"Mm. You do that. We'll need to get close if we use poison."

The car pulls out of traffic and glides down onto parking space. The shop sits on the ground floor of an old factory building. Newer, shinier stores and apartments surround it while Yoshin's own place looks like it belongs in a museum.

"Call me when you find something Nieren."

I take a moment to straighten my suit before opening the wooden door to Happy Petals. Inside, classic bouquets, bundles of roses, and banzai trees line the walls and fill tables arranged around the room. The old wooden floors and small-pane windows combine to give the place a warm, red atmosphere that is accented by the bright greens and yellows of flowers and leaves. As I walk to the counter, an old woman says her goodbyes to a smiling Japanese man with a face more weathered than a life of simple gardening would elicit. Mota Yoshin wears sandals, tan pants, and a simple white shirt that fits a little baggy to better hide the muscle that lies beneath.

"Mr. Yoshin." I bow my head slightly and fix a business-like smile. "Always a pleasure."

"Oskar! Welcome back to my shop."

Mota's weathered face splits into a wide grin.

"I have a wide selection of flowers and bonsai here but if I know you, I think you're interested in some of the more exotic breeds I keep in the back. Would I be correct?"

"Come with me then," Yoshin says as he leads Oskar through a biometrically locked door in the back of the shop. As the door swings closed behind them, he turns.

"So you gotta kill someone quietly, eh? I got some ideas. Do you know what their brain-cybernetics are like? There's some variables for whether we need a virus or not to get the poison to take."

"I know they have a high-level corporate chip in their head. The guy isn't aware, but if he feels threatened he'll turn into a serious threat. We need him dead before he knows there's a problem."

"Okay, with a high end reactive chip like that it could be monitoring his vital signs for toxins. If the mods are extensive enough it could even shut him down and purge him - it's pretty gross, but it works. There's two routes to take here.

The more sure but more risky one is what we call a spine wedge - a short-range high-intensity jammer that you strap to the neck. It stops signals between his brain stem and the rest of his body. If you have physical access to the target in a closed area I'd recommend this - good ones leave no marks and just stops the heart.

Otherwise, you're stuck with a network virus that'll disable pretty much everything local for a limited time, including the target's chip. That'll allow you to take him out any way you like, including poison. Any preference?"

"Understood. There's a small problem with that. I don't keep them in stock - they're one of the few things in this city that you can't make excuses for having. It'll take me a day or so to get one in.

There's another problem. The guy I get them from - I owe him a favor. I don't think he'll sell me something like this unless we even up first. If we have a deal, I'll call him right now and see what needs doing."

Oscar's phone rings.

"Why don't you get that, I'll make this call, and then we'll talk."

"You have a deal Mr. Yoshin." I take my phone out of a jacket pocket. "This will only take a minute."

I answer my phone with a quick, "Talk to me."

I lean against the wall of a dead-end alley, broken bottles and cigarette butts my only company as I call my partner.

"I've seen the building plans; it's minimal security, but there's a nonlethal defense system in the target's apartment. I'm gonna go stake it out for a while, see if I can find us a way past the door buzzers and foyer camera."

"Good. I found us a method for him. We'll have to get close, so that security will need to be bypassed. We have a day before we get our tool, but there's still a catch - we have to do a small favor for the seller. See what more you can find on the security. I'll call you back when I know what our extra task is."

I end the call and return to Mr. Yoshin.

I pocket my phone and leave the alley, striding confidently through the ever-present and ever-varied crowd. A Hare Krishna, banging a tambourine with his cybernetic arm, briefly catches my eye as I hail a cab. It feels good to be working again; as unpleasant as planning cold-blooded murder might be, it was certainly an interesting challenge. The cab drops me off on the roof of 3G.4; I hoped the unmonitored access door I saw in the plans would be unlocked, but I'm not that lucky. Sounded like Oskar wasn't, either, so I sit against the roof bulkhead, disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling my pistol while I wait to see if he needs my help with this favor.

"Okay," Yoshin says with the expression of someone telling their kid that their dog died.

"Since this is my debt you're paying to my guy, I'm not going to charge you for this. But what he needs done is a little more demanding than I expected.

The person in question is Alek Chenkire. I can see you don't recognize that name, but you might recognize his pseudonym: The Bear of Berlin. Sells arms and armaments to just about everyone, and nobody dares fuck him over. People who have have died in the most unspeakable ways imaginable. Spit-roasted in public squares, electrocuted to death on hacked broadcasts over the major networks, etc. It's always messy, public, and impossible to tie back to him.

The reason why his hands are so shiny clean is that people owe him favors. He'll give out a scrap here and there to a person in need who he deems to be reliable. When he calls in those favors, it's to make an example of someone who fucked him.

I think you can see where this is going.

You need to kill a man, violently, in public. If you can do it without getting yourselves killed or caught all the better, but he really doesn't care. And if you breathe his name on the job, you'll be the next target.

You keeping up?"

"Yeah. You're saying we need to do a favor for a guy you never want to do a favor for."

