HOW THE VAMPIRES CAME TO BE

There are three distinct origin stories for vampires.  Sages debate which is true while some insist all are true, at least in general.

It is believed that the first vampire's name was Elezar.  He is believed to have been born from a union between Asmodeus and a young virgin who pledged herself to him in return for sparing her life (she was being burned at the stake for a crime she didn't commit, so the story goes).  Their child became the first Pureblood and the most powerful.  It is said he is personally gifted with powers far beyond any other.

Ancient texts describe a great general, perhaps even a great prince as well, falling on the battlefield and being offered eternal life in return for his fealty to the Lord of the Nine.  He accepted, and Malkava rose from the dead to win his war against overwhelming odds.  Although no longer a monarch in the common sense, his ancestral estate still stands and this Pureblood rules over his lands as he did many centuries ago.

The final origin story tells of a couple whose beliefs and desires were dark and deadly for those around them.  They enacted a ritual involving the sacrifice of an entire town to draw the Dark Lord of Hell to them.  He listened to their offer and granted them their request, for they had managed to corrupt every soul in town before sacrificing them.  Thus did Asia and her husband Athan rise that night as Purebloods.

The remaining Purebloods are members of the First Broods who have managed to survive the millennia (even for one desiring it, eternal life is a burden few can shoulder - in time, most seek death).  Those that remain have formed 12 great houses spread across the world, though their power is mostly concentrated within the Twelve Kingdoms.  Anyone seeking to form a new house is summarily destroyed.

Almae: The virginal mother of Elezar, Almae is one of Asmodeus' many consorts and the Patron of the Bloodkin Clans.  It is believed the Purebloods speak with her directly, can summon her when needed and that she takes an active role in purifying the bloodlines when she deems it necessary.  Many believe a new purification is on the horizon.  It is she (mostly through her son) that enforces the Nine Commandments that all vampires must obey.
