[Argus] Infirmary

Kessar Cindull, the only medically trained crew member aboard the Argus, usually sees to minor injuries here in the Infirmary. If you need a bronchial infection cleared up, a wound stitched up, or a crazy bout of insomnia seen to, this is where you need to find yourself.

The past hour after exiting the Dirty Dutchman had been something of a blur to France, and he sighed as he slumped back down in the bed. It came out through only one nostril. He tried to tell the others that his injury wasn't so severe, that he had worked with a broken nose before. Hell, one time he worked with a fractured collar bone. They had been insistent that he get checked out, perhaps to check for internal bleeding.

France wasn't fond of all the attention; he did what he had to do, nothing more, nothing less. And besides that, he wasn't fond of infirmaries in general. They smelled too clean. At least, from what he could tell from his one functioning nostril.

"Is KC your doctor?" Gus inquired, tapping the note.  "She seems to be out at the moment.  Maybe just an ice pack?"

From what he'd seen of the ship on his short tour from the airlock to the infirmary wasn't necessarily bad.  The ship was on the small side, old, and definitely not kept in mint condition.  On the other hand it wasn't held together by string and bubblegum as far as he could tell.  At least from what he'd seen.

The deck plates were clean and he hadn't seen any signs of vermin thus far so that was a plus.  He'd seen a working maintenance bot trundling along on some task so that was good as well.  He was, however, disappointed that they didn't have all of the regulation safety placards clearly posted.

The Medbot responded -
"Please come in, Mr. Gomolka. You have injured yourself. I am authorized to dispense pain medication, and to dress your wound. Please come through the Medcenter Airlock."

Note: I think an airlock and decontamination hall would be standard in case of micro-oranism infestation. There would be another such system getting into the Medbay, as it would allow for a quarantine when necessary.

"That'd be Mr. Cindull, first name Kessar. Good doctor, has some sort of combat medic experience." Sully grinned. "Though at this point we may as well sign him on as another engineer considering the hours he clocks in the Engine Room."

It was at that moment that France realized he was lying down not on a bed, but on the bit of hallway just outside of the decon hall. Perhaps he had been hit harder than he thought?

France hauled himself into the Medcon airlock, somewhat embarrassed. Reluctantly, he submitted to the Medbot's demands, wondering where Kessar was.

The medbot used an osmotic compressor to "inject" a pain killer directly into France. Had Kessar been there it would have been overridden and he would have gotten a bottle of booze instead. Once it took effect the bot began to work on his injuries...

Leave it to you how easy or hard the treatment is...

The painkiller coursed through France's system, dulling his senses and rendering him groggy. It was at that moment that France remembered another fun tidbit from his orientation training: that pain nullification injections and alcohol often don't mix. His insides churned and for a moment he feared that he might vomit, but instead the intense nausea "merely" caused him to pass out. He was almost thankful. Almost...

Later, as he came to, the first thing he saw was his reflection in the medbot's strange, unblinking eye, and he almost wished that he had stayed passed out.

(from Chapter Two)

"Welcome back, France.  Is there anything that you remember that you might want to tell me?"

The soft alto voice came from Cassie as she looked at the reawakening mechanic.  She had been there for a little while watching the medbot at work.  Whatever happened to France didn't appear to be serious enough to keep him from making it back to the Argus.  That and the fact that the medbot was already working on France meant he probably wasn't in any additional danger.

France could see Cassie's face, but only barely through his hazy vision. The last time he was pumped with painkillers like this, his eyes watered and his joints swelled up so bad that he sweat right through his jumpsuit; even left an embarrassingly noticeable puddle. He wasn't very popular that day, and he dreaded whatever bodily function would decide to go renegade on him this day. He lamented that his age was starting to catch up with him, and not at all gracefully.

His voice was strained, as if through a straw: "I remember...urgh...I remember...some sorry sod tryin'...trying to...he was going for Sully...and...ulgh..."

Again, he wondered whether it had been worth it. At least someone noticed this time...

Cassie listened to France as he tried to describe what happened.  "Ummm.... You got mugged?  You got into a bar fight?"  She made a mental note to ask Sully what happened that caused the discoloration to France's jaw.  "It really doesn't matter, as long as you made it back in mostly one piece.  As the ship's basic blunt object, might I suggest that next time you want to block a punch, use something other than your face?"

"Urgh...something like that."

France tried to focus himself, unsure of which Cassandra he was supposed to look at. He had always liked Cassie; she was a tough lady in every sense of the word. He was mentally kicking himself for showing weakness around her, or at least what he thought was weakness.

"It was...it was some drunk, I think. I don't know, I just...I just got between him and Sully...at least no one else got hurt...right? No one else? Just me?"

Cassie put her hand on France's shoulder.  "Just try to relax.  You've earned yourself a break.  There is something you should know.  I'm very proud of you for putting yourself at risk to protect another member of the crew."  She heard the concern and uncertainty in his voice about what might have happened to the others.  "I don't know if anyone else was hurt.  I'll find out and let you know.  Please try to relax, France.  I've got this."

France mustered up a nod as he drifted back into unconsciousness. Even though he didn't quite catch all of it, Cass's words were still reassuring on some base, primeval level. It provided him some comfort as a silent darkness overtook him.

France got hit in the head, yet was drifting in and out of conciousness.  Cassie has been in more than her share of altercations.  Maybe her skull was thicker than most, but what was happening to France didn't seem natural.  She took off to find Kess.
