"I don't think Daelan has ever told us," Tarpin admits with a shrug. "What Boc wants, well, I think I would call them a pair of spiked gauntlets of baby ogre power, basically like half as powerful as regular gauntlets of ogre power for a quarter the price, plus spikes." Tarpin shrugs again. "We will have to ask around to see if anyone has ever made or found them here before."

"Anyway, I have finished examining the items we found on our last mission. There is:
  • a ring of protection +1 (plain gold band),
  • an amulet of natural armour +1 (gold chain with a locket with a picture of a female goblin zombie),
  • a cloak of resistance +1 (that appears to have been made from a wolf pelt),
  • a small sized masterwork dagger (the wavey sacrificial blade type),
  • a potion of cure light wounds,
  • a potion of hide from undead,
  • a potion of remove fear,
  • 120 gps worth of copper, silver and gold local currency pieces.

Does anyone want to claim anything in particular? Whatever is left over we can sell this afternoon (at half price) and buy other gear with the cash."

OOC: There was also a pouch of nine 50 gp black opals that Daelan has and she may have other plans for.

"I can use quite a few but only if they are offered. That dagger could be interesting to say the least. Ring....amulet...cloak. Definatly a good haul but since I was not there to earn them...." The rogue watches Tarpin."So why work with Daelen if you aren't sure what she can and cannot do? Of course you don't know anything about me and I get it. She seems intriging the say the least." Another yawn. The skunk stands up and moves over to Tarpin and sniffs him."And I think be it as is, everyone left save me and you, and that Jorath. Daelen left as did that big half-orc."

Tarpin grinned at the gnome.

"You're in the army now. We don't ask why we were chosen for this squad. We just do what we are told, with who we are told to work with. The couple of missions we have had so far probably haven't let us see much of what Daelan can do yet, and she's not the sort to boast about her skills. Anyway, talking about who we work with, how did you ever hook up with a skunk?"

OOC: For convenience let's assume the conversation about magic items has taken place before everyone headed off to go shopping at the markets.

"I do what I want, when I want and if I want to do it with who. I don't take orders or give them and I always do for the most part-what is right even if it gets me into trouble. I don't care about the concenqences. I deal with it." The rogue stands up and kneels down by the skunk."As for the skunk? Eh. I just like him. He's a orphan, much like me eh." He pets the skunk on the snort and in turn it squeaks at him."And whatever you do-don't touch him. Last person that did well...lets just say he still stinks. And got a blade in his back. But I didn't do it. No sir. He's alive, which is good. For the most part." Vance smiles.

OOC
Well either way if no one wants the cloak, ring and amulet I will take them :)

Boc ambles through the mess hall on his way back from the armoury.  He takes a sandwich "Jor." and stuffs it whole into his mouth.  He notices the loot on the table and pauses to pick up the amulet.  He opens it and peers at the tiny picture. "Mib Klup." he mumbles through the mouthful, seemingly surprised by what he sees.  He hangs the amulet around his neck along with the shrunken goblin skulls, takes another sandwich and heads for his bunk and sleep.

The gnome takes the cloak and the dagger, holding it up in case someone else wants it and sits down. He yawns, taking a sip of wine and watches Tarpin as the brute enters and takes the amulet. He then watches Jor take the ring and nods."So I will take the potions if you allow it? They won't go to waste. The gold could be useful if we needed it. Now that it is settled, I am going to depart if you don't need anything?" He then stands, and pets the skunk.

"Not so fast, Vance. You can take a share of the treasure after you've shared the risk to earn it, not before. Boc chose the amulet of natural armor, Jorath chose the ring of protection, so Daelan and I can either choose the cloak of resistance or all the rest of that lot - potions, dagger, coins and black opals as our shares.

"What do you choose, Daelan? Do you want the wolf-skin cloak of resistance or the potions, dagger, coins and black opals? I don't mind either way."

"Did you not say we are a 'team'? No one claim it. So I did and yet you now said I cannot have them? Fine. Take them." The man takes the cloak and dagger and puts them on the table."I am going to go rest." The gnome is of course surprised but he knows. He shrugs, pets the skunk then leaves without a word.

Now I'm gone to my tent.

