Cyrus nodded at the man’s modesty and said, “You’ll earn that title soon enough and I will be proud to have been the first to call you it. How goes things in Tusk? The roads were clear between here and there, weren’t they?”

Cyrus had worked hard to rid this land of bandits and poachers and he didn’t plan on letting things slip just because he’d gotten married, built a home and had a kid.

“I’ve heard that if we laid a road of bricks, the wagons and horses might travel from town to town more easily. It seems like a lot of work, but I have been considering it. It would improve your business here, wouldn’t it?”

Dom grinned "If you made it out of stone it certainly would improve business, I have been researching the old Taldan Highways and I think I could build them with the right road crew.  They were an amazing feat of engineering.  But I won't bore you with the details unless you want to talk about sand to gravel ratios..."  a halfling arrived at that point with a mug of ale saving everyone from Dom's very thorough recitation of Taldan roadworks as he took a long drink.  "Aaah that hit the spot, now you asked about the roads there haven't been many instances of banditry not since your man Stilchio and his crew hunted down a band about 6 months ago.

Now the biggest problem would be getting the stone of course, no local quarries so I'm having to bring it down from Restov for any major works, one of the reasons the lands around Lake Silverstep for my marcher lordship."

"Upgrading the roads between towns would be very expensive ... " Gandred comments in surprise at the ambition of the two young men he is sitting with.  But perhaps that is why they are a Lord and a successful businessman, while he is just a Smith.

"But couldn't some things of that sort be completed with local field stone?" he asks, truly interested.  "The farmers and small holders are always complaining that they have to move rocks when they  want to start a vegetable patch?"

"Field stone can be used for smaller buildings, houses and fencing but for something solid like castle walls or even a fortified villa you want to be able to cut the stone.  A good quarry would let us do that.  Now what I'm really hoping for is a good source of marble can be found.  Then we will make Kunlun a place for pilgrims throughout the north to visit.  Temples to Erastil, Abadar, Torag, A pavilion dedicated to Shelyn, a great hall devoted to all the gods where people are free to worship.    he pauses "Sorry getting ahead of myself.  Still if uour not thinking about something it will never happen." Dom said with a sheepish grin.

"First we need to get exploring around the area, find out what is there and drive away any monsters.  I'm in talks with the Silverhammers about them settling in the area once we have more information.  Gandred it would mean an increase in your flock too, you may want to think about expanding the shrine.  I happen to know a few dwarves who would be up for the job, at a reduced rate too."

Cyrus smiled at the practicality of his dwarven adviser and said, “Local field stone would be a great source to start our roads here. We should probably start in the center and lay the stones on the most commonly used paths and roads first and then go from there. And if we run out of the field stones, we could find some suitable rocks in the river bed, no?

At the discussion of a grander place, Cyrus turned back to Dom and said, “Dream your dream, sir. I am sure Gandred and I will support you in such an endeavor, though I wonder how many converts will make their way here from your Kunlun.”

Realizing that could be taken rudely he added, “I would be happy to help you in scouting the land. That’s what we did here. I wonder if we could convince Percy and Vik to come along as well. Andalon would be a joy to have as well and if anyone would want to support such an endeavor, I’d imagine it he would.” Cyrus smiled at the fond memories he had of clearing the land with his friends and the thought of them all gathering together for another grand  adventure.

"Aah my Lord Kunlun isn't my project though I anticipate a lot of the stonework will come my way.  Lord Henry is behind the project with the backing of the religious council.  They seek a central place of worship where all may come to pray.  I'll be proud to see the work of my masons there.  We are organising a new workgang to head out shortly to do more work.

Clan Silverhammer, my lord are old friends of my family I am sponsoring their relocation to Midmarch and they will be an important ally in my own expansion to the south.  The Tors of the Levenies will be good ground I'm thinking for expansion for them."
he stops to drink take another drink before continuing.

Now for the exploration it would of course be a pleasure to have you join me, the more the merrier as they say.  I'm not entirely sure who would be available to join us though, Lord Henry does have people venturing forth all over the place.

Cyrus smiled and nodded at the comment about Henry having groups out exploring all over. The man really had a knack of finding people willing to work for him, and why not, he rewarded their efforts and then some.

“I have little doubt Henry has a plan. Perhaps it is time I paid the Lord a visit. He has been so generous to Valoria and I and really to the people of Ringbridge, a visit truly is long overdue. Gandred, will you come along as well? Perhaps we can acquire the materials you need for the forge?”

Then he turns to Domitus, "How has Hargrym been getting on?  I have hardly seen him since he went over to Ironkeep to set up that Jeweller's shop for you.  Mind you, Your masons are ticking along nicely.  Do you intend to bring Hargrym back here, or will he be staying in Ironkeep?"

I should also mention Lord Kendrick and I will be consolidating our assets here in Ringbridge Winter Sun Merchants will be acquiring his shop and setting up regular trade rubs between here and Tusk as well as Whiterun we are hoping.  I'm hoping these things will increase trade here in Ringbridge."

The lord once again smiled in dismay at the generosity of the people who had come to call Ringbridge home, even if only temporary. “Well I am quite sure Valoria would enjoy such a useful enchantment, as would I, for that matter.”

