USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
In reply to Storyteller (msg # 1):

Taeko sits in a corner of the Lounge a untouched drink in front of him as he plays softly On a flute.
he does not seem to be playing by the book instead he seems to be playing and letting his mind roam. Yet for all that the tune is soft and gathers people in.
He stops for a moment and gracefully takes a sip of his drink.
he looks around the room, "friends may the music carry you where you wish to be" and resumes playing

Suran enters, carrying a thermos of tea from his room.  He notices the music and approaches his fellow Lt. Commander.  Taking a seat near Takamuko, he listens intently.

Taeko finishes playing and bows slightly over the flute then places it on its rest bar.

Taeko waits politely while Suran makes him self comfortable.
"I was most fortunate to find an Instructor to teach me Suus Mahna, T'Pira quite correctly said". "I should learn the language before I presumed to learn a skill based at the beginning of Vulcans history".
"In a lot of ways it is very similar to Tai Chi of earth."
"Just as meditation has the same basics, though a different practice". "I find that all have some thing to teach and aid me in my life so far"

"You are amassing quite the repertoire of skills, Lieutenant Commander."  The Vulcan was definitely impressed.  "That is a very logical way to drive your desire to learn.  There is a saying on Vulcan that goes, 'Nothing that is is unimportant.'  I have often used that saying to find ways to learn."  He pauses.  "Your playing style seems very interesting.  You don't seem to follow a set pattern."

Taeko inclines his head acknowledging question and compliment in the same elegant movement.
"I can play both to tune or sheet if it is needful. "I sought more to give the beings here  a way to focus their thoughts".
Taeko considers and then adds, "it is true to say that deflection of event before the event happens is a trade mark of my branch of Star fleet"

Taeko gazes into space for a few seconds and continues.
"I have seen the result of uncontrolled aggression and anger, in the Dominion conflict, and I was on the ground at the end."
"I do not want to see such again if I can help prevent it"

"Surak was correct, in much of his teachings."

From earth comes this

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Suran nods.  "You speak the truth.  Fear is the first enemy many of us face."  He leans forward.  "I never got to talk with anyone who took part in the Dominion conflict.  I was stationed elsewhere.  What was your role?"

Re: USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
Chamille sat alone near the largest bay windows, looking out at the unfamiliar patterns of stars painted across the endless darkness of space. She had been listening to the music of the flute, but barely noticed the music had stopped, so entrenched in the display of light and dark before her. She gently sipped at her tea, masala chai to relax her after an interesting day on duty.

She turned her a moment after the music stopped and noticed Suran talking to Taeko. She had wanted to introduce herself to the CMO, but had no interest in interrupting a conversation that was visibly affecting Taeko so much (at least for him), and kept to herself for now. There would be time for pleasantries later. She found herself vaguely wondering where Meg was. Mavrik, she assumed, was likely with the diplomat, Bianca, though she hoped to see him as well.

Re: USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
As if a wish had been granted, Mavrik appeared in the lounge. These social areas of the shhip were starting to feel like a second office to the counsellor. He'd come to quietly observe the mood of the crew allegedly knowing that impatience to leave was getting to him, at least.

At the replicator, he ordered cold Orion tea (well, he just called it tea) and, glancing around, spied Shimmer by the windows. He briefly debated whether to go and talk to her, if he might disturb her, but she wasn't doing anything and that was merely social anxiety on his part. Receiving the grass-green beverage, he ventured over. 'Hello again. May I?' he greeted with an amiable smile.

Sitting beside her, where they could both see out into space, he indicated her cup. 'Good drink?' he asked, making small-talk.

"That unfortunately seems to be far too common."  Suran doesn't prod and moves on.  "I spent most of my career being moved from ship to ship.  I applied for the CMO-Base position to find stability of employment.  Plus, there is much to learn about the Delta Quadrant."  He reached into his pocket and pulls out a small notebook.  "I hope to fill many of these with what I learn."

