Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Though the sun did not rise in the cave beneath the earth, the group feels that the night is past. The moist air in the cave seems leaves all clothing and equipment damp as the group rouses for a new day.

Long Rest Complete! Feel free to refill all consumables, roll for magic item recharges, change spells, etc. as applicable.

Day 9 - Underground Rescue

"I feel much better from those mushrooms," Morg says to Jak, Asano, and Fin holding out some for them, "tho just being underground again is also good."

"So, the natural tunnel, and left to the temple. There show the hand sign, beyond the columned chamber take the 1st right, and 1st left into the cellblock. Should Mag and I walk in front?"

"Once we act, we act quickly and decisively. Free the fire dwarves and my brother, then flee." Findarion says, stretching, preparing for what comes next. He seemed impatient throughout their stay in the cave, but respected the others' need to rest.

Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak hesitated and then shrugged. "I mean...just realize that whoever's in front's likely t'be the one doin' the talkin'. I'm fine with whatever, so long as we have a plan an' room t'deviate an' improvise as normal as needed." He grinned widely.

He ate some of the mushrooms since the others seemed to not be suffering any side effects immediately visible and seemed to think they were tasty.

Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The group leaves the shelter of the hidden cavern, refreshed from their rest. Jak finds the mushrooms nourishing, though not an invigorating as the others did.

Following Greaek's directions, the group turns left back into the natural tunnel leading down. Abruptly the tunnel walls shift to that of worked stone. The ceiling rises to a height of about fifteen feet. Magdrak and Morg easily recognize dwarven stonework.

The passage narrows ahead near what looks like a large arrow slit in the south wall. Flickering light ahead casts shadows on the passage walls. The stale air in the corridor smells of ash.

Morg earns Inspiration for completing one part of his "secret mission", discovering one of the ancient dwarven strongholds on his map!

New map: Temple of Eternal Flame

I'm assuming someone has cast Light for those without darkvision, or perhaps Jak has activated his driftglobe?

Findarion notes he has 5 arrows remaining in his quiver as you all leave the cave.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak did indeed activate the driftglobe that has been passed around some of the party members - quietly whispering a command word after pulling the small sphere of glass out. The globe began to emanate light, and Jak held it in his hand. He could have it float and even follow him, but it was too easy to lose that way.

He looked around as they walked along, letting Morg and Magdrak take the lead if they wished to do the talking.

Morg slips past the unmanned arrow slit and sees that the passage widens just beyond it. Two large alcoves flank the hallway. Loose piles of stone form makeshift barricades at the front of each alcove, angled to defend against intrusion from the west. A path between the barricades leads to a wide, descending staircase to the east.

A company of hobgoblin guards stand around the stairs, looking bored until Morg rounds the corner. "You there, dwarf! What are you about?" the large captain barks from the foot of the stairs.

Jak followed suit, not knowing better, and made the hand signal as well as he continued to follow after Morg. He restrained the natural urge to smile at the hobgoblins, thinking it might not go over well.

He made the sign of the Eternal Flame as they walked closer. "Priestess Lytin sent us from outside to bring a prisoner out for the ritual." He smiled slightly. "I think they will be...participating a bit unwillingly."

Jak let out a small sigh of relief. The lie hadn't worked on the group upstairs either, really, and so he was pleasantly surprised when they were let past....though he wondered at a trap or something up ahead. It seemed...too easy, and very little had been easy for them of late. But he followed along nonetheless.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The hobgoblin eyes the group warily, but leads them past the rubble-strewn room and down the stairs beyond. The hall widens to form a domed chamber supported by four obsidian columns laced with fiery cracks. Wall sconces hold torches lit with dancing flames, and the smoky air is oppressively warm.

Suddenly a form moves away from one of the walls, carrying an enormously long spear whose tip burns as brightly as one of the torches. Clad in metal armor, the overlapping plates of steel seem to meet at lines of molten metal, giving it the marbled appearance of unevenly melting iron. A bright orb embedded in the chest piece flares with its own light, illuminating a hard face under a heavy helm and circular goggles. As it approaches, a similarly clad figure shifts in its place on the south wall.

"And who are these?" the figure asks imperiously, turning her implacable gaze to Squelch.

"I don't know," the hobgoblin shrugs, "they showed the sign, the boss told me to bring them down. Can I go?" The guard seems uncomfortable in the heat of the chamber, and sweat trickles down his forehead.

