"Again, I'm sorry about earlier," 聲gel says. "Larry seems like a nice guy, he just... you know."

Tammy blinks at 聲gel a few times, then starts giggling again.

"It wasn't a bad assumption. Who else would be waiting for you with a towel after you take an unsanctioned dip in the pond? But more importantly, like, what was all of that about going to a church?"

"Point taken," 聲gel says. "Church? Oh, yeah, my mom used to take me every Wednesday and Sunday for mass. I joined the choir the year before she died. It remained a tie to her and I kept going after she died even though my abuelo wouldn't go with me. He sort of blamed god for what happened.

"After my change, I fell through the wooden choir risers. Fortunately Father Maradona blamed it on old wood. But that wouldn't work again so..."

He shrugs. "I haven't been in a church in almost two years. I still pray and read the bible, but it's not the same. I loved the community of the church. I loved singing in the choir even though I wasn't good at it.

"The people here know we're mutants. I asked Larry about churches nearby. He gave me a couple of options, one being the church he goes to. He said, I'd likely draw some stares, but it shouldn't be too bad.

"By going to church, I let the locals see me in a human light. I give them a chance to know me and not fear me. Eventually I would like to join a choir again. Talking to you has helped me realize how unhealthy it was for me to isolate myself so completely."

Tammy suppresses another bout of snickering as 聲gel replies, before turning thoughtful as he continues on to the topic of the church and religion. She's silent for a long moment after he's finished talking.

"I haven't, like, had a particularly good track record with religion. I grew up in a family of intellectuals, you know, people that are basically scientists in mindset. So, it's like, really hard to ignore certain things about the religion, any religion, and just go along with it, because it doesn't make sense to me. Like, I tried Wicca for a little while, and without thinking I started talking about how I thought it was fascinating that the religion was made up by this dude named Gerald Gardner, and like, three of the other people in the coven lost their effin' minds over it. I still don't understand that. Like, I understand the event, but I don't really understand why it happened. I legit thought it was kinda cool how it all came to be, like, I was basically praising him."

She falls silent again for a moment as she thinks, "But I also think that maybe you shouldn't go alone. You just met Larry, right? So it's not like you know him very well just yet. Not to mention, none of us know the area. But I can find the way back here pretty easily if something happens, so like, I think I should go with you anyway."

Her hand is still on his arm.

"If you're worried about my safety, you shouldn't come along. You know my quirk, I can handle most physical threats and I doubt anyone around here is ready to deal with me yet. But I don't think Larry wants to hurt me and I would enjoy your company." He gently puts his hand over hers. "I like talking to you."

He goes silent for a moment then shifts topics. "As for religion, you don't have to understand it. Or even believe it. I'm not sure I believe in God. I look at my faith as a guide on how to be a better person. The church provides a community and a way to connect with others.

"I'm not a scientist or even all that smart, but I'm not stupid either. The Church isn't perfect, I disagree with a number of positions the Church doctrine still holds. I'm pro-choice and haven't a problem with the LGBT community.

"This is a way for me to connect to the people here. To reach out to them through a common interest. I don't want them thinking we're some weirdos hiding out on this campus doing who knows what.

"Now, if you do come with me, we'll need a signal for when you should back off on a topic. Many people don't want to think about their faith, they don't want to question it, they just want to believe it. Upsetting that can upset them."

Tamera's smile turns somewhat sardonic as she says, "Oh, I learned my lesson from that long ago. I was only thirteen at the time. I might have learned it too well, honestly, sometimes I really feel like I should speak up and then I just... don't. Like the whole thing the other day about the food pyramid? Yea, see, science demonstrated that thing was wrong in the nineteen fifties. This is especially damning since the food pyramid was invented in nineteen ninety-two. Ms. Schutz is clearly not a nutritionist."

Tammy sighs, then her smile broadens just a hair before she just up and leans over against 聲gel, resting her head against his shoulder.

"I like talking to you, too."

"Speaking of which, like, I was just thinking earlier that you probably don't have a phone, so, would you like to use mine to call your Abuelo?"

"Thanks," he says. "I'd love a chance to call him. But I don't want to use up your minutes or whatever you have on your plan. I had thought we'd have phones in our rooms. Maybe I can get a part-time job so I can afford a phone."

Tamera's grin grows just a bit wider and she almost snickers.

"聲gel, it's twenty fifteen, unlimited talking time on mobile has been a thing for a while, and our plan even has unlimited data, too," she says, poking him in the side while she's at it.

聲gel laughs a bit. "Sorry, the only cell phone I've ever used was a pre-paid Tracfone. And that was a few years ago, my abuelo's business isn't as good as it used to be. He doesn't touch modern engines. He's sort of set in his ways.

"But since you have unlimited minutes, I would really appreciate a chance to call him."

"Jeez, now I feel bad for trying to have some fun at your expense. I'll like, put the phone number and stuff for you, so you don't have to worry about breaking it," she says, before doing exactly that and giving the device to 聲gel.

She continues leaning on him for the entire conversation.

