With the one most interesting person gone the bear returns to the north east tower to bash the door in, once again lacking any thumbs it just goes through the doorway rather than waste time testing it for a lock.

Durik cautiously approaches Gorm with his palms facing him; "Well friend-are you alright.  That was brave of you.  Do you need any healing?"  He will try and look over the bear for any injuries and then follows close behind it as it moves through the door.


OOC:  I don't think I saw Gorm turn to human and back.  So as far as Durik is concerned its just a smart bear that has been helping the party.

Passing the nearby keep, Morg notices lights through the narrow arrow slits, though no figures or movement is visible inside.

Invisible, Malz slides into the interior of the southeastern tower through a hole in the ruined second floor. Ruptured wooden ceiling beams covered with lichen lay askew over the rubble strewn remains of the floor. Gaping holes in the floor make the main floor visible below, where curtains hang across the eastern half of the room, apparently to wall off someone's private quarters. Several straw pallets lie on the floor near the door. A capstan stands against the north wall, with a heavy chain disappearing through a pipe to the northeast. The river laps just beneath the lower arrow slits of the tower.

Three figures huddle around the north-facing arrow slits, talking quietly among themselves.

"Is the bear gone?" one of them asks. "I can't tell yet," says another. "Things are quieter than they were at least."

After looking up from his work, Rowan finally realizes that he is alone in the guardhouse. He spies a coffer with a lock on it underneath one of the messy bunks, apparently left untouched by the rest of the group. Holger lies dead on the floor a few feet away, and another of the guards breathes shallowly across the room, tied securely by Morg's rope. The sound of hushed voices, too low to hear, echos up the nearby stone steps.

As the rest of the group gathers around Gorm, the bear continues to maul the locked door. Double doors front the structure to the immediate west of the tower, which appears to be a small chapel.

Finally the door gives way, opening inward to reveal the interior of the tower. A rush of air carries a rank smell out of the tower, where three large hairy creatures stand just inside the door, brandishing large morningstars and long javelins. Behind, the crew of the nearby keelboat shies away from the sound of the crash, but quickly move forward behind the creatures. The hairy figures are easily identifiable as bugbears.

"Argh, the damn bear! Fire!" the grizzled crewman exclaims, suiting his words by raising a massive crossbow and loosing a bolt at the ravening bear. A volley of bolts and javelins rain down on the bear, and one of the bugbears swings its morningstar at her head.

Everyone in the party is now up.

Roughly 15 minutes have passed since the end of the battle at the southwest tower, and around 5 minutes since Shoalar disappeared. Morg is again wearing his armor, Tana's Fly spell has worn off, and Magdrak has another 45 minutes for Magic Weapon.

Makari looked wide-eyed at the cluster in there. "I think we may need to go find our other friend soon and make sure there aren't more hiding in the bottom layer of his town as well."

He concentrated on one of the bugbears, pointing at it, and uttering an arcane phrase, "Eldritch Blast!" Twin beams of green flame lanced out, but one went wide.

OOC: Step back one square (I think to AH-10), fire off Eldritch Blast at B2 (or B3 if B2 is down), then step south one square, I believe to AH-11.
Hit AC 21 for 13 force damage. Missed...AC 11 for 15 force damage.

Morg grabs a javelin, shouts "A toothpick for the burrower!" and chucks it at one of the bugbears. He moves a few feet south shouting "Move away in case the tower collapses!"
Interaction: take out javelin.

Speak: trying to scare them out of the tower with a nonsense story about a burrower. Either Deception 7 or Intimidate 10.

Action: attack B2 (who might have half cover) with javelin - critical fail.
Extra attack: can't no more interactions.

Move: 25' to ak11.

19:29, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 7 using 1d20 with rolls of 7.  Deception or Intimidation (+3) check about fake burrower.

Tana waited for a clear shot, reaching one of her tiny hands out to fire off two blasts of eldritch power into the backs of the warriors.

Then, hopefully before they could fire back, she drifted ten feet to the right of the door.

After breaking in the door the bear weathers the combined assault of whatever was in there, and backs off, covered in blood but not suffering overly from that particular problem.

At the same time a bolt of lightning cracks down from above at an angle to blast the bugbears, sparks flying and a bit of sound but nothing like true thunder.

Durik waits his turn to follow the others into the room and looks for an opportunity to find a target in melee combat.

