Fuzzy: Southern Chapter, Great Hall.

Henry sits at one of the central tables in the Grand Hall of the Southern Chapter’s meeting house.  At one end there is a raised platform with larger chairs, one almost a small throne, on it -  but they are only used on the most formal occasions.  While his own banner hangs over the small throne, Henry prefers more informal meeting arrangements.

The hall is lavishly decorated, with panelled walls decorated with the arms and banners of the members.  For a moment he smiles contentedly, as he remembers the early days when there were just half-a-dozen people, now there are forty or so Knights and Members of the Order - with their followers all pledged to defend this land.  From a wilderness, to a full-blown province of Brevoy, along with the independent city state of Tusk and Old Castle out there in the Narlemarch …  but down to business.

Two new people to talk to, one sent by his brother-in-law to be rewarded for his family’s support in developing the trade route north.  The other, a merchant, from Fort Drelev.  Not the first settler from Fort Drelev, but certainly the wealthiest and most influential.  Henry looks up, as they are shown into the hall.

OOC:  A fuzzy thread to introduce Theold and Tobias.  Feel free to come in and chat

A man, clad in a nice green shirt and a plaid kilt steps into the large hall. His blond hair is tied behind his head and his sky blue eyes scan the room before resting upon the Viscount of the Midmarch. In true Stonewall fashion he places his fist on his chest and bows in front of the man that had invited him. As he erects himself he looks at those present and notices a lack of heavy weaponry. He allows himself to smile as he remembers the advice old Ganish gave him, replacing his heavy weapon of war for a long dagger.
“It’s an honor to finally meet you Lord Henry.” He finally says, “It was a long trip to your holdings and I’m glad I had time to refresh myself.” Thinking back he tries to remember what he’s seen on his trip to the Stolen lands but he remembers little.

At a fingerspan under three foot, Tobias knew he would never be the most imposing of those ushered into the Viscount's presence, but he put his best foot forward, an easy smile on his face, as he followed the tall Stonewaller into the Grand Hall. Dressed in a linen shirt, dark trous and his Uncle Lem's second-best waistcoat - newly embroidered with the sigil of Lilycotton Holdings, his house - he presented as the successful merchant he was, and only the wrappings and bandages over his hands and forearms spoke differently. He carried no weapons, and few other accountments of any note.

His easy smile carried him toward the raised dias where the Viscount sat beneath his banner, a few paces behind, and he bowed gracefully if with a hint of unfamiliarity, hurrying to stand next to the man, "Lord Henry; Tobias Cotton, once of Fort Drelev, at your service"

Glancing up at the kilted figure next to him, he offered a smile and a nod in greeting

"Take a seat." Henry indicates the many spare seats at the table, before turning to a black clad man, who has been standing in the background.  "Bart?  Will you fetch some refreshments for our guests, and then join us, of course."

"Brother Bart is one of my longest serving retainers.  He was on our first expedition ...  but I digress.  Tell me what you hope to achieve here, in our new lands.  I am always interested to hear people's plans."

Theold nods his head once more and once towards the Halfling (I assume you're a Halfling) before sitting down at the table. Taking the cup from "Bart" he takes a sip: "Plans my lord? My father send me with the promise of business into these parts. Wool is our family's gold and we're quite handy with steel too. We'd like to see and tame part of this region to help people help themselves. Too many a man are standing on the legs of dead people. Wouldn't you agree?" Unable to get comfortable here, Theold's left leg starts to fidged ever so slightly, after a little time he's able to control it.

