Fuzzy: The Swans (Ringbridge)

Properly known as The Symphony of Swans this roadhouse has a highly decorated and carved door surround - featuring swans, roses, fairy's thimbles, harebells and bluebells.

There is a single large common room served by a bar and small kitchen.  Servers will bring drinks and simple meals to the table for you.  Unusually, all the staff are halflings -  although everything in the place is sized for humans.

Fuzzy: The Swans (Ringbridge)

Surely he’s not already here. I am early, right. the young dwarf reassured himself as he entered the Swans. Despite the “settling” that had preoccupied Cyrus’s time over these past few years, the Lord was punctual and Gandred appreciated his master’s commitment to valuing the time and efforts of those who had chosen to join him at Ringbridge.

Gandred scanned the relatively empty common room and exhaled deeply. He didn’t even realize he’d been holding his breath, but the priest had made it a point to arrive early for these informal council meetings so he could get a lay of the land.

Gandred spotted a nice long table that would accommodate the regulars along with any surprise guests for tonight’s discussion and after ordering a flagon of the local ale, the fiery dwarf took a seat in the middle of the table claiming it for the evening and waited for his beer and his friend to arrive.

OOC: by all means any and all are welcome to join in the discussion(s) here.

Fuzzy: The Swans (Ringbridge)

It had taken Cyrus longer than he’d expected to leave his villa. Leo was quite the waddler these days and the boy almost managed to make his way into one of the hidden tunnels in the hilly manor for the third time this week.

Valoria had threatened to have Gandred close off the tunnels permanently but Cyrus objected strongly and his public rationale was championed by his sister-in-law because of their value as a strategic choke point or exit should they ever need one.

As he walked along the road to the Swans he spoke in a soft tone to no one in particular, “Those tunnels almost claimed my life twice in a single day, my sons and daughters will learn from their father’s folly, not repeat his mistakes.”

Cyrus must have been more excited to see his friend and adviser than he’s realized because he’d covered the short journey to the Swans in record time. Before opening the door, he took a deep breath and then threw open the doors with a jovial greeting, ”Well met fellow patrons, the next round is on me, so drink only the best the Swans has to offer on this fine evening.”

He saw Gandred, sitting alone ale in hand at the center of a long table and joined his friend, standing behind the seat directly across from the dwarf and said, ”How are you my friend? The lady sends her regards for not joining tonight, she’s fretting over Leo’s restless legs among other things.”

The young noble pulled the simple chair back away from the table and sat down, and added, “And when will I see the hammer, I requested. Take the time you need my good man, but I do hope it is ready for me soon. I’d like a few sparring sessions with it as soon as I can get them.”

He smiled broadly at his adviser as he awaited the dwarf’s response.

Gandred scratches at his beard, "Weeelll, its like this.  I am having trouble getting the cold iron right.  I have had to start three times now.  I suppose I had better get some better tools before I try again ..."

Then the dwarf takes a large swig of his ale, perhaps to try and hide his embarrassment.

Cyrus smiled at the dwarf as he bemoaned his current working conditions and their limitations. He thought of the way his father would complain to his mother about their court schemes and the smile temporarily left his face.

“Ah, Gandred, my friend, I wish you had told me sooner. Of course we can get whatever resources you need. Prepare a list of the materials you need and let me know if you have need of any workers to help improve upon your workshop while we are at it. I do hope my ignorance of your forge work hasn’t lead to any waste.”

He paused and then added, “I have seen Cold Iron, but never known how it is made. Would you mind explaining exactly how you work the iron to make it so?”

Gandred pauses as Cyrus asks about cold iron, trade secrets are trade secrets - but Cyrus is both his employer and his friend ...

"Well, it comes from a special ore, only found deep underground, which needs specialized equipment to smelt  and purify it.  Then it has to be worked very precisely.  That I think, is part of the problem.  The hammers I have are either too  coarse for the job, or if they are small enough don't have the weight.  And there is 'bounce' in the anvil.  Hardly noticeable, of course, and OK for normal items, but it makes fine work difficult.

It isn't an issue for the weapons and armour I work on for your garrisons, but for the finer work ..."
Gandred lets that tail away, hoping ity is enough to satisfy Cyrus.

"But tell me, how is the Lady Valoria?  And young Leo?  I haven't seen them for a while."

Cyrus listened intently to his friend’s explanation and nodded his head in the affirmative trying to assure the dwarf that Cyrus would do everything in his power to get the smith all that he needed.

At the mention of his family, Cyrus’ smile grew wider and he readily allowed the subject to be changed, “Valoria is thriving. What a woman, smarter than anyone I have ever met. Braver too. She babies Leo a bit more than I care to see but he is his father’s son so maybe he needs it.”

He looked around to make sure there were no eavesdroppers and then continued speaking quietly, just above a whisper so that only the dwarf could hear the beginning of his tale, but his voice grew louder as he continued so that any passerby could hear him say, “... the boy could have easily waddled to his grave, I nearly died twice down there, admittedly once was because of that damned cat and it’s filthy owner, but still. The kid is fast, smart and stronger than you’d think for such a wee little thing.”

He paused and then said, “If Henry had told me I’d be a father so soon after joining his ranks, I’d have told the Lord where he could put that charter, but such is life, always the unexpected. I guess it’s up to you to find the joy or let the pain tear you apart.”

“Gandred, I haven’t told her yet, but I am thinking about asking Henry to send me back out in the field. Between Valoria and her sister and all the people who are now here tending to the land and our defense, my skills would be better used elsewhere...” He trailed off, ready to be scolded for even considering the appearances of abandoning his family and lands, but hoping the dwarf would see his own view of things.

The ride from Tusk had been slow going, escorting one of Winter Sun Merchants was a job that Domitius did occasionally usually if there was something special on board.  This time it had been rare Kyonin silks for Quinn, the package dropped off it was time for a drink.  Leaving his mount at the serai Dom headed to the Swans for a drink and a hot meal.

He entered and paused to allow his eyes to adjust to the light before heading further in.  Seeing Lord Cyrus and a dwarf he didn't know sitting at the long table he approached.  "My Lord, mind if I join you, forgive my appearence but I have just now arrived from Tusk and could do with a good mug of ale."

Domitius nodded and smiled as he took a seat next to Cyrus "Pleas my lord, Domitius is sufficient I have yet to earn the title of lord on my own merit." He sat so to allow himself freedom of movement "Master Quinn had a delivery of silks from Kyonin, so I thought I should join the caravan here.  A little bit of extra security for a good customer.

I'm glad I ran into you my lord there are somethings I wish to discuss about the lands to the south and west of here."
