Welcome folks!

Getting the last bits of things setup - the map is completely set now and the Landmarks have been generated.  You can read which landmarks are available and a generic description of their purpose in: 6.F (in the rules list)

I'm hoping there will be a wiki this time too, not just a rules-list, once things get properly going.
The wiki was very convenient.
I can't really demand it, it's more work than you strictly need to do, but it was, like I said, convenient.

I'll be doing both - but, for an easy reference list - a single page is REALLY easy to view - and a lot of folks prefer it - makes CTRL/CMD + F easier than having to click around everywhere.  But, for having exactly what you want to read on the screen - wiki is definitely nice.

Re: Discussion Zone

Welcome, Jakob!  The game's been in testing for several years, but we keep updating it.  There are enough updates in this version where it will feel like a bit of a new game to those of us who have been playing it already!  So, it's still anyone's game!  The game can be pretty deep, so make sure you ask Narrator if you have any questions!  He's pretty good about explaining things!

And above all enjoy it!

Much obliged Rasjesh! =)

I hope you have tons of fun Jakob Algrove and everyone else!

I'm hoping to get closer to being started this weekend, but, I understand that not everyone will be ready - and heck, aspects of the rules sections may not be at the rate work is happening =)

But, please please please please - ask questions - as Rasjesh said - ask!  I'm more than happy to answer.

The main keys right now are setting up your leaders, and your first Unit.  You may use your gold to buy anything in the standard 'marketplace' (Section: 7.G in "The Rules" link to a message in this game)

Re: Discussion Zone

Do donkeys consume food now?
I don't think they do, but since it's now 'each set of mounts' rather than explicitly 'horses' that eat extra, I feel I should ask.
If I'm right, then presumably 'mounts' also refers to stuff like riding-lizards or whatever, that we might find as some unique item.

Do Ranged Weapons still give bonuses in melee combat?
They actually don't say anything about ranged/melee combat, but presumably that is/will be found under the actual combat rules rather than the weapon-bonuses.

What do Spyglasses do this time?
My best guess is that they're actually renamed, probably to 'Torches', but it's possible I'm wrong and there is still a Spyglass tool.

Related to the previous question: Is it intentional that a lot of the new tools aren't available to buy?
I could understand not finding a Holy Writ in some random village, but we can't find a torch?

Oh, and what are 'construction tools' now?
Saws only?

Re: Discussion Zone

Correct - Donkeys do NOT consume correct.
Yes - Unit Mounts (Horses) - DO consume food (1x Food per "Unit worth")
Yes - you can "fluff" (describe) your mounts however - as riding lizards, or what-not.  AND, yes - there are "special" mounts as well.

Ranged Bonuses do not give bonuses to Melee Combat. (unless you have a special ability which says otherwise.)

Spyglass is still a Tool (see: 4.B9 Scout) (also see: 7.G "Marketplace")
It's a +4 to scout (I need to write that in directly here soon.)

Yes - it is VERY intentional that you can't find some/most of the new tools.  They are NOT available in the Cities (remember: "ON map CPs") but, most will be available in the Settlements (remember: Off Map CPs).

Saws = Construction Tools. (See: 4.B2 Build)

Re: Discussion Zone

I actually had a question about reading the tables on the stuff you can buy. It seems to be saying that the more reviled stuff costs more and you get less. Is this what I'm actually reading, or is this the relationship to the town?

Also, do we start with any standard supplies other than the gold?

Re: Discussion Zone

I'll answer backward.

You begin with just the gold - so, yes - you will need to buy Food and the like, unless you intend to be scouting Plains or buying from Cities early-on.

Regarding Attitude & Costs.

Attitude only changes the COST, not the QUANTITY. (at least not directly).
It appears to change the quantity for resources - because of decimal places.  Since the game doesn't allow decimal place gold values - because it's just too much tracking: it's easier to enforce a certain "amount" of minimum trade.

Thus:
If you enter a new Settlement, and are Reviled with it, but, you want to buy Stone: you would pay 1 gold for 1 Stone.
However, at Standard rates; you would pay 2 gold for 3 stone (thus, it really is only changing the cost.)

