1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
The Beast leaps back from the spores, and if it inhales, it shows no sign other than the same hide-rattling heaving it has displayed since its appearance. The Thing lunges through the cloud, but the Beast is ready for it; it wraps a taut, too-long arm around its snout and redirects it, sending it crashing into a tree. Half of the tree's roots are ripped above ground, and the tree stands at a sharp angle.

"Chhyrrrakk!" It launches itself at the the Thing, claws flashing. In the flurry of action, the tree completes its collapse and emits a terrific crack.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
"Were-creatures, both," Reginald calls to his companions, hoping that this information might help them in the battle.

It did not seem possible to distinguish which creature was of lesser threat. At least the Beast did not seem to harbour anything more than base instincts, covering a keen intelligence. Such concerns are momentarily ignored as the dark spores wash across Reginard and Willian. Reginard holds his exquisite handkerchief to his nose as Willian turns to shield his master, and the spores wash over the two with no ill effects.

12:31, Today: Reginard Wrane the IV rolled 17 using 1d20+1.  Might defence.

Reginard decided that the Beast was the lesser of two evils; the Thing exuded a malevolent corruption that posed a direct threat to the group. Moving around to the side of the creature, Reginard begins to speak to the Thing in strange tones, the occult syllables clashing and reverberating in a harsh, terrible fashion.

12:38, Today: Reginard Wrane the IV rolled 8 using 1d20+1.  Enthrall (T) +1 effort.

OOC: Using Enthrall:
Enthrall: While talking, you grab and keep another creature’s attention, even if the creature can’t understand you. For as long as you do nothing but speak (you can’t even move), the other creature takes no actions other than to defend itself, even over multiple rounds. If the creature is attacked, the effect ends. Action.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
Blackstone glares at the spreading spore cloud, daring it to try something. He takes in no breath, he just stops breathing as he plunges through the cloud at The Thing. He places one fist into the palm of the other, plants his feet and swings a non-existent bat. The sound of impact alone is staggering. The fallen tree behind the Thing cracks in half as its body is slammed into it.

Blackstone flows back a step or two to include the Creature in his field of vision.

Blackstone rolled a 19 on his might defense check.
Blackstone rolled a 13 to hit with Wreck with specialization dealing 9 damage to The Thing.

<b>Blackstone:<b> Might: 16/18, Speed: 16/18, Intellect: 10/10

OOC:
Wreck: -1 step on attacks to deal +3 damage.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
The cloud dissipates from sight, but the fungal stench of the Thing's eruption lingers heavily. No one escapes the burst, but only Bali suffers any ill effect, and despite the visions of encroaching horror her stalwart sense of duty propels her body to action. Her axe may only hit the ground, but it is the first step forward to face the threat.

The Beast seems to outmatch the Thing for speed. The spores have no obvious effect, and it fends off a savage bite easily, redirecting its momentum to destroy the sturdy foliage. For its part, the Thing seems unhurt by the attack despite shattering a tree with the force of the impact. It has ceded the momentum of their struggle to the Beast, but shows no sign of weakening.

Reginard, having had some exposure to the rituals that can cloak a person in the forms of abomination, attempts to enrapture the Thing with a counterspell of sorts for changeling magick. The Thing notices his speech right away, hesitating just briefly enough to drop its attention from the Beast. Reginard sees a key phrase that catches its attention, and shifts to continue that particular incantation. Success! You gauge the Thing as a level 4 target. The feral rage in its eyes is momentarily replaced with panic and uncertainty, and it cannot decide what to do.

This is exactly the opening Blackstone has been looking for. With a speed befitting a horse (and a strength to match!) he pounds the Thing with inhuman might. Bone-shattering force hurls the Thing forward, and the cracking of ribs is unmistakable. The sickening noise of the crack and the horrid wheezing screech it emits sound as ugly as Blackstone looks.

It is at this moment that more sounds come from the trees. A sudden cacophony of zips, snaps, and claps announce that a great many of Lothi's traps are being set off, nearly all at once. Simian screams and hoots follow immediately, and at least one dying ourang-outang can be seem dangling grotesquely from a tree. From the edge of the glade step two gorilla warriors and a (wounded, undersized) cadre of ourang-outangs. One of the gorillas is Giggles, his broken hand wrapped in a splint of ferns. The other carries what looks to be a large macuahuitl, but it slaps the flat of the weapon and the obsidian teeth begin to spin alarmingly fast, eventually reaching a speed such that the individual teeth are merely a blur of slicing death. Giggles hoots and leads the charge.

