Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

The group retraces their steps back to the room with the Dwarven statue. They find it empty of tied up Bringers of Woe.

The stone door to the passageway leading east is open, and the door at the far end is closed.

Map updated. The party is in the Dwarf Statue room. Slide 2 on the map is what the zoomed-in map would look like if you're all headed right for the eastern door.

Dweeble advanced forward along the passageway with her eyes open, the dagger in her hand once more glowing with cold light as she spoke the command word in a hushed whisper.  Holding it before her cautiously, she examined the cut walls, ceiling, and floor as she approached the closed door on the other side.  After waiting for the others to catch up, she carefully attempted to open the door and peer out.

Just moving things along.  She's watching for any signs of traps or hidden things along the walls and such.  If the door is locked, she can always attempt to pick it easily enough.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

The group sees nothing unusual until proceeding through the door at the end of the hallway.

An enormous chamber with a twenty-foot ceiling has been carved out of the rock here. A lighted lantern rests on the floor near the center of the room. An odd array of stone monoliths — some upright standing stones, and others arranged in three-stone arches — stand around the chamber.

Six low stone slabs are set against the walls around the perimeter of the room. Each holds humanoid bones, dressed in scraps of tattered cloth and rusted iron.

A sound like boots on crumbling rock echos from somewhere in the middle of the large chamber.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Dweeble looked around the massive room with her wide eyes as they entered, her lips pulling open into a wide 'O' as she took in the variety of stone structures and, what she guessed, were tables around the room.  Why someone would put skeletons on them she wasn't sure.  Then again, she preferred to eat at tables anyways.  She spoke the command word of her dagger, removing the light.

As the sound of boots moving in the center of the chamber reached her ears, she did exactly what most anyone would expect.  She sought cover.  She sprinted forward immediately, the cloth covering her otherwise bare soles keeping her scuffling feet quiet.  She came to a rather large pile of stone and quickly leapt into the air.  With her fingers still gripped tight on the hilt of her shiny dagger, she couldn't climb.  So instead, she jumped and flipped, doing her best to avoid the jagged cover as she motioned for the others to follow suit.  After all, hiding always worked, right?

Move to CU38 or as close as she can to get to it.  Let me know if you want an Athletics check for the jump instead.

Ugh. After the necromancer's caverns, the sight of the skeletons sent a chill down Mayon's spine and he glanced over at Bram briefly, remembering the man's ability to detect the undead.

Hearing the footsteps, he follows the halfling woman's lead and ducks down behind the rocks to try and avoid detection...though, clumsy on his feet, he's far from successful

Moving to around CT38 to try and hide behind the outcropping, but...

Jak looked a bit wide-eyed as he saw the stones all set up standing and in arches and....wait...is that a lantern just set down in the middle of the room on the floor? His eyes narrowed and darted back and forth. That certainly wasn't suspicious at all.

He stepped in to the room quietly and looked around a bit more, and tried to see what was going on in the center of the room without getting too close.

Jak and Asano both hear a few pebbles tumble onto the ground. It's difficult to see through the forest of rocks, but from the sound it seems like they may have come loose from one of the pillars near the center of the room.

Map updated. Note the areas of grey on the map that signify rock pillars/formations. It sounds like the pebbles fell somewhere near DC33.

Let's move to initiative now, just in case things escalate... ;)

Morg and Bram haven't posted yet since entering the room, so if you two want to take the equivalent of two turns that's fine.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Not bothering to wait for the others, Dweeble began to search in the stone pillar for handholds.  She slid her dagger in cracks above her and began using it to lift herself up, climbing over the terrain to get a proper vantage point.  She could stay low on top and get some kind of information on the room, at least.  Someone was in those boots after all, right?

Before she'd gotten far, she peaked around the corner and looked at Mayon.  Her brow was furled in confusion as she tilted her head.  She tried to think of some way that would be at least slightly more intelligent to ask her question.  Ultimately, the words spilled forth in a rushed whisper.  "Hey, Mayon!  Do boots walk themselves?"  She waited for his answer before quickly turning back to her initial goal in climbing the stone before her.

