GM, 17 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 22:25 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadSo you two are pirate newscasters, Eli the Producer, Shauna the Anchor. You find and break stories that the corp owned media won't. You expose corruption and amorality to the small segment of the population who still cares the way that you do. You face vicious reprisals, and find it hard to keep family and friends close for fear for their lives.
First order of business.
What's the name of your broadcast?

player, 0 posts Thu 1 Sep 2016 at 21:36 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadThe Yellow Sign? Because we broadcast the news that's so awful it made all our competitors go insane. (I may still be shifting gears out of the Hunter: The Vigil books.)
Also some for the New Berlin Arcology setting:
"Times of the Teeth"
"Underbaz Inquirer"
"The Hellersdorf Chronicle"
"The Lichten Post-Gazette"
Are we naming a newspaper-turned-online content distributor, a Fox-style news conglomerate, or the segment our characters produce specifically?

GM, 18 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 22:38 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadWell, do you guys operate alone or is there a whole pirate news network? If it's just you two and some helpers then there only is the one show, broadcast as often as you have news to tell and you've found a space to broadcast out of that won't be overrun with corp lackeys in 10 minutes.

player, 2 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 22:52 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadI like the idea of us being producing a show as part of a larger pirate news network. It could all be done piecemeal -- we might not have even met our fellow pirate newscasters in person before. The network spread out in cells so it's hard for the corps to take us all down. Maybe call the network Argus? Poke out one eye, and he still has a hundred more.

GM, 19 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 22:55 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadOoh, okay yeah. The overall network being called Argus is super cool. Alright good start.
Do you want your show to have a specific focus? I imagine the network in general will be going after corps and their wrongdoings, but some of that is probably like angry talk shows and stuff. I imagine some maniac runs a call-in show. You guys are likely on-location sort of stuff, at least capturing footage and then narrating it later. What do you think made you want to do this? That'll probably guide what your program ends up being.

player, 0 posts Thu 1 Sep 2016 at 21:35 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadThat's real good. I haven't fully decided yet, but with that in mind if I take Believers at creation it will be a group of like 8-10 (at most; maybe only like 4 since we're doing this on the very down-low) intern/cameraman/boom mic dude types that represent our cell, rather than a huge group for all of Argus.

GM, 20 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 23:03 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadYeah it would make some sense if you two are kind of the field agents and then you have a video editor, at least one but probably two cameramen, and a tech guy to handle the streaming and encryption of the broadcast itself

player, 0 posts Thu 1 Sep 2016 at 21:35 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadAs far as personal motivation, my unnamed producer thinks there's a level of unfairness in the socioeconomic systems around him, and that the media needs to hurt the strongest groups around so the weaker ones can grow. He's not overly concerned about how evil the corp is on a relative scale, but he was bitter about how the mainstream media replaced news with entertainment, and while he's probably still amorally fixated on earning enough money to keep the cell broadcasting he doesn't take bribes to turn a blind eye or run a fake story unless he's really desperate.

GM, 21 posts Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 23:27 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadSo his shtick is actually more towards the fact that news should be news, and he's interested in telling the stories that he thinks should be told? That's a cool angle.

player, 0 posts Thu 1 Sep 2016 at 21:35 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadYeah; he doesn't really think he's going to save the world with unbiased reporting, but it's a lot more fun to make a living by exposing the worst of corporate greed than it was to cover thirteen thousand esports events and celebrity breakups.

player, 3 posts Mon 29 Aug 2016 at 05:56 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadOkay, neat!
My Reporter's gonna be invested on a more personal level. They'll be carrying out a vendetta against one or more of the really nasty corps. They're hoping that if they bring enough atrocities to light, people will turn against these corporations. This should provide a nice counterpoint to your character, Eli.

GM, 22 posts Thu 1 Sep 2016 at 21:30 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadAdditional info: There is a hacking group called Der Wachter. Iris has a contact inside that group. They are decentralized and communicate via darkweb-style encrypted chat rooms. Their contact within Der Wachter has provided her with ever-shifting facial recognition fooling facial tattoos, and they have to see their contact ~once a month in person to have their Owned cyberware checked and secured.
After Sikorski took over the police force five years ago, they also ousted the news networks and started one, centralized, controlled network called The Sikorski News Network (they're the most creative).
Okay so, final steps to getting this started:
How long have you been working for Argus?
What is your relationship like outside of work?
Ulrich, Iris is on a crusade of sorts. Has that ever endangered a mission? How did you deal with that? Do you trust them?
How do you find out about stories to follow up on? Does Der Wachter tip you off, do you have a network of friends made over the years inside various corps, is there some kind of database kept by Argus to pull from, or something else?

I may not have specified this before, but Iris' pronouns are they/them.
Iris has been working for Argus for about a year. I would imagine that we get our jobs from a combination of places, but mostly from Argus? Since Argus is a whole network, they probably get tips from their reporters and sources and figure out who's positioned to best cover the story (but I'm sure different teams run down stories on their own as well).
Iris is quite cautious on most jobs, and comes off as a little paranoid. They have the aforementioned facial recognition spoofing tattoos, and also vary their clothing style wildly from day to day. However, if we've ever worked on a story that has to do with Infocomp, they'd be much more willing to take risks. I could definitely see this endangering the mission.
As to the relationship outside of work, what's Ulrich's personality like?

player, 1 post Sun 4 Sep 2016 at 02:02 | The Pirate Newscast Discussion ThreadUlrich hasn't been working for Argus more than a couple months, but he's been living in the Baz for a year - he was on "foreign assignment" for a celebrity gossip show when he broke his contract, convincing several of his supporting crew to quit as well and taking a vague offer to cover real news from an Argus rep.
Sometimes stories come from my drinking buddies; one is a retired Sikorski Security officer who still has an ear inside Sikorski and the other is a driver-for-hire specializing in jobs where you need a hovertank.
I'm not entirely sure what "endangering the mission" is when we're reporting, but Ulrich approves of taking risks to get a story and is unlikely to drop one once we've found it unless he's being rewarded even more for burying the story. If someone finds out we're digging and sends a team around to discourage us he'll only become more convinced that we're digging something good, but if we're offered a better story to drop the one we've got that's a deal he's willing to take.
At least in theory Ulrich is a sharp-tongued, well-dressed, Oscar Wilde protagonist kind of amoral jerk. Overweight but a tad vain, with carefully trimmed facial hair, and an expectation that his friends will banter and not take anything too personally.
