1.3.1 - Through Dungeons Deep and Caverns Old
Blackstone places his hand against the wall near where Willian was staring. He holds the torch close looking for some kind of seam.
"Now where exactly did he disappear through?"

Blackstone rolled a 13 to search for secret doors.

Lothi sighs, then remembers that she lost the ability to judge anybody on the expedition last night. Instead, she turns her mind to productive matters. Perhaps these symbols would yield to a modern elven perspective.

Rolled a 12 on Perception, in which I am trained.

Bali approaches the point Willian talks to. She feels... Nothing clear. This stone does not yield yet its secrets. It will take more. Perhaps blood.

Bali Balsdottir rolled 4 using 1d20.  Stone sense.

1.3.1 - Through Dungeons Deep and Caverns Old
Blackstone is confident that there are no doors, despite having passed through one to enter the room. Under torchlight and careful scrutiny, he assesses that the stone is actually flowing, almost imperceptibly, but likely can flow faster if it so chooses.

If it chooses? If something else chooses? What controls this place?

Lothi notices the same flow, but spies a spot on the wall indicated by Willian that does not follow the same pattern. When a stream flows, there are whirling eddies next to obstructions in the water. Lothi spies something similar to this in the wall, an empty place without decoration where the flowing stone breaks around rather than filling. The hole is roughly the size of the stone carried by the creature outside.

Bali assesses the stone, and realizes she knows nothing. It is not her deep familiarity of geology that fails her, however, but the stark realization that this is not stone in any common sense of the term. This material does not have the scent, the touch, the heft, or the structure of stone. She doesn't know what it is, but she definitely knows what it isn't.

Reginard gave his bonus XP to Blackstone, by the way.

"That stone. It might belong here." Lothi jabs the flowing wall with her finger. She slips her scimitar back into her belt and steps back, gazing at the wall.

"Reginard took that stone with him. We'll probably need another key."
Blackstone places his hand against that spot and presses firmly.

Blackstone's arm goes cold. He pulls back, only to find that his palm is stuck to the wall. Flowing stone coalesces around his had, and delicately carved figurines begin to bubble up from the wall.

Yanking the arm from the wall is a level 4 Might task, but brute force may incur damage to Blackstone.

"Gah, it's cold, like that shard." He tries to jerk his hand back out of reflex when the stone begins to ooze over it, but it holds fast. He jerks again, a little harder, but is still being enveloped by the stone.
"Well two questions. Since it's not letting me back out, should we just trying to push through? Also, is everyone seeing the same little tower, sword, and horse, or are those just in my head?"

Blackstone rolled a 6 on his might check to break free from the wall.

Bali approaches the wall slowly caressing the holy symbol of the low gods in a spiral, muttering a mantra against evil spirits. She gets as close to the joint of flesh and material as she can without touching. Her holy symbol starts shining. The strange material is still flowing and shaping itself, never stopping, around Blackstone's hand.

Lothi... Maybe if you can pray with me. I'm not sure this will work. I don't remember seeing something like this.

Bali Balsdottir searches her and and her memories: the ritual of Deliverance requires payment in both blood and mind. Brother... No. Father. Father's memories will help here. His body. She found his body gently hanging. Yes. Tears flow and mix with the blood she lets out of her cheeks with her small carving dagger. More bloody tears flow as her holy symbol turns dark. The low gods seem to have turned her back on her. Damned expedition.

Bali Balsdottir rolled 4 using 1d20.  Divine Radiance (2 Int, 1 edge).

Light from Blackstone's torch flickers as Bali invokes the powers of the Low Gods. Whether what happens next is in response to her prayers or in retaliation is unclear.

The flame jumps from the torch, and the wall catches fire. Blinding sparks fly as the shifting stone ignites, including the area around Blackstone's hand. Blackstone takes 3 points of burning damage, ignoring armor. Sparks continue to fly as a searing heat eats through the wall. The burning lasts for nearly half a minute before the burning stops abruptly.

The hole in the wall reeks like ozone. It is not tall enough to walk through, but each of you could crawl through comfortably. The flowing rock whirls around the burn, stone keloids obstructing the flow. You watch long enough to determine that the tunnel is not constricting or moving.

Willian, his dry composure returning, gestures to the hole with his empty hand. "Ladies first?" he suggests to Bali.

I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! Bali cries and jumps back from the sparks. The low gods have given her nothing but grief. It's almost as if she should go it alone.
As the hole coalesces and Willian sarcastically invites her in, she just crouches a bit, steps into it and observes.
Bali Balsdottir rolled 11 using 1d20.  Perception: tunneling.

Blackstone waves Willian through next. "I'll bring up the rear again."

He pauses momentarily searching the carvings flowing around the hole for anything else that might be familiar, and then hurries through.

