The Grand Ball

During the week after the wedding, Restov prepares for the Mayor’s Grand Ball.  All of the ‘good’ inns fill up, the shops in Borough Court (where you brought your nice clothes and jewellery) are busy and there seems to be people everywhere. Carriages for the event are difficult to come by as no one wants to walk through the streets in all of their finery – and arriving in a coach looks so much better anyway.  However, Henry has used his contacts I the city and managed to secure a large coach for the day - it means that you can’t all arrive at the same time, but at least you can arrive in the proper style.

The main event is held in the Ball Room, a circular room set on the ground floor of the main tower.    Tapestries adorn the walls below a wooden walkway that runs all the way around the room and serves as a musicians’ gallery.  Small tables, each with a few upright chairs are set around the walls below the gallery, while the middle of the floor is left free for dancing or just mingling.  Next door, the mayor’s Council chamber has been rearranged to make a second, quieter room with buffet tables and a bar.  However, a plethora of waiting staff make the rounds, carrying trays of canapes  and making sure that everyone’s glass stays topped up.

A butler announces everyone as they arrive, reading names and titles from the invitation cards that they present, and while the mayor greets the most important guests personally, most people are ushered inside to find their own way.  As the Governor of Midmarch, Henry is among four Guest of Honour, along with Maegar Varn (who leads a new settlement south of Restov), Baron Drelev (who is founding a settlement to the West of Midmarch) and Sir Reginald Porter (leader of the Iron Wraiths, who have been sent even further west).  Somehow, Brother Bart has found his way into the ball, dressing the black robes of his Pharasmin faith, and is able to help you identify people when you need assistance.

Baron Drelev is with his wife (a short woman who insists of carrying a small dog everywhere) his brother-in-law Imeckus Stroon (who is clearly a mage of some sort) and his guard captain Lord Numesti.  Lord Numesti is accompanied by his two daughters, Tamary and Kisandra.  Maegar Varn is accompanied by his advisor Caspar Morgarion (a priest of Erastil) and a young half-orc woman (who Brother Bart tells you is his adopted daughter), while Sir Reginald is accompanied by a small group of people, who all look somewhat battle hardened, who make up the rest of the leadership of the Iron Wraiths.

All of the council members are there, including the Banker, Lord and lady Lebeda-Berain (whom you have already met) and Darain al Gorka (The older dwarf who has been selling you armour) as well as Sir Ferdinand, Alex and Dame Velia.  Other guests who catch your eye include Fosco Marchant (middle aged Halfling in a very plain Courtier’s outfit) who is accompanied by a female Halfling, dressed in dark red Academic robes that are decorated with white roses.    Even Gibbs, Mia, Robert, Peter & Genie, who Adoven met at Gibb’s Sword School are there as well.

But there are many other guests there as well – young, old, attractive, less so, nicely perfumed or with bad breath – the whole gamut of anyone who is anyone in Restov and the surrounding areas.

You can approach any of the NPCs for a conversation -  or look specifically for someone (or some role) you think should be there, but hasn't been mentioned.
Rather than describing all of the City Council again -  you can find their details on this page :-
http://rp.baileymail.net/doku....restov#personalities

For those on you interested in Local Politics -  this is your chance to find things out.
For those of you who want patrons and allies to help you with ‘developments’ in Midmarch  - this is a good place to look.

The Grand Ball

Andalon arrived in the coach with some of the other guests from the Silver Dagger Inn where he had been staying. He was certainly grateful for the Banker's advice on suitable clothing and jewellery for the ball. He felt that he fitted in quite well in his dark blue academic robe with a pair of broad white stripes decorated with Abadar's golden key all the way down. It did occur to him that the clothes he wore beneath the robe - a white shirt and dark blue trousers in the modern style - might be a lot more comfortable without the robe, despite the buckle shoes that graced his feet. However, he did love the silver and topaz key holy symbol of Abadar and all that it represented.

When he arrived he spent a little while circulating among the guests and saying hello to those he already knew before he sought out Brother Bart for some more information about some of the other guests he did not recognise.

