Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

Background reminder:

You have entered the Sanatorium and have somehow remained undetected, having taken out some robots, a guard in the entryway, and a guard entering the room where you are at.

The person running it appears to be named Dr. Marvin Boot.  The guards appear to be KLC commandos like those who attacked the train.  You are still trying to figure out who murdered LeGrange.  However, provided with the information you just took from the computer room, Zzik'Ti will be able to capture and convict all known KLC members, and neutralise all Vrusks with implants.

Signs have pointed in this direction, as well as strange lights seen from the area, even though there should be no ships coming or leaving.  You also have traced the origin of the strange brain implants to the Sanitorium.  The computer data confirms it all.

You open the door and look into the next room where the voices are coming from, your weapons at the ready.

You see a man wearing a doctor's uniform. He is a tall swarthy individual.

The man is interrogating a Vrusk who seems dazed and heavily medicated, perhaps with telol. Two monitor screens sit on a desk next to a subspace radio. As you enter, the radio is receiving a message that appears to be coded. On the desk are reports. Reams of scientific data are all around.

As the man sees you entering, he looks surprised and then jumps for an intercom button on the wall while grabbing for the laser pistol holstered at his side...

Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

The man sees he is outnumbered and abandons his plan to push the intercom, instead diving for cover behind the desks as he still draws his pistol.

You fire shots at him.  Two make solid hits before he gets behind cover, and you hear him grunt in pain.

"You're making it very hard to kill you," he says.  "I suppose you killed Gartik and took his vehicle and weapons. Very resourceful.  Yet you still know nothing.  Come toward me and I'll destroy all this evidence and you and your friend here."

When he says "your friend," you look at the Vrusk he was interrogating.  It is Sik'Triksta Sa'Shr'It'Rezz, the female Vrusk you saved from thugs on your first night out of the ship during the riots.  She was the one who pointed you to a place to stay, and she worked as a shuttle pilot before losing her job after an unexplained explosion at the colony where she was working.  She had to take up a new post as a monorail technician.  She was very friendly to you.

When she hears your voice, although drugged, she says, "His name is not Dr. Boot.  It is David Dever, one of the founders of the KLC.  He wants to know everything I know about you."

"Shut up," says Dr. Boot (aka David Dever).

Dever also sees the grenade coming his way.  He fires as he dives for protective cover under the desk instead of at its side.  His shots go wide, but this gives you a clear view of him for just a moment.  That is enough to put deadly shots in his head.

Dever goes down just as the tangler grenade explodes behind him.  The tangler also snags up Rezz in its tangles, but she is very drugged.

Your quick thinking with the grenade saved you from having Dever hit the alarm or intercom, so your presence is still unknown throughout the rest of the facility.

Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

It takes awhile, but you begin untangling the dazed Vrusk pilot.

Meanwhile, the others begin scouring the room for information and valuable data.

You find the following:

JACK LEGRANGE IS ALIVE!:  You saw him murdered in front of your eyes as you exited quarantine, but these records show you that he was not killed, but a decoy.  The unwitting double was named Troy Trans; this is who you saw killed at the starport.  Even worse, you find that he was killed at the direction of LeGrange.  LeGrange has convinced all of Kraatar that he was actually killed, when he in fact had previously fled to Artemis Base on the moon.  That was part of the strange sightings of spacecraft leaving this area.  LeGrange had hoped that his "murder" will tip the balance of Vrusk-Human relations from antipathy to civil war.

LeGrange is currently at his secret base on the moon Setarz, making the final preparations for the release of the deadly Fumiga Virus, genetically engineered to affect only Vrusk, into the atmosphere of Kraatar. This will kill off ALL the Vrusk inhabitants, and in the ensuing chaos Legrange will "return from the dead" to take up the leadership of "his people".

Dever's calculations and experiments unearthed a fact which (had you not killed him) Dever was about to transmit to LeGrange:  Unknown to Legrange, the virus will react with Kraatar's atmosphere to threaten all life forms on the planet. One week after being released into the atmosphere, the virus will have killed all Humans as well.  LeGrange doesn't realize this and still plans to release the virus.

The Fumiga Virus:  Legrange discovered a deadly virus which appears to affect only Vrusk, killing all who come into contact with it within 6 hours. He intends to release this into Kraatar's upper atmosphere, but, unknown to LeGrange, the virus will mutate into an even more deadly strain. This new strain will kill not only Humans, but most other life forms on the planet, turning Kraatar into a world devoid of life in a week.</b>

You also learn the following:

As an expert in bioengineering Legrange has supervised extensive alterations to his form. His skeleton is enhanced with the equivalent of an internal exoskeleton . Legrange also has a tight-beam computer link implanted in his brain, which allows him to communicate with all computers on Artemis Base.