I pause for a long moment to think about getting involved with a maniac like The Bear...But if someone's going to do it, it might as well be us.

"You have a deal. Does he have any preference on the death or are we free to find our own creative touch?"

"No specific requirements beyond that the death be unpleasant, and the body left in public. Beyond that it should be easy. The idiot still has one of the stolen pistols on him and they're chipped."

He places down a chip on the table. "That is the tracking information. You go do this and come back in the next two days, I'll have your spinal wedge."

"My thanks Mr. Yoshin. You always have an elegant solution. Try to have the wedge in good time though. I'm on a schedule."

I bow my head and leave Happy Petals, and call up Nieren to explain our deal. If I can find a subtle method to kill our target, I'm sure he can come up with something bloody.

"Just so I'm clear, your...expert owes a favor to the fucking Berlin Bear, who wants us to kill a man and leave his body on display? For stealing a couple pistols? Cachu; beat him, take a hand or an arm, bu- No, I understand I don't have a choice. I'm on my way."

I hang up and reassemble my pistol quickly, muttering "Mae'r fuwch dwp ffycin yn mynd i gael fy lladd" to myself all the while. As always, a cab is easy to hail and asks no questions; a flicker in the driver's cyber-eyes giving away both that he bought cheap and that he's streaming a video - likely pornographic or violent, or both - as he weaves through the skyway. I meet Oskar in a deserted parking structure a few blocks from the shop where I'd left him.

I exhale a cloud of smoke. There's a sign across from me that's flashing an advertisement for a tropical vacation. I went to the tropics to kill a guy once. He looked like he was having fun before I took his head halfway off with a garrote.

"Nieren, I need you to go get some info on our target. Whether he runs with a gang, hangs out at a strip club, shoots up in his apartment, any good chance to get him. I want this motherfucker dead quick so we can get back to the job. If there's an opportunity, we can take him tonight."

I look Nieren up and down.

"You look like you could use a vacation."

I walk to my car.

"Call me when you find something."

I fake a laugh, though Oskar doesn't seem to care as he climbs into his car and takes off, leaving me to call yet another cab. This time the driver is an Asian woman who's somewhere between 28 and 52, swearing in a mix of English and Cantonese at every other car in the sky. I tip her well when we get close enough to the tracker for me to find the target on foot, and she tells me I'm alright for a "bak gwai gangster wannabe".

After a few hours of drinking and carousing in his brother's bar, where he gets turned down by the same mesh-shirt-wearing klub kid three times, I watch the target stumble into an alley, and am pleased to see we have the narrow passageway to ourselves.

Before I can think about calling Oskar, my custom Colt Dragoon is in my hand, and my neural interface has smoothly transitioned my vision to include the camera array built into the barrel, now pointing roughly at his heart. I pull the trigger until the magazine clicks empty.

The kid slams back into the wall, which is now adorned with most of what used to be inside his chest. He slides to the ground with a gurgle.

In Neiren's hurry to get this annoyance over with, he makes one critical oversight. There is a camera, recessed into the wall, recording silently.

There's nobody on the other end of the camera. At least nobody alive. Just an algorithm, writing the data to clicking and whirring archival drives buried deep within the city. A mark on a profile with a face but too many possible names. The Underbaz' denizens are poorly cataloged.

"It's done, Avtori. If you need me I'll be at the Zoo, getting drunk with my old bratva." I hang up too quickly to hear whether Oskar replies, hustling myself out of the alley and into a cab.

"I know, Mr. Chenkire. I relayed your orders very explicitly. I'm sorry, sir."

"Next time, do the job yourself. We are not even. You'll have your item in a couple of hours, via courier."

"Thank you, Mr. Chenkire."

Yoshin hangs up the call, his hand trembling slightly.

I try to calm down from the irritation of Nieren hanging up on me like he's irreplaceable while I drive over to Yoshin's. With the job done we can get what we need and move on.

I walk into Happy Petals and right over to Yoshin.

"The job is done. I'd appreciate us completing our business now."

"Oh you did A job. You didn't do the job I fucking ASKED you to do, but that was my fault for assuming you had the English comprehension of a fourth grader. I said a few dozen words about the job, but let me condense it into the two important words and then we can break down how you fucked me.

Kill: A+

Publicly: F

Are you seeing the problem here? If The Bear wasn't in a good mood today I'd be dead myself for your shit. Lucky for you I'm not, and even luckier for you I've even got your shit. Take it, and get out. The next time I see you, you'd better have a big swinging sack of credits and business for me."

I wake up in a familiar room, through a back door and down a hall from the lab where Saskia's Hanged Men would be dividing up product and arguing with her techs over whether the sights on their SMGs were properly zeroed. My head pounded - it had been a long time since I drank like a povessenykh, and both the neural interface and vat-grown eyes PCS put in my head have added an interesting texture to every pulse of pain. Nobody pays me particular mind as I pass through the lab and return to my apartment; Saskia is busy explaining what a grenade launcher will cost to a heavyset gangster whose cybernetic legs look held together with quick patches and prayers.
