Early the next morning, Cyrus rose and donned his armor. Grabbing his shield and the wooden weapons he'd bought in dwarf town after his conversation with Zauria, he made his way to the sparring ring he'd asked her to meet him in the previous afternoon.

There, he set down the heavy, long wooden great sword and spent a few minutes acclimating to the wooden longsword he'd chosen for himself. The pommel felt slick and he worried about it sliding out of his hands and made a mental note to add some texture to the pommel for use in the future.

He moved through his practice forms, reliving past battles and considering new ways to use his sword and shield together. He wondered if a visit to the sword schools wouldn't be of more value than he'd originally considered, but that was to come later in the week. Instead he focused on training his own body prior to the arrival of Zauria for her own training.

<quote Zauria de lin Lebeda>
Zauria woke up early and got herself ready. She tried to make herself look a little more presentable, it was her first training session with the knight she would serve for the foreseeable future. Making her way to the  sparring ring, she was surprised to see Sir Cyrus already there and training. It would seem that he won the early morning advantage of warm ups.

Seeing his shield, Zauria smiled. “I see you have a shield. Perhaps, I should also have a shield. Custodi!” The form of a kite shield came forth, but fizzled out almost as fast as it had appeared. “That's also what I am training to overcome. I need to learn to cast in armor...No matter.” Taking hold of the training sword when offered, Zauria warmed up with a few flurries and sword movements. “Shall we?”

Cyrus had prepared himself to be amazed at her ability to cast spells but was rather unprepared for her failure. "Wearing armor can be a distraction. Perhaps we should have you pay a visit to Gandred and the others in dwarftown to make sure your's fits. I'd hate to have you chafe." He joked harkening back to the gruff older dwarf's comments about the barding for their horses.

"Fighting in armor is difficult, you should wear yours whenever you can, get used to it's weight, it's fit, it's mobility, the sounds it makes when you bend or pivot. It should feel like a second skin. Then perhaps your spells won't be bothered."

He picked up the wooden version of the big sword she favored and tossed it to her, "With a blade of that size, you won't be able to use a shield or have the protection a shield might afford you, so getting that spell right will become more and more important. But for now, let's work on making sure that your enemies don't get a chance to make you pay for a mistake like that."

He picked back up his own wooden sword and lightly tapped his shield as his feet spread and he readied himself for an assault, "Come at me, show me what skills you have learned, that way I can know what I can truly teach you."

OOC: Cyrus will spend a few rounds defense mode, his shield at the ready, set for whatever combat actions you might bring against him. AC = 22. I could do total defense, but I want there to be a chance for you to hit him :)

Zauria listened to Cyrus's words as she continued her warm up exercises and form moments. She didn't like it, but he was right about the spell failure being a mistake, a lethal one in the wrong place and time. As she heard the light tapping of his wooden sword on shield, Zauria came at Cyrus in an aggressive flurry. “As you wish, Sir.” One swing flowing into the next as her claymore spins around Cyrus's guard, almost breaking through. If Zauria had been using her real claymore, her attack might have worked. Yet this practice was not yet over.

Cyrus hadn’t expected the prowess Zauria displayed and after ducking the first overhead swing, he deflected the two follow up blows with his shield. He backed up a few steps and then with a smile he hit his shield with his wooden sword, "Good form! Again."

Zauria returned the smile and again spun around, swinging her wooden claymore wildly. She hoped to catch him off guard by the maneuver, but the shield of Cyrus seemed to be everywhere her wooden sword landed. She tried to ready her, just in case he decided to counter attack.

Cyrus let Zauria come at him a few more times before finally changing his approach. Having blocked her last blow, he slipped in her longer reach and slashed his sword across her left arm. Were they wielding real blades, he would have drawn blood, but with the sparrring weapons, she would only have an ugly bruise.

"Hold," He said, "How else do you plan on using your spells. With Enlarge Person, for example, it would be a bit easier to keep me at bay with your longer reach. Are there other enchantments you plan on using?"

Zauria winced as Cyrus gave her a nice mark across the arm. Hearing his words, she lifted an eyebrow. “Well, if you insist.” Throw a few quick blows with her wooden sword to cover her retreat, Zauria took a five foot step back and spoke the words of her spell. “Crescere Magnus.” This time her spell did not fail. Growing to double her normal size, she towered over Cyrus with her giant wooden sword. "I have other tricks in my wizard's bag of course. Do you wish to see them all?"