Jack Legrange was born at his parents' farm in the Quazzt's Depression on Kraatar 60 years ago. His early life was spent working on the farm, but at the age of 18 he entered the hospital in Gozzorf as a medical student. It was here that he first became involved in antiVrusk activities and, along with David Dever, founded the Kraatar Liberation Corps. For 8 years he studied at the hospital, and secretly organized attacks on Vrusk installations and trade houses. He was forced to flee Kraatar after the RIK raided a KLC meeting at the hospital. Legrange escaped to the starport and boarded a starship but most of his fellow conspirators were caught and imprisoned.

After fleeing Kraatar, Legrange wandered around the Frontier taking any work he could find. A successful prospecting expedition provided him with enough money to establish Trojan Enterprises. Since its foundation, Trojan Enterprises has expanded rapidly, with LeGrange's work on bio-engineering and cybernetics being in great demand. His recent advances in the technique of limb and organ regeneration have earned him science's highest award, the Fulbourn-McCoy prize.

No-one had suspected that Legrange is involved with the KLC. In fact, he is supplying weapons to them and financing their activities. Eight years ago, he established the High Peaks Sanatorium (where you are now) on Kraatar as a front for the KLC. The clinic provides psychiatric and physical therapy to over-worked Vrusk. All Vrusk who enter the clinic for treatment, undergo a "minor" operation, under the cover of stress-alleviation therapy. During the operation a control device is implanted in their brains. The device affects neural impulses and enables a creature's brain to be pre-programmed to carry out certain tasks

The Fumiga Virus:  Legrange discovered a deadly virus which appears to affect only Vrusk, killing all who come into contact with it within 6 hours. He intends to release this into Kraatar's upper atmosphere, but, unknown to Leg range, the virus will mutate into an even more deadly strain. This new strain will kill not only Humans, but most other life forms on the planet, turning Kraatar into a world devoid of life in a week.

NOTES ON DESK

On the desk is Dever's half-finished investigation regarding the likely effects of the missile on Kraatar's ecology. Reams of scientific data describe the nature of the missile's payload, its development at the mining base and the plan to release it into Kraatar's atmosphere. It then goes on to consider the effects of the virus on Kraatar's ecosystem, but this section is inconclusive. Using your party's  environmentalist skills and studying this for 2 hours (yes, it takes this long to free It'Rezz from the tangler), you realize the enormity of the devastation that the missile will wreak on Kraatar's ecology, including the destruction of all life.

You also remember that Dr. Tariel Nuna told you that LeGrange could be very helpful in helping solve the Datasphere sent by the "Shadows of Rakon" regarding the imminent multidimensional attack on the galaxy being orchestrated by the Qantariate, through coordination with the evil race of Sathar.  Tariel had been very saddened to learn of LeGrange's assassination.

After hearing all of this Rezz offers to fly you to the moon.  She heard there was a ship somewhere at the Sanitarium, as well as a lot of weapons and artillery, if you need it.  But being a hostage, she doesn't know where.

We're going to have to go and get him and we're going to try and have to take him alive!  If Rezz is wiling to fly us up to the moon to get him, we're going to need to find their weapons cache here.  Let's get cracking people.  We need to find out if there's anyone else left in this place left to defend it or liberate them."

"I know I shouldn't be saying this, but we need to go to the moon. If we get this information organized so that it points out just how deadly the virus release will be to humans, and then get close enough need to dump it into the computers at Artemis base, Le Grange may balk at releasing the virus. Since that information won't come from you, you'll be able to approach Le Grange and ask for his help with the datasphere. We Vrusk can hide on the transport, I suspect Doc and I could both use some down time."
S'Krllk makes a curious circular motion with his secondary arms, then goes on, "when the universe is trying to kill you, it's just its nature. When the pirates start whacking you with the electro-whips, they're just doing their job. But when your own kind start treating your friends like sub-sentients, it gets a little depressing."

Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

You remember searching the garage area earlier and finding something unusual.

Quote from message 154 of Day 10-2:
You really don't find anything helpful in the garage.  It's just a lot of parts and tools.

But then you search the inspection pit and find something unusual.  There is a concealed doorway down there.  It appears to be alarmed.

(Requires a tech to unlock a level 2 alarm.)

You begin collecting information and documents, and copying files.  It is while you are doing this that Dever's radio goes off.  "We found something, boss.  There's been an explosion at the entryway, and Beedo is dead.  Boss?  You there?  We're coming up."