"Brother Bart, it is good to see you here. Perhaps you could tell me a little more about some of the people here from the other three settlements that are being established south and west of Restov? I was thinking this might be an excellent opportunity to make some contacts with suitable people who can help us set up commerce and trade between our settlements in future, unless there is any tension already with the other settlements that I am not aware of? Would you happen to know whether there are any other Abadaran priests in the other settlements yet? If you are not sure I expect I would be able to find out from Banker Russino later but I suspect she is going to be in great demand here and it might be quite some time before I could ask her."

Brother Bart smiles and slides around behind Andalon, so the he can speak quietly over the Abadarian’s shoulder.

"Varn comes from a family up north but has lived in Restov for a while.  He brought the Charter to build a settlement to the east of us, across the Tors of Levenies and almost due south of Restov.  While we had bandits to contend with, he has unruly centaurs.  The girl is his adopted daughter and heir, the child of his wife’s sister apparently.  Although both of the older women are dead now.

The Iron Wraiths have been sent to subdue the Glenebon uplands on the borders of Numeria – a long way to the west of us.  They are a well-established Mercenary Company, although they need to be up there.  I have heard tales of giants riding great shaggy elephants over that way -  but that sounds too fantastic to be true.

Baron Drelev is a Surtova and one of the king’s favourites.   He is building a stronghold on the banks of Lake Hooktongue.  His character talks about securing the lake and keeping it free of pirates, but I suspect it also has something to do with Surtovan control  along the East Sellen.  Lord Numesti, on the other hand, is from Rostland and seen as independent.  Although there are rumours – some say that he is supported by the lesser nobles from New Stetven, other say he is associated with the Lebeda, while others say he is another Surtovan protégé.  Take your pick …."

All the time the Pharasmin Priest’s eyes have been scanning the crowd, making sure that he sees everything that goes on.

The Grand Ball

Cass didn't have any qualms about being one of those among the first carriage trip. He had no need to be fashionably late, or even fashionably on time. Of course, there was a mindset that stated arriving too early made one seem overly eager and perhaps even desperate.

This mindset was in error, Cass concluded. After all, the only ones who would see him arrive early where already in place themselves. And while one could easily become a pest by overly engaging the hosts, guests of honor, and other attendees of high note, such bad manners were the flaw of those who often arrived late as those who arrived early. One just needed to know how to conduct oneself with the social graces.

Besides, arriving early allowed Cass to take in elements of the ball that he might miss once a crowd had gathered. Like the selection of musicians who had already settled in and began performing the light music in the background.

Cass waved and gave the group a friendly smile. They were each musicians of accomplishment and many had worked well together before. The hosts were sure to get their money's worth from this lot, and each performer was sure to walk away a full purse richer once the night was over.

Cass was on his way to fortify himself with a glass of sparkling wine when he literally bumped into someone else that he knew.

"Gavin, you old jobber. I shouldn't be surprised to see you here. Gavin the Hawk. Loaned out to keep an eye on the serving staff as likely the most capable steward in the city." Cass placed his hands on the older man's shoulders in an attempt to insure that the man kept his balance. It would never do to be knocking people about on the floor.

Cass nearly beamed at the elderly servant as he continued. "Be sure to keep Doric from sampling too much of the brandy. His flushed face gives him away every time. And if Vatryna gets caught flirting with another noble's young son, they will run her out of town in a barrel."

Cass reached into the pocket of his waistcoat and recovered a pair of gold coins that he slipped into Gavin's own pocket before the man could protest. "Here's a little something else for your war chest. No arguing now. It's nothing more than a meal or two or a cup of hot cider on a cold day. Nothing more than you've given me at many a kitchen table in my youth. Run along now before I get misty eyed. The divine drunk's own luck be with you always."

Cass really was in need of that drink by now. So he hurried off to find it before he engaged with anyone else in attendance, no matter in which capacity.

The Grand Ball

Cyrus and Valoria had taken the first carriage as well and were happy to be among the "early arrivals." Cyrus was dressed in the same military style outfit that he'd worn at his wedding, though it seemed to have a bit more adornment and finery. As he was learning, the dignity was in the details.

As Cyrus surveyed the room two faces in particular stuck out to him as surprising, the first because of the context and the second because he hadn't anticipated such an opportunity.

Cyrus parted with Valoria saying, "I would like to go speak with a few people I recognize from town, I do hope you don't mind."