1.3.1 - Through Dungeons Deep and Caverns Old
The wall maintains its form while you pass through it. As you emerge on the opposite side, you see formless darkness at the end of your torchlight. A faint breeze swirls indecisively. Looking up, you see a colossal gnarl of roots. Looking down, you see a cascading ziggurat the same color as the flowing stone in the chamber you just departed. Each layer is at least 15 feet high. You see no indication of stairs, but the outcroppings on each face are regularly spaced and protrude adequately for usage as handholds. Clearly, it is not meant to be traversed regularly by humans.

You can see at least 2 layers below you. Judging by the size of the tree above you, it is likely that this complex extends much, much farther.

This is something Bali could look at with confidence renewed... If not for the details. The material is wrong. The size is wrong. The silence is wrong. The whole situation is one big NO. And yet. And still.
I don't suppose he started flying all of a sudden... I hope. I don't like this. It looks like we're alone now. I'll risk something.
Bali takes out a small stone from her pack, and starts rubbing it between her hands. The glow is almost imperceptible at first, but soon the space around them is lit up.
I guess we'd better set up for the descent. Help me with the rope?

Bali used her floating stone cypher.

Blackstone begins to uncoil the rope from their supplies. Once uncoiled he drops one end over the lip and looks around for an outcropping or something similar to secure this end of the line. He also inspects the wall to see if the same flow-stone has been used on this end of the wall.

1.3.1 - Through Dungeons Deep and Caverns Old
The outside surface is a frigid, dead stone, still as any other. As Bali's light drifts into the forbidding, dark silence, its thin stream of light reveals yet more of the ziggurat stretching ever downward in the darkness. At the edge of your vision, another archway serves as a portal into the ziggurat.

Willian prepares a grapple and a stretch of rope to rappel down to the next level. As he does so, you spy movement below. A glint of something large emerges from a doorway before scuttling down another level lower.

Perception checks may reveal more about the scuttling thing, and everyone who wishes to descend with Willian will need to make a level 2 Might check. Failure means falling to the next level, which does not cause damage, but may cause noise.

Lothi extends a hand to Willian; after a moment, he acquiesces and gives the grapple and rope to her. She jams the grapple into a gap in the stone, and kicks it in to secure it. She leaps off, and runs down the wall with an absurd grace. This place makes sense to her; it is a place made for her body in small, unconscious ways, and the dimensions of it fit better than any human city has. Despite its alien qualities there is a (perhaps imagined) aspect of homecoming to this.

In three quick steps she reaches the next layer, and she leaves the rope and moves to the edge in a crouch - she catches sight of this movement. She sees much.

Lothi is apparently in her element. Rolled 20 on Climbing, which I'm trained in. I spent a level of effort on Perception, which I am also trained in, and rolled an 18.

The descent is not as easy for Bali as it is for the elf, but it will do. For now. As she reaches the lower level, the depths glitter for an instant. Bali's senses are undaunted by her gods, happy to be in a familiar underground environment for a change. It's been too damn long. Through her fingers on the material, through her ears and eyes, the vast darkness fades away and things are perceived.

Bali rolled 19 for perception
Bali rolled 10 for climbing down

Blackstone squints hard at the scuttling form, "Hrmm" he grunts to himself. Placing his scarred hands on the edge of the stair he swings his bulky form over the edge. He lowers himself far enough to drop without injury. He creeps to the ledge of the next level and peers for the creature again.

Blackstone rolled a 17 for his perception, and a 10 for his climb check.

Major effect for Lothi's roll! As Lothi slides down the wall, she notices that the decorative patterns on the wall are textured in such a way that they can be used as impromptu handholds. Climbing them directly is harder than using your ropes (difficulty level 4) but would allow you to retrieve your grapples.

Willian is the slowest to descend, but manages the drop without difficulty. The rest of you see clearly a curious pattern performed below you. You can see more openings now, from which glinting, beetle-like figures emerge. They do not remain outside long, merely long enough to chitter to another opening, some with empty mandibles, others carrying dull bricks. Each is roughly the size of a mule, though broader and flatter.

After a moment, no more of the creatures emerge. A frigid wind slides up from the darkness. Gusts blast and subside, but you are near enough to the apex that it does not trouble you. When the wind subsides, the beetles return to work, oblivious to your presence.

There is a single entryway on this face of the ziggurat, and many more on the descending layers of the structure.

You are three storeys above the nearest beetles.

Bali rises up from her hands and knees, pats the dirt off her hands, and looks around. She murmurs to Lothi "Hey, I'm going to check this out" as she peers into the entryway on this floor with her lightstone. What she sees is...

16:18, Today: Bali Balsdottir rolled 14 using 1d20.  More perception: examining the entryway.