Regarding other items - I will find a way to get them all "charted-up".  One of the advantages of the wiki was being able to 'slice it up' a little more neatly, at the cost of having to click all over RPOL to find the information.

But, it will get up there.

Re: Discussion Zone

In reply to Jakob Algrove (msg # 12):

It's more that the better your relationship with the town is in terms of Trade, the more favorable the pricing is for you.  So, if your trade status with a town is at Reviled, you get shitty trade prices.  But, the more you trade with a town, the better trade status you have "negotiated," so you get more favorable trade conditions.

You start with the gold, but you go to the Marketplace section to spend what you want of the starting gold on materials available in that chart.  You don't have to spend it all and can save some (in fact, I'd recommend you do so in order to pay for upkeep and a new unit, if you want one when the first month actually starts.  Can't get one right away before the game starts, but you can hunt one down during the game itself).

If you don't have your Stat thread (STT) and OOC threads setup - Please let me know as soon as possible.  If you need help copy/pasting in anything - (such as Room or Unit stat blocks) - let me know.  They *will* be posted in the Game wiki here soon (everyone can use the 'edit' function on the wiki to pull down the room stats.)  The wiki will have these "quick blocks" ready in about five minutes from this post.

Re: Discussion Zone

Question: Is this meant to be 'Saws'?

8.D Renovations

What do you need to Renovate existing Rooms?
At least:

    1 x Unit,
1 x Saws (must be equipped onto at least one of the participating Units),
    Stone.

The amount of Stone needed is:

    Stone = 5 x R + 5
Where R = Current Renovation Level of the Room.
+ (If an Intermediate or Pillar Renovation) the individual Renovation cost.

Example: You have a Watchtower, which is Renovation level 3.  Attempting to construct the next Renovation (the 4th) would require 20 Stone.

It is possible to perform more than one Renovation on a single room in a single week.  For each additional Renovation, assume the next cost-increase as the required Stone. (Thus, if constructing two renovations - the 3rd and 4th level -> You would need 15 AND 20 Stone - for a total of 35 Stone.)

Each time any new Renovation (be it Basic, Intermediate, or Pillar) is completed, the total Renovation level is increased by 1.

Just write in your pieces with what they're going to do.
Ex)

NameStartActionTargetEndNotes
Leader 1 Assist
Leader 2 Diplomacy  Buy Items
Unit 1 Build  Barracks

The start space is which grid space they start at this week.  Target is which grid space they are going to.  End space is where they are ending their turn (usually back where they started).

The opening is just to give you some RP.  You can write a narrative response like a roleplaying game.  It tends to make the game more interesting than just throwing orders and results back and forth.  Plus, since the quests tend to be tailored plot-wise to the RP, it allows the GM to tailor make some of the RP to your characters.  It's pretty cool.

Hey gang - I hope everyone is doing well!  Sorry that some of the responses were so late on Friday, work-is-what-work-is.

That being said: if anyone is needing help posting their responses, please let me know.  I know it's not completely easy or obvious to grasp all of the rules at once (and, I really don't expect anyone to.)

Some key points: the responses are responding to the new information presented to you - that is: if you find an offer for recruitment, receive trade offers, or training offers: your Response Post (that is the 2nd post on a given turn) allows you to respond to those offers and take advantage of them: you do not return on a subsequent week to get them.

That having been said - this concept is clearly not immediately intuitive - how would you know to what you can and cannot respond?  To that end: beginning on week 3 - an "*" will be placed next to segments to which you are expected to respond. (such as adding XP and the like.)

For those folks who have not updated their responses yet - remember, this is the fourth week, which means it's upkeep week - after you process whatever gains/losses from the turn, then calculate the amount of upkeep paid.

(Most Units/Extras are: their Upkeep cost (usually gold) + 1 Foodstuffs (per Unit, Extras don't usually require food).)

