In the Hallway: IC chat with NPCs
Sometimes it's handy to get ahold of your teachers, grown-ups, or even other teens who aren't attending the school.

Emily waits until the rest of the students have left before she gets up quietly.  She pauses at the threshold to the hall trying to make up her mind before giving a small shrug and making her way back through the manor and out the entry doors.  She gives the darkening sky a quick glance before hunching over and moving quickly to the third currently unvisited building.  Arriving at the doors she gives them an experimental tug before slipping inside.

The third building is about half concerned with the strange rotating garage. The other part is split into two halves.

The first half is locked. The door has a sign on it reading:

INDUSTRIAL ARTS
Student Admittance only with Faculty

The other door is unlocked. Emily opens the door and peers inside.

It's dark, but she finds a light switch. At least, it appears to be a light switch. Her first try causes a mechanical grinding from above. The metal grating over the skylight begins to retract, letting natural light into the room from above.

With a bit of light, Emily can see the room more clearly. The floor is hardwood. It is an open space filled with colourful abstract art on the walls. A few folding chairs are leaned against the wall, but there are no desks.

At the far end of the room are two closets. From the dimensions of the building compared to the current room, the storage closets must take up nearly as much space as the open-plan classroom.

One closet is labeled "Art Supplies," and the other is labeled "Instrument Storage."

She glances around the classroom as light fills in the space with a bit of curiosity giving the art a quick glance but once the letters on the closet doors become readable Emily abandons her examination.  She drifts across the floor to the Instrument storage closet and gives the door an experimental pull.

The door opens.

The air inside the room hisses briefly; it is humid in there, compared to outside. It smells like wood.

As her eyes adjust, Emily sees racks of musical instruments. An acoustic guitar, a bass guitar, several cases for reed instruments, a keyboard... a wide variety of musical instruments sit in the climate-controlled closet.

"Huh.  That's kind of more than I was expecting." There's a vague twinkle of excitement in her eyes as Emily steps inside closing the door behind her.  She lightly runs a hand over an acoustic guitar with a small smile as she examines the String section more closely.

Outside Dr. Henningsen's Office

Tony stares at the door, nervously wringing his hands. He goes to knock on the door, but hesitates and pulls back. He turns away, as if deciding to leave. However, he stops himself, balling his hands up.

"No, I need to ask," he says to himself.

Gathering up his courage, Tony goes over to the door and knocks on it.

"Dr. H? Are you there? It's Tony. I just had a few questions I wanted to ask..."

The door opens and Professor Henningson stands behind it. The tall, dark-skinned woman is wearing her lab coat. This may be another one; it is spotlessly clean. There is an ID badge hanging from it for a university.

"Yes, Mr. Torres. Here for your physical?"

Tony jumps a bit, taken aback that it is Professor Henningsen who answers the door.

"Oh, uh," he stammers, wringing his hands as he recomposes himself.

"Um, yeah. I guess so. I came here to ask a few questions, but I can do that while I take my physical as well I guess...

"I actually, um, came here to ask if...well...if there's any chance that we'll get diplomas or high school degrees. I kind of had a plan on what I wanted to do in my life, like finish high school, go to college, maybe even go on to grad school in a STEM field.

"Also, um," he adds softly, "I was wondering if you might have the facilities to change me back to the way I was..."

Emily carefully paws through the strings and finds a violin and a harp, each nestled in a durable plastic case.

Professor H ushers Tony into a sterile hallway of white linoleum and soft blue walls. She puts him into a room reminiscent of a doctor's surgery.

She sits him down on the table and starts taking his vital signs. Her hands are firm and controlling, in a detached, professional way.

While she listens to his heart, she answers.

"Yes, Mr. Torres. We are fully accredited. I am even authorized to provide college-level credits for advanced courses. But you're not ready for that, yet." She counts in her head while speaking, an impressive feat.

In the Laboratory

A faint grin tugs at the edge of Tony's mouth at Professor H's mention of him not being ready for college level courses. His nervousness disappears for a moment, replaced by the hint of self-confidence in his intellect.

"Maybe not," he says, "but I'm always up for a challenge. Even before this happened, I've always been smarter than I looked. At the very least, advanced classes would give me something to take my mind off of...well...this."

Upon returning the conversation to the subject of his mutation, Tony hesitates for a bit before continuing.

"I'm sorry to keep bothering you while you're taking my vitals, but...you didn't answer my question... Is there...well...a possibility of turning me back to normal?"

The professor dispassionately prepares a syringe to draw Tony's blood. She glances at him as he asks the question.

"Mutation is caused by genetic factors. They're inborn. Still being studied, but it seems to be linked to a specific gene. Call it the 'X-Gene.'"

She briskly rubs his forearm with an alcohol swab, taking almost thirty seconds to do it.

"We may be able to control your powers. But you will always be a mutant."

The door doesn't open on its own, but Dr. H approaches from behind. "Oh. Hello, guys. Here for your physicals? Great. I'll buzz you in."

Dr. H opens the door using his card key and fingerprint. The door slides open.

You enter a sterile hall and walk past a few doors. "Right now there's another student being examined, so we'll begin with the parts of the exam I'm qualified for."

The doctor brings you to a pair of washrooms and asks you to wait. He goes and gets something, then comes back.

Dr. H hands each of you a package. Inside is a sort of workout jumpsuit; short-sleeved shirt and knee-length shorts.

"These are your Academy gym clothes. I thought we could use them for the physical, rather than ask you to go get changed and come back."

"Had you told us you wanted to do a fitness test, you could have attached your sensors or whatever before our morning run. But I'm up for a marathon today if that's what you want."

聲gel takes the PE uniform. "I'll get changed then." He steps into one of the washrooms to change. A minute or so later he steps back out in the uniform. "I left my normal clothes in there, is that okay?"

"Brief cardiac assessment, yes. Go ahead and leave your clothes; this won't take long." He leads you into a room with two pieces of furniture: a treadmill and a giant press.

"Okay. We'll start with Mr. Castellano. Stand on the platform, please." Dr. H gestures to the blue hexagon on the floor. It is directly beneath another blue hexagon on the ceiling, attached to some sort of hydraulic apparatus.

聲gel looks at the blue hexagons and the hydraulic cylinders for a moment then steps onto the platform. "Why do I feel like a mouse willingly stepping into a mousetrap?"

"Not really, I feel some pressure but no pain," he says. "Even when Blake hit my it didn't hurt. Fire and heat still cause me pain, I found that out being careless when pulling stuff out of the oven. But even that didn't really injure me."

OOC I envision anything he's impervious to won't cause any pain. But if he has to make a Toughness save, he feels some amount of pain just less than most people would. Toughness 9 is well beyond normal human.

Dr. H stands at a computer set into the wall. "Hands up. Press against that hex as it comes down."

Indeed, the device begins pressing down. The harder you push back, the harder it presses down.

Back in the exam room, the Professor finishes her physical exam. "You have very unusual vital signs, Mr. Torres. I'm going to draw some blood now. Hold still, please."

Getting blood from under the fur might be a challenge, but Professor H has an IV in place in moments. She draws four vials of blood and then bandages you up.

"Very good. Neil will have more tests for you soon." She turns away from you. Apparently, you have been dismissed.