Making his way toward the first face he'd recognized he smiled at the older dwarf who had helped him with the barding and said, "Had I known I was dealing with Darain al Gorka himself, I might have held my tongue a bit more. I must say the work is of the finest quality and both times I've ridden Rough-heart in the barding, he's seemed more than content and not in the least bit inhibited by the weight or fit. Your men and their work are of the highest quality. Gandred, the one who helped me the most, he's top notch."

The Grand Ball

As Cass circulates he sees one of the serving men that he knows and stops to speak with the man.  ”Good to see you are doing well for yourself, young Cass.” the serving man says trough a fixed smile.  Offering his tray he asks, ”Canape, sir?  It is smoked fish from the southlands, encased in a light pastry case …”.  With  a polite nod, Gavin continues on his way offering canapes to those who might be interested.  Cass can’t quite be sure if the older man  is maintaining the servant/noble relationship to protect his own job -  after all it wouldn’t be good for a servant to be caught consorting with a noble guest whilst on duty.  Or perhaps Gavin was worried that he might blow Cass’s cover ...

There are plenty of servants circulating with trays of glasses, probably some sort of wine or another.  However, there is a full buffet table and bar in the council chamber next door.

Further around the ballroom, Cyrus approaches the Dwarf he had been dealing with earlier, finally realising that this was Darain al Gorka council member and renowned smith.  ”I am glad you find the barding acceptable, the lads put a lot of work into it.  I always say that a good armour should fit like a glove.  No chafing.” He pauses for a moment and clears his throat.  He is a bit more formal, next time he speaks.  ”It is fitting that you noticed young Gandred.  Since he met you and Miss Zauria he has been  talking about heading south to seek his fortunes.  Not as a warrior you understand, but as a smith.  I have forbidden it, of course. he pauses for a moment, then adds shrewdly.  However, I am not sure that he will listen to me for long. Therefore, sir, I have a favour to ask of you.  If I release Gandred from his apprenticeship papers and send him south, will you keep an eye on him for me?”

Cyrus was surprised at the request, but gathered his wits about him quickly and said, "Ah, perhaps I raved too much about the grandeur of the land... That said, it would be an honor, sir. I've been entrusted with establishing a new settlement in on the grounds of a former outpost. A quality smith like Gandred would make that work far easier, assuming you release him from his apprenticeship."

He paused and said, "He would be most welcome, especially knowing he was trained by you."

With a nod to Cyrus, he prepares to take his leave - allowing the young noble to continue with his tour  of the ball room.

He bowed in respect to the dwarf and then parted ways with him with a big grin on his face. A grin he pushed down as he approached the second person he'd recognized.

Approaching the First Swordlord,  Jamandi Aldori, Cyrus bowed once again and said, "Your friend, Sir Ferdinand Ledkno, has spoken highly of you in the times we have met. It is truly an honor to make your acquaintance. I do hope my wife and our fellow officers of Midmarch have stories to share like you and Sir Ledkno."

After the appropriate form of greeting given their respective ranks within the church he quietly asks, "Madame Banker, would you be able to tell me whether there are any other Abadaran priests assisting Baron Drelev, Sir Reginald Porter or Maeger Varn with settling their chartered areas in the Stolen Lands? If there are any more of our priests in those areas I expect that make it a lot easier to set up commerce and trade between our settlements in future. Or anyone else with any ties to the Temple of Abadar?"

Marik stepped out of the carriage Henry had provided for their use. He'd waited to take the carriage on it's second trip, allowing those of more stature than him to arrive first. He was wearing the same brightly colored courtier's outfit he'd worn at the wedding a few nights earlier, adorned with the magical bracers he'd acquired in their most recent adventure.

He took a moment to take in the scene before turning back to the carriage and offering his hand to the half-orc woman that was sitting inside. "Well, this should be fun," he said to Mariam as he helped her out of the carriage.

An olive green hand with well trimmed nails took his. Stepping out of the carriage, Mariam made sure to hunch her back so her head didn't hit the door frame. She was wearing a long cotton skirt and a white blouse as was the formal wear of her people. For the first time since she'd arrived in Restov she had her hair down, the long curly chestnut hair had taken hours to tame. "I'm sure it will be quite entertaining. You certainly look dashing as usual" her face turned red realizing what she'd just said.