Re: USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
She glanced up as Mavrik approached her, and she smiled at once in greeting. "Yes, please do," she said when he asked to join her, motioning to the chair as she straightened her posture a little bit. She looked back to the star patterns and for a moment, they sat quietly and enjoyed their drinks. She welcomed the conversation; it kept her mind off of thinking about really how far away from home they were, and how much farther they would be going. "Yes, my favourite," she said as she looked down into the light brown liquid. "Masala chai tea. Literally means 'mixed spice' tea. Black tea leaves with cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black peppercorns, brewed in milk instead of water, with one teaspoon of plain white sugar." She slowly sipped it, obviously enjoying the aromatic qualities of the flavourful spices and tea. "My mother had a pot every day after work. She liked to make it herself rather than have the replicator do the work. When I was old enough to appreciate the supple flavours and nuances of tea, I drank with her. We shared many conversations that way."

She turned her head slightly, eyeing the grass-green beverage in his hand with a slight smile. "And yours? Enjoying it?" she asked.

Taeko smiles, "yes I can see the need". "Please don't misunderstand me Doctor, I have and will fight to defend the federation items ideals and people."
"I am both the shield and the wiling sword of our peoples."
"It is Giri that empowers and moves me"

Taeko sips his tea again, I wish it is the one thing I could install in my young security people.
I have never been sure of Surack's wisdom, as to which touches the fact most accurately.

Re: USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
Mavrik smiled a moment at Shimmer's recollection of her mother, appreciating the custom and bonding behind it. It wasn't something he'd enjoyed much of in his own family. He looked down at his drink. 'The machine calls it "Orion tea", but we just call it "tea"... To be honest, I never had it much back home. I've heard humans complain it tastes like grass clippings,' He sipped his drink, wrinkled his nose at the taste with a crooked smile. 'They may be right. Human tea tastes like boiled leaves, after all.' Sampling again, he decided 'Mmm, I think this has been toned down for the Federation palate. You can also add hot spices for a real kick-you-awake effect.'

Re: USS Hyperion -- Off-Duty Lounge
"To be fair, grass clippings that are fresh have a much more pungent smell and likely flavour to them than dehydrated tea leaves, as a form of natural defense for the grass," she reasoned, smirking as she sipped her tea slowly. "Yes, that sounds likely... the replicator doesn't do masala chai much justice either. Not sweet enough. Sugar brings out the spices in the tea. So if its not sweet enough, it tastes muted." She looked up and smimed at him openly. "If you ever feel like a treat, I could probably remember the recipe for a vanilla chai latte. Frothy but tasty if done right."

'Well, I'll take the word of the science officer and tea connoisseur.' Mavrik conceded with a grin and a bow of his head. He felt comfortable and easy talking to Shimmer, and she was likeable. 'Sure. I can try it next time. And maybe you can try the grass clippings.' he joked, swirling his beverage.

"Oh, I'm no connoisseur," she snickered. "I just really like Chai. Real yea connoisseurs are usually right stuck up. And sure, I'll try it. I'm always willing to try something new. Once." Her eyes danced in amusement as she sipped her tea again. Yes, it definitely needed extra cinnamon next time.

Suran nods and begins flipping pages in his notebook.  "I had noticed some similarities, but did not realize that there were close ties.  I suppose I will have to look into that."  He makes a note on one of his pages.  "I do not misunderstand.  Our line of work contains more than just discovering.  We also have a duty to protect the Federation, whether that involves deploying onto a planet to fight a hostile faction or researching a technology that saves lives."  Picking up his cup, he poured a little water from a pitcher on the table.  "To protecting our people, in whatever way we can."

Taeko stands "to life to duty to federation"
And drains his cub in one go. Doctor would you care to meet a couple of creatures that would have been at home in the deserts of your world
Perhaps then we can also discus a meditation and Exercise time that is mutually beneficial to us both

'Well, I suppose the second time you try it, it's no longer new.' Mavrik mused, whilst wondering what to say next. He continued on the conversational track, with what was probably on everyone's mind right now. 'Trying something new like going to the Delta Quadrant?' he wondered, watching how Shimmer responded as he drank from his cup.
