Table 1:  Kendrick Vs Cass.

Cyrus positioned himself in the center of the arena, waiting for Cass and Kendrick to join him for their duel.

OOC: please share your current AC and HP in a private line to me in each message. It also helps for me to know your AC breakdown especially if you have any fun feats or other nuances. Thank you!

Kendrick took several minutes to remove his armor. The gauntlets, bracers and several other pieces were stacked at a nearby table. Kendrick looked at Cass for a second before he also removed his necklace. He picked up the buckler and the dueling sword. He took up a position in one of the far corner of the dueling square.

Position at A4

Once Cass was appropriately prepared according to the rules, he selected a sword from the rack with the proper balance, Then he simply walked to position B4.

"I hope that you don't mind me beginning here, Marshall. I see no point in dancing across the floor in some elaborate pattern when it is our wrists that will be the deciding factors."

Cyrus gazed at each of the combatants and then raised his hand high in the sky. “Ready” He yelled

And then as he dropped his fist to the dirt taking a knee he yelled “Begin”

OOC: Please roll for initiative and provide me your first round actions via PM. I will let you know the outcome of the first round and then you can take it in initiative order from there. I will resolve it all much the same as we did in the other thread.

Cass was on Kendrick in a flash, lashing out with his blade and striking true.

OOC: Cass won initiative. Kendrick, please post next with your description of your turn per my PM. Cass, please hold your next action until Kendrick posts. Then you may post your next attack and just leave them in a PM to me here. 

Kendrick was in mid-weapon salute when Cass attacked in a quick fashion. He moved to the side and completed the weapon salute. "Cass, I thought you'd appreciate a send of style or decorum in this duel. It is after all, a show of swordsmanship. No?" The wooden saber had a touch of hue after the salute. Kendrick took a strong stance and was prepared for the attack that was sure to come.

“My apologies, Marshal.”Cass said, raising his own weapon in a salute almost too fast to be fully seen. “But the beginning had been called and I had been trained to act swiftly, disregarding perfunctories. There is something of a lethal edge to the art. For example, my first move is known as
Kitten Strikes Swiftly.

Cass shuffled his feet for a second before tilting his head quizzically. Rather than force a strike, the marshal was busy imbuing his sword with magic.
Cass leaped forward, bringing his blade into play once again.

“That move is known as Lightning Strikes Twice.” Cass smiled. “I notice that you have called upon magic to guide your aim? If you wish this to be a test of raw swordsmanship and skill, I will give you the opportunity to dispel. Or do you wish to test my arcane abilities as well?”

"Well that depends... I wasn't aware that it was limited to only swordsmanship. I must apologize for my mistake." Kendrick turned on his heels and marched to the weapons table. He set down the dueling sword before picking up another wooden sword. He tested the weight as he marched back into the square. "Continue."

“No mistake. Simply a small concession and for that, I thank you.”

Cass set himself in a defensive stance, readying himself for aKendrick’s strike.

"If you're ready." Kendrick shifted his feet and brought the sword down in a power strike. It was a simple over the shoulder strike, one that was trained into a soldier for hours upon hours.

Cyrus watched as Kendrick switched out weapons and Cass respected his dueling partner’s choice. Then Kendrick closed and dealt a swift, violent blow to Cass.

Cass was rocked back solidly by Kendrick’s powerful attack. Not taking time to assess the damage, Cass immediately countered with an attack of his own.

Cyrus watched as Cass took the heavy blow from Kendrick but was impressed that he returned with a deft strike of his own.

Cass takes a moment to note the blood pouring from his body. There seems to be more of it than he expected.

Kendrick ignored the minor flesh wounds. He twirled the blade before he lashed out with the wooden blade. "This reminds me of the time where the master-at-arms suggested that I train with a heavy weighted sword. Good training."

“You certainly have mastered the art,” Cass agreed. “Luckily for me this is only a duel and not actual combat. I have seen you in the field and you always manage to devastate your enemies.” Cass tried for a crossover strike and while the move was successful, it landed with little force.

The two combatants trade blows, testing each other’s defenses and leaving minor bruises.

Cass was feeling a bit light headed as he prepared for the Marshal’s next attack. He had serious doubts that his speed would be a match for Kendrick’s power. Still, the match was not over yet.

Kendrick tried to follow up with a quick strike of his own. "But your quickness is an asset. Not all fights are as straight forward as a duel."

Cyrus watched the two combatants closely, Kendrick took another swing that snuck through Cass’s defenses.

