Fuzzy:  General Midmarch Development

This thread is intended for people who are interested in building in  Lands under Henry's control.
This includes the Northern Narlemarch area that Rook and Aris manage the area on a day-to-day basis - Henry leMaistre has the final say in any building decisions.

Henry has a master plan for the Northern Narlemarch.  Rook lives at Elkwall, an ancient shrine to Erastil.  Aris'ta commands the local troops from the old bandit camp.  henry does not intend to allow this area to be heavily developed.

  • The Fey hex with stay as a 'reserve, and have restricted access.
  • The forest hexes will stay as wilderness, although you might be allowed to build a wilderness home if that takes your fancy.
  • A road will run through the Hill hexes, eventually, and they will be open to rural development.

Henry intends to build roads that link Oleg's with Ringbridge and 'Fort Stag'.  Although the latter part of that route might well be conducted along the river.

As the plans for development become clear, Henry approaches Andalon.  "I understand that you might be prepared to help Midmarch out?  As Governor, I have been looking at the way developments might go and planning roads.  Percy and Jicca have ceded their claims, while Zorah, Bai and Tib have deferred their claims for the time being.  If you have no other immediate plans, could I prevail on you to do the same?

I need one more work crew to build a section of road that will complete the initial loop and help us claim all of the land up to the Brevoy Borders."
he looks slightly embarrassed for a moment, "If I  defer my personal claim, we will still be short of a watch tower.  And, in all honesty, I would like to claim the area for  myself and seal it by building the tower personally."

OOC: I am separating Henry's claim from the State ....  Just in case any of you attempt to over throw him later.

"This is my plan ..." Henry says as he unrolls a map on the table.

See the map for group 0

  • The  difficult to see brown lines are roads.
  • The thin yellow lines are trails.
  • The Outpost is owned by Midmarch and protects the area right the way up to the road.
  • The Tower belongs to Henry personally, and he has claimed that Hex as part of his personal estate.

"Oh, I see," said Andalon as he looked at the map. "The road from Tusk Town will run parallel to the Shrike River to Ringbridge, then continue northeast to meet the South Brevoy Road leading to Restov. Then a second road branching off north of Ringbridge towards Oleg's trading post. That will certainly make Ringbridge quite an important centre for trade in future. Those roads will provide excellent routes from Tusk Town to Restov and presumably to New Stetven and Fort Drelev as well, assuming Baron Drelev makes the East Sellen River safe for travel north of Lake Hooktongue to New Stetven. The road link from Ringbridge to the South Brevoy Road, combined with the navigable section of the Shrike River south from Ringbridge, will provide a very good new trade route between Restov and Mivon too.

"Yes, I would certainly be more than willing to help you build those roads,"
he replied.

"Thank you," replies glad that Andalon has realized his intent, "And with the Outpost and Tower we will be able to patrol the roads and keep the merchants safe.

The soldiers in the Keep at Tusktown, the Narlemarch  Camp, the Outpost and Oleg's will all wear the colors of Midmarch, those in the tower will wear my personal colours, and Cyrus has yet to decide what color his troops will wear.  I have asked Borric to oversee the troops on my behalf and to advise me about the attitudes of our settlers.  Rikka, who started lout as a farmer's daughter, has agreed to advise the farmers and countrymen on their business opportunities and taxes. - as well as setting up her own smithy in Tusk Town."

The management council for Midmarch will be:

Henry - Governor  (Leader)
Borric - Chief Magistrate  (Advocate)
Rikka - Chancellor

In his capacity as Governor, Henry has built a monument to commemorate the Battle of Oleg's -  the first encounter with the Staglord's men.  A new watchtower has been built and one of the towers in Oleg's Road house has been converted into a shop selling locally sourced goods and general merchandise.

NEW KINGDOM ROUND

Henry looks around the room and speaks somewhat curtly,  "I have decided to deal with all development applications for Oleg's, Henryhall, Outpost and any other areas that fall under  my jurisdiction in this one meeting.

Both Oleg's and Henryhall are open for development, and I intend for both of them to grow into small towns to support northern Midmarch.  They are open to most forms of development.

Outpost, and the surrounding areas will be given over to farming and other rural pursuits as  we work to ensure food security for the people of Midmarch.  The northern Narlemarch, surrounding the Fey Home continue to develop as a nature reserve, as I promised earlier.  So any proposals for that area must be sympathetic to those needs.

However, I am prepared to hear a much wider range proposals for any other area of Midmarch.

Zelona listened carefully as Henry spoke, and then she walked over and took Oleg by the sleeve into a corner for discussion. Then ranged back and forth for a time though always low voiced. Finally, they both smiled and shook hands. She came back to the rest of the meeting with him and waited on him to speak with Henry.

Fuzzy:  General Midmarch Development

After a moment’s thought, Henry stands and clears his throat.  ”I have an announcement to make.

After careful consideration of my Charter Duties to protect the southern border of Brevoy, I have decided on a slightly different strategy for Midmarch.  From now on, I am going to concentrate my efforts on establishing a new ‘South Road, that runs from Varnhold, east across Midmarch until it reaches the East Sellen river.  From there we will be able to forge trading routes with New Stetven, Drelev and beyond into Pitax. That will complement the other trading routes that we have established to Restov and Mivon – although there is no reason why they can’t be developed further.

To this end, I will not be sending any more expiratory groups south of tusk.  Come springtime, I will send trade envoys east to Varhnold, and send a group to explore the area west of Oleg’s.  A third group will continue our work in the Narlemach, after all we don’t want any more surprises such as groups of Gnome eating Kobolds on our borders.

That doesn’t mean that any of you are banned from  working in the southern hills, just that my focus will be elsewhere.”

With that, he sits down and surveys the room, looking at the expressions on people’s faces.

"At the moment, I'm hoping to merely establish a village at the waterfall, from there it should be possible to move cargo to and from Restov on the river. I do have some thoughts on doing the same further downstream, under the cascade, and some day build the canals needed to to make Shrike fully navigable. But all that is in a distant future." Safiya replies to Kendrick, trying to keep her voice down as to not to prove a distraction at the meeting. Zelona looked to Marik and Lord Henry, "my Lord, I want to make sure as we talk of establishing mining within the Narlmarch we also consider our goal of keeping the Narlmarch as a nature preserve. Mining is a dangerous proposition to the surrounding lands. I also worry how the Fey in the Narlmarch may take such endeavors."

She smiled at Marik, "I am not arguing against your effort, only that we ensure whatever you build there impacts the forest the least so we don't encounter other ramifications down the road, but also keep with the Lord's stated goal of keeping the Narlmarch as a natural reserve for Midmarch."

"It is certainly my intention to retain the northern portion of the Narlemarch as a Nature Reserve, free from  intrusive developments of all sorts, which is why it is under the protection of both Erastil and the  Green Faith.  However, as we move further south, we will have to work within the forest.  We need wood for our buildings and fires, Oak bark for tanning and, I suspect, other items that can only be found in the forests.  I would rather that was done by people who live in forest villages and towns rather than logging syndicates or 'Town' businesses."

He shrugs his shoulders slightly.  "There must always be compromises ..."

Last season we secured the area, clearing out the last traces of the kobolds and established an outpost to maintain security. With the snow thawing, we are prepared to continue with our plans. This season I will be expanding the outpost to a fortified villa to allow my mining foreman, Valgard Bouldershoulder, to have a place to live and work out of, and we will build out the entrance of the mine and begin operations there.
