One last look

Brent sighs as they see the ruins of the city.  "It looks like two big nukes did them in.  I'm sorry."

The lakes' radiation count is somewhat higher than the background count, and, according to the ship's database, it calculates out to what one might expect from a two hundred and fifty year-old nuclear blast. These were surface hits - the debris field and fallout area is clearly defined from the radiation pattern. Anyone living within 50km of this area was either vaporized, or received a radiation dose that even Imperial medicine would not have cured.

Re: One last look

JR:
Gareth pulls up the destroyed town's location, and plots a change to their orbital inclination so they will pass over the site.

Brent arrives on the bridge, and the pair pilot Wanderer though a descent into the atmosphere. Forty minutes later, they are within fifty kilometers of the town of Keane. Joxe brings up a large holodisplay in the crew area, where Naimh can sit on the couch and steer the display around. The image can be zoomed in, or turned in any direction as multi spectral information is fed in from the ship's sensors.

They descend and slow down to pass over the location, riding on the ship's grav lifters. The nav system marks where the town was - but there is no trace of human habitation, save for a single road that leads into one of a pair of circular lakes about a half kilometer each in diameter. The area around the lakes is mostly scrub grass and sand; the surrounding forest hasn't encroached too closely.

Niamh is silent as they approach the location of what used to be her home town, but the sad and grave look on her lightly freckled face seems to somehow speak volumes.  Woodenly, she zooms the holodisplay on the pair of oddly lifeless lakes.  The tone of the doctor's voice when she finally decides to speak up appears to appropriately match the quiet desolation that she's seeing.

"Those two lakes...they're from the nukes, aren't they?"

Veronica sits next to Naimh and reaches for her hand. "Yes, I think they are. I'm so sorry."

Joxe checks the sensor readouts. "It was very quick, at least for those in the town," she says with a sigh.

Unseen by the people on the bridge, Niamh takes a few moments to pray silently to the All-Mind for her girlfriend, her family, and everybody she ever knew on her homeworld.  Somehow, she doesn't shed any tears, but has an odd, numb feeling in her heart that might actually feel just a little bit worse.

Her prayer done, Niamh lets out a long yet quiet sigh before saying into the ship's intercom, "Okay.  I think I can leave now...and thanks."

Re: One last look

Brent stays silent out of respect as soon as he sees the two lakes.  He does start plotting a course to take them out to the Jump point so that when the decision is made he nods. "I'm doubly sorry for your loss Niamh.  I think I speak for all of us to say that you are welcome aboard as long as you wish."

He presses a few virtual buttons in the holographic control panel.  "Standby for boost, I'm taking us to the Jump point."

Re: One last look

Wanderer climbs out of the planetary atmosphere, boosting at 1G acceleration. The jump point's marker glows in the navigation display, with an ETA counter showing 4.3 hours to the jump point.

"We're going to Poznan next?" Joxe asks.

Brent got the ship settled into the course once they were clear of the atmosphere and any orbital debris.  "Yes, I think that Poznan is really the best bet."

Jump to Poznan

Wanderer makes her way to the jump point, altering course several times to avoid some the more troublesome bit of debris still in orbit. Reaching the jump point, the jump drive activates, and everyone feels the twisting in their gut as the ship transitions smoothly into jump space.

Jump to Poznan

Brent sighs and a great deal of tension eases out of his shoulders as the board lights up green as they transitioned into Jump space.  He locked down the control panel and stood, his hands shaking just a bit.  "I don't know why but that transition scares me a bit.  It's safe if done right but it just is a bit unnatural down deep."

Jump to Poznan

Brent remained on the bridge for a while as well, studying the readouts on the Jump drive repeaters and tracing out the navigational inputs.  "I definitely want to learn more about navigation in Jump.  Experience should make this less of an unknown."

Sometime later he called Joxe.  "How are things going?  I was wondering if I can lend you a hand with maintenance if you'd teach me a bit about how the Jump drives work."

Jump to Poznan

Wanderer's jump drive appears to be working correctly, as the jump field is well within its operating limits.

"I'll take you up on that. I'm in the hangar, inspecting the air raft. You'll need a vacc suit, but you can come help me." Joxe replies.

"Ok, see you in a few." Brent headed over and slipped into the vac suit that he'd worn on the original excursion to the ship.  After cycling through the airlock he headed into the hangar with the practiced ease of one well used to vacuum.  "So what help you do need Joxe?"  His voice was light and friendly.

Brent finds Joxe standing next to the air raft's right front door. She, too, wears her vacc suit. She smiles and steps over to him, then she presses her helmet against his. "You are invited to my cabin tonight, but you have to wear shorts, okay?"

After a few moments, Niamh pipes up from the lounge, where she's trying to find some recent medical data to read.  "I wish I could tell you guys something useful about Poznan, but I really can't.  Apart from passing through its starport a few times and the fact that I was able to get a pretty good cup of coffee there at the time, I really don't anything about the place."

"Good. Now, let's get to the inspection." Joxe steps away, and addresses Brent though a private comm channel. "We are running what I've called an 'A' check, which is just looking through the maintenance logs, and checking on critical systems. In this case, we're looking at the counter grav units." She hands Brent a large datapad. "Here's the checklist. If nothing's wrong, it will take us about four hours to go through everything."

"Sure," Joxe says with a smile. She opens the air raft's right door and begins to remove the front seat. "The main grav unit is under here," she explains.

Looking at the diagrams, Brent sees that the systems he's interested in are located in the air raft's blunt nose. The tablet has already linked itself with the air raft's onboard computer, and to the ship's datanet. He immediately sees that these systems, while familiar, are quite a bit more sophisticated than the hardware he'd dealt with back home.

His recent study during the jump from the Egg System has helped to bridge that gap, so he's able to - mostly - puzzle out the unfamiliar parts and components.

Brent nods to Joxe and soon is deeply embedded in working on the maintenance action to the exclusion of everything else.  He's proud and determined to learn the hard way and stays focused on the work rather than asking more than the very minimum of questions.