Another strike, more blood. It was now apparent to Cass that one way or another, this duel was about to be over quickly.

Cade’s blade strikes true and leaves a small bruise.

Kendrick stepped back to slash down with the dueling sword.

Kendrick connects with a swing that nearly takes Cass to his knees, but Cass remains on his feet, at least for the moment.

Feeling himself buckle, Cass leaned in for one more quick strike although it did not have the power behind it that he had hoped. “After this bout, you may certainly call yourself a duelist as well as a warrior.” Cass congratulated Kendrick.

Cass once again struck true, but the blow was minor.

OOC:  How are we doing guys?  You each have three mire duels to fight yet.

OOC: Dom is happy to fight to first touch if you want :)

Kendrick continued his methodical strikes with the wooden sword.

Kendrick swings and drops Cass to the ground unconscious. Cyrus congratulats Kendrick and checks on Cass to make sure the damage he’d taken wasn’t too severe.

Kendrick lowered his sword. He stepped closer. "How is he? Not too hurt, I hope."

After time for each contestant to fully heal and prepare themselves, the next bout is announced ...

Table 1 - Cass Vs Adoven  (Umpire Kendrick 1)

Adoven readies himself with rapier and dagger. He says "Good Luck, but not too good." If he is the faster fighter, he will take advantage of whatever gaps appear in Cass' defenses.
Adoven starts in B-3. His actions are based on who is faster.

“Relying mostly on luck got me trounced last session.” Cass remarked, turning to give Kendrick a wink. “Nice victory, Marshall. Clean and harmful, just the way it should be.” Looking back to Adoven, Cass saluted with his sword. “Since I know that you won’t agree to duel without magic as the Marshall agreed, I am sure this will be a truer test of combat prowess than swordsmanship. As such, I wish you a fair showing. But only fair.” Cass smiled genuinely to Adoven. He then quickly took his place (C3) and began spell casting.

The two combatants entered the dueling room. Adovan attacked with rapier and dagger. Both attacks in rapid succession. Cass was already on alert, so he wasn't caught flat-footed. Cass casted a spell while on the defensive.





OOC: Next round! Adovan won INIT. But both may post in a private line.

“Two strikes deserve two strikes.” Cass commented before he attacked with both sword and spell.

DM Ruling

The rules say that a Character is flat-footed in the first round of combat, if they lose initiative.  However, this is a controlled duelling environment, not a standard fight.

The Duel starts when the duellers enter the table.  Adoven has entered the duelling table  and walked to the centre of the table to take his stance - right next to Cass.  So there is an implied movement of 5 feet in Adoven's post.  That, in my view, is enough to negate the flatfoot rule.

After this tournament is over, I will modify the house duelling rules to fix starting points for contestants - so this doesn't come up again.

On a second point -  no character knows whether they have won or lost initiative, until they hit or are hit.  There can't be an either/or set of action - players must post a single set of actions, regardless of whether they win or lose initiative.

Adoven takes a 5' step away from Cass. He mentally activates his Shield spell, casting Defensively.

And this is exactly why I didn't really want to run  duels and why I dislike the way the d20 and then PF has added all these fine detail rules for a game that has always been based around general concepts - that encouraged Role Play rather than rules management.  I find it amusing (to some extent) that D&D grew out of a wargame (Chainmail) to  scratch the developers itch to role play their main characters, and  now, the combat rules are moving back towards fine detailed skirmish level wargaming.

Supplements for the sake of supplements  to earn them more money with little consideration of how they affect the game.  It is interesting to note the power creep that takes place with each supplement - amazing how many people now think the original prestige classes are 'weak'. I guess they were just throwing 'cool stuff' at the rules.

Cass moves the distance needed to strike Adoven again and again brings his sword to bear this time sending magical lightning along with it.

OOC Is this Lightning energy something that Evasion works against?

It is a touch attack.

OOC Ah. Adoven's Touch AC is currently 19.

OOC : But the sword already touched him. How does that work? I thought the spell triggered on any successful strike attack, so long as spellcraft didn’t fumble. Do I need to roll a second attack roll instead?

The effect is delivered through the sword.  If the sword-blow hits the magical effect takes effect.  If the sword misses, the lightning doesn't hit.

In reply to Kendrick Winters (msg # 42):

Adovan casted a spell on himself. The shield negated the magic missiles that struck the invisible barrier, but it did not stop the Aldori Sword that slid effortlessly into Adovan's flesh.