The figure motions the hobgoblin away in an arrogant dismissal, then turns to the new arrivals. "Well?" she asks impatiently. The hobgoblin turns to go back up the stairs.

He turns to the others behind him momentarily as he asks the question, then turns back to the armored figure.  "But if you need permission from someone else, fine by me.  Just let us know so we can get out of here quickly...  So I can tell Lytin, assuming she doesn't just burn me to a cinder for failing.  You ARE fireproof, right?  When that big elemental comes storming in here carrying his master's wrath, won't be no problems for you?  All in a day's work?"

He pauses for a few seconds.  "Just out of curiosity, who ranks higher?  Lytin or ... what was your girl's name again?  Vanifer?"

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The woman slowly turns her head to face Magdrak, her goggled gaze seemingly boring a hole through the dwarf's skull.

Raising a hand to her face, she slowly lifts the goggles from her face. In place of eyes, two glowing orbs of red flame blaze out of blackened eye sockets as she stares down at Magdrak with malevolence. "You moron. Some simple priestess of Elizar's sent you in here to fetch a prisoner, and you think that you can fling around threats of fire elementals? My heart burns already," she says, touching the flaming orb in her chest for emphasis. "No fire can touch what I have already given to the flames willingly. I am already purified."

She replaces the goggles and turns to her companion. "I'll escort these worms to Vanifer. If they do not know the name of the Prophet of the Cult of the Eternal Flame, then they shall." The man nods calmly, lowering the spear from Morg's chest.

Motioning for them to follow her, she starts walking down the hallway.

The razerblast leads the group to a crossing corridor that heads south. The wide hallway stretches arrow straight, with guttering torches illuminating the way at regular intervals. A fair amount of noise can be heard at the end of the hall. The goggled woman motions for the group to proceed toward the stairs at the far end.

A narrower, darker corridor continues to the east, with what look like dark alcoves along either side.

Hissing with hatred from behind Morg's hand, the Razerblast swings its flaming spear around, stabbing multiple times at her assailants.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The razerblast swoons from the assault. Her armor's flaming orb flares as bits of the metal are chipped off from the blows. With one arm she tries to claw at Morg to fling him off of her; with the other, she stabs out wildly at her attackers, snarling wordlessly.

The clamor of the struggle seems to be drowned out by the loud noise of clanging metal down the stairs to the south, at least for the moment, as no one appears from either end of the long hallway.

No map update needed yet.

Everyone is up now! As before, I posted R1's next action for expediency. If something Findarion does changes things I'll let you know & tweak her post.

Morg, note you have a contested roll to make vs. an attempted shove - Athletics or Acrobatics.

Round 2 Summary:

Findarion attacks R1 - HIT for 15 piercing.

R1 attacks three times, one each vs. Morg (at Disadvantage), Magdrak, and Findarion - MISS.

Wiglaf attacks R1 with halberd - HIT for 13 slashing and 3 necrotic. He uses bonus action to attack with butt of halberd - MISS.

Jak casts Vicious Mockery on R1 - FAILS save, takes 2 psychic. R1 has disadvantage on their next attack.

Asano casts Chill Touch on R1 - HIT for 4 necrotic (Findarion is correct that Twinned Spell requires 2 separate targets, so you would not be able to spend a sorcery point on this for a second attack). R1 takes 1 P Force psychic.

Magdrak casts Hunter's Mark on R1, then attacks - HIT for 12 bludgeoning.

Morg attacks R1 with war pick & Precision Attack - HIT for 7 piercing. He uses Action Surge & Precision Attack to attack again - HIT for 12 piercing. Morg takes 3 fire .

Round 3 So Far:

R1 attempts to Shove Morg out of the grapple using an Athletics check (at Disadvantage) - 7. If successful, Morg is thrown to AM18. She attacks Findarion (at disadvantage) & Magdrak - MISS.

Still beset by attackers on all sides, the razerblast struggles to the last. Magdrak's hammer comes down upon her head, and she slumps to the floor.

A split second later an ear-shattering roar rocks the hallway, as the fiery gem in the center of the razerblast's armor explodes. Flame and shrapnel fly in all directions. Wiglaf stumbles, putting out small fires on the remains of his mercentary uniform, and he leans against the rock wall of the passageway for support.