As the conversation became more focused on the merchant’s plans Cyrus found himself discouraged to lose such a prominent member of this growing village while at the same time reassured that his departure was not a loss of all the productivity and expansion he’d been bringing. “Regular trade routes would be welcome as well. Perhaps as we journey south, we may find something to aid in that endeavor. Have you visited Mound recently? I aim to establish a few farms near in the area near the Watchtower. That may require some initial labor but could add another leg to future trade routes.”

He paused before concluding his current train of thought with a toast, “To Dominick’s continued success! May he and his men connect the people of Ringbridge with the rest of our growing land!” And held his mug of ale high in tribute to Dominick.

Cyrus took a moment to answer the question about his plans and was also happy the dwarf took that opportunity to order another round of ales.

“Gandered is a good man, a good friend. He has been there for me over the past few years more than anyone, except Valoria, of course. And he is becoming a master smith.”

When the next round arrived, Cyrus answered the previous question, “There are a number of civic issues that need to be addressed structurally. Once those are completed, I have some ideas, but I aim to be flexible, building the city the people of Ringbridge need to prosper.”

As for Hargrym he will be looking to expand clan Silverhammer's resources within the region.  I'm hoping we find iron in the mountains or something better a nice Mithral vein would certainly be a boon"

Cyrus admired the man’s armor and said, “That would be a boon to our budding nation, indeed. Mithral shirts would be well received by our scouts here in Ringbridge and would be fine barring for elite cavalry. I’d be interested in such protection for Roughheart as well.”

He continued, “A marketplace would be a welcome addition here, as would expanded training facilities for our troops. I have orders to protect the bridge here and to be aware of all who pass along or beside the river here, so that has been the objective of our training to date. Attracting a new master for the sword school might be a challenge but as Ringbridge grows in both  size and prominence, perhaps we will find ourselves with a master fitting our needs.”

Cyrus admired his colleague’s ambition and confidence. He thought of how he’d previously aspired to be a swordlord himself but had chosen a path he felt more drawn to by the opportunities that presented themselves. “I could teach men to fight with a blade and shield or how to ride into battle on horseback, but I don’t think I’ll ever be a swordlord myself. But you are a dueler?”

“I love a good spar, but only with training blades. The last time I sparred with a friend, I nearly bled poor Viktoria. I always question whether she truly ever forgave me for that blow. It was an accident but to this day, I would swear I knew my blade would strike true before I ever drew it.”

“I miss that feeling, the surge of energy, the quiet thrill of a clean strike. Sparring and training really can only prepare you for so much, and never truly satisfy those other urges.”

Still I would be happy to give you a test in the Sallet should you wish, I do have an appointment with Lord Mordane but with blunted blades.  Though I suspect my wife wouldn't approve if I was using live blades, at least until the babe is born."
he winked.  "I'm not really sure I'm ready to become a father, still another of life's adventures as you know better than I."

Cyrus smiled as Domitius talked about his dueling experience and said in response, “I fear dueling me would be a rather easy task for the fleet of foot as the rules seem to favor speed over strength. And while I am agile, I have seen some amongst the dueler who are far faster than me.”

At the mention of the upcoming baby, Cyrus grinned knowingly, “A babe will change many things for you and though you are wise to avoid the wrath of your bride, you may want to let some time pass beyond the first year of your child’s life before dueling. Sleep is far harder to come by and even at your best, you won’t be what you are today. Take care of your bride and your babe. And do me a favor, send word when the babe comes. The lady and I will come to give our blessings and see the baby. I will tell her I saw you and you had such good tidings.”

“And my man, have no doubts, you will be a great father. You take care of your wife and your child before all others. They are your first and only treasure and you will have a happy future.”

Cyrus smiled at the realizations his drinking companion was making in real time and said, “Ah, well you are in for a treat my friend. My only advice is that if you don’t know what the plan is for anything, you should ask Alisa and listen to what she says. Really listen though, there are things that she won’t even know she is saying that will be important and she may not even know what she needs or wants but the talking may help you and her find that out. And wet nurse or not, I’d be sure to make sure she has one or two trusted attendants on hand, you will both be very tired for the first few months and the more help you have the more rest you will each get and the more you will be able to enjoy the beautiful life you are watching grow before you.

He paused and then added, “Oh and get a dog, one from a line of herders is preferred. You won’t regret it. Trust me.”

Gandred looks up in surprise. "You train dogs to herd children?" he asks in  an interested voice.

He'd been happy to let the two of them speak together.  His own thought had tended towards tempering cold iron and ales - and perhaps using ale to do the tempering ...  But child-dogs was a revelation!  Sheepdogs, deerhounds even elk hounds.  But child-hounds was a new onr on him ...

Cyrus let out a loud laugh at the question from the dwarf.

“No, my friend, I haven’t trained a dog to herd my child, but if you bring them inside, the sheep dogs try to herd people the same as sheep. And if the dog bonds with the child early, there will be no better guard, save you or I. You’ve heard not to mess with bear cubs, knowing the mother will take your head off your shoulders. The same is true with the dog.”

He paused, “And if you can make a saddle small enough, you can get a head start on teaching your child to ride horseback.” He kept a straight face as long as he could, before letting out another roaring laugh at the thought of his own boy riding the back of their dog.
