Death House

A wrought iron gate with it's hinges on one side and a lock on the other fills the archway of a stone portico. The gate is cold as you touch it, unlocked. It's rusty hinges shriek as you slide it open. Oil lamps hang from the portico, unlit, by chains. They flank a a set of mahogany oaken doors

As the group leave the children behind, one could notice the heavy mists closing in upon the group and the house. They quickly engulf the children, and come short of the doors as you enter the domain.

The doors open upon a grand foyer. You notice, hanging on the south side of the wall, on your right, a shield emblazoned with a coat or arms, a golden windmill on a red field. The symbol is flanked by two sets of portraits, figuring stony-faced aristocrats. A closer look at the doors reveals panels of stained glass, making it impossible to peer inside.

The doors are unlocked, a shrieks loudly as you open them, almost like a scream.

A wide hall runs through the width of the house. The level is clean, and free of dust. You notice that the furniture and hangings are devout of age, almost like new. A black marble fireplace stands at the north, and an immense sweeping red marble staircase to the south.

You notice, mounted above the fireplace, a longsword. A closer look upon the object is a windmill cameo worked into the hilt. The wood paneled wall are ornately sculpted with images of vines, nymphs, and satyrs, and even flowers.

On the east side, there are two sets of doors, one larger than the other. On the west side, right by the where you entered the hall, is another set of doors.

"I just want to point out, for posterity sake, that I think this is a terrible idea." Despite his comment, Khelsear seems a bit excited to go in after whatever monster these kids are talking about.

"Which part?" Valla asked Khelsear, admiring the plainly gothic decor. "Charging in to face an unknown creature of presumably cursed or undead nature at the request of a pair of disturbing children, or doing so for no compensation behind a barbarian?" she added with evident sarcasm. "Are there any compunctions about taking a bit or two in our travels?" she asked, eyeing the longsword mounted on the wall.

Bjorn marching straight towards him, mindset ready for anything, opens up a set of doors right in front of him.

The centerpiece of this wood-paneled dining room is a carved mahogany table, porting eight high backed chairs, each with fine sculpted armrests and cushioned seats. A crystal chandelier hangs above the table, which is covered with amazing silverware, all properly lined-up an ready to use, polished to a dazzling shine. Mounted above the fireplace is a mahogany-framed painting of an alpine vale.

The wall paneling is carved with elegant images of deer among trees.

Red silk drapes cover the windows, and a tapestry depicting hunting dogs and horse-mounted aristocrats chasing after a wolf hangs from an iron rod bolted to the southern wall.

A door on the other end of the eatery opens up back to the hall, next to the swirling staircase, and to another door, leading south.

A member of the party would open the middle doors in the hall, which would open to what would seem a cloakroom. Several black, clean, cloaks, hang from copper hooks on the walls. A top hat sits on a high shelf.

(OOC: I didn't quite get the layout of the doors. We have one door that leads back to the hall, one to cloakroom and one to the east? If so i'll open the eastern one.

"While I don't like to resort to thievery, we may find ourselves with no other option," Edrik responded to Valla glibly.

The knight had kept his blade drawn as they walked through the manor; it was strangely well kept for a building that potentially had a monster rampage through its halls.

"Anyone else curious as to why there are no signs of a monster's presence?" the young nobleman inquired to his companions.

Bjorn hurriedly investigates each room he can find on the first floor, hoping to find this creature prowling on little children.

The southern door opens up to a kitchen, tidy and neat. Dishware, cookware, and utensils are placed upon many shelves. A worktable has a cutting board and rolling pin placed upon it. A stone, domed shaped oven stands near the eastern wall, it's bent iron stovepipe connecting to a hole in the ceiling. Behind the stove and to the left is a thin door leading to a small pantry, full of fresh produce and other foods.

A door in the back of the room leads to a dumbwaiter, a 2 foot-wide stone shaft leads to a wooden elevator and box, attached to a simple rope-pulley mechanism. Hanging on the wall is a tiny brass bell attached by wires and buttons.

A character would investigate the last room to the southern end and stumble upon a hunters den. Mounted above it's fireplace is a very large stags head, and positioned around the outskirts are three stuffed wolves. Two padded chairs draped in animal furs face the hearth, with an oak table between them, supporting a cask of wine, two carved goblets, a pipe rack, and a candelabrum. A chandelier hangs above a cloth-covered table surrounded by four chairs.

Two cabinets stand against the walls. A large one sporting an evident padlock, and smaller one, that can opened to find a simple deck a playing cards and an assortment of wine glasses.

Valla took the sword from its perch on the wall, testing its edge as she held it. She had certainly never trained with such a weapon, having relied on her protector for most of her life. Stashing it in her belt at her hip, she followed Bjorn until reaching the dumbwaiter. She reached in and rattled the box, listening closely for any sounds that may come from above or below.

Valla attentively rattles the dumbwaiters rope, hoping to hear things from above. A small amount of dust and crud seems to fall from the top of the shaft. The dumbwaiter does not go below, only above. It would be evidently impossible for anyone of the party to climb inside. A quick survey of the shaft shows that the rope seems to go up at least two stories high.

Jihe finally speaks up, having felt hemmed in by the ominous fog. They were just as "trapped" in this mansion, but at least this was familiar...

"That is what the child said. Maybe we should had back outside? There might be a basement entrance..."

But as the party explores the mansion, and Jihe notices the fog that has surrounded the mansion, he goes quiet again.

Bjorn rapidly searches the first floor of this old, yet quaint and well kept mansion, for doors leading to the basement. None of the cabinets or doors you find seems to lead the way underground.

At Bjorn's outburst, Valla sighs. Having investigated the dumbwaiter to her satisfaction, she casually exited the house and circled it, looking for a cellar hatch.

Valla opens the front door, only to find a thick wall of mist, blocking everything from view. Strangely, the fog stops short of the portico, nothing passing through the mansions access.

You find this strange, yet take nothing of it, and walk into the mist. A few seconds as you start looking for your way around, you sense a strange, heavy burden upon your shoulders. It's becoming harder and harder to breathe, and you sense an unnatural cold. You start seeing dark shapes swirling in the mists, large creature. You can't see anything specific, but these apparitions are truly horrifying.

As you start to realize the error you have just committed, you realize that you can barely move. As you turn around, trying to muster all of your strength to return to your mates, you feel as though something is gripping you to ground. You sense urgency. While, in the few seconds you had remained outside, you start losing hope, a strange, strong, yet familiar force, pulls you back into the house. A strange shape surrounds you, as you roll upon the floor, flying through the room.

Valla gasped and collapsed where she was tossed through the foyer, rolling onto her back and spouting a strained "Thank you..." to the air. She climbed the shelving she had been thrown into to reach her feet, still struggling to fill her lungs. "Exiting the house is no longer an option." she called out.

The swirling staircase leads to an upper hall. Unlit oil lamps are mounted on the walls. And, hanging above the mantelpiece is a wood-framed portrait of family; a closer inspection reveals two children that very closely resembles the children you had met outside, accompanied by a stoic looking couple. A baby is held by the father, which is given a scorn, resentful look by the mother. The portrait lacks any smiles.

In the eastern and western halls stand suits of armor. Each suit clutches a spear and has a visored helm shaped like a wolf's head. The doors are carved with dancing youth. A single door stands at your right as you climb the steps of the staircase, and two sets of double doors lead respectively to the east and west.

As the group arrives and inspects this stage, a cold draft can be felt coming down from the third floor. It gives you goosebumps and shivers.
