While Argent takes Nivran to meet Lt. Atek and Tony heads off to attend to his own affairs, Shione accompanies Nyle and Melissandra to the lounge for a light lunch. Nyle declines any food after the light brunch on the Runabout, but Melissandra says, "I noticed that one of your Bajoran crewmates has a replicator recipe for a very nice hasperat. Computer, two hasperat, please." The replicator's receiver plate glows and two hasperat appear. They are a wrap formed of a flatbread around a filling of highly spiced cream-style cheese and chopped peppers. She also orders three raktajino and passes one to Nyle as the three walk to their table.

"I notice that you and Nyle are at least on speaking terms. That's good. It will make this so much easier." She looks at Nyle. "See, it's just as I told you. Shione is a lovely woman and a competent officer." She suddenly looks slightly startled as she peers at Shione. "Is that a second full pip I see on your collar? You've been promoted? I thought you were resistant to promotions!" She looks bemused but pleased.

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 1):

Shione observed the minimal contact between them subtly.
" Not any more Mom. I'm embracing a leadership role. And I'm being credited with facilitating a breakthrough here, so if I can get Cassy back to talking to me, my life and career will be great.

I think the two of you should meet her without me, but do NOT push her right now. Please remain low key, otherwise" and she turned to Nyle "You could lose your influence if she feels that I have "gotten to you".

Does that make sense?"

She reaches out and latches on to her mother's hand Are we gonna have some time together, you and I?"
Melissandra can see some deeply suppressed emotions in her daughter's eyes

Melissandra looks pleased. "I'm so pleased for you, dear, and I think it's admirable for you to try to help your half-sister through these difficulties. Don't you agree, Nyles?"

Nyles looks across at his wife. "Er, um... I suppose I should expect no less of a daughter of yours." He turns to Shione. "I'm gaining more respect for you with each passing development. Shall we start over from the beginning?" He holds out a hand. "Hello Shione. I'm your... er, uh, step-father, I guess is the term. I'm... pleased... to meet you," he says hesitatingly as he blushes deeply. <I wish I could have met your adoptive parents. Handicaps and social stigma aside, they did an excellent job raising a remarkable young lady.>

Shione's mother beams at both of them. It's apparent that they've been carrying on a private telepathic conversation parallel to the verbal one. Shione is intellectually aware that some Betazoid couples do this habitually, but having been raised by non-telepaths and living among other races for the other half of her life, it's the first time she's seen it.

Nyle looks vaguely uncomfortable with the emotions of the moment and quickly changes the subject. "Well, now to work, as it were. How do we prevent cassiadora from self-destructing her career? She's always been a headstrong overachiever—fiercely proud and independent."

Melissandra chimes in, "I suspect, and Dr. Adonidas agrees, that she feels threatened by suddenly having an older sister and losing her position as an only child, or more precisely of being relegated to the second-favourite child. She's always needed to be the first and best in any endeavour—both her greatest strength and her greatest flaw. I'm afraid I must bear the greatest part of the blame for that."

Nyle looks at her, then says to Shione, "I'm afraid that honour may fall to me. I, too, felt threatened by things past and out of my control. But the time for self-recriminations is past, or at least may be postponed until we get this dealt with." His tone of voice betrays his profession as a hard-scrabble senior administrator.

Clearing away dishes and utensils, The three proceed to Cassy's quarters to confront her.

Nyle and Melissandra exchange a look. Melissandra replies, "Perhaps you're right, dear. We'll contact you by thought when we're—she's—ready." She and Nyle leave together, leaving Shione to her thoughts.

Atek replies, <Yes, Shione, I can see you in five minutes in my Ready Room.>

When Shione arrives at Atek's Ready Room, he is just sitting down. He reaches over and taps the activation pad on his LCARS terminal. As it blinks to life, he says aloud, "So, Lieutenant, what can I do for you?"

In reply to Lieutenant Teranin Atek (msg # 9):

"I just want  go over the upcoming visitation by the Enterprise with you.
Mom and Nyle Dul are meeting with Cassy now and I'm pleased to tell you that I seem to have won over her Father.
He was buying the Romulan story and now he realizes he was in error and will cooperate fully.

Just so you understand. He is the problem. Nyle DUl is a typical High Caste Betazoid who feels that all the rest of us are beneath notice. I'm the half Betazoid, bastard daughter, raised by Gammazoids, whose career is simply that of a "hopped up rating" who doesn't know her place.

At least that was what he felt last night.

I gave him the unclassified details of the investigation into my background and along with me apologizing for my temper, he will now help us.

Atek frowns. "The old caste system is completely obsolete, a relic of the past. It's no more relevant that Earth's Samurai or Untouchables. Even the nobility of the Betazed Noble Houses is purely ceremonial these days. The only real remnant is the unfortunate prejudice against the telepathically handicapped, and even that is on the wane. If I may remind you, your Counsellor Deanna Troi of the Fifth House is only empathic with non-Betazoids. She's held in very high regard among all levels of society. In fact, Nyle Dul is not a member of the Noble Houses but has risen to Senior Administrator on his own merits. Prejudice cuts both ways, Lieutenant, and don't mistake insults given in the heat of anger for core principles. That would be falling into the same trap in which Lt. Cassy Dul finds herself. The Humans on Earth have a holy book which says 'first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.' Good advice, in my opinion. At any rate, from what you say he seems to be trying to get past all that. Maybe you all need a quick session with Counsellor Troi before she treats Cassiadora, just to clear the air."

He stands up and begins to pace. "At any rate, the Enterprise doesn't arrive for another 68 hours, give or take. Perhaps you'd better take some personal time until then. I'll log that you're off duty for the next 72 hours. Spend it wisely and please refrain from provoking Lt. Dul. Maybe you could try getting to know Administrator Dul better."

She was set back by the Lieutenant's word, and stood at attention before speaking

 "I meant no disrespect for the Noble houses of Betazed, Lieutenant. But you have not lived my life, sir. And with respect, I have my emotions under control.

I was raised by Gammazoids, and love them dearly,but my prejudice is only for those who cling to those outdated beliefs, which you and I know still exist today in the hearts and minds of some."

Atek can see that she is both calm and in control as she speaks, and she is permitting him to hear her public thoughts to reinforce that.

"Sir. I do not need time off. Our mission was not that strenuous and we've just spent some days aboard the Kitch, waiting to get back here and back out there on duty.

Nyle Dul and I are getting along fine now, and I will still have time to spend with my mother.
But Sir, I am a Starfleet officer with 22 years service and this setback is not going to make me unfit for duty. Sir!" she added as an afterthought.

Atek sighs. "Very well Lieutenant. If you insist, you may remain on duty. In fact, I have some materials I'd like you to familiarise yourself with. As you may be aware, there is a population of Klingons in the Sphere, survivors of a battle with the Romulans over a century ago, and who crash-landed in the Sphere in the command boom of their Klolode class D7 Battlecruiser. This ship was the IKS BortaS, the legendary Battlecruiser Vengeance of the Klingon holodramas. They've built up a large mediæval walled city around the surviving command boom, named vengbortaS, or BortaS City after the IKS BortaS. Since these Klingons are a throwback to the so-called fusion Kingons, the modified genotype engineered by Doctor Phlox of the NX-01 to cure the fatal mutations caused by the Klingons' attempt to adapt the Augment treatments to the Klingon genetic code. Unfortunately, the cure to the mutations created by the Klingons in the late 2260's is ineffective, and the Klingon High Council is debating how or, indeed, if they even should recreate a cure to  the Augment virus." Atek hands Shione a PADD.. "Study this material while waiting for Captain Picard to arrive with Dr. Sormok."