Deftly ensuring he had secured a cushion or two, the young halfling merchant clambered up to join Lord Henry and this other newcomer at the table, taking only a light repast by halfling standards. He nodded politely as Theold spoke, offering his own wisdom once the man had finished, “It is true, Master Stonewaller, though in Fort Drelev we have seen strife from men who stand on their own feet also. Trading has become difficult there, as you’re aware Lord Henry, taxes stifling opportunities as my Uncle would say. That’s what brings me east, a shove and a tug both”

Chuckling a little to himself, he added, “I’m hoping to re establish myself here, trading up and down the rivers. But I’m yet to decide where best to start: Midmarch, Tusk, one of the smaller settlements. In time I would hope to take some of the Lakeland’s even further east”

Henry nods thoughtfully as the two newcomers speak, weighing their words carefully.  He turns to Theold first ”I understand that my brother-in-law has come to an arrangement with your father, that for his support for DELEM’s plans to build a trade route north through Stonewall, we would help you get established here.  As our part of the arrangement, I am prepared to place  Westgate under your control.  It is a small town, not much there yet, originally built to act as a gateway to Midmarch but, now we have expanded west, it has become a stopping place on our northern trade road, and DELEM is the main developer there.  If you are up to it, you will be able to develop the town and eventually claim the title of Lord or Westgate.  There is even land to expand your holdings.  However, the land there flat and fertile, and better suited to crops rather than sheep.  But then, there is always a market for corn.  Baron Lebeda-Ondari, of Ringbridge, is developing a healthy trade in Woll based around his hillier holdings.”  Then he turns to Brother Bart, ”You have the papers ready?” and when Bart nods, Henry indicates that the papers should be passed across to Theold.

As Theold reads the papers, Henry turns to Tobias, and a light smile plays across his lips as he speaks.  ”While you won’t find the tax regime, or the environment, as restricting as in Fort Drelev, you will find competition on the waterways around The Southern Region.  V&A Shipping are a large merchant house, with ships that link us to both Restov and and Mivon.  House Yitis are smaller, and deal in ferry services and local trade.  However, both Lord Marik and the Lady Safiya also have smaller Merchant Houses with their own agendas.

Lakelands to the East?  Do you mean around Lake Silverstep?  Lord Domitius, and his party, are exploring that area at the moment, and I believe he has an eye on settling there as well.

With the rest of Lord Domitius retinue scattered around Midmarch Tic found himself waiting of to one side listening to the goings on.  He sat quietly barely calling attention to himself unless a pretty maid walked past then he gave a smile.  TTic was dressed in the livery of House Solanus red with three golden suns, on his sash was the Black Griffon Domitius's personal emblazon on the houses colours.

He watched the other halfling closely then hearing Dom's name he felt it was time to speak though strictly speaking it probably wasn'y his place.  Then again Tic had never been particularly good at knowing his place.  "Lord Henry speaks true good sirs, Lord Domitius inteands to ettle the lands around the lake but he has always been friendly to the small folk and I was planning on moving most of my clan out there once things are more established.  Indeed Lord Domitius has spoken about setting up a Great Kennel at some point to breed riding dogs for our people and the folks in Jovvox.  I suspect the foothills would be a good place to start herding sheep too for that matter."

“Did someone say small folk?” Magatha strutted into the room. “Who’s smaller than me?”

Looking around, Magatha noted that she might just have an inch or two on a few of these fellows. Nothing wrong with that. “Boats and goats, is it? Oh no. Ships and sheep.”

Magatha is a gnome standing 3'2" high and weighing 35 pounds carrying herself as if she were the Queen of the World. She has magenta (reddish purple) hair and chartreuse (yellow-green) eyes. Magatha is fearless. She is relentless. She is also kind of nice.

Nodding along to Lord Henry's words, with a pleased smile at the promise of a less oppressive tax regime, it seemed Tobias was not overly surprised that others had staked a claim to Lake Silverstep already. He sipped at the tissane that had been provided to gather his thoughts in response, when the other halfling offered a little more background.

"Perhaps the Lord Domitius would welcome investors", he mused, considering the riding dogs both he and his cousin were fond of, "Either in the settlement or the kennels..."

