[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
OOC:
As noted in the chat, there are three investigative/perception skill tests (this is an Intellect-based check) that need to be made while investigating. These are at an increasing level of difficulty: 4, 5, and 6. Please note that you each, individually, may have advantages or disadvantages that would impact your personal difficulty, should you choose to check things out. Please note all spend declarations should be made BEFORE you roll

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Taelan nods softly as Lofwyr speaks, none of this seeming to be a huge surprise to him but some of this did appear to be new information. He had a layman understanding of things to do with Numenera and the Datasphere, but having that confirmed for him by someone more experience was a bit of a relief. At the same time his only made him more curious on what all this could potentially mean.

He smiled a little as Jaeda gave the impression that she was very uncomfortable with the entire subject. Poor girl, she's been out in the world for a while and still couldn't shake the teachings of her youth. Not that he could exactly blame her. "Don't worry, if it hasn't hurt you yet I don't think it plans on hurting you now. While it doesn't sound like the most benevolent entity, it doesn't sound malicious either."

He feels their vehicle slow and raises a brow, tipping his hat back that he might see better as he leans closer to the window. He turns towards the driver to say something as his dark-haired companion call for the driver to stop. He chuckles slightly as he follows her out to look around himself. His eyes fall upon the scorch marks and he seems distracted for a moment before turning to the driver again. "Do you know what in the area could do this? Is this just bandits or something else?"

[OOC: So with my background advantages it brings my difficulties down so I need to hit 9, 12, and a 15. As stated in the chat, I used 3 pool points to lower the difficulty of the last roll to a 12. That doesn't do me any good though because I rolled a 1, a 4 and a 4. Whoo, another Intrustion for Taelan...]

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
As Taelan gives Daesa that look, she simply nods her head at him, smiling as if what she just did was completely natural.  Though she doesn't say anything about it out loud, instead she just gives him a bright smile.

Lofwyr's words ring true to her and she nods her head in agreement.  "That sounds a lot like what I was told in my training.  But don't worry if you breathe in the data sphere, it won't get stuck in your nose, or make you sneeze!  Or maybe they're what causes sneezes."  She says thoughtfully.

Either way, they've come to a block in the road and Daesa looks out of the carriage with mild curiosity, however when she sees that there are bodies on the ground her eyes go wide.  "Are those expired people?  Those look like expired people.  I'm going to.. just... be over here."  This is when she slinks down further in her chair, even going as far as sitting on the floor.

Dexil dismounted and meandered to the scene of the accident; he wasn't as enthusiastic as Jaeda but neither hesitant about the departed as Daesa was.

He came to a stop and scanned the scene others were moving around in an attempt to piece together that had happened and whether this wasn't truly and accident.

The bodies, the cargo, the transport itself. The connections severed; traders missing goods, families missing relatives; the connected nature of people of the 9th wasn't lost on Dexil - he found it fascinating even if he didn't necessarily show it.

"Found anything?" He wasn't speaking to anyone in particular, just throwing the question out for anyone to respond too.

[OOC - 14/13/13 - Thanks success on the first two checks.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
As Jaeda excitedly exits the vehicle, after asking for it to come to a stop, the driver sputters, obviously not liking this at all, "M'lady! I...I... I must..." however, he doesn't finish whatever he was going to say, as the movement also catches the notice of the mount driving the vehicle, causing it to cry out in distress. The vehicle stops.

Jaeda is the first out of the vehicle, and as such gets a better view of the scene as she gets closer. The bodies are a male, a female, and a child, the latter two clustered together, arms around each other. They can't have been dead too long -- scavengers haven't gone at the bodies yet.

It is clear that this is the result of violence, although the exact nature is not entirely certain. The scorched marks appear on the ground as well, and on the bodies. It seems unfocused, more likely a nano-based blast than anything else. The ground, bodies, and cart also show the sort of marks of conflict with bladed instruments as well... at least two assailants, if not more.

The first major bit of evidence is sadly not visible for long; the man, closer to the cart proper, lies face up on the ground, his hands near his stomach, which appears to have been torn open, hollowed out. Sadly, as Taelan begins to investigate the body proper, he manages to accidentally trip a cypher in the man's clothing, which bursts into sudden, hot flame, incinerating the body from the waist up, destroying the evidence.
OOC:
This is the result of the critical failure Intrusion, Taelan takes 1 pool point of Might damage.

