Re: Dorm Chat
He gives Tammy a one sided grin as she giggles at his tail.

"Believe me, I wish I knew how I could make it stop doing that. It has taught me to sympathize with cats.

"Ah, San Francisco,"
Tony says, "that makes sense. I went there with my family once, but the whole place was really pricey. We got to see some of the sights, like Union Square. We also caught a baseball game where the San Diego Padres---my favorite team---played against the Giants and actually won."

"I've heard about the X-gene," he continues, switching subjects, "but scientists are still figuring it out. Plus, it seems like an awful lot of coding for just a single gene---kind of like what you'd expect in comic books or something."

He takes Tammy's phone and begins taking down the info on his own.

"Yeah," he replies, following Tammy onto the subject of minorities and transgenders, "I know what you mean. I get the feeling its a perspective thing. It's easier for some people to look at things from another's point of view, and harder for others until something really shocks them into it."

When Tony finishes, he gives Tammy back her phone. He considers what Tammy says about her attempt to analyze the others' abilities

"Thanks. Okay, I think I follow you on your powers. Like, a rough hypothesis might be that the toll your ability takes on you are directly proportional to the information you get, the activity of the powers, or both. This would be a good chance to test out your hypothesis on at least the passive powers part. As far as I know, mine don't have an intensity. What you see is what you get.

"Wait,"
he says suddenly, as he realizes what Tammy said above, "college loans for your brother AND you? I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you already go to college? I thought we were all high school students?"

OOC:

Sorry if it seems like I've been ignoring conversation hooks. Tony is too polite/anxious to follow up on some things---like Tammy's Mensa score, or having more intense physical contact with Angel---because he doesn't want to intrude. The college loan, though, is something he's more willing to ask about.

Re: Dorm Chat
"Well, this is high school, which I haven't finished yet, but like, that's not a good reason to skip putting the loans in your long-term budget, especially since I turn eighteen in February," Tammy says with a casual shrug.

"As for the X-gene, I think it's like, entirely plausible that the rest of the stuff is in other genes that are normally dormant in every human being, the junk DNA. Considering all the other weirdness we've seen here, who knows? It might cause some special RNA to be made which isn't even reading the rest of the DNA at all, or it might read it in a complex order instead of straight through. I think by the time we really start to figure this out, people with quirks are going to be more common than people without them."

She takes a deep breath and adjusts her legs slightly before she adds, "Speaking of which, I'm going to try to use my quirk now."

She closes her eyes and breathes slowly and deeply fo several minutes, so calm looking that she could be mistaken for someone who is sleeping if people slept sitting up with their back straight. After a few minutes of this, she shakes her head and opens her eyes again. The faint golden glow suffusing the normally black depths of her eyes runs counter to her next statement.

"I don't think it's working. Nothing is popping into my head that I didn't already know from what you said about your sharp ears and nose and claws."

That's quite alright, if slightly sad because of the lost potential for comedy! =^.^=

Re: Dorm Chat
"Ah, okay," Tony says when he hears that Tammy is talking about the future.

"For a moment, I thought you had already gone to college. I was hoping to ask about it. I'm only 16, so I have a few years to go. Or, I had a few years to go...not sure if I can have a full college experience like this."

Tony furrows his brow and scratches his chin. He considers what Tammy says about the gene and junk DNA.

"You mean, if the X-gene is causing other dormant genes to express themselves? Then, I guess that makes more sense. Especially if those junk-DNA genes are different alleles that express when the X-gene turns them on..."

When Tammy prepares to use her "quirk," Tony sets up his smartphone to record. His eyes go wide when she starts glowing. His head cocks to the side. His tail perks up, standing up straight with the tip curving down into almost a question-mark like shape.

He slumps down when he hears her answer. As before, his brow furrows as he thinks about what that could mean. One hand scratches his chin while the other drums its claws on the ground.

"That could be good news," he thinks out loud, "because it could mean that I'm done transforming. I was worried about turning even more into an animal. I mean, that'd be fun as a lark, but only if it were reversible.

"But, didn't you say you needed physical contact, too? Do you need to, like, hold my hand or grab my arm or something?"
He holds his arm out to Tammy.

"Of course," he adds wryly, "if this is just an elaborate excuse to touch my fur...you could have asked..."