Shione is excited by the challenge "Does this mean that my team and I will be part of this operation Lt?

I do hope so. I am trained in Klingon weapons after all and while my Klingon is a bit rusty, but a night or two of sleep learning should do for that"

Atek seems pleased with Shione's enthusiasm. "We'll have to see what develops, Lieutenant, but yes it looks that way for now. So far, until the Klingons make up their minds, we're only observing. And your universal translator will take care of the language." He smiles at that last.

He stands up and shows Shione to the door. "Dismissed," he says.

Alone a few moments later, Shione discovers a concise history of the BortaS and its presence in the Sphere. It appears that the ship had been on a raid deep in Romulan territory and had been pursued by a Romulan fleet as it headed for the Empire after having captured a relic of the Romulan exodus from Vulcan. M'Rel and the original runabout Thames had infiltrated the command boom of the BortaS shortly after its discovery and had discovered and retrieved the Vulcan artefact which turned out to be a pre-Surak psionic weapon on immense power. This artefact had since been turned over to the Vulcan Science Council for study, a project headed up, according to a comment in the briefing notes, by a certain Dr. Sormok. The files include a map of the city and a briefing on the societal structure.

Shione unpacks all her weapons except for the second kar'takin that she has in a purpose built leather sheath. She is gifting that to Worf.

She then changes into her workout gear, grabs her favourite Bat'leth and heads to the Holodeck. Cranks up the gravity to 1.3 and runs a KLingon weapon training program at her highest setting

Shione proceeds to the holodeck to run the programme Worf-03-992. a jungle-like landscape shimmers into existence and a skull-faced Humaoid in body armour attacks. Shione brings her bat'leth up to defend herself and soon loses track of time. at the end of her reservation, a chime rings and the opponents freeze in place. Shione is drenched in sweat and out of breath. It has been a good workout.

Argent's silver eyes stared morosely into his glass of Aldebaran whiskey. It was often hard to tell a Caitian's mood based on expressions. They certainly didn't look like the proverbial Cheshire cat when they were happy, but they were equally nondescript when they weren't.

"I don't like it," he muttered to the others... or to himself... or to no one at all really. It was hard to tell.

"I do not like it at all. I mean, it was strange enough that the Sphere had been built by some super techno-savvy species that had lived ten thousand years ago... But to find out that it was done by some species from another... universe! Why did they build it in our backyard? Why couldn't they have built it in their own? What was wrong with theirs?"

"Look... if it had been built to accommodate a world's over-population, that would make sense, right? Well, even if having the technology to build it meant they could have gone to a thousand other worlds, why build it? Surely they knew the star would become unstable at some point."

"Do we know for sure that what this Olivaw person told us is true? Even if Olivaw believes it, that doesn't make it so, does it?"

If the sphere now belonged to someone else, what was the point in returning? They'd just be trespassing. It had been a mystery to explore and investigate. Now it was just a big nuisance!

Shione smiled at the Caitian's rant and waited until he had finished before interjecting.

" He gave us the access codes, not only to the bases , but also the main entrances; so I think that means he does at least have some connection to those who built it.

And let's face it Argent, we have all heard of multiple stories about alternate universes.

Given that fact then, the ability to travel between universes means to me that they were interested in building it far from their home.

Think of it we have been given the keys to the sphere. This is now Federation territory and it's full of not only new cultures, but new races!.

I'm excited by the possibilities.

Lt Atek gave me some info on what may be our next mission. Let me check with him to see if I can share it with you"

She taps her comm badge. "Lt Kurasa to Lt Atek. Sir, can I share the data you gave me with my crew?"

She waits for Ateks response as well as word from her Mother

Atek replies over Shione's commbadge, "Affirmative, Lieutenant. You may share the BortaS materials with your crew."

Sosal is walking past the table and overhears the conversation. "It's an old wrecked Klingon ship which crashed in the Sphere back in... oh, 2250. The survivors built a walled fortress and city around it. Caused a bit if a scandal in the Empire, I'll tell you. Seems they're some sort of Klingon-Human hybrids. Got a mediæval society built up there."

Tony agrees, "Yeah, I heard some of that over the grapevine. Sounds crazy, if iyo ask me. Story goes they stole some sort of Vulcan gizmo from the Rommies 'way back in the bad old days. M'Rel knows all about it—he was there."

Sosal takes out a PADD and does a search on the Vulcan artefact stolen from the Romulans. "The Vulcan psionic weapon dates back to the Romulan schism, it says here. It was called the tor Fal and was used by the orthodox Vulcans against the Romulan faction. The Romulans captured it but were unable to use it against the Vulcan orthodoxy, so when they fled Vulcan they took it with them. It was kept in a museum on Romii until 2250 when the IKS BortaS—sound familiar?—captured it and fled, chased by the 5^th Squadron. They reported the BortaS destroyed, a claim the Klingons have always disputed with the BortaS becoming a legend that lent its name to the holothriller series may'Duj bortaS, or Battlecruiser Vengeance. Of course we now know what happened to the BortaS. After M'Rel, Seth and Tal took the tor Fal from the BortaS' command boom and discovered that it was a powerful psionic resonator, Ensign T'Zill, a Vulcan science officer, stole it and tried to flee in a Romulan Theta class Runabout. M'Rel and the USS Lena retrieved it and destroyed the Romulan Runabout, killing T'Zill, who was later determined to be a Romulan deep-cover agent. Starfleet returned the tor Fal to the Vulcans. It doesn't say who took custody of the tor Fal, though."

Sosal taps the PADD a couple of times. "It appears that they merely found the artefact while raiding the Romulans because... well, that's what Klingons do. They just knew that it was an important Romulan relic. They didn't know—or even care—that it was either Vulcan, or a psionic weapon. Just lucky, I guess... It wasn't until a Vulcan crew member recognised the ancient Vulcan writing on it and translated it that anyone found out. LCdr. M'Rel found it in a heap of spoils in the command boom. It didn't look Klingon, so he took it for study."

She does not dawdle and makes her way there in about 3-5 minutes.
She taps the entry button and waits to be welcomed

Shione arrives at Cassy's quarters and presses the door chime. "Come," replies Cassy's voice. Shione steps in Cassy is there, her eyes red and puffy.

Cassy's voice is hoarse. "Well, it looks like you've won. You've managed to turn my parents against me. Not only that, you've managed to steal my First Contact credit from me and engineered a promotion, to boot. Congratulations," she says, her vopice dripping with irony. Her parents are nowhere to be seen.

Cassy says viciously, "On my side? Don't make me laugh, you bitch. I'll take you down if it's the last thing I do!" She shoves Shione, who manages to catch her balance and not fall, but by then she's outside the door. "Computer close and lock door!" yells Cassy and the door slides shut, leaving Shione out in the hall.