Jak moves forward and attacks R1 - HIT for 7 piercing.

Asano does nothing. R1 takes 2 psychic.

Magdrak attacks R1 - HIT for 11 bludgeoning. R1 is dead. R1 explodes. Wiglaf, Findarion, Magdrak, Jak, and Morg must make a DC 12 Dex save or take 25 fire (12 with a successful save). Wiglaf saves, and makes concentration save.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The remains of the razerblast and her armor lie scattered about the corridor, and a scorch mark mars the floor and wall near where she died. Despite the loud explosion however, no Temple denizens appear to investigate. The loud clanging to the south continues.

Findarion's spell bends the light around him strangely, and his form merges into the wall behind him. He is effectively invisible, as long as he stands near the wall. Picking his way north, Findarion makes his way around the corner to a corridor heading east. The hallway is dark, with niches lining both sides of the hall. Within each niche stands a shadowy figure, perhaps intended to be a dwarf, carved from stone.

Looking down, Findarion catches a slight reflection of light near the ground. A taut wire stretches across the hallway between the two western-most niches, about five feet from where he stands.

While Findarion heads north back up the corridor, the rest of the group moves on south. As they approach the stairs, the room below comes into view.

Noise, light, and heat issue from the massive chamber. Runnels of lava flow from holes in the west wall into bronze troughs. Heat shimmers; smoke and steam rise toward the domed ceiling, escaping through vents. Another staircase rises on the far end of the room, leading to a crossing corridor.

Inside the room, a massive red-skinned form stands near four large forges, towering over the other occupants of the room and seemingly unaffected by the heat radiating from the nearby lava. Several fire-bearded and bronze-skinned dwarfs work the forges, hammering molten iron and steel. They are clearly of the same race as Greaek. At the far end of the chamber a massive flame-colored snake also works a forge, its huge body coiled so its limbs can reach high enough to work the metal. The towering red-skinned form and several other human-sized figures watch over the workers, and do not look up at the group near the top of the stairs.

Looking right, the group sees another set of stairs extends west and a corridor beyond bends to the north. In the other direction, a long passage to the east is broken at regular intervals by doors spaced about fifteen feet apart along the north and south walls. Many of the doors are secured from the outside with hasp-and-pin mechanisms.

Map updated!

Anyone can make an arcana check to see if you know what the large red-skinned figure or the snake are.

Findarion is concentrating on Silent Image - you should make a stealth check with advantage. There's not much hope of hiding the explosion of the razerblast, but you all think maybe the din coming from the room to the south covered up the noise?

He stepped up to peer in to the new room...a massive room with forges and strange creatures, and more of the fiery dwarves. Map updated!

Jak: You're able to identify the large red figure & the coiled snake as an Efreeti and a Salamander respectively. This also triggers a memory of Azers, the name for the fire-bearded dwarfs, and how Salamanders, Azers, and Efreeti all hail from the Elemental Plane of Fire. There's something about Efreeti enslaving both Azers and Salamanders, and Azers & Salamanders disliking each other, but you forget the details. I'm assuming the party all learns this one way or another - folks can make their own Arcana checks to see if they know more info than Jak shares.

You also know Salamanders are very dangerous, and Efreeti are incredibly powerful beings. But that's likely apparent to all at a glance ;)

Morg: You think the Azers and Salamanders definitely look like prisoners.

All of the doors on the cells are closed and don't have windows. The 4 western-most doors (2 on the north wall and 2 on the south) are not locked from the outside, but the rest of the doors down the corridor to the east have hasp-and-pin mechanisms on the outside & look easy to undo.

Nothing comes from the west towards Findarion. Other than the taut wire, nothing else seems amiss, and proceeding east seems safe. Make perception check(s) if you wish to look for anything else if you proceed down the eastern corridor.

Magdrak listens at one of the western-most doors, but can hear nothing above the din from the forge to the south.

Morg opens the first of the cells and finds a giant salamander, hissing as the door swings open.

Opening the door across the hall, he finds two azers, calmly sitting in the center of the small room. They look at each other, then one says something to Morg in a harsh language he doesn't understand, presumably Ignan. The azer's voice has a questioning tone.

Moving on to the other cells, two more salamanders hiss and spit at Morg's appearance, though none of them actively attack. He finds four more azers in the next two cells, both looking eager to leave.