OOC:

Yeah, sorry about that. As someone who is an anxious awkward nerd in real life, these are the best characters for me to play. :-p

"I said that I think the reason I already knew 聲gels was because of spending time with him and physical contact. I know about as much of how this works as you do," she says, looking at him with the curious expression of someone who thinks they're missing something.*

She shrugs and holds out her hand, "Anyway, let's try this and see if it makes any difference, shall we?"

* - By the way, the glow was very subtle. Tony could easily see it, but there's a possibility that Tammy didn't notice anything strange since she's talking like her power didn't work at all.

"Well, we're testing some hypotheses, right?" Tony says with a smile. His ears are perked up, and his eyes are wide and bright as he continues talking.

"Sorry, I love experiments, and this one is kind of cool---we're using powers! I mean, you glow when you use your quirk. Like, a faint golden glow. Maybe it reflects how much of your powers you are using? Maybe it reflects how much information you can collect? I'm not sure, but we can at least see if we have a correlation between it and physical contact."

"Dude... This is crazy," Tammy says as she watches her own eyes light up in the recording.

After staring at it closely for more than a minute she hands Tony his phone and heaves a rather relieved sigh, "And here I was like, stressing out that I might not belong here, after all, you know? Even when we first noticed that I'm like, psychic or whatever, I kinda felt like I wasn't really quirky enough, but I guess I am."

Growing thoughtful again she adds in a quieter voice, "I kinda feel like there's more to this, though."

Re: Dorm Chat
"Hrm... That makes sense, especially since all the other quirks people have seem to run on a theme, like, Emily can do a bunch of different things involving glass, or like how the antisocial guy with the loud music across from me, Jeremiah, has metal bits in his body so he presumably has some control over metal."

Tamera shrugs and continues, "There's no reason mutation itself would be off the table when you have people like David warping spacetime, or people like Donato who can make quantum duplicates of themselves."

She looks down at her open sketchbook and sighs, "Something tells me that I won't be able to like, completely suppress someone's quirk. But maybe I can figure out a way to suspend it for a little while, long enough for the people who are having a hard time to get certain things done properly. And by the same token, like, maybe I can temporarily prod someone's X-gene into functioning. If I can also sense what a person's quirk would be, then with my help people would be able to do things they couldn't normally achieve."

A broader smile creeps across her face as she says all this, her hand reaching out to rest on top of the sketch of 聲gel, before she sighs quickly and shakes her head, "First things first, though. We should see if physical contact makes any difference, and we should see if we can determine just how long my range is somehow."

"Yeah, and Blake's and my powers are based on some kind of animal/creature form," Tony adds.

"All right," Tony says. "What do you want to try first. Want me to step back and see if you can sense my abilities from range? Or did you want to see if physical contact makes a difference? Also, if you can temporarily stop my mutation...could you try? It might give me some insight on how to figure out a way to suppress it on my own---through meditation, willpower, or something. Also...well...I haven't seen my real face in a long time..."

Re: Dorm Chat
"Hrm... Well, my intuition is that close contact won't really make a difference when I'm trying, but it might when I'm not trying, you know? So let's see if we can test how far my range is, first."

She resumes her meditative posture and takes a deep breath, "To start with, let's see if I can sense any of the other students."

She closes her eyes and after a few dozen seconds of silence and slow, deep breathes, she quietly states her results, "There's 聲gel... and Blake... I can feel Emily and... That's odd,  I can feel Miss Olensson and Mr. and Mrs. Henningsen and..."

Her eyes pop open, displaying an identical glow to the one before as she turns her head towards the town and hesitantly asks, "Hey, Tony? You don't suppose that everybody in San Hares is a mutant too, do you?"

Re: Dorm Chat
Tony's ears twitch when he hears Tammy name off Miss Olensson and Prof. Henningsen. However, he only starts to look confused when she reveals her findings. His eyes go wide, and his jaw drops as he tries to think of something to say. His tail perks up again, and takes on a question mark shape as he considers the question.

"I...I dunno," he stammers. "I guess...I mean, I guess it makes sense that some of the adults at Dr. H's school could be mutants, too...but the whole city? That's either a crazy coincidence, or something caused it---like some sort of mutagenic event or after the fact planning..." His voice trails off, and a smile starts to tug at the side of his face.

"That means I might be able to do some exploring in town after all," he thinks out loud. His smile grows wider.

"Looks like we've stumbled on a mystery. Want to solve it together? Should we get the others? Oh, and how comfortable are you with temporarily borrowing things?" Tony's eyes get bigger and his smile grows wider with each question he asks...