He trailed off, considering, until Magatha entered the room. She also earned a tip of the head, and he offered her a greeting in gnomish, adding in the common tongue, "And it would be my folk with the interest in ships... though we are still considering where to base our operations"

“Where are my manners?” Magenta gave Henry a well executed curtsy. “King Henry.” For good measure, she thought it polite to honor the other guests with a bow so she dipped low at the waist and then leaned up. “We’re going to start building a port in Silverton soon as well. Theold's eyes widen at the mention of being granted land, a small town nontheless!
He bows again, placing his fist on his chest: "My lord, I am ever greatful and I won't disappoint you." Reading the papers carefully he seems to quietly mouth the words he reads, at least until he realizes he's doing it and presses his lips together. Keeping the papers save he was about to ask something else when others came to his attention. He bows and raises his cup as sign of respect but watched the short woman. "Theold Falke of Stonewall though now I'll have to rethink my title."

This hall seem like a hot spot for the vertically challenged, as Drezin enters as well. Granted, the Dwarf was not quite as short as Tic, miss Primrose or the good mr Cotton, but he was still shorter than a man. He carried himself well though, a sort of humble dignity exudes from the blonde dwarf.

His hair is long but beard kept fairly short for a dwarf, although both hair and beard are braided and adorned with numerous rings, a common symbol of Torag. The rustle of the metal in his armor and the sound of heavy boots means that his entrance is by no means subtle, nor would he necessary wish it to be. He has no foes in this hall.

"Hail, my Lords and Lady." Each of the company present receives a nod in turn. He was glad to see gnomes, although a little eccentric at times Drezin had always found them to be good company.
"Your sister sends her regards, Lord Henri, although it has been some time since we spoke, so perhaps those regards are past their due-date by now. I suppose that wasn't why you invited me here?" His voice was less gruff than one would imagine, more firm and with a slight regal tone, although with an unmistakably dwarven accent.

Henry smiles lightly as the Dwarf enters, ”Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce Drezin al Golka, freshly in from Brundeston.  I thank you for your message, Drezin.  While my sister often sends a letter, they tend to be as terse a greeting that she sends with you.   Mind you, she was always like that.  However, the invitation to join us was purely social.  Theold, Tobias and yourself -  have all arrived about the same time, and I thought that you might wish to get to know each other.  After all, I doubt that any of you have made that many friends or contacts in this part of the world yet.”

This time he smiles more broadly, ”And, I suspected that if I let the word get a round, a few of these reprobates would turn up as well.” He waves his hand to encompass the others who have joined them, although the smile takes any sting out of his words.

”So take a seat, help yourself to some tea, and relax somewhat.”

Feel free to chat amongst yourselves and get to know each other(that counts for new and longer standing characters).  You never know, you might make useful contacts.  Henry is still here for conversation – but he can only talk in one conversation …

Much of the on-going conversations' context were a bit lost on him. Perhaps he was still fatigued from his travel, even though it had been relatively comfortable accompanying Lord Henry's caravan.

He nods as he sees the halflings and gnome talking, unsurprised that those of the small races are sticking together.  But Tic's suggestion of an introduction to Dom, gives him an idea.  "Drezin.  I could do the same for you.  Would you like a letter of introduction to some of the other Dwarves in the region?"

”Plans for Westgate?” Henry pauses for a moment, and he thinks  back over the history of the town. ”Westgate was originally built to act as the western gateway to Midmarch, along with east gate, on the other side of our holdings, over by the pass that leads to Varnhold.  Neither were intended to be strong defence points, but more of an early warning system.  Since then, we have claimed the land out as far as Wyvern Bridge and started developing across the land between, to take advantage of the fertile, and flat, land there.  So the focus for Westgate changed, to become a safe stopping place on the road between Newgate and Wyvern Bridge.  That section of the road leaves Oston, and has two simple stops before it reaches Westgate, and passes perilously close to the Fey Enclave in the Narlemarch.  Westgate is the first good stopping point, which is why DELEM built a town base there.”