Behind the final cell door, Morg finds a bedraggled high elf, clad in rags but otherwise looking in fair health. "Are you one of those fire cult bastards?" he asks in a raspy voice.

As Morg opens the rest of the doors, the first two azers and the first salamander exit their cells, then immediately start barking at each other in Ignan.

As he hears the barking prisoners, he walks out into the hallway standing between the snake people and the fire beards, handing out weapons: his war pick, warhammer, one spear, one handaxe, and a mining pick to azer; and a handaxe and a normal hammer to the salamanders.

The elf accepts the weapon from Morg, holding it awkwardly with three fingers, point down.

"Fin? Findarion? Did that lout send you?" The elf pauses, perhaps realizing how ungrateful that sounded. "Yes, I am Merellien Aur'aver," the elf says in a slightly less condescending tone. He gathers himself and stands up slightly taller and straighter than before. "Will you all be escorting me out of here then?"

The salamanders and azers continue to eye each other askance as they start gathering in the now cramped corridor, but they all accept the weapons proffered from the dwarf readily.

When the weapons were all handed out, the whole group looks at each other awkwardly for a beat, and looks to Morg and the others to see what they will do next.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

"Aye, we'll try to help get you out of here." Morg says to Merellien.

To Magdrak he says "Here's hoping they're angrier at their enslavers than each other. I don't know if they want to get to ground level - in which case we could try to organize for them to attack the hobgoblins and the other exploding thing from this side after we've passed; or if they want to find some portal to the plane of fire by going down."
Waiting to hear if any of the prisoners speak Common.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak makes his way out of the crowded prison corridor, and begins retracing their steps back north.

Merellien nods wearily, half in relief, half expecting the answer. "Lead on then," he says, waving the dagger loosely in the direction of opposite end of the corridor.

The salamanders and azers both look dumbfounded at the group speaking Common to each other, though several of the azers look up at Morg each time he speaks Greaek's name. As the party seems to be ready to move out, they quiet down and look hesitantly towards the sounds of the forge.

Findarion's dagger sticks upright in between two ancient flagstones. The quivering handle vibrates the translucent wire strung across the corridor. Out of the corner of his eye, Findarion sees a flicker of movement. Did the greataxe held by the nearby stone dwarf statue twitch?

"Shall we go back up, and have them follow us at a distance?" Morg asks Magdrak, Asano, and Wiglaf.

"We could try to act like we belong here, and take Fin's brother with us as if he's a prisoner - past the hobgoblins. Once past, the fire dwarves and salamanders could attack from the east side while we attack from the west. The forge noise probably won't alert the big efreeti, tho if it shows up we could just make a run for it."

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak kept a weather eye out for Findarion, since the jerk elf had left them to go do....something....while the rest of the group went and rescued HIS BROTHER!! The whole reason they even ENTERED the tower. Well...that wasn't entirely true. Jak would have wanted to enter the tower anyway but could have persuaded otherwise by the group if not for the imprisoned brother of Findarion.

He smirked and shook his head. Sounded like something he would do. He moved northward more to see if he could find the missing elf.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

The group starts to move cautiously back the way they came, up the north facing corridor. No movement stirs as they round the corner to the right - no temple-dwellers, yet also no sign of Findarion.

Behind them both the azers and salamanders follow until they reach the top of the stairs. As they gaze down upon the foundry, suddenly both groups erupt into shouts in the harsh Ignan tongue. Answering shouts erupt from below, and suddenly the clamor of metal on metal is replaced by steel on steel as the group of freed prisoners attack their slavers. The noise to the south is deafening as fiery blazes detonate and echo off stone walls.

"This isn't much of a rescue," Merellien declaims pompously as he glances dubiously around at the remaining group.

The group moves back towards the way they had come, skirting around the columns in now-empty room and climbing the stairs guarded by the party of hobgoblins. "Well, that was quite the ordeal," Merellien offers to his rescuers. "I assume I should now assume command of this group? I believe I am the highest ranking noble among you."

"Long, FACINating story," Merellien replies, awkwardly replacing his dagger in his empty belt sheath.

He goes on to describe a visit to a village within the family's land holdings that he had visited, shortly after a falconry outing. Shortly after his arrival the town was besieged by fire cultists. Hellhounds rampaged through the village and cruel fire cultists captured anyone of importance. The commoners they slew, along with Merellien's own retinue.

