[1.08] The Precise Execution

Coming up into the light causes everyone eye's to adjust to bright sun and the noises of the city around them. For awhile now they had been underground with only dim torchlight to guide them but now the sun is at mid-day and the oppressive and gloomy nature of the dead warrens quickly melts away.

Hauling the severed limbs of the barbarian Gaekhen draws stares and looks no matter how well parts are disguised but any trouble with the guards is easily explained away with a flash of the official orders of the Field Marshall.

As usual she is in her office with a grim look and a stack of paperwork that threatens to collapse upon her and bury her in an avalanche.

Field Marshall Kroft was never one known for her cheery disposition but there is a chill air around her that even another successful mission doesn't banish.

"Thank you for taking care of this request. The city is a dry as tinder and the last thing we need were raging barbarians to spark another riot."

She eyes the severed nature of the body parts but with a shake of her head dismisses any questions she might have raised.

"I imagine a full report is in order. What did you find down there?"

She set down her pen and folded her hands in front of her, leaning forward to indicate that the group had her full attention.

Kraw answers "mostly Derro, some prisoners we freed, an otyugh, and a few necromantic and Construct monsters." He and the others had brought along the captured townsfolk so they could be treated and returned to their families.

The guards quickly take over helping the freed prisoners. While most of them are beggars pulled off the street, one of them in particular seems a cut above the rest.

One of the guards interrupts to inform the group that one of the prisoners wishes to express her gratitude to the party when they are done meeting with the Field Marshall.

Field Marshall Kroft nods as Kraw delivers his report.

"The tunnels beneath the city are rife with invaders from the Darklands. I heard tell that Riddleport out West has had to fend off raids from dark elves beneath the city so why shouldn't we be plagued by Derro? Any sing of Rolth? No? That is unfortunate. We have been trying to pin him down for months but perhaps it is for the best that you didn't encounter him. You were able to retrieve the body and free prisoners from his necromancy so that is a win. We will station some guards to watch over the tunnels to see if he returns but I suspect he will abandon this lair. Rumor has it he has many such safehouses set up throughout the city. It is a win, don't get me wrong, but getting rid of Rolth would be a big win for the safety of Korvosans.

Anyway there is darker news that I have to share with you. It will soon be announced that the Queen is going to execute the 'assassin' that murdered the King. It is going to be the event of the season with many of Korvosa's nobles, military officers and anyone with any real importance being invited to Castle Korvosa's public courtyard to witness the event.

With the way things have been going recently I am putting in a request for additional guards to be in attendance as this might trigger yet another riot. While the nobility might be buying the official statements of the Queen, the public are decidedly mixed about whether Trinia is innocent or not.

Assuming my request is approved I would like you in the courtyard as well. I know your personal opinions and I share them but at this point I have to also be concerned about the lives of all Korvosans. You are some of my best agents and I know I can trust you to handle things appropriately with minimal bloodshed. I do not want...I cannot have more senseless blood on my hands.

Will you do this for me? The execution is going to be set for three days from now."

Figus was dumbstruck. This went against all he believed and stood for as a member of the guard. To participate in such an action even to prevent further violence ... he was not sure he cold do it.

Slowly, very slowly he shook his head in denial "I cannot in all good conscience be part of this."

Kraw also shakes his head. "I cannot be a party to this travesty of justice. It was evident from the start that the queen sought someone to take the blame. With an innocent set up to be executed for the crime, none would look at the queen's personal hatchetwoman as the killer. No, not this time. Find yourself someone who can stomach the slaying of an innocent."

Field Marshall Kroft nodded, her eyes showing she was in just as much pain as they and was choking down guilt as she gave out her orders.

"Given your service to the city I will not force you. All I ask is to consider that your presence or absence will not change what is going to happen. However if a riot does break out more innocents will suffer and would you rather it be you keeping the peace, of the Queen's personal guard or the Hellknights? What is being delivered is not justice but we can try to bring good into the world through other means."

"Our duty is to the City and if riot breaks out, I will do my duty. But ...." Figus could not bring himself up to finish the sentence. What was his duty in the face of such injustice. Just which side of such conflict would his loyalties lay?

"I am afraid I will have to ask to be excused of this duty as well. Not out of any particular political opinions, I just cannot stand there while this is carried out." Kyra lets the Marshal know where she stands on the matter.

Kyra is still likely to be there, only not standing in front of the mob.

Ayeesha raised her eyebrows at the 'raging barbarian' line, but said nothing else.

Then the topic turned darker, and she scowled at the Field Marshall.

"Not my business who the Queen wants to have killed. All part of bein' Queen, eh? And the Queen's woman gotta do what the Queen's woman gotta do too." she continued, glaring at the Field Marshall.

"Probably a good idea not to force us. I'm going to be busy. Let's go."

Those last two words are delivered rather pointedly at her companions in a tone that said 'we should stop talking about this in front of the Queen's Field Marshall.'

OOC: Days later...

The execution it is not an affair to be missed. The toast of Korvosa is in attendance in garish gowns, fine capes, and enough jewels to blind a common man. The overall feel of the event is that of a grand ball or party, not an assassin’s public execution.

OOC: Final role call. Let me know if you're here in the station of a guard or a bystander (or if you're far afield) so I can narrate appropriately.

Figus is a present, but is part of the crowd as a bystander. A raven sits on his shoulder. He does not look happy.

Likewise, Kyra will be there as a bystander. Unless something can be worked out with Blackjack before the show starts.
