Fuzzy: Aboard the Shashka

Andalon, Adoven, Pipre, Cass

Once Anadlon introduces himself and the delegation, you are shown aboard the Shaskha and ushered into the main cabin. There are long bench seats along the sides of the cabin, with a low table set in the middle. Bannar Yitis-Aldori sits in a small chair at the head of the table, and waves you to the bench seats.  A crew member serves small clear drinks and a small selection of fish based canapes, from close to the cabin door.

"Welcome aboard the Shashka."

Andalon smiles and bows his head to the Swordlord.

"Thank you, Captain. You met Adoven on the jetty earlier. Allow me to introduce our Mayor, Cass Mordane, and Councillor Pipre who owns an establishment in town called the Bottled Nymph. We are grateful for the opportunity to speak with you to learn more about conditions along the river south of here and to explore opportunities that may benefit all of us in future."

Andalon accepts one of the small glasses of drink and raises it to eye level in salute toward the captain before taking a sip.

Aboard the Shashka

Cass waited for everyone to be seated before taking his own spot on the seating bench. He smiled to his server and took each a drink and a single canape. Cass did not indulge, but sat the items delicately before him on the table.

"Captain Yitis-Aldori, thank you for hosting us this evening. I believe the primary subjects of interest are trade and relations between Midmarch and Mivon and perhaps the River Kingdoms in general. Your expertise in these matters would be greatly appreciated."

Cass intended to correct the earlier impression he must have made by showing up abruptly on the docks. Now that he had officially been invited aboard the ship, Cass planned to win the captain over to his side as much as possible.

Not by flattering or fawning over the man, but by showing respect and enacting the proper forms of etiquette for such a situation. The captain had assuredly been through such ceremonies before and would be prone to certain expectations.

Diplomacy was much like dueling. Certain forms were required, but it was the style of the individual that could make the difference.

"Indeed" says Adoven. "The shipyards in Mivon are the nearest facility that can provide me with the tools I need to expand river trade to the north. The names of good contacts in Mivon are essential to me." Adoven adds, hoping that the prospect of additional business might entice the man to help.

Yitis-Aldori inclines his head politely as Cass speaks, and then responds courteously, "I am afraid that I cannot speak for Mivon, I am just a humble river Captain, and neither the Mayor nor the Speaker would thank me for that."

Then he pauses for a moment to listen to Adoven's follow up comments.

"Ahh.  I am afraid I am not on the best of terms with the the Vamoy Yards at the moment.  A small matter of a wager that didn't work out as any of had hoped ...  and she puts the price right up for foreigners.  Double what she would charge me." There is a few moments pause, while the captain's brow wrinkles slightly, before he breaks into a big smile.  "We have a Shallop, a small vessel that does not really suit the way we do business." his eyes narrow very slightly as he continues, "We would be prepared to swap the Shallop for for a jetty here in your new town.  It would meet your need for a vessel," he says to Adoven, before turning to Cass, "And facilitate trade between Midmarch and Mivon, as you have suggested."  Then he sits back in his seat looking quite satisfied with himself.

The swordlord snorts, and for a moment there is a dangerous glint in his eye "She is a proper vessel and worthy of the trade.  And a better deal than you would get if you came to Mivon."  However, his irritation subsides somewhat as he remembers that you are not from the River Kingdoms.  "You have my word on it.  And where I come from, Oathbreakers Die."

Andalon purses his lips and looks thoughtful.

"The Council will need to give that some thought too, Captain. Adoven and his partner Viktoria own the jetty here, so they may prefer to come to some arrangement with you regarding shared use of their jetty in exchange for use of your shallop. Perhaps, in time, that might lead to a second, independently-owned jetty when the town is big enough to warrant it?"

"But I also hoped to learn from you about conditions on the river between Tusk Town and Mivon. Would you be prepared to show us your maps of the river? What dangers and what opportunities should we expect to encounter along the way? Your ship and its Aldori swordsmen are clearly strong enough to defend themselves against pirates, or whatever else should be expected along the river. Would a vessel the size of a shallop be suited to such a trip or would it be better advised to stick to the waters within Midmarch?"
he asked.

"The Council would also be very interested in any rumours you may have heard about what the River Kingdoms might be planning in response to the new settlements here in Midmarch? Are there any other factions we should be aware of as well?"

"Fortune favours the brave, as they say, and from the docks here it looks like you hold enough. He says nodding shorewards, before he continues, "You have what you can hold.  And the Yitis-Aldori can certainly hold what we have.  Be it lizards, lights or trolls." The swordlord adds cryptically.

"Andalon, I've been studying the flows of commerce. With the new expansions in Tusk, we can easily support a second jetty in town right now. I'd likely take you up on the offer Captain, but I suspect the Town Council is fearful of expanding too much, too fast. I'll have to wrangle out a way to appease them and ease their fears before I can accept. Fortunately,  I may have a solution they'll accept" Adoven says.

While the others conversed, Cass took the opportunity to dine upon the canape and wash it down with a small drink from his glass. That way he would not be considered uncouth for either denying his host's hospitality or seeming to stuff himself greedily.

"Adoven, I would be interested to hear of your solution. Having another jetty in place before the next planning session could mean an additional tax opportunity for Tusk."

"Certainly, Cass. Employing the stone masons to build a wall for the governing District will restrict the flow that reaches the governing buildings. This will afford the city leaders a bit of stability and order with all the hustle and bustle of rapid expansion." Adoven lays out the papers he had previously drawn up for the provisions of a District wall...before he got roped into helping build a city wall instead.

"Lizards, lights or trolls?" Andalon echoes the captain's words thoughtfully. "The danger of trolls is certainly something to dread. Thankyou for that warning. By 'lights' would you mean something like will-o-wisps that might lure the unwary into danger, or something more overtly dangerous? And what type of lizards should we watch for? Humanoid types like Lizardfolk or wild animals like crocodiles or something bigger than that? We already slew a giant turtle in a cove of the Tuskwater."

"But back to business. If we allowed you to build a jetty here what sort of agreement would we have with you regarding trade between Mivon and Tusk? What is the normal arrangement in other ports along the river?"
