They're digging for information and what they can't find they'll guess at.
"Now I find out there's a military school nearby working with mutants. Training them to be some sort of super-soldiers. Our powers have been classified and ranked by their military usefulness.
"If you want us to trust you, to be honest with you, you have to lay it all out for us. We need to know where we stand. Emily is already half-convinced that we're going to be lined up and shot and I'm not far behind her. And because of Tammy, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.
"If you were one of us, what would you be doing right now? How would you feel?"