聲gel smiles at Tammy, "Don't worry about it. I know I'm out of touch with things like smart phones and computers. Feel free to remind me of that. It gives me another reason to learn."

He tells her the number and takes the phone from Tammy. He listens to it ring and when his grandfather answers, he smiles.

<Spanish>"Grandfather! It's 聲gel. I arrived and I'm okay."

He listens for a bit then speaks up again. "No, I don't have a phone in my room. This is Tammy's, sorry, I mean Tamera Bradford's cell phone. She's another student here. Yeah, another mutant, there's actually a number of us here."

He smiles as he listens for a bit. "No, they're not like me. Everyone has different abilities it seems. I haven't seen the military around at all. Don't worry grandfather, I'm fine. I'm safe. How are you? Don't forget to take your pills."

聲gel and his grandfather chat for a few minutes as 聲gel catches up on the local gossip. He briefly talks about the trip and what he's seen of the school. Eventually they run out of things to talk about.

"I should let you go grandfather," 聲gel says sadly. "I love you and I miss you. Yes, I'll visit when I can. Goodbye."</Spanish>

He hands the phone back to Tammy. "Thank you for that. It was good to talk to him again. I wonder when I'll have a chance to visit him."

"De nada," Tammy says as she takes her phone back and tosses it onto the charging pad.

"I think we'll get breaks on like, the normal school schedule. I'm not sure if we'll get flown back home by the school, though. Hrm..." she looks thoughtful for a long, then half shrugs, moving only the shoulder that isn't leaning against 聲gel.

"Gives me another reason to ask about getting a part time job. Having some money would be nice for a number of reasons," he says.

"You've been really nice to me. You've listened to my issues, let me call my abuelo, and everything else. How are you doing? You didn't even know you were a mutant until recently. Are you okay?"

He's careful to not move and disturb her as she leans against him. His arm moves slightly as if about to wrap around her shoulders, but stops quickly and returns safely to his side.

"Mrm, I think so. Like, it's still processing a bit. The first thing I felt was relief to be honest. Like, I was totally worried that a mistake had been made, and I was the only quirkless student here. That would have been terrible! Not only because of all the money the school wasted, and all of the time, but because then I would feel like I was rubbing it in everybody's face just by existing, you know? And on top of that I can't figure out how they would know I'm a mutant with a quirk like mine. Maybe they did a DNA test at the hospital after my accident?"

She sighs and turns her head so that she can look up at him, "I'm a lot more worried than I let on. I don't like it when people keep things from me. In my family, we're really open about everything. We don't even close our doors very often or anything, hence the standing screen I put there for privacy. But somebody has to put on a brave face, encourage everybody and help them feel at home, and there's no reason why it can't be me, and several reasons why it ought to be me."

"But even you need someone to talk to, to confide in. Someone to lean on from time to time." he says. "I'm not as smart as you, but I'm not an idiot. And I'm actually rather perceptive and full of what my mom used to call uncommon sense."

He looks down into her eyes. "You're used to having your family supporting you. If I can do anything, let me know. I want to help if I can."

She lowers her head, nuzzling into his shoulder before she adds, "And stop hesitating. I totally felt your arm about to move."

"When I was fourteen, there was a girl I liked and she liked me. We went out on a couple of dates, it didn't last. Her family moved away and we lost touch. So, not a lot," he answers. "What about you? Have you left a trail of broken hearts in your wake?"

Tamera giggles softly to herself as she lunges for her phone, and then taps on it like she's on a mission, "I'm just amused. I've only had two partners, but I might have more experience dating girls than you."

Then she turns her phone so 聲gel can see the screen. It shows a photo of Tammy, albeit from a couple years ago, with her head resting on the shoulder of a gorgeous black girl with long straight hair. They're both smiling brightly.

"She's very pretty," he says hesitantly. "I wish I could say that didn't catch me by surprise, but it did. Being raised Catholic results in some programming that's hard to overcome. I don't have a problem with it, I'm just not used to..."

He clears his throat and resumes talking. "Who is she? What's she like?"

Tammy giggles some more, "It didn't work out because, no matter how much it disappoints me, I'm straight. It really sucks, because gals are just so much more interesting than guys. No offense. We're typically curvier and bouncier and snugglier and in most cases, we just make more freakin' sense than guys."

From the way she sighs and the above average animation in her hand gestures, she's clearly quite frustrated with this.

"Her name is Keesha, and I hear she's graduating at the top of her class and going on to a nice college with a scholarship, but I haven't spoken to her in a while. We mostly just keep tabs on each other over Facebook and Twitter now. Last I heard her life goal is to be a psychologist, an addiction specialist. Her mom is an alcoholic, so."

She shrugs and leaves it at that.

"For the most part I agree with you about gals being more interesting then guys," he says in a warm almost amused tone. "But to me guys are far easier to understand. We're pretty straight forward, until pride gets into the mix, then all bets are off. We can go all caveman in seconds when our pride is hurt."

He chuckles. "I'm happy you're straight. I'm sorry you're disappointed about it, but I'm happy for my own selfish reasons."