-----

The Thing lost its action this turn and is gravely injured, but it heals rapidly. If Reginard is correct, it may revert to human form (if it was indeed human) should it survive until dawn. The Beast will chart its own course, having seen the hideous devastation that Blackstone can deliver, and may choose to face Reginard's magic or engage the delicious-looking ourang-outang that just arrived. Or maybe its survival instincts will compel it to flee.

The apes are off to a slow start thanks to the damage and confusion caused by the barricade of snares. Giggles is hooting orders in the ape-tongue, commanding Chainsaw to make a move for Blackstone. Defending against the weapon is a level 4 Speed defense roll, failure results in 6 damage and a bleeding injury. The ourang-outang footmen wield simple macuahuitl, with two apiece charging Reginard and Bali. Individually they attack vs a level 2 Speed defense while they try to get into a flanking position.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
With The Thing quelled, The Beast fixates on the loudest combatant: Giggles. It hurls itself through the advancing simian line in a whirl of claw and bone, and strikes out with bone-shattering force against the gorilla. He is hurled back into the dirt, and spends one terrifying moment looking into the shining black eyes of The Beast that lurches to a stop above him. He is plucked up by a leg and impaled upon a group of nearby branches before he can breathe to scream.

Rolled a 20 on a Run and Fight roll with 1 Effort to hit and 1 to damage. Altogether that should be 14 damage - 4 for claw, 4 for 20, 4 for effort, 2 for Run and Fight.

Bali drowns within the voices and tumult in her mind. Then, suddenly, the moon shines a brighter light on her. Her implement burns her hand, and the pain refocuses her. The low gods are there, nevermind what Reginard said. The low gods are there.
Breathing hard, Bali swings her greataxe against the ape trying to manoeuver around her and hit her.

Blackstone spins to the side and presses his back against the shattered log as Chainsaw thrusts past him. The teeth of the weapon tear open his tattered tunic, and chew a deep gash in his abdomen. Blackstone growls through the pain and grasps Chainsaw's wrists, fighting for control of the whining blade. Blackstone throws a kick at the hairy knee of his opponent, there is a meaty crack of impact, and Blackstone wrenching the strange weapon from Chainsaw's hands flinging it deeper into the camp.
"Fight me with out your toys, Ape!" Snarls Blackstone.

Blackstone rolled a 5 for a specialized speed defense against Chainsaw, taking 4 (6 -2 armor) damage from the attack.
Blackstone rolled an 8 for a specialized disarm attack dealing 6 damage and throwing the weapon 10 ft.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
With his companions engaging the ape-horde, Reginard approaches the strange Thing with cautious scientific curiosity. He had a good gauge of the Beast's thoughts; now it was time to find out what - or who - the Thing really was.

19:19, Today: Reginard Wrane the IV rolled 12 using 1d20+1.  Reading the Thing's mind.

OOC: I am assuming our Thingy friend is unable to react - if there is a chance Reginard will be attacked, he will try to avoid engaging anyone if possible.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
The simian attack falls to shambles almost as quickly as it begins. The Beast, though barely half the size of Giggles, whirls toward him in a demonic fury. The gorilla, eager to receive a challenge, has no time to register his own death as the branches erupt from his chest. His eyes tremble as he vainly struggles to breathe, but The Beast takes time only to confirm that Giggles will not survive before turning its attention to the remaining prey.

Bali, her mind reeling from the spores, recalls her heritage and her training. All priests learn that any vessel, no matter how meek or mighty, can be a force of divine retribution. Faith is the only requirement, and it is faith that purifies her mind and moves her body. The first attacker is clubbed squarely in the chest, his ribcage shattering and piercing into his lungs. He feebly collapses, his last breaths spent whimpering. His combat companion, suddenly lacking in support, halts his assault and flees from the glowing dwarf woman.

Blackstone's direct approach and fearless retaliation catch Chainsaw off-guard. While the gorilla expected terror and death at the bite of his weapon, Blackstone merely accepts the wound and evens the battlefield. Chainsaw shakes the pain from its injured arm and decides that Blackstone is best addressed through constraint. He catches Blackstone in a crushing bear hug. GM Intrusion! 1 XP to Blackstone and 1 to the player of his choice. The grapple crushes for 6 points of Might damage (armor can reduce this) and you must pass a level 4 Might check to escape it. The bleeding wound deals 1 point of Might damage per round, armor does not reduce, and continues until you take an action to staunch the wound.