The other two bodies, oddly enough, do seem slightly different from what can be recalled of the man's body... specifically, while he was a plain, weather-worn man, possibly of some money, a trader by the looks of him. The woman, even in her current state of damage and death, is not just beautiful in appearance, but uncommonly so. Skin, where not marred by the damage of this recent battle and the starts of decay, is quite literally flawless. The child is much the same... a young girl of perhaps no more than eight or nine years... with nearly flawless skin. Both are dressed well, also.

Dexil, while the others look at the bodies, notices another strange detail, specifically about the cargo: while the bags are torn open, boxes are broken, there's also detritus around them -- as if the actual contents were not taken.

Jaeda, while reviewing the two female bodies, does hear something underneath them, a soft, plaintive mewling sound.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Taelan leans close to look at the man that is laying separated from the other two bodies. "Odd... This one looks to have been cut open. It looks like bandits did this but something definitely ate off this one. All his insides are go-" His words are abruptly cut off as he reaches forward in an attempt to move the man's arm so he can get a better view. As he does Taelan barely registers an indistinguishable noise before the body suddenly ignites into a roaring flame.

Taelan lets out a shout of surprise as his face and hand get hit with a sudden blast of heat. A string of intense expletives pour from his mouth as he realize two fingers of the glove on his right hand have caught fire. The rapidness and muttered nature of the curses don't make for polite conversation, but suffice it so say something very rude is said about some unknown person's parents and something unpleasant is suggested on where someone should store a rusty pipe. He drops to his knees and tries to smother the flame in the dirt, relaxing a bit as he finds no long lasting damages has been done to them beyond a few scorch marks.

All seems calm until he realizes the brim of his hat has caught as well. The curses redouble as he quickly removes it and starts swatting it down in the dirt as well, all the while insinuating that whoever attacked this cart has an unhealthy relationship with farm animals. After a few moments of this the flames are finally put out and he inspects his hat, obviously displeased when he discovers that a new, albeit small hole has been added to the garment. Grumbling he stands again and looks to the remains of the man he was inspecting, obviously annoyed at the now half missing corpse. Letting out a heavy sigh he looks to Dexil and Jaeda. "Careful, I have reason to believe they might explode."

"Insightful, T..."

Dexil rarely displayed humour or even comprehension of such - but his reply, whilst delivered in his usual calm level voice, seemed layered with sarcasm.

Kicking through the debris on the floor that's come from the cargo he looks for anything that stands out; "I don't think anythings gone, perhaps someone was looking for something very specific and didn't find it. Maybe they know it's coming along this route but couldn't find it on this poor people."

Dexil looked around them, scanning the local environment for anything else out of place or that might be watching them ... or even other unfortunates who'd been attacked further along the trail.

Jaeda jumped as T wound up on fire, and started towards him as if to help. But...it was over almost as quickly as it started. "I'm so sorry, T. I hope you're okay," she said sincerely.

But the mewing did distract her. She gently removed the little creature, already breathing a soft, "Awwww." Hopefully the aww would be warranted, and it wouldn't turn into something that would try to eat her face, but she was already reaching and it was already too late. Brain for Cuteness Activated. While Daesa may not be keen on expired people, she does what to know what her traveling companions are up to.  Slowly she peeks over the edge of the caravan and raises her brow just a bit.  She's about to move to join them when something explodes, Taelan starts cursing and she ducks deeper into the caravan.

"Did they attack you?!"  She calls out.  "I thought they were expired, how did they attack?!"  She does finally peek her head up to see the damage.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Dexil, as he roots through the debris on the ground with his foot, finds another curiosity: the bags have been opened, their contents strewn about... but nothing has been taken. Nothing. One, a literal bag of shins, uniform in size, is left just a few feet from the burned body of what's left of the male figure, torn open and left to sit there by the side of the road. Others contain cloth, synth-weave, bits of food here and there... the sorts of things you expect to see with  trader on the move.

For Taelan, nothing more seems to want to burn him, although there's little but a pair of legs and singed trousers remaining of the man now, although hanging at his waist, now loosed slightly by the burning, is a small, personal bag of shins. Oddly enough, within there is also a square of cloth, folded, rolled, and tied off with a bit of twine.

Jaeda, however, takes center stage as she reacts to the odd, muffled mewling that comes from beneath the other two bodies. To find its source, she has to move the child, slightly, although even at dead weight it seems tiny. When she does, the first thing she sees is green. A tiny, green hand, no larger than two fingers pressed together, reaches out from under the small body. It would almost seem human, complete with opposable thumb, but for the color, size, and the two additional fingers. The hand is attached to an arm more like a leg, and that connected to a small body of fur.