Move to CV39 or as close as possible.  She's going to do her best to stay low and quiet while doing so.

An uneasiness comes over Bramwell at the sight of the skeletons laid out upon slabs, after the experience at Lance Rock Cave.  He adjusts his spectacles and peers into the gloom, then opines, "This could perhaps be an ancient burial chamber for the dwarves who once dwelled in this stronghold, but since we have seen necromancy afoot we can never be too certain.  I shall investigate."  The Glyphscribe advances cautiously forth with gleaming driftglobe held aloft, then casts his divine sight outward in search of any sign of necromantic corruption.

Bram detects no presence of celestial, fiend, or undead.

Morg's shout echos from the four corners of the large room.

A low voice replies in its wake. "The stones of this room vibrate with your presence," the deep voice rumbles. It seems to come from somewhere near the sound of the falling pebbles. "The very earth beneath your feet thirsts for your blood. And it will have it. Prostrate yourselves."

Jak nearly jumped out of his skin when Morg suddenly, and for no apparent reason that Jak could see, let out a loud yell! He whirled and opened his mouth to admonish the loud dwarf when a different voice spoke up in a creepy fashion. Jak cringed slightly. Unpleasant!

"No? I'm gonna go with no. Come on out an' show me how it's done, I'll think about it." He tried to put confidence into his voice that he normally felt.

He readied an attack if something came out of the stones.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

"There are no undead here that I can find..." Bram reports just before Morg shouts out and an ominous rumbling voice responds from somewhere further in.

His immediate reaction was to investigate the insensible claim that the stones were somehow thirsty for blood.  Stone is nonliving and thus not in need of hydration, of course, but he suspected those words may have been intended as a metaphorical threat rather than a factual claim.  Nonetheless, he peered closely at the stone floor as well as the nearby slab to check for any magical or structural features that might pose a danger.

He then called out a response to the voice, "You're quite mad if you presume we'll surrender on the basis of your bizarre delusions!  Who are you and what is it that you want?"

  • 14 Arcana to check nearby stone for any unusual/dangerous features.  It's the same modifier for any other Int-based knowledge check, or a total of 10 if Perception is what's needed.
  • If anything is detected, 8 Investigation to misunderstand how it works :)
  • Move to CY35, but if some treacherous terrain feature is detected then I'll reserve the right to move differently!
  • Bram's driftglobe is still shedding a 20 foot radius of bright light and an additional 20 feet of dim light, in case it's relevant.
  • If an ally adjacent to me is attacked by a creature I can see, use my reaction to impose disadvantage with Protection fighting style

18:49, Today: Secret Roll: Bramwell Caulder rolled 14 using 1d20+4.  Arcana.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Bram moves near the center of the room, near the lantern. With his driftglobe hovering nearby, the two light sources cast double shadows around the room. From his vantage point the paladin sees several sconces bearing lit torches around the back walls of the room.

Mid round update! Assume bright light in the whole chamber.

Jak, you should update your post to include what the readied attack is, and any rolls if appropriate.

Bram doesn't notice anything odd or dangerous about the stones - they vary in height from about 7-15 feet tall.

Mayon, you still have Mage Armor active from when you all entered the tunnels, so you may want to do something else. Also note your turn will happen after ???'s in the initiative order.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Dweeble inches forward across the top of the stone arch, her hands still clutching her daggers in an iron grip as she slowly lifts her head to peer down into the interior of the room.  Her ears perk up as her eyes scan the room, searching for whoever was making the noises.  "These boots aren't walking themselves, no sir.  Obviously they got a person in 'em!"  Her thoughts had turned back inward as her wide, blue orbs searched.

She set her ordinary dagger down on top of the stone next to her and reached back into the pack she wore on her shoulders.  Rather than dive into the main vessel, her fingers slid into a side pouch and came away with a flask of oil.  She silently cursed herself for not getting a torch from Morg but perhaps he'd get the memo if she found something to douse in the flammable liquid.