A couple of the musicians nod  back as Adoven waves to them but, very professionally, they don’t break off from their playing.  When Vik and Adoven reach Gibbs and his party, and Adoven makes the introductions, Gibbs reponds on behalf of all of them, ”Pleased to meet you, madam. The fame of the Lodkova reach even this far south.  I trust you are doing well in your venture in our neighbouring lands?  Adoven has certainly turned the heads of some of my other students with his tales of derring-do in the wilderness.”  The students all bow slightly, although somewhat stiffly as if they are still learning the etiquette of great balls like this.

Andalon mingles, smiling and nodding to people as appropriate, until he sees a pair of the other guests move on from chatting with The Banker, and he slides in before anyone else can corner her.  After listening to his question she responds pensively.  ”I don’t believe so.  I know that Maegar  is great friends with Caspar, who is dedicated to Ersatil, and I believe that Sir Reginald has a Gorumite chaplain, but I don’t know all that much about Baron Drelev.  He comes from New Stetven and I haven’t met him before.”

Marik and Mariam arrive together, one or two people turn to see who has been announced with such unusually linked names.  No one says anything although a couple turn to comment quietly to the people they are talking with.

The First Swordlord nods as Ferdinand provides the information that helps her place Cyrus properly, the responds.  ”Congratulations on your recent marriage, I hope you and your bride are very happy together.   With the strength and wiliness of the Lebeda at your side, I am sure that you will soon have lots of fascinating adventures and stories to tell.”

Cass approaches the halflings, guessing from the man’s name that he is a merchant of some sort.  Introductions are exchanged and they introduce themselves as Fosco Marchant, and his wife Xandry.  Fosco responds on their behalf, while Xandy watches Cass carefully.

”Pleased to meet you Cassius.  Xandry and I have a small mule train that works locally, although we would be pleased to explore the possibilities of working in your new land.  Tell me, have you come across many Halflings wandering about down there?”
--
As Andalon approaches Baron Drelev and his delegation, Lady Drelev sniffs and starts walking away stroking and muttering something about ‘nice people’ to her little dog.  Both the Baron and her brother, the mage, follow her as she heads off to talk to someone important.  Lord Numesti grins and shrugs, then follows along behind.  However, his two daughters stay behind to chat for a while.

Kisandra, the younger of the two, is somewhat athletic and is dress in the modern style, while Tamary (the older sibling)  is more attractive and looks less athletic and wears a very becoming ball gown, that is (perhaps) cut just a touch lower that appropriate.  Kisandra is quite matter of fact and dismissive of Drelev’s attempts to build a settlement, while Tamary has a frequent smile and is much more upbeat about everything.  In the end it is Tamary who provides the information Andalon seeks.

”There has been some talk of a church, and I think the baron has been speaking to a Bishop of Erastil.  But they haven’t started building a church yet …” Kisanda doesn’t seem impressed.

"I do hope that there will be good relations between our settlement and that of Lord Drelev. There are so many advantages on both sides if good trade relations can be established, not to mention the benefits of being able to visit and socialise with each other. We already have a priest of Erastil among Henry LeMaistre's people, so perhaps there will be an opportunity there in future. However, I must admit that I am a little confused by Lady Drelev's reaction when I approached. I am not sure whether it is my association with Henry LeMaistre, the temple of Abadar, my Lebeda heritage or something else that made her turn away. I hope that is not an omen of ill feeling between the LeMaistre and Drelev settlements in future. Is there something there that I should know about?" he asked them.

The Grand Ball

Pipre had spent the intervening time ingratiating herself in society, finding herself in all sorts of shopping trips, sitting in boudoirs, attending gatherings for tea, and in private carriages calling on back entrances to private establishments. Those who may have spotted her could probably sense a sort of purpose driving her. Seeking out the inner lives of these high society matrons and daughters, sons and patriarchs, looking for the deviant, the decadent, the exploratory urges that ride under the current of genteel sensibility, quickly gaining a reputation as an enabler, especially among the young women her age, her plans clever enough to evade chaperones or other watchful eyes, daring enough to titillate.

