Day 5 - Early Risers

Morg looks at Bram, "So, not a stealth mission... Good! Let's go knock in some heads."

He goes to his room, returning a few minutes later smiling, armored, and loaded with weapons on his belt and backpack

Day 5 - Early Risers

Mayon shakes his head with a faint smile. "Perhaps those of us who are less quiet could just, stay a little bit further back while we walk." Even if he didn't have loud clanging armor the way the others did, he was a little bit of a klutz.

Day 5 - Early Risers

Jak grinned at Mayon and then looked slowly up towards the ceiling and away as if embarrassed. "Welllllll, seein' as how I used t'think I was stealthy, but last time I was there I got heard preeeeeetty easily...." He let the sentence hang and trail off, giving a shrug and a chuckle.

He shook his head, turning serious. "Our intention should NOT be a fight tonight, however. We need t'see what they are up to, an' who they are in fact if we can. So we definitely shouldn't kill any of 'em."

Day 5 - Early Risers

Leaving as quietly as they can from the back door, the group makes their way behind the buildings of the town, keeping to the shadows. All is still in the cold night air, with no travelers even on the dimly lit main road through town.

The walls of the quarry are fairly steep but navigable. The group makes their way down to the floor of the quarry with as much stealth as they can muster.

The quarry too seems empty of occupants, at least for those who can see. Various mining tools are scattered about, and several storage tunnels dot the steeper slopes of the quarry. Several of these look as though cave-ins render them unusable, as on their prior visit.

Everyone should make a stealth check as part of their next post.

Jak has a hooded lantern if he wants to use it; otherwise, I'm assuming the non-darkvisioned in the party are being led somehow.

Day 5 - Early Risers

Bramwell didn't especially like being made to skulk through the dark.  Yet, the written words of a long-dead Glyphscribe came to him then: "Those unwilling to venture into darkness cannot hope to bring truths into the light."  He could only hope that truths were to be found here, rather than a sentence to the Constable's cells.

Once the party arrived at the bottom of the quarry Bram whispered, "Mellikho became unusually agitated when Morg tried to investigate these cave-ins.  I cannot say how, but I suspect that whatever she's hiding must be near those..."  The paladin approached the caved-in tunnel that the quarrymistress had warned Morg away from and peered inside, looking closely for signs of anything suspicious or out of place.

Bram is surprisingly sneakier than expected!:

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Jak made sure he had everything before they left, including the hooded lantern out and oil-filled but unlit. He waited until they got outside before he lit the lantern and got it shined properly to help him and his teammates without giving away their position as they moved stealthily along as much as they could.

There didn't seem to be anyone at the quarry as of yet, but he looked around slowly. He gave a nod to Bramwell's words in acknowledgement and agreement. He moved to help investigate the "caved-in" tunnels.

12:59, Today: Secret Roll: Jakrynn Redgate rolled 17 using 1d20+4 with rolls of 13.  Stealth.
13:00, Today: Secret Roll: Jakrynn Redgate rolled 13 using 1d20+3 with rolls of 10.  Investigation (as needed).

Morg, confident in his ability around quarries, joins the rest in looking at the chosen caved-in tunnel. His lack of experience in wearing armor while doing so, trips him up tho.

Mayon tries his best to keep quiet, but isn't particularly sure of foot and occasionally stumbles over himself in the darkness, though his pale eyes peer intently for any signs of life within the quarry in case the strange figures are already there or arriving.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Mayon and the others see no trace of man nor beast in the quarry, masked or otherwise.

Poking through the rubble of the collapsed tunnel, Morg, Jak, and Bram find they can easily slide one particularly tall rock to one side. Behind it a tunnel slopes downward beneath the hillside, into darkness.

Bram assisted his companions in pushing aside a large stone, although it moved much more easily than one might expect.  Some clever trick of balance, no doubt.  Marveling at the discovery, the paladin says, "Well, it seems that Mellikho was hiding something after all.  This must be where the elusive stone-masked men have been hiding all this time."  He donned his shield and battleaxe and added, "Best arm ourselves, friends.  The occupants will not be pleased to see us."

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Jak was surprised at the easy-moving rock. He nodded at Bram. "Geez. I gotta a baaaaaad feelin' about this." Even though he knew there was almost certainly danger ahead, he didn't hesitate. He grabbed the hooded lantern and his shield and began walking down the tunnel, keeping an eye out for traps or anything else. He wasn't desperately trying to be first, and was more than happy to let others go ahead of him, though only one or two so the light would be effective still.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

The group makes their way slowly into the tunnel. Just past the tumble of rocks blocking the entrance, a number of torches stick out of a heap of damp sand.