Adoven breathes a sigh of relief as he presses his attack. He hadn't known that Cass knew that spell, and his Shield saved him from that lack of knowledge. "Pretty tricky, Cass" he says as both rapier and dagger dig at Cass Mordane's defenses.

“One needs every trick in the book to keep up with you,” Cass smiled before it was quickly drawn away in a sear of pain at Adoven’s next attack.

Round 3 results
Adovan probed Cass' defense with both rapier and dagger. The rapier pierced through biting flesh. But the real threat was the dagger that pierced the side. Adovan stepped back twisting the dagger.

Cass blinked back tears and attacked with a fury. But the rapier wasn't able to pierce through the defense and the shield spell that negated the magic missiles.

Cass again chooses to use the combination of sword and spell as he conducts the form called No Calming the Storm

Adoven says "That was no Bard spell! When did you start training as a Magus?" His quick eyes took in Cass' movements and tried to guess what was coming even as he continued to press his attack.

Electricity crackles briefly on Cass's blade, but Adoven farts in and strikes with both dagger and rapier, the pain from the blows causing the spell to stutter and fail  However Cass  recovers enough to bring his duelling sword round a blow against Adoven's side.

OOC  Gentlemen.   I would like initiative rolls, and then your declared action for the next round.  Adoven had initiative for the last round and disrupted Cass's spell.

So  I would like to see the same roles as you have been using -  PLUS an initiative roll.

Adoven grunts as the wooden blade slides through his defenses. "Nice shot" he comments as he tries to finish this match with another weapon combination.

His plans foiled, Cass attempts to cast again.

Cass elects to cast a spell, but it doesn't work out as Adoven manages to disrupt Cass' concentration by stabbing Cass in the leg with his rapier.  Adoven then follows up with another attack from his rapier (that goes wide) and a dig from his dagger (which doesn't).

Cass sinks to the floor, defeated - and Adoven is the Victor.

Adoven stands aside while the healers trot into the dueling salle. A few castings and Cass is able to stand up again. "Good match" Adoven says as he offers his hand.

“You have truly mastered your art.” Cass said as he shook Adoven’s hand. “Congratulations.”

Ince everyone has had a chance to recover, the next contestants are called.

Next: Table 1 - Cass Vs Cyrus  (Umpire DM)

Cyrus has been dreading this match the most of all. A battle against magic could prove deadly, one or two well timed blows could cripple Cyrus. But his own brute force would have to prevail if he was to win the day.

He lifted his sword in salute and then challenged Cass, saying “May my blade cut you down before your spells can take hold. Today you are my enemy, tomorrow my friend again.”

He moved forward to meet Cass bringing his sword down with a powerful arc of force.

Cass starts to cast a spell, but Cyrus steps into the middle of the duelling table and strikes first, his sword carving deep into his opponent.  Cass is distracted, and the spell fizzles on his lips.  However, Cass regains his composure to bring his blade around and slash Cyrus across the thigh.



Just a reminder, I want a new initiative roll Each Round as well as your action rolls.

Cyrus brushed off the blow from Cass and brought the long dueling sword down with both hand delivering another powerful strike.

Cass hopes that he can gain control of his new abilities to make a better show than previously.

Cass squeezes himself to the edge of the duelling table trying to get away from Cyrus, and starts to cast again.  However Cyrus seizes the opportunity and thrusts his sword, speculatively, towards Cass.  The blow misses, but Cass is forced to abandon his casting.  However, as he blocks the Strike, his sword catches Cyrus across the arm.

Cyrus adjusts his stance and brings his own blade around in an almighty sweeping blow that slams into the mayor’s side, hard, almost killing him.

“Yield.” Cass announces as he drops to the ground in blood, exhaustion, and defeat.

As Cass yields, and is helped from the table, Cyrus is declared the winner.

Cyrus stopped the arc of his blade as he had already turned it in a motion to bring it back down on Cass and stepped back allowing the man space to recover.

“Those were too fierce blows you took. Well fought. You are quite nimble, Cass.”

Once everyone has had a chance to recover, the next contestants are called.

With this larger sized table, you MUST specify any movement you make with a grid reference, along with any Skill rolls that accompany the movement.

Remember:  Initiative EACH round.

"Lord Mordane, you may choose your corner first." Dom smiles "Last time we met here, I was a single man and honour more important than life how the world has changed."

Dom allowed Cass to take the field then chose the opposite corner.

