sam can be reckless. But does she even know Dove? No "Is this the time to talk? Sam did what he believed was right. But you threatening to kill him wasn't right either. So stop." She doesn't stand a chance of moving it as she tries but nods to Dream "Can we at least bury it?" She seems crestfallen.

Re: (IC) The Quest Begins!

(OOC- I literally started writing that post before Dove posted her response).

Were these people mad?

"Sam, you are welcome to talk and communicate with your words and views. It's the 'Do what I say or I'll shoot you with a crossbow' is generally frowned upon" He turns to Haile.

"Halie, she just said it wasn't a good idea to heal the bear. She wasn't commanding anyone. Healing the bear is up to you and Dreamljocht. I'm certainly not going to tell him how to use his divine power. As to our new friend threatening to kill Sam: he literally threatened to drop her if she didn't drop her weapon. We were fighting this thing for our lives 30 seconds ago."

The danger seemingly averted, Jemimwitt gave Muffins a pet and shook his head. Sometimes, he just didn't understand people.