Shione finds Melissandra and Nyle in their guest quarters. when she tells her mother about the encounter with Cassy, Melissandra looks shocked. "I truly thought that Cassy was going to call a truce with you..." she stammers.

Nyle is stony-faced. "This is not like Cassy. To be certain, she's always been a bit spoiled, and for that I must take the blame, but there's something more involved. For what it's worth, you have my apologies, Shione."

So Shione heads off and the  hears Nyle's reaction.

She sits down next to her mom and lays her head on Melissandra's shoulder. "What did I do wrong, Mom? This seems like it's all my fault"

And for the first time in 30 years Shione cries

Melissandra embraces Shione and begins stroking Shione's hair while making sympathetic crooning noises in the way mothers do. Nyle moves forward and places his hands on Melissandra's shoulders. He says quietly, "Where do we go from here?"

Seconds later, Shione's commbadge chirps. "Medical emergency! PO Kingsleigh report to Lt. Dul's quarters. Lt. Kurasa and Mr. and Mrs. Dul please report to sickbay."

It is a medical problem now,which might just solve her issues with Starfleet as they should discount all she has been saying as simply an ill officer.

Mr Dul. Starfleet looks after it's own, very well. She will have the best of care"

Mr. Dul takes Shione's hand in his and says, "Call me Nyle."

Melissandra looks scared and says, "We'd best get down there right away!" and heads for the door.

Shione grabs her Mother's hand as she stands.

"No Mom. Not right now.Let Dr Adonidas have some time with her. Trust me. Seeing any of us right now will only make her think we are the reason she is in sickbay.

She wraps her arms around her mother, partly to hold her here.

When the Duls and Shione arrive at the sickbay, PO Kingsleigh is assisting Hawkeye with Cassy, who is in convulsions and frothing at the mouth. Atek is there and speaking to his commbadge, "Athena, go to warp and beam down as soon as you get into range. It looks serious. Atek out" He looks up and sees Shione and the Duls come in.

He comes over and says, "They don't know what's happening yet. Cassy was ordering something from the replicator when she collapsed. The computer reported the loss of contact and Ops called Cassy to confirm she was OK. When they got no reply, they checked up on internal sensors and discovered her in convulsions. Alyce had her beamed straight here."

Shione does not hesitate.She moves past Atek,like he is not there and arrives at the bed where her sister lays.

"Do what you have to,but do not try to stop me.I am going to find out what she ingested"

Shione bends over her sister's head until their foreheads touch. Shione's hand go to either side of her face and she draws every ounce of her telepathic talent and focuses on Cassy's mind, probing her mind deeper than she has ever gone with anyone before.

Shione finds herself in an environment of semiorganic caverns with a dark reddish gelatinous liquid oozing from the walls and ceiling; collecting in an ankle-deep stream below. A dim light seems to emanate from nowhere and a rank stench permeates the thick, stuffy air. The footing beneath Shione is unsteady, as if she were standing on a living being. A wail of terror undulates through her head.

Atek, Melissandra and Nyle fade into existence beside Shione. Shione's blade passes through the bug without doing any damage, as if the sword was only imaginary. The bug's claws sweep toward Shione and her armour proves just as ineffective. A sharp pain blossoms in her abdomen and she looks down to see blood on her belly. With an effort, Shione is able to cause the cuts to heal, but she's not sure how long she can hold up. The pain ebbs away to a mere dull ache. Behind the bug, Shione sees an ornately carved baroque wooden doorway set into the organic walls. The door has chains stretched across it. Shione can hear a child whimpering behind the door.

Shione calls on her martial training feinting one way as if to attack again and then tumbles forward running full out for the door. <Cassy Come Home!>  She shouts as she strikes the door and chains full force

Shione succeeds in her feint but the bug flails at her and connects as she ducks beneath its legs. Shione is momentarily stunned and spits blood into the gelid liquid on the 'floor'. Above her, she can see Atek, her mother and step-father attempting to grapple with it.

Shione slams her heel into the bug's lower leg and hears a crack. The bug shrieks and tumbles forward, dragging the other three down with it. Greenish-yellow ichor splatters Shiones trouser leg. The bug claws at the threes, splattering blood all about. Shione is able to stagger to her feet.

She Moves to it's head and aims a blow both physical and Psionic at the back of it's head.

All the rage at it and the love for her family concentrated in one last blow to save them

The bug's head explodes in a welter of ichor and it stops moving as Atek Melisandra and Nyle painfully crawl to their feet. They grimace as the cuts seal themselves and the blood stops flowing. As they face the door behind the bug's original position, Atek says, <The body is dematerialising.>

As Meisandra touches the door, Cassy's wail comes from behind. This time, it more closely resembles a bllod-curdling shriek of pain.

Shione is lying on her back under a blinding white light. Someone leans over her, partly blocking the light. A voice, vaguely familiar says, <Shione, are you awake? Can you hear me?> The voice echoes through Shione's skull, as loud as a peal of thunder. She can feel warm hands grasping hers.

The same voice, this time a whisper, says "Try not to move. You've been trough a lot." Shione's whole body aches as though she's been through a harder workout than she can ever remember doing.

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 64):

She manages one word "Cassy?"

The voice in Shione's head says, <No, Shione. It's Deanna. Do you remember me?> The figure in Shion's field of vision snaps into sharp focus. It is, indeed, Counsellor Troi, in her old lavender jumpsuit, black curls cascading down her shoulders.


Troi's brow is creased in concern. <How do you feel?> she asks.

"Yes of course Deanna. I guess I've been out for a while. How is my sister and family?

Are they alright?  And can you help me sit up, please? That light is hard on the eyes"

As she sits, she adds "I feel like I've gone 10 rounds with Data"

Deanna looks concerned. <Your eyes are closed, Shione. try to open them> Shione opens her eyes and see that she's in the sickbay. The lights are dim and Counsellor Troi is leaning over her. Troi is in uniform. Dr. Adonidas stands behind Troi, holding a medical tricorder. Beside her is Dr. Crusher.


Looking around, Shione sees Cassy in a biobed, unconscious and hooked up to life support. Atekm and the Duls are sitting up in biobeds. They are all in hospital gowns. Shione looks down and sees she's also wearing a hospital gown.

Athena steps up and says, "Lieutenant, you've been in a coma for four days. Cassy still is. You mumbled something about 'eggs' before the crisis. We've scanned all five of you for any alien eggs or other biologicals and we've ruled that out. What did you see when you were in contact with Lt. Dul?" She points the medical tricorder's peripheral scanner at Shione's head while speaking.

"The Psionic insect we found in Gamma base. Olivaw said it uses illusions to mask itself in order to get close enough to lay eggs.It was in stasis,but somehow it reached out.

The creature had a Psi presence in Cassy's brain. It had her trapped. I killed it.
Drove my fist through it's head and the the four of us went to break down the door we could hear Cassy crying behind. Then I passed out"

She rubs her head and asks for a drink of water as well as something for the aches she is feeling.

"Someone needs to speak with OLivaw or Researcher Daneel about investigating the bug.
Although Data could also likely deal with it. If I am right, the damage I did to it psionicly should have killed it, but we need to be sure."