He and the other prisoners were marched back to the above-ground camp for a time. He noticed another group of prisoners briefly in other parts of the camp, but wasn't able to interact with them at all. A few days ago he was transferred below ground to the temple here.

Findarion has no idea whatsoever which tunnel leads back to the surface =).

Jak leads the way back through the natural tunnels, occasionally looking back to ensure they're retracing their steps accurately.

Merellien silently hands the dagger back to Morg, a sour look on his face from Magdrak's comment.

Just as the group is about to approach another natural branch in the tunnels, the echoing footfalls of some group of what sounds like beasts becomes audible. Jak is fairly sure that the noise is coming from the tunnel leading back up to the fire cult's tower on the hill, though there are two other tunnels leading from this junction.

Asano believes Merellien is a noble, possibly from one of the houses of High Elves that dwell deep in the High Forest near his hometown of Triarbor.

Merellien sneezes, loudly.

Finally the hellhound paws at the wall and, finding nothing there to slow its forward movement, stumbles forward through the plane of the illusion. Immediately Findarion's bow twangs, and an arrow blooms from the beast's forehead. Fumbling for another arrow, the elf realizes his quiver only contains another 4 arrows.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Asano coughs, slumping against the wall at his side. Slowly, the half-elf begins walking backward through the hall. As he goes, he makes a few motions with his focusing wand and a small handful of razor snowflakes shoot from the crystal. The small missiles slam into the hellhound from alternating sides. Asano grows larger and larger, his form magically augmented by the very Weave that is his strength.

The gout of flame envelops Findarion. As he frantically puts out the fire on his cape, the illusion fades away.

The rogue takes out the magical dagger and stabs the hellhound from the side before retreating behind the two sturdier dwarves.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak opened his mouth to hurl an insult at the hellhound and then it breathed fire on him. The heat and flame washed over him, burning him badly. He staggered back from the beast, screaming silently, all the air in his lungs evaporated by the heat. His skin was blackened and charred as he stumbled to one knee in pain.

Shaking, he tapped one note on the drum, a dull thud devoid of any joy or musical note, and the motion clearly paining him. Through gritted teeth he spoke a singular word, barely audible through his cracked and bleeding lips, imbued with arcane will, "heal."

And some of his wounds began to repair themselves. He glared at the hellhound and through his grit teeth he menacingly spat out the words, "BAD. DOG."

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Wiglaf shifts his form with a strangled cry, and suddenly a wolf stands where the ragged man once did. Merellien shrinks back, moving several feet down the tunnel, away from the wolf.

The wolf darts between the rest of the party, passing Findarion as he retreats, and rips a large gash out of the right side of the hellhound, to match the nasty wound from Reszur in the hellhound's left flank. At Jak's harsh words the beast whimpers, laying its beastly head between its oversized paws, and is still. The arrow still projects at an angle from the beast's skull.

Wiglaf remains near the beast, a low growl sounding in his throat. "You're keeping company with a we-werewo-wolf?" he says disbelievingly. "You've grown even more insane in your time away from the family Findarion!"

Map updated!

Since the hellhound died before Asano, Magdrak, and Morg's turns, we can retcon that you didn't take those actions you posted & you retain any resources spent (e.g., spell slots) with those posts.

We're (temporarily?) out of initiative - what would you like to do now?

Round 1 Summary:

Hellhound(s)
H2 uses fire breath - Jak & Asano  take 22 fire; Findarion  & Magdrak  take 11 fire.

Findarion moves and attacks H2 with Booming Blade - HIT for 8 piercing. He then disengages and moves back. H2 takes d8 thunder if he moves before the start of Fin's next turn.

Wiglaf saves vs. lycanthropy - FAIL. Wiglaf turns into a wolf. He moves and attacks H2 - CRIT for 11 piercing.

Jak casts Healing Word and regains 11 hp . He casts Vicious Mockery on H2 - FAIL. H2 takes 4 psychic. H2 is dead.

"Yes, well, beggars can't be choosers," Asano says weakly. "I suggest we make our way out of here, quickly. Those howls must have been heard, even with how much they would echo through these tunnels. Let's move, everyone." He speaks with the quiet authority of one born to power, his tone confident in the obedience of the group. Besides, its good sense.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak looked over at Asano and gave a small nod. Not only that he was agreeing with the words, but more than that, as the pain in himself subsided, he noted that the sorcerer too had been gravely wounded by the hellhound's breath of fire.