She arrives in the company of one or more of these young ladies, her hair sleek and shining against the well tailored, very short coat and a inky black gown that follows her slim-to-curvy figure with a decolletage draped with silver chains and pale, fragrant skin in a window down past her sternum and a back open to the dimples of the sensually curved small of her back. She wears a small, black brimmed fancy hat pinned to her hair with long red feathers curving back and away from her head, highlighting the side of her head that has been trimmed more neatly close to her scalp and an ear pierced with bulky, ornate rings and loops- the side of her head with the cut-short eyebrow.

She seems to have really taken ownership and made a statement over the unusual features-- the small eyebrow and the missing hair on the side of her head, that her first loves, alchemy and explosions, have given her.

As she walks in, long legs sometimes emerging from the waterfall of thin, ink black fabric to show pale skin and silver heeled black leather pumps, she waves ring heavy hands and smiles plum-dark, glossy lips at other members of the Midmarch party.

Jamandi smiles at Cyrus’s attempts to finagle a Sword School out of her, ”I think your cousin might have something to say about that.” she says nodding towards Swordlord Lebeda-Berain, and reminding Cyrus of one of the responsibilities that come with his change of name.  ”It was nice meeting you.” she says after a couple of moment, ”And I hope things go well for you in both your new marriage and you projects in Midmarch -  But, if you will excuse me, I need to have a word with Baron Drelev.”

”Pop out to the stables before you leave town, I’ll ask Velia to give you a few pointers.” Ferdinand responds, but his eyes follow Jamandi, and he quickly excuses himself to stand b her side while she talks to Drelev.

--

Fosco frowns slightly when Cass says he is unaware of any halflings who might have been travelling through their new lands, but quickly returns to his smiling self -  but then it is always difficult to read the moods of a businessman when they are working.  Later, when Cass speaks of looking for a business manager, Fosco’s eyes light up.  Although he glances across and gets a slight nod from Xandry, before he responds ”As it happens I know a youngster, recently come to us from further south, who is looking for just such an opportunity.  While I have taught Elkin the basics of running a business, I understand that he has some experience of the hospitality industry previously.  He can certainly cook a decent meal.”

With another glance across to Xandry, Fosco smiles and rubs his stomach - as if in satisfaction of a meal prepared by Elkin.

--

”You aren’t important enough.” Kisandra responds dryly.  ”Oh, stop it Kissy.  You know father said we should support the Baron … “ Tamary pulls out a fan and starts fanning herself lightly, flirtingly  glancing at Andalon from behind it.  ”And I am sure the Baron has the best interests of all of us in mind as he plans …” Tamary’s  eyelids lower for a moment, showing Andalon thick, lush lashes before she lowers the fan and smiles.

Kisandra just raises her eyebrows. Sisterly love at its best.

--

As Andalon and Vik speak with Gibbs and his students, Mia suddenly excuses herself and  makes her way across towards Bai and Henry.

--

Mariam’s awkwardness lasts but a moment or two, before Pipre makes her grand entrance – then she and Marik are able to move further inside, away from the doorway, without any attention.

As always, when a new guest is announced, people glance avross to see who has arrived, how they are dressed and who they are with.  In Pipre’s case, many look for a second, or even a third, glance before they turn back to talk to their companions.  Many glance at Pipre and her companion again  as they say something to the people they are with.  A few manage to behave with a bit more decorum.

"Indeed, I will speak with my cousin. It was truly a pleasure to meet you." He said bowing to the First Swordlord.

Cyrus nodded to Sir Ferdinand indicating he understood and would make his way to the stables long before they set out to Midmarch as he knew he had much to learn still about mounted combat. He was curious as to what demanded both of their attentions but left it alone for now.

He returns to Valoria's side and says, "Well that was interesting. I just met the First Swordlord and she implied your cousin would be the person to seek out when, or if, we decide we'll need a proper sword school in Ringbridge. I also have just been informed we'll have a talented young smith joining us when we set out for Midmarch. He'll come in very handy as we establish our home." He squeezed her hand and then said, "In case I didn't mention it enough on the way, you shine as bright as all the stars in the night sky, and never moreso than tonight. Have you had any interesting conversations or is there someone you'd like to speak with?"

Andalon smiles and chuckles aloud at Kisandra's explanation, which would have shattered any illusions about his own importance if he actually had any.

