Cheers!
A Place to Hang Out With Friends / Players.

quote:
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Hang out. Discuss life. Share your vignette ideas.

Added our first 2 players and a co-GM who offered to run vignettes. We're on the way!

And we can build this thing together
Stand the stormy weather
Nothing's gunna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers (of RPGs)
We'll still have each other
Nothing's gunna stop us

Nothing's gunna stop us now.....

Hello everybody. I'll be clowning around once I get the details of my vignette settled in my head and approved by the GM.

Not a monster clown here, do not worry.

I advertised a bit in my own games.

So, this is probably going to be a slow starter, I figure, because it is not very well defined. I mean, I have the idea of what I want it to be, more of a game "community" for d20 that is just for really short "one act play" mini-games.

Like, for example, maybe you read a little blurb about a scenario in Dungeon and want
to test it out with a few characters. You could run (or play) it here, either solo or
with a few other players to help out.

Or maybe you want to test the waters for a new setting idea you have and just want to do
a scene or two out of it to help get the feel for what it would play like.

Ah, hello Leroy. I know that name. Still wearing turtlenecks like you did when we played on PBW?

In reply to KABOOM the Clown (msg # 6):

Oh no, I've been discovered! Drats and rats, foiled again. Yes, I was using that name on Playbyweb for a bit.

Actually, Leroy is just one character for a vignette that I may or may not pitch to this group. If the Story Guide would be so kind, could you change my user name in Vignettes to something more generic? I'll answer to Chupa Bob, Zaboem, or even That Guy.

Oh yeah, I appreciate the salutations.

Okay, I do have a vignette that I would like to pitch which is part space opera but mostly cosmic horror. I called it "The Paradox Institute" named after Fermi's Paradox. I would like to explore the setting a little because I am intending to use it as the basis of a NaNoWriMo project this upcoming November. I am not ready to release any part of it into the public domain. This group has a rule about that. Although I will probably release the entire book into the PD when I finish it, I don't want to give up that much control yet. Can we discuss making an exception to the PD Rule, or should I just shelf this concept for now?

There is not a public domain rule for this group, it's a rule about Creative Commons which is quite different from public domain. The reason for that was because I felt with so many players and GM's it would be impossible not to have some kind of license in place to protect the players and GM's from other player's and GM's (in most cases this would come up, former ones) coming back to say they infringed on something by participating in the game.

Here is a link to Creative Commons, some of these CC licenses are restrictive and don't grant commercial re-publication, or in some cases not even non-commercial re-publication. As long as you attribute your posts on here with one of these, I'd be fine with it; maybe with a link to whichever license it is, and defining re-publication as publication anywhere other than here on RPOL, in this game, "vignettes". So the threads for different vignettes could have different licenses and I think that would be pretty clear.

https://creativecommons.org/choose/

Keep in mind that the goal for this was to protect players and GM's participating in vignettes HERE on RPOL from being "infringers" because someone decides they do not want to continue to share something they posted here. So basically if you don't want people in this game continuing to use the content posted while playing here, even if you later decide you aren't interested in playing/GMing in this game anymore, then don't post it.

This has come up before in other games I've seen, where someone posts some story or character concepts, they get bored and leave, and want to "take their ball and go home" so no one can pick up where they left off. That goes against the idea of Vignettes community as I envision it. If someone reads about one of the vignettes and wanted to make another one continuing the idea in a second semi-related vignette, we'd want to encourage that, not worry about if they are breaking some copyright BS. It's all hippy love, man, all good!

But the rule was never intended to have authors worried someone would take this stuff and go post it somewhere else making money (or not) and them having no recourse. I feel like there is a CC license that would prevent that but allow the Vignettes community free play time with all the ideas posted here.

I re-read the rules and saw where it might have been taking the way you took it, so I clarified. The vignettes will eventually get posted to group 0 "archive" read-only threads so that other players in the game can read and enjoy them, not public, and they can have their license / notices on them, of course. Its just so people can get an idea of what other participants are doing and hopefully will inspire the community.

So far I haven't seen a lot of interest in this yet, but maybe it's because I'm not that well known here. I will keep posting when given the chance.

Sorry, I didn't mean the players who signed up, I mean I haven't seen a lot of players or GMs send an RTJ yet. I realize it takes quite a bit of thought and probably a critical mass of a few more participants before many vignettes get started.

I think this game is pretty much a non-starter. Oh well.

I am out of town this weekend and next so if you send something, not that I expect much, I won't be able to respond until Monday.

I'm still tied in knots by real life much of the time and haven't pulled my thoughts together to post a vignette of my own. Plus, my tastes in games really don't point towards the settings/themes so far pitched. I'm not really combat-happy.

This animator made some excellent points on the topic of dungeon design.