A soft cold breeze wafts past them as they advance. At first the tunnel slopes noticeably downward, but eventually levels off. Footing becomes muddy.

Abruptly, the tunnel opens into a wide, irregularly shaped cavern. Jak and Dwee squint around in the dim pin-point light, though the others can see adequately. Damp dirt and stone, with tree roots protruding here and there, make up the walls. A stone slab — a door with a rusty pull-ring — stands to the east. By the stone door, a couple well-used cloaks and a waterskin are on the floor next to a small wooden coffer.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Bramwell touches the stone walls on the way into the cavern and rubs his fingers together, then remarks thoughtfully, "It's rather damp down here...  we must be below well-depth."

In the cavern, he peers about and then says, "I think we may risk a little light..."  He draws forth the orb they'd found in Lance Rock cave and willed it to brighten with the light of a small sun.  The Glyphscribe squints against the brightness, but nonetheless smiles in appreciation of the magical effect.  He then cautiously approaches the door and begins checking it over for traps.

Activating the Driftglobe with the Daylight spell and holding it.

Moving to Y36 and investigating the door for traps, and if it seems to be locked.

The coffer doesn't appear to be trapped, and looks to contain flint and steel, along with six dry torches.

The cloaks are quite plain, devoid of any markings or adornments. The waterskin is half full of water.

Jak looked around as best he could. He covered his eyes when Bramwell indicated he would risk more light. Then he opened them slowly so they would adjust better. He looked around again with more light and then moved closer to the door. "Well. A door in a tunnel. THAT'S certainly not weird at all. I wonder if it's naturally-occurin' door?" He chuckled, glancing at Morg.

"Onward an' inward, yah? No sense in stoppin' now we found somethin' int'restin'."

Move to V-36.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Bram glanced over Morg's shoulder at the flint and steel within the coffer, then considered the unlit torches.  He mused, "The keeping of torches and tools for their ignition next to the door would seem to indicate that lighting is not provided below.  The cloaks indicate that one might expect to be dripped upon below.  I'd deduce from these clues that this location is unlikely to be an established habitation.  Perhaps these caverns were uncovered only recently and the process of exploration is still underway.  If so, I wonder what it is that the stone-masks seek below...?"

The paladin faced the door and its rusty pull-ring, then turned toward the group and said, "Let's proceed, shall we?"  Once all were ready, He'd take hold of the ring and attempt to pull the door open.

Bram pulls on the door and it opens smoothly.

Beyond, a passage of dressed stone slopes downward. About sixty feet in it looks like stone slabs face each other on opposite sides of the passageway.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Morg borrows the cloaks, hanging them thru the coil of rope on his backpack. He then looks around for any traps, like ledges from which boxes of rocks can be thrown, and makes way for the others to also check.

If everyone agrees that the passage seems safe, he slowly and quietly makes his way down the passage a bit, looking at the stonework of the passage and slabs to see if he recognizes anything from how they were made.
Move: to Y37 initially, then making way for others to check, and if everyone agrees it's safe, a bit farther in to see the stonework.

04:57, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 5 using 1d20+3 with rolls of 2.  Perception check for traps.
04:57, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 6 using 2d20+1, dropping the highest dice only with rolls of 5,17.  Stealth check with disadvantage (from chain mail) to try and quietly go down passageway.
04:57, Today: Secret Roll: Morg Danforge rolled 8 using 1d20+4 with rolls of 4. History check on origin of stonework (stonecunning double proficiency).

Jak frowned at Asano. "Should those of us not blessed with darksight go wait by the entrance then, let ya'll more dark-inclined ones do the searchin'? Wouldn't want our light t'mess ya up." There is a bit of acid to his tone, but not much, more like a little annoyance than anger. He didn't want to be a problem for the rest of the group, but light sources were a normal thing for him.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Morg doesn't see any traps or things out of order. He moves a bit past the stone door down the tunnel.

Peering ahead, Morg can tell that the tunnel levels out about sixty feet beyond the stone door. Two stone reliefs of stern dwarves in chain mail and carrying battleaxes face each other across the tunnel. The carvings stand out from the passage walls, and they have gaps around them, so they could be doors. The passage continues past them into darkness.

Map updated. The stone dwarves face each other at columns AL & AM.