An almost human cry, that of a babe in fear, emits from this small, green fluff of fur, but the hand doesn't recoil. Instead, the fingers weakly grasp at her hand, super-soft fingers wrapping around one of Jaeda's own. Two more hands, and then a fourth, reach from it, clinging to hand and arm. In all, it's tiny... weighing no more than five pounds. It's body, from which the four hand-feet protrude, is almost perfectly spherical, and covered entirely in soft, downy green fur. Massive eyes stare out, focusing with   intensity yet almost seeming human in their expression of fear and hope.

A large-ish, lipless mouth opens, the tiny nubbin teeth of an herbivore showing as it cries out again, and clutches to Jaeda's arm, shivering.

"Oh my gosh," Jaeda murmurs in a soft whisper. She instantly pulls the long sash from about her waist and wraps the tiny thing in it. She holds the little creature close as she pulls out a day's worth of rations. What? They were supposed to be resupplied whenever they needed to be anyway. She broke off some of the food and offered it to the little guy, making soft, soothing noises.

Normally she'd be all over the details of an apparent hit, but. "They are definitely expired," she murmurs to Daesa, in soothing, comforting tones that are actually meant for the little puffball, "but some of their items still seem to be very dangerous."

"Yeah they're dead. Dead as can be. This guys definitely not pulling through." Taelan gestured halfheartedly to the bottom half of the man he made explode, grumbling softly as he spotted a small bit of light filtering through the new hole in his hat. Fantastic.

He frowned softly as he took in the tiny creature Jaeda was feeding, not entirely sure what to think of the tiny creature. The little thing obviously could not have caused all the damage to this carriage, but what about Mommy and Daddy? Could they be somewhere nearby? He couldn't imagine any attack that was this destructive could have been avoided by the family pet. Then again, he looked to the scorch and slashed marks and then to the smashed boxes. People did this, people searching for something specific. But what exactly?

At this point he spots the small little bag of shins and swoops down to pick them up. He quickly looks into the bags and smiles. This was at least compensation for his injured pride and singed clothing. He moves tuck the bag into when of the pockets in his coat when he spots the tiny little cloth. Curious he pulls it out, a little wary that something else is about to explode but still wanting to know what's there.

Jaedas discovery struck him as odd, purely because it was a creature he'd never encountered the likes of before - though his early years had been somewhat cloistered in the Weal. WIth the way Jaeda took to the creature Dexil assumed it wasn't a source of alarm and went back to the remains of the cart.

Using his staff to moved pieces around he pondered that if there'd been an attack either it was to find something or for the sheer desire to inflict harm and damage.

"I can't see anything here that would warrant these people to be slain. It doesn't look like anythings been taken really either. Perhaps a beast attacked or something felt threatened by them?"

OOC:
For Jaeda

The little creature pauses, eyes widening even more impossibly as Jaeda pulls it close and wraps it with the sash. Impossibly, it slowly retracts its legs into its body, the whole becoming slightly larger with the attempt, but also much easier to hold. The cries stop, and once the sash is wrapped around the main portion of its body, the shivering does as well. Then, the mouth opens again, a lower-register, musical trilling escaping it. Every word she speaks for the next minute then is accompanied by this soft trill, the tone and cadence matching her speech, until it yawns.

The food, oddly enough, is ignored after a few chews, before the creature's eyes close halfway, and it shifts to snuggle even deeper up against Jaeda's chest, the trilling turning into a deep purr that can be felt more than heard.

OOC:
For Taelan

As Taelan checks and eventually unrolls the piece of cloth, spreading it out, a bit of wind catches it, causing the whole of it to catch and flutter. As it does so, musical notes peal out, a short, seemingly random tone that the creature in Jaeda's hands begins to match in that same low-register trill. Nothing more seems to happen with it, however.

For Dexil

"Huh," Jaeda murmurs, still in that tone. "I'm not sure what this poor little darling is, but he's definitely intelligent. He's...telling me what happened, sort of. As he understands it. There were 5 attackers. Maybe these were people of some importance. A hit. Savage and brutal, to kill a child."

There was anger in her words, but she continued rocking the little creature. She wasn't sure she could keep it particularly safe where they were going but she was loathe to leave it behind too. It had already been through enough, and it obviously needed some help.