Reginard, willfully disregarding the chaos around him, reaches out with his mind to delve into the Thing's mysteries.  The pair of ourang-outangs that were charging Reginard close the gap while he is mind-linking the Thing, and make their first attack. Defending against the combined attack is a level 3 Speed defense against 5 points of damage.

The Thing, its shadowy hide crawling back together around bones that knit together fast enough to cause audible cracking, heaves to its knees and begins running on all fours for the edge of the encampment. It runs away from where the gorillas entered, toward an undisturbed edge of the camp.

-----

Chainsaw and the two ourang-outangs on Reginard have not noticed how swiftly Giggles was dispatched. The Thing attempts to flee, and the only remaining assailants are Giggles and the two attacking Reginard.

The Beast makes to fall upon the ourang-outangs, but skids to a halt as the Thing rises and flees. It huffs, shaking its head and shoulders as it looks from the ourang-outangs to the Thing. It turns to the Thing and roars.

The Beast launches itself into the air and lands upon the Thing, claws and teeth flashing.

Rolled an 11 on a Run and Fight claw attack for 10 damage. Effort spent on attack and damage. Trained.

As one ourang crashes down beneath her axe, the other one flanking Bali turns pale and flees. As her mind's eye displays the battle, the apes threatening Reginard metaphorically flare up. With a hop of her short legs she clears the distance towards the closest one, and her axe raises, falls again.

Bali employs Successive Attack on the same turn she mashed the ourang-outang: "2 Speed If you take down a foe, you can make another attack (melée or ranged) on the same turn against another foe in range as part of the same action. Enabler."
Bali Balsdottir rolled 14 using 1d20.  Attacking the orangs around Rex, 1 Might Effort to damage. If a hit, that's 6+3 base damage.

Reginard breaks the mind link with the Thing just in time to see the ourang-outangs lumber into proximity. Willian brandishes his makeshift club at the simians while the surprisingly unperturbed Reginard moves backwards towards the tree in the shape of stairs, climbing as high as possible out of their reach. He takes the opportunity to evaluate how the battle is shaping up - were these the only threats left, or were more creatures lurking in the shadows?

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
The Thing, fleeing the unexpected melee, makes very little progress before being intercepted by the Beast. Darkness and shadow swell, mingle, and scream. The sound is piercing, but mercifully short. Whatever anatomy lay within the teeming shadows loses its vitality, and the Beast shakes a maw full of ragged, aetherial flesh before swallowing it whole.

The smaller apes scream as Bali rends them with curt, efficient blows. Her movements are precise, though they spend more strength than purely necessary for the sake of evincing her true strength. Bones split like twigs before her axe, and her attackers lie broken before her. From behind her, an sound erupts like a bear being thrown into a lake. She turns her head to see Blackstone, his horrible face smeared with ape-blood, standing over the body of what was once, presumably, a gorilla. The entire chest is caved in and the lower jaw hangs limp like a pouch of marbles. Bali has seen horses crushed by boulders launched from catapults, and the damage she sees here is remarkably similar.

Reginard, with an arrogance befitting his station, detaches himself from the immediate threats while leaving his companions to dispatch the material threats. As Bali cleaves through ourang-outangs and Blackstone devastates the other gorilla, Reginard peers into the dark outskirts of the camp to find new threats. His eyes can hardly adjust to the jungle's darkness with the campfire still offering its light, but he hears the hoots of terrified apes and screaming monkeys growing more distant. The presence of dark creatures may have been good timing for an ambush, but the brutal defenses mounted by the explorers seems to have scared off further assailants.

What remains are the explorers, a holocaust of dead primates, and the Beast, which is momentarily distracted by its cannibalistic triumph.

1.1 - Finding Dol'kuruk
With his hand Blackstone wipes the blood and bits of gorilla skull from his face. Noticing his ruined shirt he growls, "I cant replath thith..." He pinches his nose and pops it back into place. "I can't replace this out here." Seeing the gaping wound beneath the shirt he rolls his eyes. He peels off the tattered rags, exposing a torso that is more scar than flesh. His skin appears to have been patched up more than the dirty, worn clothes he was wearing.

