1800 Hours (6:00 PM)

Kessar realized that Odette would not being having dinner galley. This was not unusual, she often got so absorbed in her work that she would forget to eat. It was kind of adorable. It also gave him the opportunity to eat alone with her, which he relished. Today he had two covered containers, one in each hand, and four soft drinks, two in each pocket.

He found her at her work bench, bent over and humming while working. He stopped, unable to pass up the view. After several minutes he cleared his throat to get her attention.

Odette turned round, and blinked. This was a profound sight, given the huge size of her eyes in the magnifying goggles she was wearing. It made her look almost part fish. She pushed them up with one hand, and gave a tight grin. "You know, you should wear a bell or something. I never can hear you sneak up on me. Take a seat!" She lifted a box of odd looking small parts from various gadgets, and dumped it off to one side. She then remembered she was holding a laser probe. She tossed it over her shoulder carelessly. Instead of landing on something and breaking with a rather expensive little crunch, it flipped over, and zipped very neatly into a rack of other small tools hanging over the desk. Homing Tools. The technology was old, but had mostly only been used for frivolous things, like small personal items that could never be lost once you programmed them to return home when not in use. Given how often the crew had been subjected to the phrase "Has anyone seen my yellow handled screwdriver?" down the years, Odette had decided to solve the problem of wandering tools once and for all, and with her usual inventive flair, had stolen someone else's idea and actually turned an expensive toy into something really very useful.

She hopped up and sat on the bench. "Thanks. Is it that time already?" she examined the little chronometer tied to her wrist. "Doesn't time fly when you're having fun? What mysterious delight have we got today?"

Kessar lifted a brow. "A bell? Ahh..." He walked around and put one of the containers in front of her and the other for himself. Then he grinned and pulled out the soft drinks. They were from his personal supply. He sat with her and nodded to her question, "Yes, 1800. I always know by 1745 if you will be in the galley."

He nodded at her time flying comment. His next comment was a bit sarcastic, "Sausage Spaghetti  Surprise. Don't ask what the surprise is. A salad, oil and vinegar dressing."

He looked around and almost smiled, "Did you blow anything up today?"

Odette bravely risked examining the food in the container. "Well, it is identifiable, at least. But I am not even going to ask what the sausage is made out of. Some things are meant to be left unknown by the mind of mere mortals. Best to just eat it and think of happy thoughts until it's done." She popped open one of the cans. "I haven't blown anything for at least a month now." Her face, so very straight. Deadpan. "But I am getting frustrated with a project I am working on, so I might just blow it up and be done with it. I hate it when something that absolutely works in theory falls apart in practice. Mostly because this old boat has been rewired and patched up so many times, there are things going on inside her that quite beggar belief."

Kessar opened the can too and plopped the pasty sauce onto the noodles. "Barely identifiable. Actually this is gourmet quinine compared to what they fed us in the Navy. And besides..." He glanced at the cans of soft drinks, "There is a bright spot."

He couldn't help it, the sarcasm just spilled out, "Oh a whole month now? Wow..." He switched to a serious listening face. He gulped at the last bit of what she said, "Yea I think there are things I am better off not knowing."

He inhaled trying to summon up courage that had so far eluded him. "So...uhhh...what are you planning to do at Yukon Gypsy?"

Odette ate a mouthful and, despite her disparaging comments, was perfectly satisfied with the food package. After all this time in space, you could get used to anything.

"Well, I am trying to find a way to divert power from the primary coils into the tertiary, for long-haul flights, thereby extending the primary fuel rods, while lowering the output of the tertiary coils, and bypassing the secondary coils entirely. It should maintain the systems for longer, as each system is exposed to less power overall, and with the tertiary coil output reduced, they can actually be rigged to act as manouvering thrusters, but at sublight cruise speeds, giving even a creaky old girl like ours much greater flexibility and steering power. In theory, it works. In computer models generally, it works. On the Argus? It doesn't. Because somewhere in the mess of bypassed wiring and hastily patched up maintenance ducts, at some point, someone has done something which means I can't divert the power where it needs to go. So if I want it to work, I'm going to have to spend a few days deep in the bowels of the ship, hunting for which of the gazillion string and tape repair jobs is the one causing the problem."

Which, given her love of wriggling about inside places where people really should not be wriggling within a ship, she would probably enjoy considerably. She took a long drink, and brought herself back round to the point of the conversation. "I have to go and do a few actual work things. Cap'n Kara will need me along with the actual details of our finances while we actually, you know, buy things and earn our living. After that, though, I was thinking a few drinks, maybe cruise the retail outlets. Whyever would you ask?" Innocent face again. Not fooling anybody.