“I am sure that you will leave with both your honor and your life intact.” Cass smiled and then took up position at E1.

Dom moved to his position opposite Cass and waiting for the bout to start, when it did he moved to Cass and took a two handed strike.

Dom leaps across the duelling table to attack Cass, but Cass spots the move and ducks away from his opponents blow.  The Mayor manages to swing his own blade and catch the swordlord across the hip, then continues his own journey across the duelling table.  However, his movement gives Dom the opportunity to try again, however, Cass managed to evade that as well.  The two opponents face each other, a short distance apart, in the middle of the duelling table





OOC:  I am taking a bit of ‘poetic licence’ in how I describe things  :}  However:  Dom won initiative (just), moved across the table but missed his strike.  Cass, moving a bit later, managed to get his hit in, and then continued his movement, although that generated an AoO for Dom, which I rolled,  but that missed too.

Dom spun around and took a step towards Cass, he struck at the Mayor.

It seemed Cass was unable to get an edge so far. All he could do was answer with a single sword strike of his own.

Dom advances on Cass, but he is distracted by something he spots out of the corner of his eye, and Cass is easily able to parry Dom's blow.  Cass swings his blade again, and catches Dom on the calf.

Dom slashed low towards the Mayor's calf hoping to slow him down.

14:07, Today: Secret Roll: Domitius Aldori-Solanus rolled 17 using 1d20+10.  Initiative.

Unable to strike from a distance, Cass unleashed arcane missiles at Domitius instead.

The crowd mutter disapprovingly as Cass foregoes an attack with his sword, to cast a spell, and suddenly small motes of energy fly from his hand and strike Dom in the chest.  Dom, reacting quickly, steps forwards and slashes at Cass with his sword, and scores a good hit on Cass' leg, before both step backwards.



OOC:  Cass won initiative, cast Magic Missile and stepped back. The crowd are muttering in disapproval of the use of general spells, rather than touch or personal spells.  Dom got a strike in and then stepped backwards.

OOC : 20:48, Today: Cass Mordane rolled 12 using 1d20+4.  Initiative.

Dom frowned he wasn't expecting Cass to cast magic missile and was surprised his opponent had done so.  Still the umpire hadn't called a halt so Dom moved forward to reengage his opponent.

Dom grimaces but moves forward to reengage Cass, getting into range and striking just as the Mayor casts another spell.  Doms blade crashes into The mayors leg, but  Cass manages to keep himself together, as he strikes twice, the first hits Dom's arm, and a small electrical charge runs along the weapon and shocks Dom.  Cass then manages to score a second strike against Dom's shoulder, but this time there is no magical effect.



OOC:    Dom wins the inititave, moves in and hits Cass.  Cass makes his concentration check, hits with Spell Strike for Shocking grasp damage, then hits again with his normal  attack.

Dom struck a series of blows trying to get past Cass's defenses in a last ditch attack.

OOC:
21:22, Today: Domitius Aldori-Solanus rolled 24 using 1d20+10.  Initiative.

Domitius came on hard and fast. Cass tried to fend him off as best possible.

Domitius slashes  repeatedly at Cass, but his bows miss.  However, Cass starts to cast a spell, but is distracted by Dom's strikes, the Aldori finally manages to  get a blow through the Mayor's defence.  But what a strike it is!  It slices straight through Cass' defence and crack hard against the side of The mayor's knee.  It would have been enough to slice almost right through the leg, had the blade been sharp, but  even with the blunted duelling blade, the crack could be heard across the salon.

It is more than enough to put Cass onto the floor, writhing in pain, and clearly defeated.

Dom is declared the winner as one of the attendant priests rushes onto the table to cast a curing spell on Cass.

OOC:  Dom wins initiative and attacks, but doesn't hit Cass.  Cass casts a spell, but fails his concentration check to cast defensively.  AoO for Dom, which I rolled.  First roll was a 19 (Threat).  Crit confirmed with a roll of 18, and then 23 points of damage ....

That was the closest duel I have seen.

Cyrus had been watching with great interest and grimaced in shared pain as Cass went down.


OOC: Wow - That's tough. The spell strike getting interrupted like that is a pretty big disadvantage for Cass.

Dom breathing heavily and clutching at his side waited for the healers to do their work, "I though you had me there Lord Mordane, good bout I look forward to our rematch." he said with a smile.

“Excellent match!” Cass proclaimed.  “Rematch? I think I am getting too old for this, haha.”
