His features cloud slightly as he thinks of what to say, "Well if you go to Durango, the city, folks are more understanding. Out here in the little towns, not so much. The people in San Hares mostly know. Doctor Henningsen went and came to a town hall meeting to try and answer everybody's questions and smooth ruffled feathers. Didn't turn out so good. That big black guy, Dennis I think his name is, had to pull the Doctor out of there. The town's leaders aren't doing so hot with the people, either, but the school pays a whole lot of money in taxes."

I know some of us were hoping that we wouldn't have to stay hidden, but we don't want trouble either. I guess I won't try joining up with a church choir then."
Once clean, he moves over to the bed of the truck. He carefully climbs in making sure not to damage anything in the process.
"Mr. Slate, you've been straight with me and I appreciate it. If you could ever use my help, don't hesitate to ask. Along with being heavier than I look, I'm also stronger."

He gets into the driver's seat and starts the truck, then opens the small rear window so that he can still talk to 聲gel and says, "You know, actually, maybe you should find that church. Make some friends, get to know people around here, and then when they realize you're a mutant, they'll realize that mutants aren't all that bad."

As Mr. Slate drives, 聲gel relaxes in the truck bed. He enjoys the feeling of air rushing over him. The periodic bumps rock him slightly, but he easily remains firmly seated.

Durango has a lot more, of course," Larry says thoughtfully, "If you're Catholic, I can swing by and pick you up on my way in, take you to the mass I go to. You uh, might feel more welcome at the other Catholic church, though."

(8/29/15)"Well, there's a couple of people, and only a couple, that might give you the stink eye," Larry explains, "The other church is primarily Mexicans, though, so nobody would mind. They even have services in Mexi- in Spanish. I don't think they'd do anything, just so we're clear, but most people don't like being glared at, so..."
He leaves it at that.
The drive isn't very long, even though Larry isn't driving very fast, and 聲gel can clearly see the house now, and it's pretty close.
"Somebody waiting for you, Angel?"

When they stop in front of the mansion, he hops out of the truck. Fortunately the suspension of a work truck easily handles his weight. He moves over to the driver's side door.
"Thanks for the lift Larry," he says. "If you don't mind I'd like to visit your church with you. It'd be nice to have a friendly face around. That would make up for the stink eye from a couple of people. If it is a problem, I'll just go to the other one."

He glances over at her and sees her neutral smile. Turning back to Larry, he says, "She's my friend, but I've only known her a couple of days. She's not... I'll invite her. See you then."
His face darkened by an embarrassed blush, 聲gel turns and walks over to Tammy. "Tammy, Larry Slate. Larry, Tamera Bradford. Larry works on the turbines that provide power to the campus."

"Larry seems cool. He's going to take me to visit his church," he says. "Would you like to come along?"
Before she can respond he gives a faint growl of irritation. "Sorry, I'm too curious. How did you know I'd be showing up and need a towel? And do the guys think I'm some sort of lunatic?"

So when I realized that you were roughly where I remembered seeing a pond, and running out of breath, I figured it out pretty quickly."
She looks him over thoughtfully, a warm golden white light shining in the backs of her eyes, "When I focus, I can get a lot more. I can count your heartbeats, monitor your blood pressure, or even take a peek at the mix of chemicals in your blood or brain."

"The fear of drowning did. I needed to breath, but I couldn't swim to the surface. Somehow that broke through the feeling of disconnect from the world that I've had for a while now. It made me feel... alive."
He looks away from Tammy. "Could you do me a favor? Keep a watch on what's going on in my brain. Is this part of my change? Or is it normal."