OOC:

Tony's complication is insatiable curiosity. This might be a good segue to pull in the others and vamp until the Bystander pops back up. ^_^

Re: Dorm Chat
"Or my quirk can sense more than mutants," Tammy suggests, rising to her feet.

She immediately regrets this decision, the sudden motion causing her whole body to waver before she falls forward and her hand collides with the wall, providing some measure of stability.

"With a little effort, I can distinguish men from women and adults from children... I'm not sensing any other quirks, but they're all so faint and from here they're like, clumped together, but... Oh... That must be David."

She turns to look at him and adds, "Lets not like, get ahead of ourselves. Your heart rate is elevated entirely too much, too."

Re: Dorm Chat
In a flash, Tony is at Tammy's side and offering her his arm and shoulder for support. He moves quickly, as if animal instinct tells him how to preternaturally react.

"Well, those are also possibilities," he concedes, "although not nearly as exciting. So you're not detecting other mutations or powers, but you can detect life forms? That's fascinating. But it also looks fatiguing. Maybe you should sit back down."

When Tammy remarks about his heart rate, Tony gives a good-natured snort-laugh---sounding stranger coming out of his uniquely shaped nose.

"I thought I was the one with super hearing," he jokes. Once Tammy is steady, he takes a seat.

"Anyways, I can't help but get excited. Ever since I changed, I've been stuck indoors. The trip here was the first time I had ventured out and about in ages. Add a little mystery into it, and I've got something to focus besides Khan Academy videos or slashdot posts."

Re: Dorm Chat
"Maybe I should sit, yea..."

Tammy manages to very slowly lower herself back down with her hand on the wall the entire time, pulling the cushion she had been sitting on over to her and sliding it beneath her, so she can continue to lean on the wall. She closes her eyes with her back firmly to the wall.

"Fatiguing isn't the right word, I think. There's just so much information flowing through my head. It's making me dizzy, as if the cramps weren't bad enough," she says with a small sigh, "I could probably give you a complete physical with just my mind. Professor Henningsen will be so jealous!"

Re: Dorm Chat
Tammy waves it off, "I've had dizzy spells for years. I always thought the weird mess of thoughts that come with them were just like, random brain noise. It goes away in a little while if I just sit still. I think that's enough experimenting for today, though."

"Which just leaves me wondering what to do now," she says with a sigh, "In the city, I would probably be out in a park drawing, or visiting a gallery, museum, meet up, or people watching. And that's assuming my friend Mary didn't find time to drag me away somewhere, though she hasn't had many chances lately."

She cracks an eye open and peers foggily at Tony, "Say... Do you like anime?"

Re: Dorm Chat
"Yeah," Tony agrees, "you're right about ending experimenting today." He leans back and listens to Tammy.

"Well, the view from the top of the mansion is nice. You can see the moon, the wind turbines, and the mountains. I went up there after Donato got tired of exploring. Looks like there's access from the attic, but I didn't test it out. It's just easier to climb up the walls.

"I like some anime,"
he replies, "usually the high-concept trippy stuff with giant robots, crazy aliens, vampires in space, or space battles. However, I've got a soft spot for a new one that I stumbled upon called 'Himouto! Umaru-chan.' I don't have brothers or sisters of my own, but I'd like to think we'd have a goofy relationship like that."

Re: Dorm Chat
Tammy giggles softly.

"I asked because I was thinking of hunting Blake down and seeing if he wanted to watch a show. Assuming he hasn't been watching it already, which is likely, all things considered. He made me think of it earlier when he commented that things taste funny since his change... A character in the show explains to the main character at one point that herbivores like her have very refined taste buds while carnivores like her romantic rival have very poor ones - which is why she can't cook! You might have heard of it if you're keeping up with everything this season. It's called Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou. It's a bit... pervy, but it's pretty funny and some of the characters are great."

Letting her eye drift closed again she adds with a small shrug, "We could grab 聲gel or Emily too, perhaps. Anybody, really, but I only have four cushions and something like that is probably not the best choice for people who are new to anime."

When Tony knocks on his door and tells him about Tammy's invite, 聲gel nods. "I'll be there shortly."

He gets up and carefully puts his bible away. Stepping out into the hallway, he closes his door behind and heads to Tammy's room. He knocks on her door and enters if she invites him in.

"Tony told me you want to watch something. Sounds good to me."
