[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Morning comes quickly, and each of you are disturbed by a knock outside your doors shortly before dawn, advising you that a meal will be served shortly, and that your transport is set to leave at first light.

As promised the night before, the food and drink provided was excellent, much better fare than you would normally expect along the road, with no cost accrued by any of you. Drinks, alcoholic and otherwise, flowed freely to those who chose to partake.

Once done with a hearty breakfast, the five of you are led to the same vehicle from the day before... meaning your transit will be in decent comfort, especially without the two priests accompanying you. Your only new companion is the driver, who sits atop the back of the great beast pulling the carriage. Provisions for your four-day journey are provided, albeit more conservative fare better suited to road travel than the inn food. No tents or sleeping rolls are provided -- it is assumed you have that for yourselves.

Travel outside of the city takes far less time than coming in -- as the carriage approaches the wall, the driver signals to a guard at the entrance, who manipulates a part of the wall. The maze within shifts with loud, grinding sounds of stone on stone, and a nearly straight path leads out in less than twenty minutes. It swiftly closes behind you.

The journey is now underway.

OOC:
And so we start a short travel scene. For these, there will be little GM interference. Feel free to post at leisure (although let at least two people post between your own). Talk. Get to know each other. I'll intervene if I need to. Let me know when you're ready to wrap up. The journey itself is going to be pretty much uneventful, unless you all make it otherwise. :)

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Taelan sat apart from the group a bit at dinner but thankfully that was not the case at the following breakfast. It seemed that sleeping on a comfortable bed for the first time in a while with a belly full of good tasting food had done wonders to improve his mood. He even spoiled himself a bit and had used the Wave again, figuring that since they were going to be on the road for a while he should take advantage of the chance to be clean for the first leg of their journey. While not playing an active role in conversation, an occasional smile could be seen dancing across his features. That being the case, he still did not have much to say, giving a simple morning greeting and thanking the ones that had brought the food.

His expression seemed to brighten once more as he realized the authoritarian escorts they had the day before would not be joining them on their trip. If he was honest with himself, he wasn't really sure long he would have been able to remain civil around them. Finding a seat he took a long look at the mostly familiar faces of his traveling companions, wishing he had some better idea on what that meant. He studied Daesa for a moment, trying once again and failing to place her. With a sigh he leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest, lost in thought as they traveled to the city limits.

It was as they fully left the city and were officially on their way that the dark shadow that had been lingering over Taelan's temperament finally seemed to fade. A lot of the tension seemed to visibly relax away as they left the large city that didn't understand the concept of proper doors that could provide security and, through that, a sense of comfort.

He took in the view for a moment before looking to his newly formed traveling party, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and he gloved hands clasped together. "So, I'm going to just get this out of the way so we can move on to more pressing topics. Daesa, was it? Do I know you or do you know me? Because for some reason seemingly at random they called in several people I've met before except for you. I don't mean to sound like I suspect anything shady going on, it's just when you recognize three of the four faces around you, it makes me wonder."

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
While Daesa was happy to join in small talk, she did keep mostly to herself during the evening and into the night.  However, there is something horrifying that her travel companions quickly learn about the Nano.  Daesa is a morning person.  She was the first to rise, greeting everyone with an excited smile and a bright morning greeting.  She's also eager to depart, but doesn't pester anyone who wants to linger over their breakfast.

As eager as she is, she keeps it contained and spends a good part of the ride people watching.  Though she doesn't miss Taelan's looks, but simply gives him a bright smile and a wave as the cart is pulled on.

When he finally addresses her she'll purse her lips together, lightly tapping on them with her fingertip as she thinks.  "You know I have been wondering that myself.  I don't know you, at least I don't think I know you.  I feel like I should know you, but I don't know you.  Maybe you're familiar, or we just have faces that look like other faces so we think we know this face when in reality we know other faces?"  At least she isn't speed talking, but her speech is still in word-vomit mode.

"As for why I'm here, I just assumed it was because the really tall priest was my mentor's mentor.  So I figured my mentor's mentor went to my mentor asking him if he knew any students that could go on this mission.  I know I had told my mentor that I did want to travel and see the world, so perhaps he told his mentor that I would be a good candidate?  Or maybe I am his most expendable student?  Either way, I hope to not let down my mentor's mentor.  My Grandmentor?  Mentor Prime?  I should have caught his name."  Daesa says with a frown.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Dexils meal the night before had been devoured quickly and a few drinks had seen his more rigid approach to things loosen up; he even smiled and laughed a few times.