Move:  Only moving if needed to see what's on the floor of the room in front of the terrain that Dweeble is on top of.

Readied action:  If the thing making noise is obviously hostile, or spooky enough to alarm Dweeble, she's going to throw the flask of oil at it.  I rolled with advantage assuming it's from stealth.  She only throws the flask if the enemy is within 20 feet.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Morg runs towards the low voice, looking to go knock it down.
If he sees an enemy and can reach melee range, he'll move up to it and attack with his warhammer. If an enemy's more than 25' away, he'll attack with a javelin instead after trying to move to within 10'-25' of it.

If he doesn't see an enemy, he'll try to kick some pebbles on the floor towards where he thinks the voice came from to see if it hits anything invisible, while moving 25' to CY38, and readying a javelin attack against any enemies.

Re: Day 5 - Early Risers

Morg moves farther into the room, and the group tenses for what might happen next. Moments tick by as heads turn slowly this way and that, squinting into shadows.

Abruptly a man clad in dun-colored armor rounds the corner of the rock. Shockingly, he appears to be standing a full seven feet in the air, the tip of his boot barely touching the vertical edge of the rock. He glances calmly at the assembled intruders, then raises his arms. "Let the earth's embrace welcome you to death," he says almost conversationally. He begins casting a spell.

Morg casts his javelin in the air, which sticks in the man's side briefly. Though the projectile struck him soundly, it curiously clatters to the stone floor without making a significant gash through the man's armor. Dwee tosses a flask of oil at the figure, which shatters and drenches him in oil. Jak makes a nasty remark about the man's mother. He lets all of the attacks wash over him, then finishes his spell.

An ear splitting crack splits the air between Bram and Morg. Rock dust fills the air and pebbles rain down on them. A large chunk of rock behind Bram splits off, then falls heavily to the floor. Echos of the wave of sound reverberate off the walls of the chamber.

Instantly the floor vibrates briefly and all of the stone pillars in the room lurch off the floor and begin levitating, leaving just less than an inch of open air between them and the ground. As the dust clears, the man ducks back behind the rock out of sight.

Map updated. All of the grey areas outlined in red on the map denote rocks that are levitating.

Mayon is up now, and Asano can also post. Bram and Morg, please make con saves & post results for the spell attack.

Let's call him "L" =) - L pops around the corner, 7' up on the rock at DD37. Morg's attack triggers - javelin HITS for 10 piercing, halved to 5. Dwee's attack triggers - HITS - L is covered in oil. Jak's attack triggers - HIT for 2 psychic. ??? has disadvantage on the next attack roll before the EoNT.

L succeeds on two con saves for concentration. He casts shatter on the point between CY36 & CY37 - Bram and Morg in area of effect & must make Con saves - they take 16 thunder damage, half on successful save. L retreats behind the rock, towards DE34-36 - you can't tell exactly where he went since you don't have line of sight.

Mayon's eyes widen at the sight of the man, and then narrow icily as he remembers his dream and his patron's cold whispering. This is not good.

"Try and leave him in one piece. He knows Marlos and I have questions for him." He calls out, hoping they remember the earlier discussion about the man and darting over to duck behind the rocks closer to Bram. He begins struggling to climb to a better vantage point, but without much luck and much frustration.

Dweeble's eyes screwed shut as the thunderclap rang out through the room.  By the time she opened them, the oil-covered character was already moving.  She frowned as he retreated behind one of the further stones.  Turning to tell Morg to hit the man with a torch, she kept quiet as she noticed Mayon struggling with the stone.  "Dwarves are smart.  He'll figure it out!"  Quickly grabbing the dagger she'd dropped on top of the stone arch next to her, she stood up and ran across the top of her previous cover.  Without much effort, she vaulted the distance between the nearest stone and dropped down above Mayon.

Dropping her mundane dagger again, the halfling looked down at Mayon, a bright smile on her face.  "Need a hand?  Or a hin?  Also who's Marlos?"  Her pale, dirty fingers reached out for his hand.  Either she wasn't worried about the floating stones or she simply hadn't noticed the light bit of levitation.
