Fuzzy: Developments 4720: Midmarch Province
Rana fidgeted under Henry's steady gaze. It wasn't that she was in awe of him, although in part that might account for some of her uneasiness, it was more to do with the fact that she decidedly felt like a fish out of water when speaking to anyone about government-type things. She was certain that, if she put her mind to it she could make sense of how it all worked in practice; however, her head seemed to always be filled with stray thoughts and ideas that distracted her attention from anything more, well, substantive.
"Yes, Lord Henry, that had been my thought. The people of Gurdinford have lived there, on their own and unsupported for quite a while, is how I understand it. They are fiercely proud and independent, but recent events have made them aware of their vulnerabilities. Ush, one of the daughters of the head of the family, Besh, has become a dear companion to myself and is, in fact, training with Gabriel Aeris to learn the skills needed to become a scout, or tracker." Rana could feel herself starting to ramble so stopped speaking to take a breath before she continued. "In my most recent visit to Gurdinford, the village was being attacked by a giant cave shrew, or owlbear as I've heard it also called. Prior to me arriving, with Ush, Gabriel and Ma Lord Aeris, Brother Florin, Hargrymm Silverhammer and Robert, sword master at the V&A sword school, were helping the villagers against the creature. My concern for the villagers was so great that I, probably impulsively I'm afraid, have promised them help in protecting their village and their way of life. I will be funding a watch tower for the area, but I felt that they should be part of Midmarch. Lord Cyrus had spoken to them about the possibility when I travelled with him to that area previously, but the villagers were less than enthusiastic about the suggestion. They value their way of life and are strongly independent, but now they see how those very things could be taken away from them if they do not align themselves, in some way, with a larger group of people. My hope is that, although they might become part of Midmarch, their will be little development in the area so that they can retain the essence of their lives, whilst being afforded the security of something larger than them."
Her voice trailed off, but then she spoke again. "In truth I hadn't thought of any other possibilities for assisting them, except yourself, but if there are other options that you could suggest I would be happy to listen." Rana stopped, again, muttering under her breath to herself, "I expect that I should have spoken with Marik first for advice, idiot girl!"