"I think perhaps I am rather fortunate that I am not important enough to say hello to a baron and baroness when the two daughters of Lord Numesti are much more pleasant company! Perhaps it is at our level that we can establish the foundations of good relations between our settlements in future. Would you like to come and meet some of my other friends from Henry LeMaistre's group? Over there are my cousin Valoria and my colleague Cyrus Ondari who were married just this week. Adoven and Viktoria over there are fascinated by Mr Gibbs's sword school, then there is Mariam who is a paladin and, well, quite a few other of my colleagues are here as well. I am sure you would be fascinated by some of the stories they can tell already."

Then he bows gently to Tamary in particular and asks, "Tamary, would you do me the honour of dancing with me later when the musicians begin to play?"

Cass noted that Xandry Marchant seemed a bit wary of him, so he endeavored to keep his body language reassuring and almost servile.

"That is splendid!" Cass responded to Fosco Marchant. "Fine food is definitely welcomed among all, of every diversity. It is also an excellent way to uplift the morale of the workers. Although, to be honest, it is the comfort and pleasure of my own stomach that lingers strongest in my mind."

Cass wet his lips with the wine then lowered the glass. "I do hope you will describe the offer to Elkin once it proves convenient. I further hope that he takes an interest in the offer and decides to make an attempt of it. I will see that he is more than fairly compensated and as well cared for as can be accommodated."

He can't help but notice Pipre as she walks in, clearly doing her best to attract as much attention as possible, and succeeding. However his gaze continues to wander until he notices master Harbin, and more importantly, his assistant.

After he takes a sip of his wine, he turns to Mariam, "If you don't mind, I see someone I need to speak with privately. I promise I will not leave you for long," he adds with a soft smile.

He then asks for another glass of wine walks towards Harbin. "Master Harbin, it is good to see you. Thank you for the excellent craftsmanship in this suit. I have received many compliments." His eyes momentarily flicker to the tailor's beautiful assistant before returning back to him. "I wander if I might have a moment of your assistant's time? A trifle question that I would hate to bother you with."

Cyrus concludes his conversation  with Sir Ferdinand and the First Sword Lord and makes his way back to Valoria.

--

Andalon engages the young ladies in conversation, offers to introduce them to his friends -  but then suggests Tamary might like to dance.  Tamary almost simpers as she flutters her fan seductively and promptly links her arm through Andalon’s.  Kisandra smiles, as if she has seen it all before. After all Tamary is the pretty one.

”You two go and dance.” she says, smiling.  ”I am going to get a proper drink,.  and you can almost hear the Now father is over there .. in her voice.  With a nod towards the pair of you, she makes her way into the other room.  Just as the musicians start up another tune …

--

Xandry smiles thinly as Cass confirms his offer of employment for Elkin and nods again.  ”I will be pleased to pass your offer on, and to recommend it wholeheartedly.  I am sure he will be ready to leave whenever you are.” Fosco responds enthusiastically – perhaps too enthusiastically.

--

Marik gets Mariam a drink and then makes his way across to Harbin the tailor.  A few moments later he is talking quietly to the tailor’s beautiful half-elven assistant – alone.

"As much as I enjoy your company and value your insight, I fear that others would frown upon me monopolizing your time. So I will allow others to enjoy your company and withdraw myself. I will still be in attendance through much of the night. If you find yourself free and wish to speak some more, please, do feel free to engage me."

When I return to Midmarch, I intend to establish a business venture, a trade network. Tamary is light on her feet and dances well, carefully she ‘leads’ the dance until Andalon is more confident – and eventually even able to hold a conversation as he dances.  Tamary is certainly at home on the dancefloor, and in maintaining a conversation – in between comments about the music, décor, and a couple of people sitting at the side, Andalon discovers

”Oh.  Kissy and I will certainly be moving in with our father.  Without us, he will have no one to look after him ...  Mother passed on some time ago and now we run his home ...  I am sure there will be lots of other girls there to help me practice my dancing and fine needlework …  Kissy is looking forward to riding more and getting to explore ….”
But she intersperses those with some questions of her own.

”It must be exciting for a man of action, like you, going exploring … So what are your plans in the new land.  Apart from building a church, I mean, all you priests want to build a church …

--
Cyrus and Val link arms and walk across to the Lebeda-Berains, where they are invited to sit and servants are waved at to bring plates of nibbles and new drinks.  “So how is married like, dear?”  lady Lebeda-berain asks the new bride?

