Re: Chpt 2.2b - Snake Skull Alley
“Who took it?” Mother asks, glaring down at the girls, her hands on her hips. “Who stole the pie?”
Millie, Trish, and Robin look to one another, frightened.
“Don’t look at each other, look up here, at me! Who stole the pie!” Mother is getting angrier. Reaching out, she grabs Robin’s chin and turns her head towards her. Robin finds herself staring into mother’s eyes. Something is different about them. “Come on! Admit it! One of you did!”
“We.. we didn’t!” Trish murmurs, finally. “We were outside!”
Mother lets go of Robin and turns to Trish, growling. “Lies! Lies!”
“Trish isn’t lying! We really were outside!” Millie cries, close to tears now.
Mother roars in frustration and stomps away from the girls, then stomps back again. She pauses in front of them, seeming to make her mind up about something.
“Fine. If none of you will confess…” She begins to smile.
Millie, Trish, and Robin look at one another again, more terrified than ever.
“Dance,” she says, still smiling.
What? Robin gasps.
“Dance!” she says again, louder. “If you won’t confess, dance!”
None of of the girls move. Mother turns and walks over to the wall, where a wooden cane hangs from a hook. She takes it and turns back towards the girls, swinging it about in the air, so fast it makes whirring noises.
Trish begins to tap her feet, tip toeing first on her right foot, then her left, then her right again. Mother’s smile turns into a grin.
“That’s right… that’s right…” she says, nodding in approval. “The two of you, don’t just stand there, dance!”
Millie and Robin begin to dance too. Millie turns around slowly, executing a twirl in slow motion. She starts to cry. Robin pirouettes, hopping into the air.
“Yes! Yes! Dance for me!” Mother begins to laugh. Stepping back, she begins to tap her feet as well, as if to some silent music nobody can hear.
“Faster! Dance faster!” The girls start to move more quickly. “And you! Stop crying! Crying means you’re guilty! Crying means you stole the pie!”
“I didn’t steal the pie! I didn’t steal the pie!” Millie is swirling around, faster and faster. She has difficulty keeping her balance, and nearly slams into Trish.
“Faster!” Mother is laughing hysterically. The girls are all in a frenzy now. Trish pulls out a chair and hops onto it and then onto the table. Millie runs around the room, not so much dancing as scrambling about haphazardly. Robin spins around on the spot, as quickly as she can, then leaps into the air. Mother’s laughter turns louder and crazier. What is happening to her? Robin finds herself entranced. Something takes hold of her body. She finds she cannot stop. She dances and dances and dances, faster and wilder than she ever has before.
“Stop!” Mother shouts, suddenly. Trish and Robin freeze immediately. Millie continues moving for a while, before catching herself against a wall, and leaning against it to catch her breath.
“Good… good…” mother says. She has stopped laughing. She is smiling now. Sweat drips down her forehead. Has she been dancing too? No, only laughing.
Millie, Trish, and Robin cast glances at each other again. What is going to happen now?
Mother steps forward and begins to examine the girls, her eyes darting this way and that.
“Robin! You danced the best! You didn’t steal the pie!”
What? Millie and Trish glare at their sister, not quite believing what they are hearing. Then they turn to look at mother, who is facing them now, wearing a menacing grin. Millie and Trish begin to shudder, grabbing ahold of one another in terror.
“Please, mother! None of us took the pie!” Trish cries. Mother isn’t listening anymore. She steps towards them, licking her lips as she does.
“That wasn’t much of a dance, now, was it, Millie,” mother says. Almost at once, she reaches out, and grabs her by the arm. Instinct takes over. Robin lunges at mother, trying to tear her away from Millie, but mother is much too big, and pushes Robin away. She begins to drag Millie, who has begun writhing, struggling to get free. Still mother screeches and cackles.
The cellar! Robin rushes over to the trap door. She must stop mother from taking Millie. It’s useless, though, and she knows it. Without letting go of Millie, mother twists her waist about and gives Robin a solid kick, sending her sprawling across the room. With the same foot, she catches the handle of the door and lifts it open.
“Down you go!” she cries, still cackling, and tosses Millie in. Millie screams before she hits the cellar floors. There is a sickening snap. Robin whimpers, nearly vomiting. Mother seems not to notice. Stepping into the cellar, she turns and gives Robin a wink, then vanishes, pulling the door shut behind her.