He spoke a word, the same word again, imbued with arcane energies once more. "Heal." Cooling energy washed over some of Asano's burns, causing the flesh to heal.

He then pushed himself off of the wall and began to keep going back the way they came to the entrance, assuming another hellhound wasn't coming towards them in sight.

OOC: Asano regains 7 hit points.

23:16, Today: Jakrynn Redgate rolled 7 using 1d4+4 with rolls of 3.  Healing Word, level 1, on Asano.

Merellien gives Findarion a withering look but says nothing. His attention is distracted by his wary attention to the wolf in their midst.

As the group moves carefully to reach the crossing tunnel, Jak and Morg see two gleaming red eyes approaching swiftly, just outside the glow from Jak's glowglobe.

Wiglaf, still in a canine form, feels his hackles rise. A low growl ends in a snarl as he flexes his legs, preparing to leap at the approaching beast.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak and Findarion quickly ascend the rope, assisting Merellien when he slips. The elf curses and mutters about rope burns but finally reaches the top. Morg and Magdrak follow, and Wiglaf quickly pulls himself up last.

At the top, Greaek regards them silently. When the finally all reach the top, he speaks quietly, his rumbling voice grating like stone on stone. "The guards are all outside, repairing the damage you all caused yesterday and looking for you. So before I call them and tell them you're here, where are my kin?"

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak waited, mostly patiently, for everyone to climb up and then nodded to Greaek. "So, yeah, we freed ALL the prisoners in the cells. There were your kin, there were some...salamanders? We tried to tell them you sent us and we were escaping, but they didn't seem to understand us, I'm guessing the hissing stuff was a language I don't understand." He shrugged and continued on. "Anyway, along the way back they caught sight of the forge area, and ran in there yelling and starting a ruckus."

He shook his head. "I mean, we're capable, but there was like a fire genie there and a huge salamander and that was more then we could take on, so we came back here to let you know."

OOC: Poop. I was typing in "Persuasion roll if needed" but hit enter accidentally and it rolled. Sigh. Anyway - Jak isn't trying to lie, he's telling the truth as he saw it (which I think is mostly what happened, skipping the hellhounds and such).

Peering out into the muggy sunshine, Jak sees a number of guards and workers hammering on replacement beams for the wooden scaffolding below.

The sharp call of a bird pierces the still air, calling from above, then echos once again off the hillside. The bird sounds stationary, perhaps as if it were at the top of the tower's spire above.

As the others discuss leaving the tower and descending to the ground outside, Jak slips up the stairs that hug the tower's northern wall.

Emerging from below, Jak sees the room above has about a dozen bedrolls scattered across the floor. Three of the bedrolls look to be occupied by sleeping cultists. In the far corner, a small pile of someone's belongings sits next to some discarded clothing. The stone stairs continue upward along the inside of the wall.

Findarion falls on top of his brother, and they both collapse into a heap of arms and legs. One guard plummets to the basement, surrounded by magmins. Both the priest and Findarion lay still.

Charging down the still-intact stairs, Wiglaf bites and claws at the remaining guard on this level just as he cuts down Morg.

Wiglaf bites the guard again, and the man cries out as the werewolf's jaws rip through his light sleeping clothes. Splinters from the ruined ceiling above continue to rain down. Morg stirs from his position on the floor, groaning in pain.

<DM post>

Morg gets "modified inspiration" and rolls an auto-20 on his first death save - this is for the "Flydragon" comment and for accurately RPing his personality of bluntly speaking what others might have wanted to hide. ;)

Morg begins his turn this round conscious and prone.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Morg cuts down the guard, who lies motionless on the floor amid the ruins of the ceiling.

"Greaek," the other guard calls from the floor below, "lower the rope! Burn you, do something useful!" Greaek rolls his eyes and does nothing.

Just then another voice speaks from the stairway above. "Hold." An older man in robes descends the wooden steps carefully to the remains of the floor above, and gazes down at the assembled group and the Azer. Puffing from a pipe held lazily in his left hand, he regards Greaek with a piercing gaze. "My guards are no lambs to be led to slaughter. Let him remain there for the present."