She sips the water, and the smiles."I hope that mangy old Klingon didn't see me like this.
The way I feel now he just might be able to beat me." and she laughs

"That's humor Deanna, just so you understand ,that I don't actually think he suffers from Mange
I just thought you all might think I was nuts or something" She waves at the others

Word had spread throughout the base about Cassy's and Shione's 'illness', even if no one could say exactly what the problem was. Whatever it was, they'd been in a coma for four days! Argent had spent most of that time pacing up and down outside sickbay. He was concerned about his new commander.

He knew he wasn't a kitten, but he desperately wanted his empathy to help Shione. Sometimes dogs and cats could reach through the darkness and bring a little light to the patient. He hoped he could help now.

Of course, the doctors wouldn't tell him anything. They wouldn't even say if her prognosis was good... which meant they were in the dark, too! And so he continued to pace and send pleasant thoughts in her direction. Not that he was a telepath, but she was. Maybe she'd pick up on them. Yeah, along with everyone else's!

" Ah Deanna. Is that a Caitian pacing in the hall? Could someone please let him know he can come in. He is one of my crew and I want him to know I am alright"

Ladies this is Argent Merawdr. He is a Starfleet Scientist studying the Sphere."

Like most Caitians when they got tongue-tied, his tongue stuck out the side of  his mouth. He was completely flabbergasted to suddenly find himself in the presence of such august personages!

He was sure they'd be embarrassed to here all the tales told about them around the Federation... and not for the first time, he wondered just how many of them were true! He couldn't rightly say what image he had of them, but it certainly wasn't... this! They looked... well... normal.

"Hello, hello," he finally managed to find his tongue. "It is an honor to meet you. Alas, the Enterprise made all the truly significant discovers about the Sphere. I'm just picking up the crumbs now."

In reply to Argent Merawdr (msg # 72):

She grinned at Argent's reaction. "I suppose you two get this sort of reaction from everyone who has heard all the legends about the Enterprise.
Welll the stories I could tell" and she winked at Beverly.

"But of course my tongue is tied regarding these ladies, but Worf, well he's a different matter.

Whoa Doc what's the injection for?" as she saw Dr. Adonidas come forward.

"Save me Argent. They want to experiment on me!"

As a science officer, he was mostly familiar with the use of needles, although they were mostly used in the anthropological and botanical sciences. He sincerely doubted that the doctor was going to experiment on her, but just the same, Argent stepped between Shione and the doctor, visually examining the needle. If it had something in it, he'd want to know what it is. The doctor may have told her anyway. On the one time he'd been in sickbay, that had been the protocol.

If it was empty, that indicated she was probably extracting blood. That would make sense... compare now with before to see if there was any noticeable change.

In either case, he'd just smile at Dr. Adonidas and raise his hands in a 'what can I do?' gesture.

Finally realizing that Shione was kidding, Argent steps back again.

"We do, too, have a sense of humor," he snorted back at Shione. "A Caitian, an elephant and a barracuda walk into a bar..."

Athena says, "It's not a hypospray, just a scanning peripheral. Just taking some readings." She looks a little harrassed by the goings on, but also looks like she doesn't want to make a fuss in front of her famous guests.

Deanna reacts to Shione's report. "No, Lieutenant, you did not kill whatever it is that's affecting Lt. Dul. You merely defeated that manifestation. Mr. Atek and the Duls all saw it differently. It seems that whatever it is that's attacking Cassy takes an image from its victims mind and manifests as that. They each saw something different. The only thing they had in common was a monster guarding a portal. Atek saw an Iconian gateway, while the Duls each saw variants of antique Betazed doors and gates. What did you see?"

Beverly takes Argent aside and asks him whether he's felt any side effects from the treatments Athena has put all the members of the Gamma Station mission through. The only thing Argent has noticed is a dull ache around the sites where Dr. Adonidas had given broad spectrum innoculations and drawn blood. "I notice there are a few Caitians on Dyson Base. We don't have any on the Enterprise-E, nor were there any on the old Enterprise-D. I met several while I was at Starfleet Medical back in 2365, though. I can't believe it's been eleven years," she says, trying to distract him from the treatment of the others in the sickbay. "Your eye colour is somewhat unusual. I've seen Caitians with blue eyes before, but never so light and silvery as yours. Are they naturally that colour or are they implants? Our Commander Laforge has had implants recently, replacing his VISOR."

"I saw you kick its legs out from under it and jump on its head while we all struggled with it. You crushed its head and it died. We all got to our feet and it just dissolved into goo on the deck. Then everything went dark and we woke up here with Counsellor Troi guiding us out of wherever we were."

She is shaky,but they will have to restrain her, or she will go to Cassy's bed.

"That's when Cassy stopped convulsing, according to Hawkeye. He applied a neural block just as I beamed in. Since none of the other three Betazoids at Dyson Base have any medical or psychological training, we had the Enterprise go to emergency Warp and they got here a day later. Dr. Crusher and Counsellor Troi have been working since then to extricate you four from Cassy's coma-locked mind."

As Shione attempts to get up, Athena snaps, "Belay that, Lieutenant! You also have no training. Let the experts do their jobs!"

She lays back, her mouth locked in a stubborn frown, but Deanna can sense her grief at failing to save her sister

Deanna interrupts. "Dr. Adonidas is correct. You are untrained. While you did stop one attack, you almost died in the attempt and and also nearly got three other people killed. You were lucky that the Enterprise was on its way, as Dyson Base's medical facilities are far less sophisticated than those on a Sovereign class starship."

Athena notes, "Cdr. Troi is right—you were very lucky. Also, your system is overextended. Cassy is stable for now. I'm going to release you from sickbay overnight and we're going to try again tomorrow morning. Dr. Sormok is extremely well versed inthe use of mind melds, even though he himself has no medical training. He will be setting up the mind meld and Counsellor Troi will direct the psionic procedures. If, and I do mean if you behave yourself, you may be permitted to help, but if you don't settle down, I'll sedate you and have Ambassador Worf sit on you until we're done."

Dr. Crusher breaks off her conversation with Argent. "Worf is anxious to see you, Lieutenant. Deep in his 8-chambered heart, he likes you, though even he thinks you're sometimes a little... impulsive. Athena and I will release you only if you and your crewmates, and Cassiadora's crew, promise to be good little Starfleet officers and, as she says, behave yourselves. Go, take it easy, show your crews around and introduce them to Data and Geordi. Guinan is in the Officers' Lounge and has laid on a congratulations celebration for your new permanent rank, Lieutenant! Mr. Merawdr, I'm counting on you to keep her out of trouble."

It's only then that Shione notices they're not in the Dyson Base sickbay.

"Just a bit of soreness where I got the inoculations," Argent replies to Dr. Crusher, "but it's been fading gradually."

"Well, my name is Argent, which apparently means silver. My parents so named me because I was born with silver eyes. I don't think anyone ever suggested that it wasn't natural, though I've never heard of any other Caitians with silver eyes."


After the argy-bargy, Dr. Crusher gives him an 'assignment'.

"Yes, ma'am! I will certainly keep her out of trouble!" he said. To the best of my ability, of course. But... who's going to keep me out of trouble?