He pauses for a sip of his drink and, perhaps, to collect his thoughts, before he continues.  ”So it meets all of the objectives that I had for the town.  I think, if I were in your position, I  would start by getting to know the town and then go about making it into a home for myself and my family.  But then, I am a married man with children.” the Viscount smiles at his own ‘family man’ status, and the fact that he has heirs to inherit the fruits of his hard work.  One way or another, Henry’s family will not want for anything in the next few generations.  His family holdings are spread wide, and are still expanding into new areas.
”I think, with its position in the rich plains, I would try and develop Westgate as an agricultural market town.  There is plenty of land for expansion, which means  you could have a lot of farms to grow the corn, and other crops, that both Midmarch and Tusk  need.  I suspect that you could have enough corn  to develop a fairly self-contained brewing economy, first with ales, and then, Perhaps, with some whiskey.  While the schnapps that The Roth’s make is very palatable, nothing beats a decent whiskey.”

Henry grins again, perhaps savouring the imaginary taste of a decent, locally brewed, whiskey.

OOC:  No problem.  Henry is there to talk to,  as is Brother Bart -  a Priest of Pharasma.

Those development plans are a suggestion – and the first one that came to mind.  Westgate does have fertile land, it would be good for farms.  Grain is always important, and the main by-product of grain is beer and whiskey.  And, just as importantly, can be realised as a self-contained growth plan.  Farms are part of the strategy that I use to develop Newgate on Henry’s behalf.  *shrug*  There are other ways of development that work just as well, Marik has based his holdings on controlling the Metal and Ore supplies in the region.  Safiya built a pair of canals that link Tusk and Restov via the Shrike River.  Cass is a big player in the Hospitality field, while Dom has built up WSM (a merchant house) to fund his holding's development.

What ever you choose, you will still want to encourage external investors if you can.  Tusk and, to a lesser extent, Wyvern Bridge are the fastest growing settlements, and they both rely on external investors for that growth.

Listening with interest and nodding along, Theold's head quickly becomes heavy and sleepy. Shaking his head a little and reaching around for his drink, he takes a deep gulp and nods "My lord Henry, is there blood of the fey or dragons in your family?" He asks, half seriously "I was thinking about taking a good look around the area and to see if its viable for some good whiskey production. Clearly some sort of precognition ability must run in your family." He laughs and bows his head. "From what I've read on this document of yours, it seems to be perfect for agriculture. Perhaps I could interest you into investing some of your coinage into a brewery? Or better yet using your contacts to get some of the old barrels into the hopefully newly build brewery."
Tapping his chin with his finger he thinks about it for a moment and talks to himself more than to the Viscount. "Indeed, some barrels from my old neighbors might be just what I could use to make some good whiskey here. Though I'm gonna have to increase the guard and..." He trails off as he is seemingly deep in thought.

Ha, I was having the same thought. Originally I wanted to focus on sheep but since the area is rather flat I was thinking exactly the same. Perhaps I should get some dwarves to brew their beer and keep another half for Whiskey

Henry smiles thinly.  "My charter says I need to clear this land and make the southern borders of Brevoy safe, and since I have been here, I have ordered executions and brandings to help me fulfil those duties." But then he continues, "I have chosen to keep  the land we have cleared safe, by settling and imposing a judicial system, which has made the lands safer and means I can be less 'finite' in my judgements.  BUT, you should note that we don't have any long term prisons in either Tusk or Midmarch.  Lock-ups, yes.  Prisoners that I have to feed and care for, no."  He lets the consequences of that policy sink in for a moment, while he takes a sip from his cup.

"However, that area I am sending you to is just outside our border, and therefore just outside the southern border of Brevoy.  It is not subject to the normal laws of either Southern Region or Brevoy as a whole. By making you deputies of the order, I have given you authority to deal with the matter as you see fit.  In the process you will be acting for me, to carry out my charter duties of making that area safe and no threat to our citizens."

Tusk and Midmarch appear to be well run, with no public fear of bad or inhumane treatment -  but there is clearly a steel behind Henry's urbane exterior.