After a quiet chat with Daelan it is decided that Tarpin can have the wolfskin cloak and Daelan takes the black opals as her share. The rest can be sold. Tarpin hands over the 25gp each that they could have sold two of the potions for (i.e. cure light wounds and hide from undead), leaving only the small masterwork dagger and potion of remove fear to be sold for 76gp and 25gp respectively. With the 120gp in local coinage as well, that means it is a sum of 271gp that he hands to Daelan for her to do with as she chooses.

Then Tarpin heads off to the marketplace to do his own shopping and organise the special item that Boc had asked him to find. He is gone for most of the afternoon but returns in time for the debriefing, looking quite satisfied. With a big grin he hands Boc a pair of spiked gauntlets.

"There you go, Boc. Just what you asked for. I call them Spiked Gauntlets of Baby Ogre Power! But I know that's a lot for you to say, so you can just call them your gauntlets of BOP!"

Boc sleeps as long as he can, snoring loudly in his tent.  He returns to the armoury and inspects the work done by the smith on his halberd.  "Bang!  Good."  He holds out a handful of coins and lets the smith pick out the 25gp payment.

Back in the mess Boc seeks out Tarpin and tries on the spiked gauntlets.  "BOP good!"  He seems well pleased with the gauntlets and pours all of the coins from his purse into Tarpin's lap, then looks at the mage puzzled.  "More?"  He seems surprised when Daelan hands him another pile of coins but nods his thanks solemnly then gives that pile to Tarpin also.  "More?"

Boc arrives at the town hall early for the briefing and sits watching out for the other recon squad members to arrive.

Coming in a bit late, the rogue sits down on the far end away from the group. Vance watches them as they come in, one by one but doesn't say a word. He pull out a dagger and balance it on the table, now watching it. The skunk comes in shortly afterwards and sits down, yawning. He pets it with one hand while still balancing it with the other.

Seeing another member of the team arrive, Boc ambles over towards where Vance sits.  He's slept on the problem and has now figured it out, and is ready to share his newly determined conclusion with the gnome.  He sits down next to Vance, careful not to sit on the skunk.  He points a fat finger at the gnome and pronounces his judgement.  "No gob."  He shakes his head, rattling the goblin skulls hanging about his neck.

As the sun starts to get low in the sky the apprentices, guild heads and militia leaders all start making their way to the town hall. While the apprentices slept word spread of the achievements of the nights raid and when the group make their way into the hall several of the militia leaders and guild heads acknowledge you with smiles and polite nods, a couple even make their way to each of you with compliments and probing questions. At 1700 hrs on the dot the sergeant makes his way in with the towns mayor and several rolls of parchment. Wasting no time he spreads them on the table and the mayor steps forward. “Friends, thank you for attending. We will be holding a council session after this briefing, the sergeant has received orders for his next mission and he requested that you be present in case there is any pertinent information that you can assist him with. He also has received word about the movements of the army and those of the enemy. Sergeant, if you will?”
“Right. For the last two days the order of the dawn has been on the move, the vast majority of its paladins have been heading to the realms towns and fiefdoms gathering each lords knights then heading south. The order of the Xenith have marched in force from the capital of Stonehearth with the Grand wardens infantry companies and are marching south. All these forces are expected to muster in three days time North of here on the flood plains between Wheaton and Longwood. The Pegasus knights and the recon company are already in the field gathering intel on the enemy and the realms most powerful mages and sages have been very active with divinations, troop movements, scrying and the enchanting of more arms and armour. The reports so far are grim, the closest significant concentrations of enemy forces are as close as a days forced march south of here but for the last two days since the fall of fort cage it seems the enemy have either worked on rebuilding the fort or have spread out into raiding bands attacking the farm steads and hamlets south of here. All of our intel suggests that we have two or three days until they manage to make their way this far North. Until then we will continue to harass the enemy and will attempt to rescue those civilians that are still in the area.”
“A request has come in from Arch Druid Lorifael.”
Here the Sergeant takes out a dagger and uses it to point to a place on the map that he has spread on the table that shows the shire of Mightyhorn. “Twenty one kilometers South East of here the druids set up a small colony and didn’t feel the need to inform the wardens. When news of the attack reached the Arch Druid he sent an animal messenger warning them to flee and felt his bird shot down just before it could reach the druid leading the grove. The wardens are not happy about the situation, at all, but have been told that there are some powerful allies within that colony. As the closest specialist group to the location we have been ordered to get to the grove and recover any assets there, if there’s nothing left we are to head South, gather intel on the enemy and then make our way back here.”
Most of the leaders only express surprise upon learning about the colony though one of the corporals from the rapidly growing militia steps forward and also uses a dagger to point at the map. “I don’t know about the colony Sarge but my pa has a farm stead down there and there’s a couple o thangs might be useful to you. Bout two kays East o there Dwarves built a water mill on a branch o the great river an they built it strong. Folks round those parts know its tha safest place shy o Fort Cage. Makes sense whatcha sayin about them Druids, tha wild animals round those parts are uncanny smart, hard ta hunt an real helpful ter friendly folk.”
The Corporal points out the roads and paths they plan to take to get to this remote area and modifies their plans slightly based on the suggestions of the gathered leaders. Any other questions are fielded by the Sergeant before he then turns to the assembled apprentices. “Any questions you have, now’s the time. We’ll be departing in an hour, so when we break off gather your gear and assemble at the South gate.”