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 85):

"I nearly got them killed?"

She looks across Sickbay at the three and starts weeping

Atek snorts. "No, Shione, we went in of our own free will. And you did stop the attack. It all turned out for the best in the end. Just... well, try not to be too impulsive from now on. As an officer in charge of others, you have to think not only of yourself, but of those with you. And, yes, your promotion to full lieutenant is now confirmed. Congratulations."

Melisandra agrees, "Yes, we went in for the same reason you did. Out of love for Cassiadora." She reaches across and squeezes Nyle's hand.

Dr. Adonidas says, "Yes, yes, it all turned out OK. But it does go to illustrate one thing—when you have specialists around, even though you're the leader, you need to rely on specialists for specialist tasks. It's all part of team building."

Counsellor Troi goes over to Argent. "This responsibility goes both ways, of course. When you have advice for a superior, don't be afraid to bring it up. Your commanders may not have all the answers and they need the entire team to fill in the gaps."

Dr. Crusher speaks up. "If this love-fest is done, I'm releasing you all. Go, enjoy yourselves at Guinan's shindig."

Atek confirms, "Yes, you are all officially off-duty until 07:00 tomorrow. Commander Riker has laid on guest quarters for you all. You and your crews have a good time. Me, I;m afraid I have to get back down to Dodge. Enjoy yourselves—you've earned it."

Reaching the Enterprise-E's Officer's Lounge, Shione, Argent and the Duls encounter the reat of the Kitchissippi's and Cuyahoga's crews. Gian holds up a glass in invitation to them and Tony calls out, "Congratulations, Boss! Hey Argie, come on and grab some hooch. They got some great eats here, too. Hey, I wanna innerdooce ya to Mr. Data, here!" He seems slightly tipsy, though Argent knows that should it be necessary, the effects of the synthehol could be easily shrugged off.

Data is a tall, dark-haired humanoid whose gold skin and yellow eyes betray his non-Human origins. He stands and hold a hand out to Argent. "I am pleased to meet you, Mr. Merawdr."

"Hello. Please to make your acquaintance, too, Commander Data," Argent replies to Data.

"Whenever your name comes up, I usually think of a dozen questions I want to ask about you. Never thought I'd actually meet you."

"However, I will not bother you with them. I'm sure you've heard them all before. I do have one, though: cogito, ergo sum. How do you perceive your sentience?"

Data cocks his head. "Dubito, ergo cogito; cogito ergo sum. I doubt, therefore I think; I think, therefore I am. Sapience is a curious concept—fluid and uncertain. We define sapience, but we are sapient, so the question is 'Does sapience exist outside our own minds?' One is tempted to retreat into solipsism. Alas, that, too is a trap. It seems to be an unanswerable question, Mr. Merawdr." He pauses. "I'm sorry, Mr... may I call you Argent? I'm sorry, Captain Picard says I have a tendency to babble. If I may turn the tables on you, how do you define your own sentience?"


Meanwhile, Ambassador Worf comes in, wearing Klingon civilian garb. He spots Shione and strides over to greet her. "Lieutenant Kurasa, congratulations on your promotion. Qapla'! And greetings to you, Mr Merawdr." he says. "Guinan, two blood wines!" he orders. "Shione, I take it you still indulge. It is real blood wine. Being a diplomat has its privileges." He takes a large swallow of the wine and slaps Shione on the back.

"Thank you Lt Atek, for all that you risked and yes impulsive only when lives are at risk.
I do remember my command school training".
She stands leaning in over Dr Crusher,whispering "Thank you Bev for saving my Family" and she gives her a quick hug

"Doctor Adonidas, thank you for all you did to save us, and if I might point out. There were no experts at the time and I was not going to sit back and watch my sister die."

Shione does not wait for Athena to respond

"Deanna are you staying here or coming to ten forward with us?"

Arm in arm with Argent she heads off leading her mom and Nyle.

When Worf approaches she appears rapt in attention watching Argent and Data, and as he speaks he notices that she is suddenly sniffing the airsniff sniff Are you wearing perfume, Worf?

She accepts the bloodwine taking a hearty sip."Perhaps this is too strong for you now Old Timer" and she moves as if she is going to take his glass as well."Maybe they have some prune juice. Something a bit more suited to an older retired gentleman"

Throughout she is fighting to keep from grinning

Worf snorts and scowls. "You are as bad as Dr. Bashir and Chief O'Brien," he mutters. "You should have met Jadzia. She would have liked you."

He drains what's left of his blood wine. "I notice that you've gone back to Enginering. Are you slowing down in your old age, now that you're an officer?" He grins savagely.

Hey, says Tony, "She's captain of the Kitchissippi. You better watch your mouth." He waits a couple of beats then finishes, "Sir!"

Worf laughs heartily and calls, "Guinan! More blood wine!"

She grins back at Worf. " Ah I did meet her old friend, The Haida was stationed out of DS9, or is your memory also going in your dotage? " She refrains from mentioning that she attended the funeral as well.

She pats his belly with the back of her hand while draining the second third of her cup.
"Putting on weight are we? Are you planning to stay a bit. I have a gift for you down below in Dodge City""

[OOC: Nope. Only the Defiant and the Rotarran were actually stationed at DS9. During the final phases of the War, the fleets were stationed at Starbase 375, 25 light years away from Bajor. The Haida would likely have put in at DS9 from time to time, and interacted with the Defiant while Dax was on board, so it is quite possible that Shione did indeed meet her.]

Tony bows deeply and says with an insolent smirk "Aye, aye, BOSS!"

Worf looks amused. "Good, you keep discipline well. I have, indeed, trained you properly." He accepts the refill the steward has brought him. "Yes, I will be here for a while to inspect the operations regarding the BortaS. It has become a matter of great import to the Empire. Kahless himself has expressed interest."

In reply to Argent Merawdr (msg # 90):

Data inquires, "I understand that you had some interaction with the Kapecki Emissary Olivaw. What is your impression of the Kapecki?"

Shione pulls Worf along with her and heads over to where Data and Argent are talking
" Hi Argent sorry about addressing you as My Merawdr when I should have said lieutenent.

I am Worf's date tonite." She smiles, beaming over at Worf

Data replies, "Geordi is down at Freeman's Island going over their new power systems."

Guinan comes over. "Well, Chief Kurasa. Dating an Ambassador now?" Worf scowls. Guinan continues, "Letting your officer status go to your head?"

Captain Picard comes in. "Lieutenant Kurasa, congratulations on your promotion. I hear it's been made permanent. Security Chief MacAskill is retiring in a few months, and since Ambassador Worf has his hands full with his new diplomatic job, we'll need a season veteran to take over. I'm trying to convince Commander Samson to let you go. Interested?"

The evening goes well. food and drink flow freely, and Shione get reacquainted with some of the crew from her old days on the Galaxy class Enterprise-D, a surprising number of whom are still with the new ship. Eventually, all good things come to an end, and the party winds up.

At 0700 hours the next day, Shione reports to sickbay for Cassy's procedure. Waiting are the Duls, who have been here overnight, Counsellor Troi, Doctor Crusher and Nurse Ogawa, and Councillor Sormok. He raises his right hand in the Vulcan salute, "Greetings, Lieutenent. Your promotion does you honour."