The man's piercing gaze turns to the rest of the group, lingering on Merellien's face a few seconds before taking in everyone else. Merellien's face drains of color, then he returns to examining his brother, softly shaking him and encouraging him to wake. "So," he begins again, "did you come here to destroy my elemental, or to rescue this man? Or both," he puts in at the end, as if the thought just occurred that both possibilities might be true, and he takes another puff from his pipe.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Jak let out a small sigh. He really wished, and not for the first time, that the clerics that traveled with them would stick around. He only had one healing spell and it wasn't that great of one, more of a stopgap measure. Healing wasn't his forte really after all.

He looked at Findarion for a moment as if weighing something in his mind, but then he chuckled and spat out the arcane-infused word, "Heal!" Warm energy jumped to the elven body and some of the wounds started to close up.

He glanced at the robed figure that had come down. "We're equal opportunity sorts o'people. We saw people bein' killed, didn't seem like the elemental would stop here, so we stopped it." He nodded to the two elves. "This one's brother was bein' held here so we broke him out." He didn't say it, but he thought it hard that 'many others may have escaped at the same time somehow'.

12:11, Today: Jakrynn Redgate rolled 8 using 1d4+4 with rolls of 4.  Healing Word on Findarion.

"Interesting," the man muses over a long puff on his pipe. He exhales and lets the smoke curl around his head like a halo.

"I am in fact Elizar Dryflagon, my little dwarf. "But what makes you and your friends think our organization here is killing and enslaving innocents? This one," he motions lazily to Merellien with the stem of his pipe, "is - was -  a prisoner for withholding his wealth from the common people. The Rite of the Wicker Giant called forth an effigy of purity that would have burned the evil from this world. Even the 'slaves' as you call them, in the Temple below, were serving the greater good in their own way." He ponders Greaek for a moment. "Did Greaek put you up to freeing them?"

Elizar tsks as he takes another long draw from this pipe. "I fear you've made a terrible mistake. Won't you let me tell you a bit more about our little group? I think you could be persuaded to join our cause after a little time."

You're in no condition to take on all of my followers in your current condition, not even after you defeated so many before." A brief scowl crosses the man's face, then is replaced with almost kindly serenity again.

"Would you consider remaining with me and my followers if I were to, say, cure your friend here of his peculiar affliction?" Elizar smiles knowingly at Wiglaf. The werewolf's eyes widen in sudden comprehension, then indecision and conflict war with each other across his face. He says nothing. "I would not require such onerous burdens on you as you seem to imagine," Elizar continues. Greaek scowls, but like Wiglaf he remains silent.

Jak opened his mouth and then immediately bit his lip to keep from speaking. It would be unkind of him to say that Wiglaf wasn't his friend. He'd only recently met Wiglaf and he was Magdrak's friend. Magdrak...whom Jak had known a bit longer than Wiglaf, by a matter of hours if he remembered correctly. But lycanthropy was a disease and not a good one. On the other hand, Wiglaf could be likely have his curse removed by a different priest elsewhere.

He smiled and shook his head. "Oh, I think you may underestimate how many followers you'd lose in that fight."

He frowned and looked to Wiglaf and Magdrak. "If you want t'hear him out, then we can, but I'll say this - he's not gonna be the only one that can cure you if that's what you want." He didn't know that for certain, but he said with confidence anyway.

Wiglaf locks eyes for several moments, staring up at him with an almost plaintive yearning. Yet finally he reluctantly shakes his head. "No. I've seen what a life of subservience brings you. I'll not sign up for that."

Elizar shrugs suddenly, then rises. "Very well. You've chosen I suppose. But I can't have you all running around my camp raising more havoc."

Drawing a long breath through his smoking pipe, he exhales into the air above the gaping hole in the second floor. Coalescing as it descends, the smoke lands on the first floor and forms into the shape of four small, winged shapes. They immediately move to attack the assembled group as Elizar begins to slowly climb the stairs.

Combined with a savage bite from Wiglaf, the smoke creature nearest them explodes into a thick, dark cloud of boiling smoke. A savage strike from Findarion fells another of the creatures, and it too melts into a dark sphere of roiling black.

Magdrak cuts down the remaining smoke creature, and relative silence descends once more. Of Elizar there is currently no sign, as he disappeared up the stairs to the floor above.