She looked up at the person driving the coach. "Do you know who these people were? And...who does one report such heinous crimes to?"

Dexil crouched and began gathering what was left. His home had been a place where resources for biologicals had been scarce; whilst Dexil wasn't a hoarder he did take a practical view of things - these people were dead, no-one else had a claim on their possession as far as he could tell and leaving them would simply mean someone else would take them.

"There are some useful items here, if you want them, not sure what they are though. Cyphers most likely..."

Dexil looked up to the sky and stared blankly, allowing his eyes to roll back as he muttered quietly and made some odd vocalised noises that sounded machine-like...

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
For a bit, the creature closes its eyes, shifting slightly to get even further heat from Jaeda's comforting body, the contented purr getting even deeper. As a hand strays close to the face to stroke its fur, it reacts by gently opening its mouth, a thin, triangular tongue licking out, following by a massive yawn.

To the question asked him, the coach driver shrugs, "Foolish t'come out here without escort. Bandits all over, 'fraid of the Baron's sign on our coach, but eager to take out folks like this. The King's men patrol these roads daily... 'll be longer for us t'find 'em, then for 'em to show up here them own selves." He shakes his head, "We're only another day or so out. We can let the General know when we get ya to the new city -- they can get word out faster then us."

Going through the rubble, Dexil sets out several items, pocketing some, setting others to the side, but clearly visible for the others:
  • An orange-red pill in a small synth box.
  • A complex, spike-shaped device with a large circular dial made of sky blue ceramic.
  • A syringe filled with a silver-blue liquid.

When Dexil looks up to the sky for a moment, the odd language goes for a time... although, after a few seconds, it changes, the timbre of it not his own, the words barely audible: "Fathers? Are you the fathers?" Before his eyes clear, and he looks back around.

A musical handkerchief. He inspected the small cloth for a moment, perplexed on what the purpose of such a thing could be. As no more noise was immediately he jostled is slightly and blew on it, wondering what may happen if more air went across its surface. With this however he would pop this item and the small bag of shins into a coat pocket separate from his cyphers, deciding he would take advantage of the long carriage ride to inspect it further.

Taelan watched Jaeda as he rounded the cart to look at what Dexil was inspecting. A part of him seemed amused at how she was reacting to the over sized cotton ball with a mouth. After a moment though though he seemed confused. "It's... speaking to you? I didn't hear any words. Or do you speak squeaking and purring?"

He watched Dexil inspect the packages, all this information getting a little odd to say the least. If people had done this, why hadn't they taken anything? This would have been easier to explain if it had been an animal, but even if this was a targeted hit against these people he found it odd they they wouldn't have taken at least something. For crying out loud, there was a literal bag of money just sitting on the ground and none of the attackers thought to grab it for themselves. Perhaps... could they have been after something they had been transporting? Something specific, something even more valuable than the other seemingly already expensive things that had been cast aside.

Standing near Dexil he hears the soft muttering and blinks, looking over at him. "What?"

Dexil, more himself again, turned a mask he'd found in the caravan over in his hands inspecting it and thinking of the possibilities;

"They were attacked by hunters. Hunters and a companion automata. Or several. The answers are never clear. Though they appear to have left these items and some shins. Nothing appears to have been taken meaning they didn't find what they were after ... or were driven off maybe."

He placed the mask to his face where it began to match his own facial movements.

"Maybe they were from the Pyramid city?"

As Taelan waves the cloth around, blows on it, and the like, the little sheet of cloth plays the odd, inconsistent musical tones; so long as air is passing through it, it plays. To Taelan's question, Dexil appears to be completely unaware that it's aimed at him.

Taelan let out a small sigh and shook his head, his concern about what Dexil had been muttering apparently having gone unnoticed. He was going to more directly ask what that was about when he heard the driver of their carriage asking for them to get back in the vehicle. Frowning softly he made a mental note to keep an eye on the man standing next to him to watch for any other odd behavior and started for their ride. Giving Daesa a moment to let him pass he found a seat in the far back corner away from the door, letting all the rest settle in after him. He shook his head again and looked out towards the group, his concern immediately apparent. "We should be at least a little on guard for the rest of the trip. If someone attacked these people, they very well could be coming after us next."

Eventually, the group gets back into the cart, and travel back begins once again. The road is long, and you still have some time to get there, but that time is passed in far less comfortable conversation, thanks to the threat of the attack you've witnessed the results of.