The morning after however he was back to his more systematic manner of being though he did seem more at ease around the others he'd shared a meal with.

The transport was curious and Dexil did take a few moments of reading about travel methods within the books he had. There wasn't much and what there was concerned the historical development and discoveries; interesting but nothing much of note from a cursory flick through.

"I figured that we were known of, by various means, to those choosing who to invite. That some of us know each other is part coincidence and part just fate. I know "T" but I don't know the rest of you yet. Knowing what I know, and having seen what I've seen, I suspect we'll get to know each other well and rely on each other in short order."

His words weren't as rapid-fire as they had been when he'd questioned the Baron and Cardinal. There was still an edge of formality to his speech but he was more relaxed and open in general.

"What I'm most curious about is how we're all going to help each other in this little exploit? "T" knows about me but for those interested I suspect I'm here for my familiarity and ease with automata ... or "crafted people" as I prefer to call them. I grew up in the Weal so I'm just used to them I guess."

Jaeda blearily watches Daesa in amazement. Are all Nanos so hyper? So far they're two for two on hyper Nanos on this trip. Mostly what she got out of that word vomit is that Daesa...has some mentors. All kinds of mentors. Enough mentors to have grand mentors and second mentors twice removed.

She is not a morning person. She had clutched whatever hot thing was available to drink for as long as humanly possible and had no words to offer to anyone. She hasn't even asked questions, though she's listened. Not at this hour.

"I'm a fighter. I've made a small--a very small, apparently--name for myself investigating various crimes and things. So I suppose I'll help you out with a quick hand and a sharp eye." She finally rolls her neck around and sits up a little straighter. "I get hired for this sort of stuff all the time, so...I don't think my presence here was directly connected to anyone here."

A subtle, quiet reassurance to T, perhaps?

"Well, I mean not exactly this sort of stuff," she amends, after a moment of thought. "This is my first pyramid, but. I can't imagine it's very different. Enter the area, figure out as much as you can about what's going on. Simple. Though probably not easy."

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
Taelan's eyes grew wide as Daesa exploded with information, taking a moment to process what she had said. So in some strange way, every person in this party seemed familiar with him to some degree. There was Jaeda, someone he had worked with before and had known for a while. Then there was Dexil, Someone he had met recently who was still a bit of a mystery to him. Next was Lofwyr, someone who had hit him in the back of the head with a rock once. And now there was Daesa, a woman that knew his face or a least knew someone who knew his face. But everyone else seemed to be strangers to each other.

With a heavy sigh he sat back in his seat again, crossing his arms in thought. By what the Baron and Cardinal had been saying, the Datasphere seemed to have picked the lot of them due to some unknown common criteria. And somehow this seemingly random choice and coincidentally placed him among several familiar faces. He wondered if there was some deeper meaning to that, but he was coming to realize that he would not get his answer to those questions while talking about it on the road. By the sound of it, this was a mystery that could potentially be solved by gaining access to the Pyramid. All the more reason to go. He nodded softly, deciding that it was likely best to drop it for the time being. At the very least, he was surrounded by people he knew (or who's faces he knew?) so he could likely be comfortable and less on guard around this group.

Hearing the direction the conversation was going, he realized he should make his own little introduction as well. "To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why I received an invitation. Like I told the Baron, I've made a habit of trying to leave as little a footprint as I can. Though by the sound of it I'm not that good at hiding myself from something like the Datasphere... Still, maybe it has something to do with that? There are advantages to going unnoticed." He smiled softly as he thought of something. "And seeing as you all know me, feel free to call me Taelan if you'd prefer. Though I do ask you just call me T around others. Long story..."

"T it is then!"  Daesa says with a bit of excitement. "I have lots of skills, but really no name to speak of.  My family are merchants in Navarene and my elder brother has made a name for himself there.  However I do have some skill with minds, and I trained with priests so like I mentioned that's probably why I am here." Again thus comes across in her typical word vomit fashion though it's a touch slower than her last wall of text.  "This is also my first pyramid."  However she stops taking for a second as of considering her words and let's them hang in the air awkwardly.

"So what is this Datasphere anyway?" Jaeda asks, shaking her head. "In all my travels I've never heard of it. I'm a little creeped out by the idea that there's something just...watching me, wherever I go, recording whatever I do, and telling these priests all about me. I mean sure, this time it was profitable, but..."