"So you want us to save the druids? I see. Or the remainder of them. Sounds tah me to be a interesting adventure. I'm in. Course I'll be ordered to go but really...." The gnome takes the dagger and puts it into his sleeve (not the dagger uses for the map-his dagger). He leans back, the skunk snorting a bit but he pets his head. The skunk relaxes."So we don't know if our allies or soon to be allies are dead? Lovely. Either way, still up for it." He gives Boc a odd look as he glances towards him."No. Not a goblin. Gnome. Can you say gnome? Friend. Ally. Compatriot. No squash me."

The corporal will grin at Vance. "The Wayfarer Mage Istallius wasn't sure of the specifics but was under the impression there are a handful of spell capable druids there, sounded like there was a fair gathering of civilians who wish to be closer to nature." The Sergeant will snort at this "Yep, Hippies. The druids will be useful though, smooth out terrain, turn it on the enemy, bolster the cavalry."

"Another night mission," Tarpin notes without surprise.

"Those who can't see in the dark better make sure they have a light source," he suggests to the other members of their squad. "I will be able to create a light lasts half an hour if anyone needs it but I bought this little beauty for me to use."

He proudly shows them (and Vance in particular) the gnomish miner's head lamp that he managed to purchase in town. When he opens the shutter at the front it emits a conical beam of light that provides clear illumination 60 feet in front of him.

"It should make me a perfect target, so I hope I'm not the only one in the squad carrying a light," he laughs.

"So....I am supposed to be surprised why? Its a light. I don't need it. Thanks for asking." The man gives Tarpin a rather odd look. He has seen them and he doesn't seem surprised. He then goes back to petting the skunk, and now is focused on the chin of the beast."You do realize the enemy will see the light correct so they will know who to throw spells at." A chuckle comes from Vance and he shakes his head."How do we know they will not turn against us Corporeal? If they did not want use to know they may take us as invaders. That I do not like. Is there something from you we can bring with us showing we are not the enemy?"

"I know you don't need it, Vance, but a lot of us in the squad are humans and can't see in the dark the way gnomes, dwarves, elves, orcs and goblins can. If we can't see them we can't fight them, so this head lamp is the best solution I have found, so far. It's as good as a bullseye lantern but I don't have to carry it by hand. I know there are other magic items like goggles that let a man see in the dark but those things are far too expensive for any of us to afford yet," Tarpin explains to the gnome.

"You make a good point about some way of identifying us to the druids, though. I mean, it is obvious we are not goblin invaders but we might need some way to show them that our warning is important and official, so they don't just ignore us or try to drive us away."

"Noom."  Boc nods slowly as he tries the new word.  "No eat." he agrees.

He listens patiently during the briefing, following the conversations as best he can.  When the talking is finished he follows Jorath to the kitchens certain that the monk will lead him to something he can eat.  He fills a sack with bread, meat, cheese, turnips and anything else the cooks will let him have, then collects his gear and heads for the gate as ordered.