You gather the last of your things and leave before more of the mercenaries arrive.  Rezz takes you where she thinks the armory is, which is on the same floor (floor 1) and down the hall.  You hit the jackpot!

You are in a room full of weapons and items of war, almost as if stashed here for a military operation.  You have your pick from the following:

400 powerclips
51 power beltpacks
22 laser rifles
37 power backpacks
37 laser pistols
17 gyrojet rifles
28 automatic rifles
46 automatic pistols
3 machine guns
1 recoilless rifle
1 rocket launcher
3 swivel mounts*

Ammunition:
342 bulletclips for the automatic rifles
475 bulletclips for the automatic pistols
207 jetclips for gyrojet rifles
50 machine gun belts
25 recoilless rifle shells
23 rockets

Grenades:
20 doze
40 fragmentation
20 incendiary
25 smoke
30 tangler

Defenses:
120 skeinsuits (100 military, 20 civilian)
28 albedo suits
30 inertia screens
25 albedo screens
10 gauss screens
3 sonic screens

Miscellaneous:
500 grams of Tornadium D-19
50 variable timer/detonators
70 vials of solvaway
200 allweather blankets
50 infra-red goggles
10 infra-red jammers
50 breathing apparatus
20 magnigoggles
12 radiophones
10 toxy-rad guages
100 holoflares

There are also 10 military sized backpacks and "kits" for storing weapons and ammo.

As you peruse and drool over the weaponry, you hear boots as a number of soldiers exit the elevator and run to Dever's office.  But you are around the corner, so they don't see you.

However, if they need weapons, you are pretty sure you know where they will come to get them.

Noting the others gearing up gets Orvo out of his reverie. He sets up the machine gun he was fondling on a table in the back of the room facing the door so that any who come through the door will have to do so through a hail of bullets.

He already has a laser rifle and a pair of laser pistols. He chose a power backpack for his rifle, enough power beltpacks to power his pistols and albedo screen with a few spares, and several powerclips. Orvo attaches as many grenades as he can to the military skeinsuit.  He also takes some solvaway, a toxyrad gauge, infra-red goggles and infra-red jammers.

In the end, he is loaded down, but he feels like a bad ass from the vids. He goes back to the machine gun and in a low voice says, "Let's rock."

Re: Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

When the security forces arrive, it isn't much of a battle.  You mow them down easily, having already taken out their leaders and much of their crew.  They had been running to the main office, but the arms room faces the main office.  Firing at them from behind, they barely stood a chance.

Six armed security guards go down.  You are not sure if there are more around, but this is all that answered the alarms.  The security guard commandos all have tattoos of the KLC on their arms.

After packing up the gear you want, you go back down to the garage and the secret tunnel.

The tunnel is long, taking you 175 meters to a door that is propped half open.  From the other side, you hear a woman humming softly.  You peak inside to find another garage.  This one has two unarmed explorers.  There is a human woman laying under the explorer fixing something from below with an open techkit on the floor and spare parts on a workbench.  She hums softly while she works and does not see you since she is laying on her back half under the explorer.

The garage itself is 12 meters x 18 meters.  Directly across from the door where you now stand are giant security doors 6 meters wide.  They are locked shut with what appears to be voice recognition locks.

Instead of obeying, the woman pulls hard, and her entire body rolls under and to the other side of the vehicle.  She is on some sort of rolling body cart.  "You won't take me alive," she says as she disappears.

Then you hear a click from somewhere on the far side of the security door.

Hopefully, there is one!

OOC: Would this count as a martial arts attack? I'm thinking along the lines of a football body check maneuver to slam the mechanic against the door and stop her from opening it and escaping. I'll leave the mechanics in your capable hands, GM Heath.

There, he finds another security door shutting in front of his eyes.  The mechanic has just gone through.  As the door shuts, he notices it is a level 6 voice recognition lock.

Hammer finds a voice recording and plays it back.  He is able to open the voice activation lock.  (Near critical success on open security lock roll.)

The door opens up and you find yourself in a 12 meter rock cavern carved into the mountain.  It leads north, where it narrows into a smaller tunnel less than two meters wide that then cuts hard to the right.

However, you have bigger problems to deal with now.  A KLC security robot is coming your way from the narrowing part of the tunnel, turning its guns on you.  You have a good guess who pointed it in your direction.

Porter is hit with the flames.  (12 STA damage.  Porter is signed but not aflame.)

Porter runs after the commando woman while the flames are put out of Hammer and Desi.  Hammer suffers an additional 3 STA damage, and Desi suffers an additiona 5 STA damage.  They then chase after Porter and the woman.