Also - if anyone was curious on the "TBD" (To Be Determined) indicators when you first find new Settlements: you will only find out what those TBDs are once you actually trade-with them.  As the Settlement grows, the additional item/resource will become available for trade.

Also, I'm finally back from traveling a bit (wife dragged me along to attend some weddings, blahblah), so hopefully I'll be a little more "present."

I will be updating turn posts shortly.  Remember folks - it's upkeep time - so, total the upkeep (1 food per Unit and then total gold upkeep values) and annotate the costs in your in-game posts.

Re: Discussion Zone

Hey folks - thank you for the well-wishes.

I am back and hopefully in action.

The rules for the Council of Usurpers are posted:
http://wiki.rpol.net/?id=66962/Council

I will be tallying the VPs shortly, and posting the Arbiter's initial summons to the council.  PLEASE, take this as an RPing opportunity and a chance to actually "play" with the other Usurpers.  I know this is generally a "solo" game-feel, by its nature.  But, I do hope everyone can take some time to enjoy the skullduggery, dealing, and machinations aspect to the game.

For those who have not played previous rounds: the Council of Usurpers is a lot like the United Nations council in the Civilization Series of Games (or the Planetary Council in Alpha Centauri).  In the first round of discussion, Each player gets to put in their opinion on which topics should be discussed.  Then, in the second, everyone votes on those topics.

It's an opportunity to (semi)-permanently alter the rules of the game in your favor.

Welcome back, my friend.  Good to see you're doing ok.  I've got another medical exam tomorrow, but I should have some breathing room until late November after that.  Just let me know what our schedule is going to be like during the Council stage.  I don't want it to drag on too much, and I'll only have a couple green-lit days of activity during each week.  So, I'm not sure how it will work for me to really RP much in that stage.

That being said - VP totals are posted.

Will be posting the first message in the council thread shortly - after that everyone is allowed to begin chatting and voting.

Please be sure to read the Council rules: http://wiki.rpol.net/?id=66962/Council

This is no joke.  LTC Rajesh's luck (in all previous games) has been utterly horrendous.  Some dizzyingly good rolls, but, his dice-roller is like Babe Ruth - 20 rolls- all "1 or 2", then finally a roll of 95.  It's awful.

Re: Discussion Zone

For that matter, I'm somehow in 2nd, even though I wasn't really 'competitive' towards the end of either previous rounds (the ones I were in, I mean) - I think the closest I got was having a chance to win with at least a month of extra time and a lot of luck.
But, people shouldn't worry too much if they're behind this early on.
Maybe consider shortening your timeframes - you might be wasting time - but you'll need some degree of luck to win anyway; There's several good players here, and it's probable at least one of them will get a lucky break.

EDIT: Oh, and 'Narrator': Could we know how many, if any, of the failed players fell to things other than abandoning the game?
Later on, I'd prefer you did not reveal such information, but this early I'm curious if anyone actually managed to get killed off.

Yes -  in order to prevent every article that gets a single vote from being enacted - each Article must have at least Positive 5 (5 yeas) going for it to be enacted.

Thus, if an Article has 10 Nays, and 13 Yeas - it will not be enacted.

But, an Article that receives 5 Nays and 12 Yeas - would be enacted.

The hardest part this round has been balancing life, sadly.  I think everyone, in general, is a bit busier than last year.  Myself included.  A year-and-a-half ago, I had a work-from-home job.  It was pretty sweet, but, mind-numbingly simple.  I was able to finish three degrees at the same time.

Now, back in the real working world - I spend WAY too much time commuting each day.  Thankfully, that ends after this weekend. (well, save for a few trips to do some spot cleaning of the current place.)

We're working on a "Narrator's Toolkit" and later -> a version where narrators can readily run the game for others in a working hosted environment.

I've databased almost everything, now I'm using this as an opportunity to learn some basic coding concepts.

I'd love to be an alpha tester for their game, if they pick it up. Other than that, it's been a crappy month for me honestly. I had strep throat, and right as I was getting over that I got some weird stomach/sinus bug, and then I started getting over that and got food poisoning yesterday. It's been a wild ride.