Kessar understood most of what she was talking about. Someone had once compared the engine system of a ship like theirs to the body but the whole thing broke down quickly. Still he understood the principles involved, and it actually made sense. The largest expense they faced were fuel rods and anything that extended their lives was worth the time she was putting into it. He was thoughtful for a bit and then suggested, "Squidy. Get Alan to send that bucket to help you, who knows it might even be useful."

Then she got around to his question. He suddenly felt very warm. His hands started sweating, his mouth and throat went dry. He could stare down the biggest toughest dock thug you threw at him, but the idea of asking this petite woman out made him feel like he was a twelve year old boy staring down a bully. He was on the spot. He desperately searched for a way out. His mind conjured up dozens of lame things he could say. He found his mouth acting on it's own, though. "I...was just...thinking...you might want...to get something to eat. With me. Something nice. Like...uhh...you know...a ummm....a...like you know...a date."

His eyes went wide like he was expecting something to happen. Like the universe was going to turn inside out...or worse she would say no. A few heartbeats and no black holes opened up underneath him. He actually felt relieved, he had finally put it into words. Of course there was still the other half, she might say no. What if she said no? Would things get awkward? Would she no want to spend time with him anymore? His eyes were so wide. He had to grab his pant legs to keep from chickening out and pretending it was all a joke...

Her views on working with the Squid went unmentioned, as she quickly examined her meal in close detail. "Well... alright, then. That would be nice. If we get the chance. You know what Yukon is like, we spend half the time running around in circles, and the other half running in the other direction. But we should manage some time for a quiet meal. I'd like that."

Of course, they had to closely examine the plating, and then there were fuel rods to service, and she wanted to get into the power system to see why the experiment was not working, and... But yes. Actual life instead of just work. She really needed to try that!

Odette's response was very...female. It seemed at first like she was playing it off, but really, at least in Kessar's experience, she probably just did not want to seem too eager. He let go the breath he had not even realized he was holding and came as close to smiling as she had ever seen. "I've wanted to do that for weeks but I could never get up the courage. I kept thinking about how terrible it would be if you said no and then didn't want to spend any more time with me..."

He stared at her, a bit too long but not uncomfortably so. It had happened before it would happen again. "So, when we dock you and Kara will go and do the whole ship keeps going thing and then when you get back, if there is time, then I'll escort you some place nice. There are really only three choices at Yukon, so I guess it is up to you: Chinese, Italian, or Ickonarian."

Kessar had a thought which was kind of random but went back to the fact that she had to buy things to keep it running. "Just so you know, we need Vitrosomax very badly. By the time we reach Yukon we will only have three doses and we need nine a week, minimum. If someone does an EVA or reached into the core and plays with hot fuel rods, then they have to take an extra dose. I believe we should have no less than 12 doses per week on hand. Please pass that along. Everything else I can ration and stretch out, but Vitrosomax is absolutely essential."

He took another bite, giving her the opportunity to answer his question and the statement about Vitrosomax.

"Surprise me. I'll eat most things, to be honest. After a few years as a student, and then more on the Argus, any decent food is a very welcome change. I mean, we eat well enough for a ship crew, but something not reconstituted is a change worth making. I'll let you have a free hand and see what you come up with." She ate more pasta. Growing up, she had access to some of the most exotic foods imaginable. She did not miss them. Half the time they were vile, but it was all about the display of money needed to buy them, not the actual taste of the food.

"Vitrosomax is definitely on the shopping list. And we're going to be looking for fuel rods, so it is a safe bet we'll have a need for it fairly soon. Capn'n Kara is a stickler for looking after her crew. In all these years, I have never once seen her let someone melt from exposure, even when the temptation was very strong. That takes willpower. We've had some real nutcases on board. And when you compare that to our current crew, that should give you an idea of how crazy they really were."

Kessar was a bit taken aback. She was the detail person, the one he expected to want to plan things out. He was the big picture person, who kind of went with the flow. Maybe it was a test. "Well Cassendra does not make a lot of Ickonarian so lets do that one. I hope you like squid, it is the major protean."

He nodded again while taking the last bite of mystery sausage. "OK, well just so you know. One of my jobs is to make sure that kind of thing is in stock." He then finished the salad.