"Those clarifications are helpful, Lord Henry", nodded the halfling merchant, pleased at what he was hearing. Law and predictability made for a solid backbone for commerce. Within that in mind he addressed the unspoken subtext of the Lord's remarks, "We will be certain our actions reflect justly on you"

Laughing a little at Tic's report, he retorted back, "Underwater palaces and treasure beyond measure, I can stomach. But true love, that is preposterous"

Perhaps a little more soberly, he continued, "Those folk I bring with me are familiar with the lakes and the rivers; perhaps we might be of some small help with the nixie"

Then he addresses the question of The Roths.  "You should always be able to find one of them at The Dragon's Den, here in Tusk.  Altogether there are four of them.  Dame Berta, Gedd, Wyn and his wife Winnie.  They arrived on the first ship to dock here from Mivon, that was a few years ago now, but they tell me they come from much further afield than that.  Since then, they have built quite a collecting of inns, taverns, breweries, wineries and even a distillery.  Sometimes I think that there would be nothing decent to drink in Midmarch, if it wasn't for the Roths."

Andalon rises to address those assembled in the Great Hall, glad that he has had time to bathe and dress appropriately for the occasion.

"Lord Henry, I am pleased to be able to report a successful outcome from the mission to Varnhold that you sent us on. It is not the outcome any of us anticipated when we set forth, for you sent us to go to Varn and make a trade arrangement with them, with Maegar Varn, to allow trade between Varn and Midmarch.

"I am sure that Pipre, Mariam and El have already reported back to you about what we found at Varnhold? All the people had vanished and the fort was occupied by a band of spriggans, who we managed to defeat.

"We found signs that there had been ongoing conflict between the Varnholders and the Nomen Centaurs from the plains southeast of Varnhold. The three ladies decided to report back here after Varnhold while Adoven, Ethankos, Cass, Marik, Kendrick, Jensen and I rode on to meet with the Nomen centaurs in hopes of finding out what happened to the Varnholders and perhaps even establishing better relations with the Nomen in the process.

"I am pleased to report that we were able to meet with their leader, Aecora, and won her trust by returning to them the great bow that the Varnholders had 'stolen' from them, and by the news that we had slain the leader of the spriggans, who were great enemies of the Nomen. By the way, their name, Nomen, reflects the female-dominated nature of that centaur tribe. There were very few males to be seen there at all.

"The Nomen knew nothing of the disappearance of the Varnholders but they did report sightings of a strange figure in a valley to the southwest where their tribe is forbidden to venture. Their legends report it as the burial place centuries ago of an enemy warlord called Vordakai and they are forbidden to go there for fear of reawakening that ancient warlord. The scout who reported the sightings was Xamanthe, daughter of Aecora, and she had gone back and was now missing.

"We followed that report to the valley in hopes of finally tracking down the Varnholders. What we found was an island in a river in that valley, with a maze of tunnels, crypts and the tomb of the ancient cyclops warlord Vordakai deep within that island. The Nomen were right to fear him, for he had ultimately become a fearsome type of undead called a lich, as we discovered when we finally penetrated the defences of his tomb to confront him. I believe we were fortunate to encounter him no more than a few months after his reawakening, for it appears his powers had atrophied somewhat during his centuries of sleep. He was still a formidable foe and stretched us to the utmost limit of our resources before we were finally able to slay him. I am pleased to be able to report that we also located and destroyed the phylactery that protected his soul and would have allowed the lich to regenerate and rise again if not destroyed.

"We found the bodies of a number of the Varnholders there, in his tomb. The lich had somehow captured them and brought them from Varnhold by magical means we do not fully understand. We found a total of 42 enchanted containers called soul jars, which may be the tools he used for that task. Each of those soul jars still contained the living soul of a Varnholder. We have freed those 42 souls and their bodies regenerated around their spirits and they live again as free men and women. Many have returned to their homes in Varnhold. Sadly, Maeger Varn and his household were among the victims slain by the lich.

"I understand that Lord Domitius is taking over control of Varnhold, now. I trust that he will be able to build upon the good relations we have established with the Nomen centaurs, so far. We did manage to rescue Xamanthe from the island, so that should help too."

Then we discovered a lair of strange Mudmen on the shores 9f Lake Silverstep.  This was followed by a group of Obsidian Gargoyles before returning to Tusk.