Magrak casts a quick teleportation spell to move past the bear, and attacks one of the bugbears with his battleaxe.  "Time to get to work."  When the two quick slashes connect, he focuses divine fury upon the foe.

With the sudden appearance of Magdrak among the occupants of the tower, crossbows swivel in his direction, and bolts fly.

The bear retreats from the door, taking a stinging blow to its hind leg as it moves away. Another bolt of lightning crashes down into the doorway, staggering the bugbear there. Rubbing at its eyes in the wake of the bright blast, it swings weakly at Durik as he approaches the door.


Map updated!

Magdrak needs to make a DC 16 Dex save or take 14 lightning (7 on a success), and make a concentration check for Magic Weapon.

Everyone in the party is now up.

Remainder of Round 1:

Morg throws a javelin at B2 - MISS.

Rowan hangs out.

Makari casts Agonizing Blast at B2 - HIT once for 13 force.

Magdrak casts Misty Step and moves into the tower. He attacks B3 - HIT twice with Divine Smite for a total of 32 damage. B3 is dead.

Tana casts Eldritch Blast - MISS.

Slowly but surely recovering from its injuries the bear moves back into view of the door just as another lightning bolt arcs in through one of the arrow slits in the side of the tower to impact between the crossbow team and their ally.

Makari eyed the first bugbear and aimed once more with his hand while gripping his staff. He fired off a pair of eldritch blasts of green flame once more. This time both blasts were better-aimed, though that didn't necessarily mean anything.

Hit AC 17 for 14 force damage. Hit AC 17 for 7 force damage.

Morg moves back to look thru the door, takes out his last javelin and is about to help Durik evade the bugbear, but seeing Mag inside the tower instead shouts at the goblinoid at the door as he throws his javelin at its head.
Move: 15' to ai9.

Interaction: take out javelin2.

Action: attack B2 with javelin2 - hits AC 13 (may also have half cover) for 15 piercing damage.
If that hit B2, then Morg will use the Menacing attack maneuver, in which case B2 must make a WIS save vs DC 16, or be frightened (disadvantage on ability
checks and attack rolls while Morg's within its line of sight, and B2 can't willingly move closer to Morg) until end of Morg's next turn.

Move: 10' to ak9.

Extra attack: If B2 can be attacked from ak9 (probably not because of the angle), then attack B2 with greatsword - hits AC 27 for 11 slashing damage.

Small and quick on her feet, Tana slipped into the open doorway just long enough to send another two bolts of eldritch power towards the most wounded looking enemy, and then darted back into a hiding spot.

Magrak cringes as he takes the full brunt of the lightning blast.  "What in the 'Fells was that?"  He shrugs it off and swings twice at Pike with his axe, hoping to down this opponent as quickly as the last.

The group quickly takes down the remaining bugbears and the keelboat crew. Darkness descends outside the tower, and the silence is broken only by the rushing water of the nearby river.


And, we're out of initiative again! Map updated.

Remainder of Round 2:

Morg throws a javelin at B2 - MISS. Morg moves up and attacks B2 with greatsword - HIT for 11 slashing. B2 is dead.

Rowan hangs out.

Makari casts Agonizing Blast at B1 - HIT twice for 21 force. B1 is dead.

Morg quickly looks around, and before leaving says "I'm going back to the southwest tower to make sure our prisoners don't escape - the keen eyed can have a look around here for clues and Rowan's sword."

He heads back the way he came, on the northern and western walls.
Quick passive perception=14 look around before going back to SW tower.

Makari shook his head. He wasn't injured. He also wasn't sure where to go. He looked back towards the tower to the south where he KNEW that some of the bandits had gone to. What if they tried to ambush Morg on his way back - or worse they want to free the prisoners?

He let out a sigh and followed after Morg, keeping his senses alert for danger.

"Unharmed."

Which was odd, as there was a tear in her leathers at her shoulder, and blood was drying around her collarbone.

"My magic is spent though, what was your goal once the bandits were dead?  Whose keep is this?""

Morg stops just before exiting the tower, and answers Tana, "I wanted to make sure the people here actually are bandits, and maybe capture and return them to the constable at Red Larch. While the cultists in the valley are probably beyond rehabilitation, bandits might be brought around. Hopefully our captives can also answer questions about some river pirates. Rowan needs to find and return a sword which may be here."
Heading back to SW tower.
