OOC -  Kingdom Building Thread

Ladies and Gentlemen .....

Today we enter the building phase of the game - every PC (primary or Secondary) who has taken part in adventuring so far  gets 1 BP to spend according to these rules ....  http://rp.baileymail.net/doku....mpaign_systems:start

Most of you have seen the rules before -  I am happy to give you as much Guidance/Advice  as you want or need.  That is what this thread is for :)

Just remember -  who ever is running the stronghold need to maintain a balance between Economy, Loyalty and Stability.

I've only been involved in social events so far. Does Adoven still have a BP to spend? And a quick perusal of those rules show me how to EARN BP, not how to spend it. Is there a different rule set for that?

Adoven the Character has been involved previously - although you (the current player) hasn't.

Spending BPs is easy.  Each section has a list of Building Developments -  for each BP you have,  you can develop buildings  worth 1000gp or less.  (any excess is lost and passed to the host settlement to develop social buildings)

You have to get permission from  whoever controls the area before you build there though.  Sometimes they might charge you a BP or  more for the privilege of building in their settlement.  However that is only likely if you want to build something with a high economy and low Loyalty / Stability.   The Stronghold owners have to keep Economy, Loyalty and Stability in balance - or else bad things start to happen in town :)

It is the start of this phase -  so people have enough for one small business.  But there will be more BPs later and people will be able to grow and develop they holdings.

If anyone does not want to spend the BP now -  Henry will use it now and you can claim it back later.

Others are welcome to build in Ringbridge but I do think the goal would be to build up the Fort Stag area at least initially.

Percy will cede his 1BP to Henry too.  While a magnificent trading empire would be nice, that requires suppliers, supplies and customers so building up the infrastructure/population at this end of the chain would be a smart business move.  :>

I intend to build either a Tannery or a Craft Workshop in the capitol city.

I am looking at the progression of religious buildings.

eg. Shrine (600gp) -> Chapel (1600gp) -> Temple (4900gp) -> Minster (8700gp) -> Cathedral (13700gp)

Presumably there would be similar progressions in other types of infrastructure.

Can you start at the smallest one and progressively develop it? Is the cost to upgrade from one to the next just the difference in costs or is there some penalty involved?

I suppose if we are using build points (1BP = 1000gp) and lose the loose change each time that would be the penalty for progressive upgrading.

Can a character chip in some cash to make up the difference instead of only using build points? eg. If he had it, could Andalon use 1BP and 600gp to build a chapel?

Spot on.   You can progressively build in a sensible chain, such as the one you described.  And the penalty is the loose change you donate to help run the town/ city - although some upgrades  don't incur much of a loss.

Nothing to shrine.  Costs 1bp - Contribution to  general city development = 400
Shrine to Chapel.  Costs 1 bp  - Contribution to  general city development = 0
Chapel to Temple.  Cost 4bp -  Contribution to  general city development = 700

Not at the moment - Although the building 'value' is in measured in GP there is no direct corelation.  One BP is nominally worth somewhere between 4000 and 6000gp and represents a mixture of all sorts of things.

Once things are settled in and we have worked the wrinkles out of the system -   we can look at it again.

Hmm, any progression for a school of visual arts? Would it just count in a same way as a religious building?

Re: OOC -  Kingdom Building Thread

This page covers 'Organisations such as churches and schools.  http://rp.baileymail.net/doku....:organisations:start

You can flavour Schools / Colleges / Academies  in anyway you like - Sword schools are for expensive because they  add to defence.

Or you can build a Shrine / Chapel / Temple (etc) dedicated to Shellyn -  and  flavour it with this trext from the wiki ...
Temples to Shelyn are spacious and filled with art and constantly have some kind of music playing within.[4] They tend to be architectural marvels, and architects and builders frequently vie for the honor to build or repair a temple of Shelyn in order to show off their skills.

Nor is there anything to stop you combining a School (of Art), A shrine or chapel to Shelyn and a Museum (of art works) to build something unique.

I am happy for people to be creative :)

Re: OOC -  Kingdom Building Thread

Speaking of 'creative', would it be possible to secure a Loan of 0.2 BP from Vik's merchant family? Between us, we can start a merchant venture with a jetty and 1 fishing boat for 2.2 BP, and we only have 2 BP between us. We can pay it back with interest of 50% within a few months, I think.

Re: OOC -  Kingdom Building Thread

Nope  :(  That isn't possible for a number of reasons.  Some of which you might like to ask Vik about :)

I gave this answer to Andalon earlier

There really isn't a correlation between GP and BP.

One solution might be to borrow a BP from one of the other PCs -  who don't want to build at the moment.  They might be prepared to take interest in cash rather than BPs.

You might be able to borrow cash from The Bank of Free Restov or the Temple of Abadar (if you needed it to pay interest)

That would give you enough to buy two jettys and the fishing boats.

Re: OOC -  Kingdom Building Thread

Putting BP in perspective.

BP is not money -  nor does 1 BP relate directly to a given amount of money.  1 BP might consist of a load of timber, the labour of a few dozen workers, a spell or two from the local cleric, The local Lord’s good will, food to feed your workers and something to pay them with.  And for these settlers they want paying in land, rights, jobs and opportunity.

If you build a Jetty (for example) – you source the wood and stone from somewhere, some rope, large bolts, nails,  building tools etc.  You have made work for quarrymen, a smith or two, wood cutters, rope makers etc.  Then you need workers to actually build it.

Afterwards the workers might move out into the countryside (to some land Henry has said you can use) and set up small holdings.  A few more turn into fishermen -  perhaps building themselves coracles or small boats or even just fishing from the Jetty.  Their wives clean the fish, etc.  Still others hang around and find casual labour somewhere.

So really BP is ‘The Economy’ – and  the number of BP you have represents the amount influence you have over the economy of the nation.

Another time, 1 BP could represent the resources you need to build something completely different – and the knock on effect you have to the economy.