I would stand in agreement that other solutions be put to the wayside and that Kendrick be allowed to act as he has felt led.”

Cass allowed his words time to take root within everyone present. It was no small thing that was being considered within these great halls. He would let others speak on the matter further if they wished, but he felt that he had had his say in these regards. So after an appropriate period of silence from himself, he spoke on the other matters presented.

“I am sure that Henry is aware that I am rather pliant to move in the direction that he feels is best for the realm as a whole. Le Maistre, Vallani, our good friends the Roths, and others have expanded north near New Stetven and Forts Drelev and Sarenko. And I think that there are serious matters to discuss with the River Kingdoms lest blades be our next form of interaction. I have also put consideration that it might be a good idea for representatives of our great free city of Tusk to meet with the representatives of the great free city of Restov. “OK. Let’s start with The Eye.  Kendrick goes, obviously.  Andalon, you have been central to this so far, and you have the ability to get everyone home, and help Kendrick achieve blindness,”  Henry winces as he says it, “Without having to gouge his other eye out.  Marceline, would you go too?  I know that your sect is dedicated to sending the undead to their final resting place, but I hope that a trip to Pharasma’s boneyard will  make up for missing out on the trip to Candlemere Island.  Brother Bart tells me that you will be able to summon a spirit guide to help you find Kendrick’s gravestone.”  Yet again, Henry winces as he speaks. “Vova, I hope you will be able to move The Eye from its resting place onto the gravestone without touching it and,”  With a glance towards Dom and Alisa, “I will ask Barbatius to travel with you, both as moral and physical support, should it be required.”

He pauses for a moment, before continuing.

“I have been promising Adoven a trip to Candlemere Island for quite a while now,”
Henry smiles slightly, pleased to finally live up to his promise,  “We know that last time someone went to the island, they met a strange dancing spirit, so I would ask you to accompany him, Ethankos, although I am afraid that denies you to opportunity to travel to the Boneyard while you still live.  Cass, as leader of Greater Tusk, the city that has supported Adoven’s request, I think you and Jensen should join them.  Then round the group out with Sayifa and Tobias.”

Again he pauses.

“I know that Dom and Alisa need to spend time in and around d their new holding, and Socha can travel with you, although Barbatius is needed elsewhere.  Marik, and one of the few who have met the Nomen previously, I would like you to travel with them, and Gabriel’s wilderness skills may well help when  you are in the Nomen planes.  Rana, I hope that you will accompany them, and support your friends, as well.”

This time Henry looks all around the room, “Does that work for you all?  We could do a bit of shuffling about, but that seems like the best fit to me.”

“Please forgive me if I speak out of turn.” Cass began in as humble a voice as he could muster, and he hoped that all of the sincerity that he intended would be revealed. “But I can’t help but believe that these tensions are at least partially my own fault. During the uprising in Brevoy, I spoke boldly and perhaps too passionately and I have no intention of making that mistake again. In considering the Mivon Aldori, I mistakenly spoke of them as one with all Aldori, specifically those of Rostland. I have come now to consider them as two different entities.”

Cass was sorry that he could not provide a more concise summation, but the fullness of detail required this long winded form. “Perhaps to be even further divided in groupings, if truth be told. But in my brashness I made a grave error against all Aldori and offered direct offense to Lord Domitius Aldori-Solanus. And although it was not my intention, it was the result. I have since apologized to Lord Aldori-Solanus who was gracious enough to accept my apology and allow me to be one of those blessed to participate in his precious wedding ceremony to Lady Alisa.”

“During the discourse, other matters were brought to question, including the responsibilities of those of the Southern Chapter. Although I do not speak for Lord Aeris in any manner, I believe that he had no intent to offer offense to Lord Aldori-Solanus, but his own questions did have a similar effect in being taken as an offense. So it was my own fault in leading the discussion in such a haphazard direction without proper etiquette and form.”