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 100):

Well thanks Data, I'll see him later then. How about if you and Argent and I sit down, while we're still here and discuss the Kapecki with you.?"

When Guinan comes over she leans down and gives her a hug. "Missed you" she whispers, as Guinan had spent time with her during a tough time 7 years ago and Shione has never forgot.

At Capt Picard's suggestion she gives him a deer in the headlights look for a moment before squeaking out "Me? whew, you mean it don't you?" she recovers and continues Can I think about it and discuss it with my crew Captain?"

She stays with WOrf throughout the evening and arranges for a time for them to go down to Dodge the next day so she can retrieve his gift. "Good night my Friend" and she gives him a robust hug, before crawling into her rack and collapsing.SHe gets up early and has a full breakfast before heading down for 0700.

She is pleased with Sormok's greeting and returns the salute, Thank you honored sir, your recognition of me is a greater honor still"

She embraces Deanna nervously" Can you go over what you expect of me?" She directs her question to both Deanna and Sormok.

While listening, she embraces Melissandra and hugs Nyle <We'll get her back, be strong> She teeps to both of them

Dr. Sormok replies, "It is my honour, daughter. Although the experiment was offically discontinued, it will be fascinating to see whether it has borne fruit."

Counsellor Troi calls for everyone's attention. "We'll be beginning presently. We'll be using a blend of Betazoid and Vulcan techniques. The Duls, Shione and I will form a gestalt web with Cassy, and then Dr. Sormok will mind Meld with the gestalt through me. Doctors Crusher and Adonidas, assisted by Nurse Ogawa will monitor all our lifesigns. Once we've formed the gestalt and the Mind Meld has been initiated, we should be able to penetrate the defenses Cassy has erected and deal with her directly. I propose that once we're able to communicate with her that Shione act as the spokesperson, with guidance channel through myself. Is this plan acceptable to everyone?"

Meanwhile, Argent and Tony, along with the Cuyahoga's crew, sit in the waiting room and wish they could do something—anything to help.

While all of the psionic team lie back on the med-beds, Sormok seats himself at the head of Troi's bed. Troi initiates the gestalt  and the four members of the team find themselves in a large chamber, somewhat similar to the one they'd experienced before. Huge ribbed bony columns curve up the walls of the chamber, which looks like slick red muscle tissue. Throbbing red veins a metre in diametre pulse as the wend their way over and across the colums and a dark red viscous fluid oozes down from above. The ceiling of the chamber is barely visible in the shadows and the team stands in a hand-span deep pool of the fluid. In the far wall a wide staircase leads a couple of metres up to the same baroque door Shione had seen before. At the top of the staircase crouches a figure like something out of a fever dream—a huge female parody of a humanoid, biomechanical in appearance. It glistens a green-grey colur, slick and shiny. It makes a noise like scales slithering over dry sand as it stands, fully three metres tall. "S-s-s-o-o-o...," it hisses, "you've returned, S-s-sh-i-o-o-onneI Welcome to your inevitable doom. Hah-hah-hah-hah!" it cackles in a rusty voice.


The creature raises its right arm and beckons to Shione. "Come and die," it croons, stretching out the terminal word in a hiss like plasma escaping a fractured conduit. Shione uses her peripheral vision to check around her and finds herself utterly alone, the rest of the team seemingly having disappeared. However, she feels a solid, comforting presence behind her, though she dares not take her eyes off the deadly creature. It slowly steps down the stairs, reducing itself in height until it is exactly as tall as Shione, and strides into the gelid, foul-smelling fluids that surround them.

Strangely enough Shione feels no fear whatsoever. "I see you've chosen a more durable form this time." her tone is firm,calm and slightly mocking.

" So you didn't like the experience I inflicted on you before, Hmmn? You must leave or be destroyed. That is the choice I offer"

Shione is prepared to react to the scene,but in defense. A physical attack vs a metallic form would be a poor choice.

In her mind she speaks with Deanna <I'm going to call to Cassy as a Starfleet Officer.She has a strong sense of duty and I will appeal to that to awaken her. Do you approve?>

Deanna replies, <I'm not certain a physical attack is the best tack to take. Its physical form seems not to be its vulnerability. We must find the actual location of Cassy's psyche.>

Before anyone can reply, the creature springs at Shione. Shione twist out of the way, but the creatures claws slash past her face, clipping off a lock of Shione's hair..Shione feels herself slide into a form of 'combat awareness', where everything slows down around her and even tiny details stand out. She notes, almost dispassionately, that the skin is not metallic, as she'd originally thought, but some form of chitin, like an insect's carapace, mottled with bronze and green under the surface. As the creature overextends itself, Shione grabs its arem and propells it past her, using its own momentum. In that instant, she males eye contact and sees pain and terror reflected in its eyes, and suddenly realises that the creature is, in fact, Cassy; or at least a portion of Cassy's psyche. The fear in its eyes is instantly replaced with rage. <I'll kill you and eat your heart, bitch!> Screams Cassy's thoughts, deafeningly 'loud'.

The Cassy-creature rolls sinuously as it falls, coming back up onto its feet in a low crouch facing Shione. It skin drips with the dark red gelatinous gore, which looks more and more like half clotted blood. It smiles sinisterly. <Is that the best you got, sister-dear?> The word sister sounds like acid in her thoughts.

She kneels "I won't hurt you anymore. And I can't fight my sister. I love you Cassy.

Her hands are at her side and she is projecting her innermost thoughts, unedited at the manifestation before her. Love and regret for what could have been between them.

Cassy's avatar pulls its arm back and flexes its claws. It smiles, a cold, calculating expression of malevolence. <Then die> it screams mentally and plunges its claws deep into Shione's chest, up to the elbow... It cackles, a look of unholy glee on its features. As Shione stands impaled on its arm, a sudden look of puzzlement appears on its features. The form grows misty and begins to evapourate, leaving Cassy's form standing there holding her arm out witgh her hand flat against Shione's breastbone. Cassy's eyes widen and a cry like a child in agony fills the chamber. Cassy fades to transparency and collapses into the gore at Shione's feet. By the time she falls all the way down, she, too has evapourated. Shione finds herself alone, with the child's screams filling the air around her. Immediately before her is the flight of six steps, topped by the door with its chains.

Shione falls backward, bouncing off the door as if she'd slammed into a rock wall.

Outside the sickbay, Argent and the others are startled to hear a loud ululating scream coming from in the sickbay. Prashanthi exclaims, "That's Cassy!" and starts to her feet. Gian restrains her and whispers, "Easy, Rai. Doc Crusher and Counsellor Troi can handle it!"

Shione picks herself up from where she has tumbled down the stairs, She wipes the hlaf-clotted blood from her mouth and eyes. She finds Nyle standing over her, and he helps her to her feet. <I know my daughter,> he says. <Butt heads with her and you'll just wind up with a headache. You'll need to try another tactic.>

Painfully, Shione makes her way back up the stairs and once again finds herself facing the door with its heavy steel chains.

So Shione sits in front of the door and weeps. Her mind is completely open,no barriers and she is projecting her pain about not having a sister.