--

The Honourable Thonat Letson, owner of half or Riverside, Councillor and Patron of the Bank of Free Restov turns to Marik and asks, ”You haven’t got my niece in the family way have you?”.  Sir Ferdinand grins and turns to speak to someone else, leaving Thonat and Marik alone …

If you were to offer dancing lessons out there I suspect the line of men wanting dancing lessons would stretch right out the door. If I lived there I think I would be right there at the front on the queue! Your sister will certainly have plenty of opportunity to ride and explore there.

"As for me, yes of course I do plan to build a church in Henry LeMaistre's new settlement but in these early days I shall take every opportunity to get out and explore the surrounding area while I can. Who knows, perhaps there is a hidden treasure trove out there or long-forgotten ruins to explore and discover their secrets? When I was a boy in New Stetven I often dreamt of becoming one of the Balanced Scales of Katapesh, travelling the world, exploring mysterious places and finding lost treasures and ancient artifacts.

He accidentally blended in with the shadows of the early evening and forgot to reveal himself to her when she’d arrived... It wasn’t until she’d said his name that he realized he was still hiding and then he felt ashamed. He took a deep breath and then emerged from the shadows and said, "Here I am. Again she flushes a delicate pink, and her eyelids flutter, "And perhaps we will be able to dance again when you do visit.  There aren't all that men nice men to dance with ...."

The Grand Ball

Adoven speaks to Gibbs' students, saying  "Robert, what are your plans after you've completed your studies here? Gibbs, how would you rate Robert here among the budding Swordlords of Restov?"

Robert shrugs, and looks a bit uncomfortable in his second hand courtier's outfit "Go back to the farm, I suppose ..."

However, Gibbs eyes wrinkle in a smile as he responds "Robert has some potential.  He is one of my better and students," he looks across apologetically at his other students, "He needs more practice of course, but with that he will be a competent duelist and warrior, if he chooses to be.  He has trained with  the Falcata as well as the Rapier, so he can choose between styles when he takes to the dueling table. Now it just comes down to practice and opportunity."

Andalon smiled at Tamary again.

"Yes, of course I will write to you. I suppose our letters will have to come through Restov until there is a regular trade route or messenger service established between Fort Drelev and Henry's settlement. No matter. I'll find out how to get a letter to Fort Drelev before I leave. But right now I hope you are still happy to keep dancing with me? Nothing would please me more."

OOC: I can't remember what names Henry has in mind for the new settlements at Fort Stag and the Orcy Ring.

And, if someone wants to send a letter to Fort Drelev, is there a person or agency in Restov that it can be delivered to? The same question applies in relation to sending a letter to either of Henry's settlements or Oleg's trading post. Is that something that would already be coordinated by the Restov merchants' guild, perhaps?

In reply to Valoria Lebeda-Ondari (msg # 59):

Nodding she took Valoria's offer. At the mention of books she lit up "That would be delightful, it's so hard to find a good read in Restov, lovely as it is. If only it had a library" she lamented.

In reply to DM (msg # 64):

Adoven smiles. "Tell me Robert, have you ever been at sea? Both Lady Vik and I have spent time working for her family aboard various merchant ships, and we both had plenty of practice against marauders and river pirates. But if that does not appeal, perhaps you can return to the new city with us. I was hoping to spread knowledge of these dueling techniques to those on the frontier who will need to know how to fight competently to defend us out there in the wild and unexplored areas. I never thought of myself as a good teacher, but I do have an eye for spotting talent. If we created a school out there, we'd need an instructor, and I think you might fit the bill. Of course, like Gibbs says, you'll need experience and practice. Those are in good supply on the frontier, and you'll live better than you might on the farm."

The Grand Ball

Andalon and Tamary continue to dance together for the evening and then work out that they can send letters via Restov - although the message is then sent on by road to New Stetven and finally by boat to Fort Drelev.

Mariam chats about books with the Lebeda clan and everyone establishes where everyone else sits on the scale of Brevoy Nobility.

Robert accepts Adoven's offer to travel with him and gain experience as a squire before moving into a role running a sword school.
