The Town of Mightyhorn
That evening at the meeting the mayor, a middle aged man who seems distraught by the devastation of his community, is happy to let the sergeant lead the discussion. First the head of the town watch talks about the ditches and spiked barricades that have been constructed and the numbers of men and women that can be called upon in the hastily formed militia. The priest adds that hundreds of barrels of water and sacks of grain have been stored away and that buckets of sand are being piled around the town. The mood becomes quite hopeful until the others see the grim look on the corporal and the sergeants face.

The corporal is the first to talk. "Today while escorting in farmers we managed to capture a goblin raider. While he was very low in the chain of command he claims that two days ago a goblin prophecy came true, the cliffs at the edge of their lands vanished and opened a way to a valley of wealth beyond their greatest dreams, our valley. He claims that various tribes have been mustering their strength for years and that when the way opened they were ready. While they were surprised by the fortress they found their numbers, monsters and magic allowed them to raze it in less than a day. The goblin claims that the bulk of their force is currently celebrating in the ruins and that there were several small bands that struck out to explore these new lands before their more powerful cousins finish their fun and move out. Sadly, I don't believe our captive had the imagination to have made this up."

The Sergeant is the next to speak and starts by calling for two of the apprentices to bring in his guest. As he speaks the two apprentices return with one of the captured slaves. Clearly a half Ork of remarkable strength the clean tunic and trousers he has been provided with do little to cover the dozens of scars from manacles, chains and the lash. "Today while my lads went ter round up some farmers we came across a mob o goblins lootin the farm. Durin the fightin their slaves turned on em, this fine feller took down three wit a shovel and on returning our priest has used his prayers to confirm that he can be trusted. Him and the other slaves speak Goblin and a kinda pidgin o common and they've told us that a small tribe have holed up in one of the farm steads and they've started to work a spell that'll take a few days ter complete. There's a fair few warriors and a shaman, so while the town continues to build its defences we're going to strike out tomorrow to try ter neutralise this threat. The bulk o you will be wit me, Tarpin, Daelan and Jorath, I want you to look after our new friend Boc. While me and the heavily armoured lads will draw the Gobboes out you an the corporal will come in quieter and focus on the shaman. Any questions?"

"Yes sir, sergeant, will do. Do you just want us to kill this shaman as quick as we can or is that the last resort if we can't take him prisoner? Is there any clue about what the spell is that they are working on?"

When he gets a chance to talk to Boc later Tarpin will welcome the halforc to their squad and ask if he can fill in any more details about the shaman, the spell or about the number of the enemy that they might be facing when they go after the shaman. Anything that Boc can tell them could be useful.

Boc,  player, Last Login: Tue, 10 May.

Daelan will see the Quartermasters about requisitioning a new backpack, trail rations, rope, and a sap.

OOC: sorry for the slow start, I should be OK from here.

The half orc does not smile.  Nor is he talkative.  "Tar-pin.  Day-lan.  Jor-aff."  That embeds the new names into his scarred head.  He does not know anything useful about the spell the shamans are casting.  "Boc no magic.  Boc light."  He shrugs and follows the corporal to the armoury.  He selects a chain shirt, shield and halberd - almost a smile - and a few other smaller items.  He's ready to move out when the corporal gives the order, fidgeting with his string of goblin skulls while he waits.

The sergeant will grin at Boc before considering Tarpins question. "If capture is easy then make sure that he is gagged and bound good and proper... dealin with rogue mages none will cry if you kill im before he's tried and burned fer practicing black magic. Right, meeting adjourned, leaders, we'll continue to talk about tomorrows efforts, apprentices, turn in for the night. Tomorrow we march."

The rest of the night goes quietly and the dawn brings yet more smoke and tales of woe. A few more farmers and hunters arrive during the night and bring news that the goblin war bands are still looting but some have been spotted taking slaves and corpses away with them. With the rising sun the apprentices are all mustered and are soon marching towards the farm.

A couple of hours before dusk the corporal orders the group to rest at the base of a hill and heads off alone to check the groups position. Fifteen minutes later he comes jogging back and has a quick word with the Sergeant. The sergeant then gathers all the apprentices together and clears a patch of dirt. The corporal then starts to draw a mud map (scratches a picture in the dirt with a stick) and talks as he draws. "Right, from what I saw the farm consists of four buildings, north, a farmhouse, south a small out house, East a large barn and below it a chicken coop with a fenced off yard. In the middle there's a big bull skeleton alter and around it in a pentagram there's roughly thirty bodies. I saw movement from the farmhouse and barn, I reckon thats were the goblins must be sleeping through the day." The Corporal passes the stick to the sergeant. "Right, the bulk of you come with me. We strike from the North, hard, and we bring the noise to draw the guards out into the open ground. The corporal and his team then hit the shaman from the south. I reckon dusk for them is like breakfast time for us so we strike as the sun sets. Right, move out!"

The group splits up, the sergeant and the more heavily armored apprentices heading North and the Corporal with Jorath, Daelan, Tarpin and Boc heading South. After an hour of moving very carefully through the areas light forest the corporal will gesture for the group to halt and gather. "The farm house is roughly three hundred meters from here. Fan out a little then hide a hundred meters out at the edge of the tree line, we attack once the sergeant commences his assault."

OOC: Map for group 0 and experience updated. Assuming that heading north will take you to the center of the farm please describe if you head straight in or how many feet you deviate to the east or west. Roll move silently and hide checks and describe any actions you wish to take in the minutes before the sergeant attacks or when the sergeant attacks. The farm compound is roughly two hundred feet across and the tree line is roughly three hundred feet to its south.

Besides strategy A of barn burning, I'd like to approach the farm houses from the east, If I was a big bad goblin I'd want the high ground or the low ground, 2nd story or cellar to be specific.

Purging everything with fire is my gut opinion.

"We are going to need a door, anyone interested in making one?"

"Shall we use that group of 3 boulders southeast of the chicken coup for cover? I will go to the south edge of the big one. Then does anyone want to be as big as an ogre?  I can use my wand to enlarge one person at a time."

While waiting for an answer Tarpin cast a spell of Mage armor on himself before they moved forward.

Tarpin rolled 18 for move silently and 9 for hide.

Jorath is excited by the idea of squishing goblins as uber Jorath."I would like to be over size, just wait till we are about to attack and do it then otherwise I don't think I can hide too well"
He flexes his hands in his gloves making sure they are comfortable before he dishes out pain.

"Boc make noise."  The half orc shrugs then heads towards the boulder to the west to wait for the attack.