The chains on the door no longer looks so formidable. Experimentally, Shione touches the chains and they feel warm, like flesh, and fall apart in her hands. the door opens slowly. A blue light comes from inside. Stepping inside, Shione see that she's in a room with no definable shape. Delicate traceries of bright blue light chase themselves over the darker blue spaces between them. A pre-pubescent girl lies in the fetal position sucking her thumb and sobbing. She quivers with her crying. She looks up at Shione, her eyes puffy and full of tears. <Who are you?> she asks tremulously.

<I am your long lost big sister and I am here to take you Home, little Cassy.
Safe and warm home, with Mom and Dad waiting for us. Please let me carry you home safe. No one is ever gonna hurt you ever again. I promise.>

And she holds out her arms beckoning to the child, ready to hug her and carry her out of this awful place. And she lets Cassy see that, in her mind.

Cassy looks doubtful. <I have a sister? Do you know where Mommy and Daddy are? I'm lonely...> She steps closer to Shione and clutches her waist. Shione notes absently that she's wearing a nightgown emblazoned with an image of Flotter from the children's holodrama series Flotter and Friends. Nyle and Melisandra step out from behind Shione and the three of them share a group hug. Shione finds her eyes brimming with tears. Deanna speaks. <I think it's time for us all to return to sickbay.>

Shione once again finds herself in Sickbay. Nurse Ogawa is passing a medical scanner over her.

At the ICU bed, Crusher and Adonidas are standing over Cassy's still form. Deanna stands up and walk slowly over to them. Consulting briefly, she returns and says to Shione and the Duls, "Cassy is in REM sleep and all her vital signs have returned to normal. Dr. Adonidas thinks she's figured out what happened to Cassiadora, but she wants to confirm her diagnosis before filling you all in." She opens the door and ushers them all out into the waiting room where Argent, Tony and the rest are eagerly awaiting their news.

Sormok turns to Shione and says, "My daughter, I would speak to you in private."

She is a little shell shocked, but answers"Good .Thank you Deanna" SHe gets up, looks for a moment at her sister and the walks out into the waiting room.She will be alright."She tells them
"She is in normal sleep now and the Doctors think they know what happened but they need time to verify. And I need to speak with my Father, so you can wait here, or enjoy the ship's hospitality. I will make sure you know when she can have visitors"

She turns to Sormock, and speaking in Vulcan, bows. " I too would like to speak with you" and follows him to wherever he has chosen

Sormok guides Shione to a small private lounge. There, he takes a square dark blue candle from a cabinet, obviously placed there by him earlier, and turns down the lights. He lights the candle and orders from the replicator. "Computer two Vulcan spiced teas, and a dish of sliced favnit." The order sparkles into existence and he sets them before Shione. Sipping his tea, he says, "I am most impressed with you, my daughter. I have been informed that you resent my lack of involvement in your life and thus you harbour some animus against male Vulcans." He passes Shione the dish of favnit, which turns out to be 5mm thick slices of a stalk of some plant, about 50mm in diametre. Though the scent is spicy, the yellow fruit is very sweet, a sort of cross between lemon and pineapple. "I find this regrettable. Although your resentment of my lack of involvement is understandable, such prejudice is illogical. Your record with Starfleet is outstanding, and your loyalty to your fellow officers is most commendable. Most persons would have returned Cassiadora's hostility, but you embraced her as family and sought to help her. You overcame your step-father's defensiveness where his daughter was concerned and arrived at what promises to be the basis of a good relationship. Were I given to primitive emotion, I would say I am... proud... of you." He sips his spiced tea. Shione finds the aroma of the steaming beverage enticing, and finds that it tastes mildly of cinnamon and ginger.

"I have only met your mother a few times. during orientation for the experiment which led to your birth. Conception was, of course accomplished in vitro. The aim of the experiment was to see if Vulcan and psionic non-Vulcan mating would produce psionic offspring and, if so, how they would develop. Unfortunately, not long after your birth, the project was cancelled due to a change in bureaucratic and political priorities I was opposed to this cancellation, but at the time I was considered young and my influence was marginal. When you arranged to come to Vulcan to meet me, though my research was at a very important confluence of events, I made certain that certain personages among the Science Council were aware that the experiment was a sucess by publically acknowledging you and assifning my personal aide as your guide and tutor to, as the Terrans would say 'rub their noses in it.'" He finishes his tea and takes a slice of the favnit. "If you are willing, I am going to suggest, now that my influence has waxed, that the experiment be resumed and that you be tested for to confirm the viability of Vulcan/Betazoid interbreeding. The tests will mostly be done wherever you are stationed at the time by both Vulcan and Betazoid psionicists and psychologists, but my require you to travel to Vulcan for some of the more... intensive tests. Would you agree to participate? This would also allow us to define our... relationship."

Shione is polite and does already know of, and enjoy the spiced tea, though she had never tried favnit. She murmurs favourably as she tastes it.

As he finished Shione gathered her thoughts to respond.
" Yes as you have noted I do have issues with Vulcan males, especially those who I noted have taken one look at my ears, and showed what could only be called disdain for my obvious mixed heritage.

It is not illogical Father when as a person of two races, I see the marginalization occurring with others as well. That was the inherent flaw in the experiment, as the cancellation left myself, and likely any others who participated, left out of Betazoid society, and treated as half breeds and pointy eared freaks.

Shione speaks those words in the same tone as had often assailed her ears in the past.

Father, both Betazoids and Vulcans have a strong cultural and societal tendency towards honesty in all things. This results in prejudice not only on Betazed, but as I have found in pure Vulcans, especially males. So I simply treat them with the same disdain as I have received.

Thank you for your compliments, and I am pleased that you have acknowledged pride in me. I have sought just that from you for all of my adult life.
 Cassy represents a life that I have no experience with and I am eager to have a relationship with her.she shrugs
"Will it happen? I can only wait and hope for the best"

She draws a deep breath " I will tell you in confidence that I have received from Captain Picard an offer of a position of leadership here on the Enterprise, and I do plan to accept it. I will be confirmed in a few months as the Chief of Security here. So my feelings towards other such as those with whom I have had issue, will need to be amended, so as not to cast aspersions upon this ship and it's crew.

As to the experiment however, I do have two conditions for my cooperation and support going forward.
One, that the rearing and raising of all offspring, be in a nurturing and positive family environment, which is more likely to produce adults who will be a credit to both races from which they come.

She then stands and moves a few steps in front of her Father." My second is as important and completely personal".

She opens her arms in his direction "All my life I have longed for a fatherly embrace from you. So Father; please stand and draw your daughter into an embrace and hold her for at least a minute. I want a hug, Father."

Sormok replies calmly, "And yet you show no intolerance towards Betazoids. Vulcans suppress their emotions. If any Vulcan felt any such disdain, you would never have noticed it. Your appearance is well within Vulcan norms. Your ears would only betray your heritage to another Betazoid, whereas your obvious emotionalism tends to causesome Vulcans, both females as well as males, to maintain a distance. Vulcans find any open show of emotions extremely uncomfortable and in poor taste. This may be what you have misinterpreted as disdain for your heritage. As a child, Ambassador Spock was the subject of derision from other juveniles who had not achieved the peace that comes with the full embrace of Surak's teachings, but any adult Vulcan who acted in such a manner would be shunned by Vulcan society." He pauses. "Should the programme be reinstated, it will be in the evaluation stage to assess the sole product of the experiment—you, my daughter. Any further interracial breeding would be done solely at the discretion of the individuals in question, and it is only logical to assume that they would raise their offspring together, as you have suggested and as Sarek and Amanda did with Spock."