Taelan nods softly as Daesa introduces herself before his eyes grow wide, blinking softly before his gaze falls upon the fiery redhead. He raises as eyebrow as if questioning the woman whether what he just experienced actually happened. He watches her for a moment, unsure how to respond. Eventually he shrugs and looks to Jaeda while she's asking her question. "I sort of have an idea what the Datasphere is all about but hearing from someone a bit more familiar would be nice. Any semblance of an idea as to why it would have chosen us for this job. For that matter what this whole Mother and Father business is all about."

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
[OOC: Posted by the GM on behalf of the character to move things along. I am keeping it technically free of storytelling elements so he can substitute his own, should he choose.]

Although he had been mostly reserved during the initial part of the journey, Lofwyr certainly perks up as conversation turns to a subject quite close to his heart. He shares a quick, knowing glance at Daesa before he begins to explain. of course with his somewhat elliptical, non-lineear manner.

His primary points:
- The Datasphere is not a thing, so much an entity, or collective of entities, natural and machine, that connect everything in the world around you. We are each very much a small part of it, the network suffusing everything we eat, breathe, drink... everything.
- Although the Datasphere is itself alive, there are beings that live within it, within all of us. It is these beings that the Aeon Priests, and those who manage to contact the Datasphere itself interact with those manifest intelligences.
- The wisdom is that the Datasphere knows everything. Past. Present. Even the statistical likelihoods of the future. Theirs is the combined knowledge of every prior world, if one can only figure out how to ask.
- They clearly know us because, they know everyone. The Mother/Father connection, however, is uncertain. Such mysteries are common -- the intelligences have their own reasons, thoughts, interpretations, and motives.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
"Well, congratulations. That's some of the creepiest stuff I've ever heard," Jaeda says, wincing. "I've been eating some sort of sentient...Datathing. Oh and breathing it. All my life. I suppose there's nothing to be done about it, but...I can see why everyone I grew up with thought they were dealing with demons."

She cleared her throat. "Not me. Of course."

But the way that she rubbed the back of her neck said she hadn't entirely gotten over her initial training. Logic said the Datasphere was not the Demons of the Air, out to destroy, to harm, to cause misery and control. Emotion and years of indoctrination made her uneasy thinking about it.

OOC:
Because things are kind of dragging here, GM has decided to offer an Intrusion. Through random roll, the offer goes to Daesa. You are offered one XP for yourself, as well as one XP to provide to another player of your choice. You may choose to use your XP to deny the intrusion, or keep it to accept the Intrusion, which I will outline shortly.

Daesa has accepted the intrusion. The additional XP goes to Dexil. Intrusion incoming, Please feel free to continue posting. Recall we're still on the 'two pose rule'.

[IC] Episode 002: The Road to the Pyramid
While all of you are talking, you feel a slight change in the movement of the vehicle, a slowing. The driver calls out, "Sorry, lords and ladies.... Bit of an obstacle in the road. Will just take a moment to get around it!" And, indeed, although the vehicle doesn't actually stop, it slows further, and you can feel it shift to the side, off the easier road, the ride becoming readily less smooth.

Curiosity strikes, of course, as the massive beast pulling you works to move around to the right of whatever is blocking the road. Looking outside, you see the land becoming more green and verdant as your path leads you closer to the river boundary of the country, the scrubland already becoming more and more forest-like in appearance, although there is still plenty of room to get around the block.

As you continue, the source of the blockage becomes clear: another vehicle, this more a cart than transit, off on the left side of the road. It's leftmost wheels are violently shattered, the cart itself and its contents strewn to the side where it overturned, bags ripped and torn where scavengers of one sort or another have already gone through, wooden boxes cracked and shattered, as well as what once might have been decent earthenware. As you nearly pass the rest of it, you can see what looks like scorch marks ripping across the side visible to you.

Closer to the front of the cart, three bodies have been left behind. It's hard to tell much from inside the vehicle, but they are displayed in disarray, left to lie where they are, and it looks like the scavengers have had their way with them as well. Next to one of the bodies, the largest, is a large crate, turned on its side, straw spilling out of it.

Jaeda frowns. "Hey, can you stop the coach? I want to have a look."

Once they comply, she hops out. "Sorry guys, I just want a quick look." As if she hadn't just said that, but.

She starts investigating the area, looking for evidence of who might have done this. It's just natural for her to think like a detective in this manner...though she's not entirely sure what might be left behind to glean from the wreckage.

Using the Investigator ability to spend from my Speed pool, which has Edge, and spending 4 pool points to drop the difficulty on the final roll. So my DCs, if I've done this right, are 9, 12, and 12.