Visible through the hole in the floor, the guardian in the cellar has managed to clear away a decent amount of rubble from in front of the doorway, and is starting in on getting the door unstuck. Magmins caper around him gaily, lighting small bits of furniture and rafters alight by hugging them for a few seconds, then moving on to another bit of flammable debris.

Greaek grumbles about betrayals and eyes the exit outside to the scaffolding, still under repair. Merellien covers his eyes and huddles in the corner, fingering the hilt of his dagger. Wiglaf snorts and looks wildly around the room.

Jak let out a long sigh as the smoke creatures were finally dispatched...but their choices left behind were still terrible. He shook his head. "Well. Not much for it then I guess."

He moved up to the doorway that lead to the scaffolding, leaned forward slightly to peek outside to see if there were more creatures or troops waiting for them.

Re: Day 9 - Underground Rescue

Leaning out the doorway, Jak sees the ruined scaffolding has finally stopped smouldering after some apparent rain at some time of the last few hours. The outside air is slightly chilly, and the clean smell of fresh air after nearly a full day indoors or underground is a welcome sensation, despite the slight tinge of ash that carries up from below.

A few figures move around on the hillside below, but Jak can't make out any details. The unburnt scaffolding remains in place, just a few feet away to the left.

A moment later, Jak against hears a piercing cry from the roof of the tower some distance above.

Jak remains fairly certain that the bird's cry is from Sharpwind.

Jak flinched slightly when he heard Sharpwind crying out again from above. Nothing shot at him and there were no yells of anger or anything forthcoming from anyone else. "Alright. Here goes nothin'." So he squared his shoulders and stepped outside to start trying to make his way up to his friend without getting killed.

OOC: Jak goes out and up. Let me know if you need any rolls or anything.

As Jak climbs, he spots the head of Elizar poke over the edge of the roof. From what Jak can see from his limited angle of sight, the man appears to be fiddling with something. Then another squawk is audible, and the claws of a large bird briefly come into view - Sharpwind. The two appear to be struggling over something near the bird's feet.

Elizar steadies himself on his mount, then swoops around the tower, spying Jak nearing the top. Sawing on the reins, he pulls up on the side of the tower the rogue is climbing, and he regards Morg in the doorway below.

Just as he opens his mouth to shout something, Sharpwind dives sharply, and Elizar yanks on the reins again, trying to get the flying mount back under control.

Jak glared at the strange stupid wizard (or whatever he was) trying to steal his mount. He let out a small growl and leaped off the scaffolding. But he wasn't suicidal. He was just looking for a quicker resolution. It didn't look super graceful. It didn't look beautifully acrobatic...

...but he landed on the back of the hippogriff mount right behind Elizar. "Like I said, Elizard, find your own friend!" Shortsword out and pointy end ready to dig in to the evil cult leader. "Get! Off!"

Morg makes his way quickly out of the tower, carefully climbing sideways on the tower wall until he reaches the top of the remaining scaffolding.

Findarion's arrow strikes Elizar just as he was about to cast a spell at Jak. Instead he turns toward the opening in the tower, and casts another spell. A thick, nauseating cloud of yellow gas springs out of thin air around Findarion, seeping into the tower and the air outside surrounding the doorway.

Sharpwind banks sharply and gives another cry towards Jak, seemingly asking him where to go.

Mid round update! Map updated.

Asano and Jak are up now, and Magdrak can still take his turn also.

Elizar casts Stinking Cloud centered at P92. The area marked on the map is heavily obscured. Each creature that is completely within the cloud at the start of its turn must make a Constitution saving throw against poison (DC 15). On a failed save, the creature spends its action that turn retching and reeling.

Findarion currently has 2 arrows left =).

Sharpwind gives a sharp mourning cry and dives at Elizar, the unconscious Jak still lashed into the saddle. The bird rakes Elizar across the face with its claws and stabs him in the chest, causing him to reel backwards. Abruptly the stinking cloud sitting heavy near the doorway into the tower evaporates. Greaek and Wiglaf rush to the opening.

Despite Morg scoring a vicious slash in his back, Elizar's crazed eyes are locked on the aggrieved hippogriff. As Elizar readies a spell to incinerate the bird, a blast from Wiglaf's outstreched hands takes him full in the chest, blasting the man backwards like a rag doll. Landing halfway down the hill, he rolls to a stop near a large boulder.

Around the campfire the group discusses what they had all been up to over the last several days.