Blackstone punches part of the fallen tree loosening a few long splinters, he pinches the gash closed and begins pinning the wound shut. He then grabs a hand full of dirt and mulch and presses that over the wound, the blood immediately soaks in creating a muddy paste. Finally, he wraps what remains of his shirt around his waist and pulls it tight securing his patch job. All of this is done with only minor grimaces.

Blackstone staunches the bleeding and uses his 2nd recovery roll to heal 5 his Quick recovery ability lets him do this in 1 round.

Seeing that only the Beast remained on the battlefield, Reginard descends from his lofty perch and strides towards the strange creature. Reginard speaks loudly so that his comrades and the Beast can hear. "The Beast is intelligent - I shall magically enthrall it so that it cannot attack, but no-one can do harm to the creature or the charm will dissipate. Find a way to trap the creature so that it cannot do us further harm!"

Stopping within only a few paces of the creature, Reginard begins to chant in soothing tones, staring coolly at the Beast and willing it to focus solely on the sound of his magic-infused mantras.

OOC: Using "Enthrall" - 1 Int - While talking, you grab and keep another creature’s attention, even if the creature can’t understand you. For as long as you do nothing but speak (you can’t even move), the other creature takes no actions other than to defend itself, even over multiple rounds. It is time for Bali Balsdóttir to wear her other mantle. She steps forward with the holy symbol of the low gods pointed to the Thing. Halted from its orgiastic cannibalism, something else in the Beast takes over. It collapses to the ground with a wrenching moan. Its flesh begins to slough off, burning into acrid black smoke as it touches the earth. For a few moments, it looks like the beast has become bonfire. But then the smoke rises, leaving the shivering form of an elf behind.

Her head snaps up to look at Reginard - her eyes and mouth contorted in surprising rage - and she spits, "Stop your mind-magic! Get out of me! Damn you!"

Blackstone immediately moves Lothi into the extremely dangerous category in his head. He moves to the disheveled pile of supplies left in the cart and digs around for a spare cloak or blanket. He carries the large piece of cloth over to her, keeping a sharp eye on her the whole time. He seems completely unfazed by her transformation as he offers her something against the night's chill. "Here." His eyes meet her's with an "If you try anything I will fight you," look.

It appears that none of the scars that cover his now bare torso and arms were properly tended to and have left their ugly lines all over his body. As he moves past the fire sharp eyes can pick up a hint of a series of nearly faded scars among all the others that look almost intentional, almost surgical.

Wisps of shadow boil from the Thing as Bali speaks her prayers. The writhing mist disappears, and solid flesh coalesces beneath. Patches of skin boil and blister, yet turn up whole swatches of renewed skin beneath. The process looks horrifyingly painful, were the Thing not already dead and partly eaten.

The transition does nothing for the wounds; great chunks of the person are missing, savage toothmarks and gashes marking them all over. The body is thin and wiry, nothing like the fearsome terror of its transformed self. As the restoration completes, it resolves into an elven boy (though boyhood by elven standards is several decades, so his precise age is a gamble). He wears almost nothing, but what he does wear is of very good make.

Reginard stoops to look impassively at the elf's body. Inside, he felt some remorse at having participated in the elf's death - however, it was attacking them and at least Reginard had been able to assist with bringing the Beast / Lothi under control.

He rips off a piece of the cloth for later identification, then instructs Willian to turn the body to see if there are any other items that might help with identification.

Standing at last, he addresses his companions. "Let us bury this one to avoid attracting any other creatures, and continue in the morning."

Sire. I do not stand in your way when you prepare speeches. Kindly let me do my work. Please gather some wood, rather. It is my understanding that creatures like this should be burned to avoid their reawakening. Does everyone agree? I will need your help.
Bali positions the body lying face up, bandages the wounds, covers it with an impromptu shroud, and lights some herbs next to the boy's face. She then kneels behind it, and intones an okuribito prayer. She takes the boy's hands one at a time, straightening the fingers and softening the muscles. Bali continues by massaging the muscles of the face, legs, feet. She covers the elf boy's face with a light makeup to make it look as lifelike as possible. Singing a low dirge, the cleric cuts the hair of the elf and combs it, and presents the body to the group to acknowledge together the recent death.
Her ritual completed, she gets up and bows to the corpse again.

and now I remembered the movie. sniffle.