OOC: Casting enlarge person on self.

Cyrus smiled at the success of her spell and said, "Good, well perhaps your activity has enlivened the blood and released the magic! I'd like to know what other tricks you intend to use in combat, as there are times where being large will be a disadvantage. That can wait, though.  For now let's be sure to maximize the time you are large." He tapped his shield lightly as he crouched and readied for another assault this time from an even larger blade.

Zauria smiled as she looked down at the now smaller Cyrus. She continued talking as she began trying to hack down his defenses, all the while trying to keep him ten feet back. “Well, I have a sleep spell that could put a group of warriors to sleep. A true strike spell that gives me sight beyond sight for an almost guaranteed hit.” Zauria then hit Cyrus's shield, hard, almost knocking it aside. “I can summon a cone of searing flame that shoots from my hands, lighting many ablaze. I can also shoot magic missiles, at will, almost unlimited.” Zauria then throw a powerful thrust towards Cyrus, again almost breaking through his guard.

Cyrus only nods as Zauria lists off her spells. He is surprised by a few of them and knows that they will come in very handy. The versatility Zauria has will be invaluable on the battlefield but he isn't quite ready to share that with her just yet.

Cyrus smiled at Zauria's giant form and backed up a step, knowing he was still well within her reach. "So that's what it feels like to be on the other side of that spell..." he said and smiled a bit.

He deftly blocks the chop she delivers and says, "Better, much better. Your defenses are lowered in this form, though clearly you are stronger and have the advantage of reach. I hate to waste that spell, so come at me one more time and then we'll move on to another activity." He taps his shield with his sword one more time, signaling for her to advance.

Cyrus withdrew after the last assault saying, "Good show Zauria! We have yet to face a foe as heavily armored as I am, though I am sure that is bound to change." He knew he was lucky she hadn't connected on those last few blows and he was happy she hadn't as his shield arm would have bruises as it is, much less if she'd actually broken through his defenses.

"On the battlefield, things are a bit different than in the sparring pit. A bit more chaotic. We have to stick together and know each other's strengths and weaknesses and play to those. Vik is fast and strikes out at close range. Percy is similar, though he finds ways to flank the enemy and give him additional advantage. Andalon, your cousin, he stands near the front with me and when he's not healing us all, he packs a mean punch with the morningstar. I try to keep Valoria to the rear, it makes it easier for her to cast spells and wreak havoc among the masses." He pauses, smiles and says, "And it keeps her a bit safer too, but safety is an illusion that we can't truly afford."

He stops and says, "I'd say this was a great first lesson. We'll do this again tomorrow and the day after and so on. Now come, we should go to the stables and see to our horses. Perhaps we will run into Lady Vella and can spend some time riding with her, she's a member of the Order of the Dragon as well."

Zauria smiles as she sinks back down to size and puts away her wooden training sword. A smile hangs on her lips. “I always veiwed Andalon as just another priest and banker of the family. It is good to know he can fight as well.” Looking up at the knight, Zauria was more than interested to continue her learning. “Do you ride well? I mean, do you ride as well as you fight? I think Thunderstruck may be a bit more than a match for your Rough-heart...my Lord” Zauria wore a playful smile as they walked to the stables.

Cyrus smiled at the question. "I am still learning the tricks of the trade, but Rough-heart is exceptionally well-trained and we have bonded greatly over our short time. He was a gift from Sir Ferdinand Ledkno, my sponsor in the Order of the Dragon and a prominent visitor to MidMarch on occasion. I take it you have spent some time training in the saddle?"

OOC: Don't forget Cyrus is a Cavalier now, so Rough-heart is more than your combat-trained Warhorse :)

Stepping out into the training yard, Gehron walks up and down looking at the training weapons available.

Picking up a wooden greatsword, he gives it a couple of swings to get a feel for it. "That'll do."

Walking over to Kendric he sees that he has taken off his armour. "If you don't want to wear armour, that's your choice. But I want to practice used to what I'll be doing, and I'll be out in something. Upside with chain, can sleep in it and still get a good night's rest. So if you want to leave it off that's your choice, but even made of wood I imagine this will hurt. For me, the bigger the weapon the better. Rather take whatever is in front of me hard, then need a shield for it to swing back." He pats what would be the blade of sword.

"Ready when you are." He says, bracing himself with the sword upright.