“I know Lord Marik to be an honorable man. In fact, I believe I owe my life to him more than any man in the realm.” Cass paused to offer an apologetic smile. “No offense to Sir Jensen, who is dedicated to saving my bacon. Marik has simply had more years and opportunity to do so. Again, I do not propose to speak for Lord Aeris, but I do feel that we are something of the same stripe, having grown up as commoners among rugged circumstances. Even though I am honored to bear the title of lord, I have never been comfortable bearing a title beyond Elkin’s mocking of me as ‘The Mordane.’ So proper gravity might not be given as understood by those of noble experience.”

“What I am trying to say is that I hope Domitius will give Marik a clean slate. And that I trust Marik with my life. He’s cared for it better than I have.” As if to underline his point, Cass finished his words by taking a large and long drink from an ale tankard triple the size of those found in local taverns.

Marik glared at Domitius as he spoke, making it quite clear to the swordlord that he had indeed heard the insult thrown his way, and was none too impressed. His demeanor seemed to lighten somewhat at Cass' heartfelt words, and he nodded in thanks to his friend, the one he'd known longer than anyone else in Midmarch. "Thank you Cass, but I am quite certain we are even."

He then turned to Domitius, "Lord Aldori-Solanus," he said, placing special emphasis on the first word. "As Lord LeMaistre has pointed out, I do in fact have some experience with the Nomen, having of course been one of those who negotiated for peace with them as well as rescuing the daughter of their leader. Oh, and of course liberating the estate that you have chosen to call home...but perhaps you are not in need of such expertise?"

Domitius returned Mariks glare with one equally fierce "Alas Lord Henry has seen fit to place you with me.
As such I have little choice in the matter.
he gives a shrug then lifted his left hand and regarded his finger nails before continuing in a condescending tone.

Still there may be some value in your attendance, without Barbatius there we will need someone to set up the tents and other menial tasks, I expect you have some cantrip that is suitable.

Alisa had sat listening to the exchanges, her best diplomat-poker face in place.  She sat still, no trace of surprise in her expression, her gaze shifting  briefly to trade that glance with Rana.

"Aye, just as you always pitch in with such tasks, that some lords would consider beneath their dignified behinds," Alisa quipped with sincerity to Domitius.    And then placed a hand upon his arm:

"Husband, I'm going to speak very frankly, here.  Let's take this as an opportunity to try and smooth relations with Lord Aeris.   Remember, not so very long ago, you and 'the Mordane' were trading cold words and facing each other at swordpoint.  We worked through that, and moved past it, and now you get along well.  To the benefit of us and him.   May we not try once more?   Prior to meeting up with you this last time, Rana and I traveled together, and I was telling her the one thing we have often lacked in our outings is a dedicated arcane caster.    I was sizing Rana up for that, in fact, but learned she has other commitments with Lord Aeris.  But she suggested we get to know him better, and collaborate with him, where that makes sense.   And now, here is an opportunity, to see if it works."     Alisa paused before continuing.

"Try working with him, this one time.   If by the end, you feel it isn't for you, then next time I'll support you in finding other options.    But this time, we really could use someone who's already familiar with the Nomen, and has earned some measure of their trust.  Please, let's not cast that boon aside, without true reason."

Henry throws Dom a hard glance and is about to say something, when Alisa beats him to it.  So he sits quietly, waiting for the Swordlord's response.

Although he changes his mind fairly quickly. "Lord Sunsmarch, I will remind you that Baron Aeris is a senior, and well respected, member of my court and this council.  Insults are not appropriate, no matter what your personal feelings are."

A quick glance towards Marik, implies that he should follow the same strictures.

Domitius turned his glare from Marik to look at Alisa, then Cass in the light of Henry's rebuke.  He paused for half a second then  looked towards his former liege.

"Very well Lord Midmarch, perhaps it is best I recuse myself from this council. he states as he rises from his seat and with a nod to Barbatius and Alisa leaves the room.