The cavern twists to the right and then straight again.  By the time you start catching up to her, you have run nearly 300 meters through the wide cabin.  At a long straightaway, she starts firing back down the hall as she runs forward.  The shots are going wide as she shoots behind her.

She is running toward an area brightly lit by the sun above.  The area is about 50 meters wide and round.  It takes a moment before you realize it is carved out of the bottom of a meteor crater.  There appears to be some sort of spacecraft in the wide open area, but it is covered with some sort of camouflage net.

You are about 30 meters from the opening to the large round area.  The woman is running around the spacecraft.  You hear her giving orders to attack the intruders as she disappears behind the shuttle to the northwest side.

It'Ress, in her wounded state, is following behind you, but at a much more slow pace.  The injured Vrusk pilot urges you to continue and she will catch up.

Or rather, what she was talking to...

Another combat robot is coming your way.  This one rolls on treads, is 8 feet tall, and has four arms.  Each arm bears a weapon of one type or another, and you see the pointy ends of small rockets sticking up from behind it, indicating it has rocket launchers of some sort.  A glow surrounding the robot also indicates it is electrified and probably is covered in some sort of skeinsuit, albedo suit or the like for protection.

This is not your average combat robot.  This was put here to stop intruders once and for all.

Sorry for the delays. I've been traveling.  I also noticed not a lot of response since the last post with the combat robot.

Porter and Hammer run clockwise around to fire from cover.  Both open up on the combat robot.

Desi is burnt but still in the game, as are Orvo, Kri'lik, and S'Krllk.  The pilot is following slowly behind you, too weak from the torture to fight.

The robot fires from its four arms toward the mouth of the cavern.  Desi, Orvo, Kri'lik and S'Krllk duck back behind cover as lasers, automatic weapons fire, gyrojet rounds, and flak cannon cinders fly by into the wall.  The combat robot is also raising its rockets to fire in that direction.

From the other side, Porter and Hammer fire, hitting the combat robot and doing some damage.  It turns its body (but not the missiles) towards them.  It appears that next round it will be firing on Porter and Hammer with its fire power and at the cave entrance with its missiles.

Desi and Hammer continue firing.  Their fire takes down the combat robot, and its fire goes wide.  Its missile fires deep into the cave, exploding deep into it and rocking the whole station.  You are fairly confident anyone else in the sanitorium would have heard (or felt) that blast, especially since you now here it followed by a cave in that rumbles all around.

With the combat robot down, the large cavern is clear.  Only the shuttle remains.  Luckily, you have a recently fired shuttle pilot with you.

Porter removes his gas mask in order to be better heard. "The entrance is over here," he calls to the rest of the party.

As the door opens, he resecures his gas mask and readies a doze grenade. Machineguns aren't great for close-quarters combat, and might damage the ship. If the mechanic woman is hiding aboard, he'd rather not have to fill her full of lead anyway. She might have valuable information.

S'Krllk jogs to the downed robot, both to insure it is no longer a threat and to salvage what he can from it. Opening the robot and removing whatever power sources and ammunition he can, he attempts to determine if it is still mobile.

Re: Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

Desiraye gives a loud sigh of relief as the robot is finally taken out.  She knows she hasn't been in this bad of shape in quite awhile, perhaps since Volturnus?  Regardless, there was still some more fighting to be done here.  She disconnects the mostly depleted SEU backpack from her rifle and carefully shrugs it off of her shoulders trying not to injure herself further.  She looks to S'Krllk for support as she attempts to stand and reloads her laser rifle with a fresh 20 SEU clip.

The ship hatch opens but the ship itself appears to be empty.  No sign of the woman who led you here, and no other exits in the round landing crater that you can see.

Porter calls to the party, "The place seems clear, but watch out. The woman we followed may still be hiding somewhere around here. Let's check out the ship and prepare to launch."

Porter enters the ship and has a look around.

"Roger that Sarge.  You take the lead.  I think I'm reduced to sitting back on this a little due to my current wounds.

Everyone else, switch out clips and mags for weapons and defenses.  We still have a fight ahead of us!"

Porter shrugs, ignoring the burns and wounds he's taken getting this far. That's military life, after all. If he buys it on this rock, at least his sacrifice may help the others reach their goal.

Into the ship he goes.

OOC: Down to 18 Sta myself, but c'est la vie. If Porter dies, I can just roll up a new PC.

Once they are safely in the ship, Kri'lik administers healing relief to Porter with some stimpaks and whatever else he has handy or can scrounge up in the ship.

While Doc works o Porter, Desiraye looks back to the others, "I need someone up with me to help me clear!"  Desiraye shoulders (slings) her laser rifle and draws out a pistol before entering the ship.
