5E gameplay, with a change to spell acquisition.
You buy your spell focus, which gives you access to one cantrip that will be chosen semi-random by me. A table will exist for the options so crappy cantrips cannot be granted this way. No truestrikes, for example.
Characters get access to cantrips per magical study classes that they take. They have to make Arcana skill challenges to cast the class-spells. If you get the successes without any failures at all, you master it.
Spells that are learned but not mastered still require an Arcana check to cast them properly. Those that are mastered are added to the spell book. Those that do not get mastered are not added to the known spells. Spells that you fail require 1 week +1 week per spell level to repeat the skill challenge to learn them.
Level 1 spells require 5 successes before 7 failures.