Rana paused before she left the room as the Lord Mayor began speaking.  Any insight he could offer into the apparent rift between Marik and Dom was worth waiting to hear.  She listened without comment as the men 'discussed' and then Alisa tried to smooth the matter over.  She nodded to the other woman, then glanced from Lord Henry, to Marik, then Dom then back to Marik.

"If I may?" Rana interjected once Lord Henry made his thoughts clear.  "I don't necessarily know why either of you came to Midmarch, but for myself I can say that Midmarch has allowed me to become who I am and the person I was meant to be.  Alisa may well understand the challenges I would have faced in Stoneclimb, but it isn't something I dwell on or speak about often.  I presume that each person who has come here, and made their homes here, and contributed to the prosperity of these lands has their own reasons and some will have stated their whys, and others will have not."

A slightly sad smile touched the sorceress' lips, but then she smiled before continuing.  "I think of it as the change that occurs from catepillar to butterfly.  We have all gone through changes and it is those changes that we need to embrace.  It is as if we have been given an opportunity to be a better version of who we were and perhaps, Dom," her gaze settled on the swordlord, "what this land offers you is the chance to become more than just a typical Aldori swordlord, or at least a more understanding version of an Aldori swordlord."  Rana's gaze then moved to Marik, and her smile seemed to soften ever so slightly.  "And you, Lord Marik, have the capacity to see the best in people and bring out the best in people as is evident through the community you have built in New Dawn."

A sigh escaped Rana's lips unbidden as she felt that her thoughts and words were jumbled and not well structured, but she had more to say.  "I think that what is important is that Lord Henry trusts each of us and has put his trust in each of us; and, likewise, I believe that we trust him.  To my mind, it then follows that we need to trust in those people that Lord Henry trusts."

She glanced at Cass and nodded slightly at the Lord Mayor, "I appreciate the Lord Mayor's attempt to help to smooth over this rift, however, I believe that further discussions would be better had in private.  Don't you?"  She looked pointedly at Marik, then Dom, and it was apparent from her tone that she expected them to agree with her.  She turned to Lord Henry, curtsying slightly, "If you will excuse me."   Rana turned and now left the main hall for the 'planning room'.

The ample priest of Pharasma smiles and nods as Sir Henry allocates him to the mission to Candlemere.

"In truth, I've no driving need to visit the Boneyard," he vouchsafes to Adoven.  "I'm certain to see those endless lands one day, as will we all ... and I'd much rather not spoil the surprise !" he snorts.

"And with Marceline and Andalon already chosen for that journey, I'm sure I'll be far better suited to accompany you."

The obvious tension between Domitius and Marik puzzles Ethankos, for while he knows little of the Lord Aldori-Solanus, he has counted the mage amongst his companions on several occasions and enjoyed his company ... but refrains from becoming involved, reasoning that it is up to the pair of them to resolve whatever matter is between them.

"I came to these lands that I might shepherd troubled souls back to their final rest," he rumbles.  "Thus I eagerly anticipate our coming visit to Candlemere."

Adoven nods. "Frankly, I've been seeing this pattern of behavior develop in Dom over the last few years. He's no longer associating himself with Midmarch in his mind. He's been realigning himself with the Aldori. I fear what direction he will choose should the Aldori ever seek to take these lands from us."

Vova, who up to this point has been lounging in a chair with an empty glass in one hand and several empty bottles nearby is mercilessly pecked awake by an angry peacock, generating a few startled exclamations from the dozing reprobate... But his protests die off as he's glared at by said bird, then has to wave a hand in the general direction of the lord, explaining.

"Uhm, hello? Yeah, no... Sorry. No can do. Can't go around breaking magical artefacts, even evil ones... Lot of work goes into them, lot of knowledge, lore and effort. Smashing them's the sort of thing I'd get shouted at for days."

Henry Nods at Vova's comment, while he doesn't quite understand it, he isn't prepared to force the strange man into doing  something he doesn't feel that he can.   He thinks for a moment or two, before commenting. "Ok. Why don't you join Adoven's group in visiting Candlemere Island.  I'll ask Tobias to go with Adoven instead."