At Shoine's request for an embrace, Sormok pauses and says, "This... is not... something that comes easily to Vulcans. Mothers may embrace infants, but embraces between adults is something that only comes in the throes of ponn farr. However, as it seems to mean a great deal to you, I shall endeavour to... try." He opens his arms and allows Shione to embrace him, only slowly softening and returning her embrace as if afraid of breaking her. Shoine feels a feather-soft psionic touch on her mental shields, <Greetings, my daughter.> An image swims into her mind of the Vulcan IDIC symbol along with a newer understanding of its meaning: "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations." For the first time Shione knows what this phrase means to Vulcans. After what seems like a millennium, Sormok releases Shione and steps back. He takes both Shione's hands between his and whispers, "Peace and long life, my daughter."

" My intolerance for some betazoids is well known there. My foster parents are Gammazoids, An acronym I despise and I let anyone who uses it know that. Just as I did when Nyle used it once.It simply doesn't exist in Starfleet as Betazoids look Human and don't stand out like we do.
As regards my showing of emotions, I never learned early enough not to.

She sits back down, a contented smile on her face " IDIC, I think I understand, thank you my Father.
Alright if Captain Picard is agreeable I will consent and I am glad that I am the only one.
Not because I want to be unique,but I have often worried about what others might have suffered."

She and Sormok sit and talk for a time, about little things for a change.She speaks about losing someone she loved on the Haida and of her relationships with people here on Enterprise.

"Will you be travelling back to Vulcan with this ship?"

Sormok begins, "I will..."

The intercom beeps and Dr. Adonidas says, "Pardon my interruption, Councillor Sormok. Lt. Kurasa, please report to sickbayimmediately. Cassy is awake."

At the door to sickbay, Athena Adonidas is waiting for Shione. "Please come with me to Dr. Crusher's office, Lieutenant," she says.

Shione stands and smiles at Sormok. "We will have many chances to speak Father.Thank you for all you are doing for me"

She enters sickbay, follows Athena and sits where indicated "Yes, what is it?"

Dr. Crusher says to Dr. Adonidas, "Athena, you made the discovery, I think it's fitting if you tell them what you found."

Nyle and Melisandra look attentively as Athena begins. "Well, it was actually Nurse Ogawa who gave me the first clue. She discovered, while reviewing Cassy's lab blood work, an anomalous trace chemical in Lt. Dul's bloodstream. Upon researching the chemical, I found that it was sometimes associated with a fungal strain called (she recites a multisyllabilic name with Greek and Latin roots), which is known to have psychotic effects in some animals. It is unknown when or where Lt. Dul aspirated these spores, but it seems to have been before she arrived at Starbase 21. We have reviewed the transporter logs from the Cuyahoga and Starbase 21, and have determined that Starbase 21's transporters logged a reading consistent with the spores, but since they were not in the Federation-wide database of harmful organisms, the transport computers did not flag them for the biofilters. By the time she arrived at the Gamma Station and beamed over, her adrenal surge on realising that she and Shione were sisters has created the perfect stimulus to activate the spores and the biofilters eliminated the active fungus in her system. Unfortunately, the fungus had infected the left amygdala, which is a part of the limbic system within the brain, responsible for emotions, survival instincts, and memory. Luckily, this was in time to prevent the fungus from causing irreparable brain damage, but she began having a psychotic break which progressed as she became more and more frustrated with what she perceived and Shione's insubordination. When Shione refused her jusdgement that Commander Olivaw be arrested as a prisoner and instead recognised his diplomatic credentials, Lt. Dul's break with reality became complete and—well, you've seen the results. Dr. Crusher has just put her in an induced coma and is going to perform a neurosurgical procedure this afternoon to repair the damage."

Beverly Crusher continues, "The procedure will take a couple of hours and will involve replacing the left amygdala with a replicated copy of her right amygdala using a process developed by Dr. Toby Russel. Recovery will take about a week, and Cassiadora will be as good as new. She may, however, suffer retrograde amnesia going back as far as the initial adrenal surge, so she may not remember anything after Athena's revelation of her sibling relationship with Shione. She may also suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Deanna will be involved in helping her deal with her initial anger and denial, and we'll take it from there. Shione, Melisandra and especially you, Nyle, will be instrumental in bringing her through this crisis. Of course her regrettable actions during the First Contact with the Kapecki will be struck from her record and everyone on the mission will be advised on how to best deal with the whole incident by Counsellor Troi. Further, Dr. Adonidas is being promoted to Lieutenant Commander and a Counsellor is being assigned to Dyson Base as well as a Doctor of Lieutenant, junior grade assigned to each of the three outposts."

I'd say this crisis certainly highlighted some issues, but overall it was handled very well, with what resources you had at the time."

She stood up."I have a meeting to attend soon, but Mom,and Nyle, I would be happy to host you for a dinner in Ten Forward tonite. I think I will have a busy afternoon, so I will contact you later, alright?".

She bowed to the Doctors." Thank you both and Nurse Ogawa as well for your excellent work"

She exited the room and tapped her Comm Badge "Lt Kurasa to Captain Picard and Commander Ryker.

Doctor Crusher corrects Shione, "Ten-Forward was on the old Enterprise. On the E, the lounge is on Deck 9 aft. It's called the 300 Club, after a speakeasy in New York during the Prohibition run by a woman named Texas Guinan. Our own Guinan finds it amusing."

Melisandra links arms with Nyle and says, "We'll meet you at 1830 tonight, dear. Have a good afternoon."

Picard answers Shione's call, "Very well, Lieutenant, I'll see you in my Ready Room."

Nyle raises an eyebrow and asks her, "Offer? If I may ask, what offer is that?"

She makes her way to the Bridge and nods to the on duty crew.
If Cdr Riker is present she will ask him if he can sit in on her meeting with the Captain.

She will ring the Ready room chime

The XO is not visible on the Bridge when Shione arrives. When she signals at the door, Picard answers, "Come." When she enters, Riker is sitting across the desk from the Captain. He gestures to a chair and says, "Be seated, Lieutenant."

Picard glances up from his LCARS console and says, "Ah. Lt. Kurasa. As I indicated earlier, Lt. MacKinnon will be transferred in 90 days. To take over his post, you're going to need to undergo some advanced training—Department Head Training, Bridge Officer Certification and aa Advanced Tactical course. That's a lot of work in a very short period. Are you prepared to take on this challenge?"

Riker continues where Picard broke off, "If you do accept this posting, we will be transferring you to the Enterprise crew roster effective immediately. This will mean that you will lose your new command after only two weeks. To save time, the Kitchissippi will transport you back to Starbase 21 for your training, which will take 9 weeks and the Enterprise will pick you up on completion, after which you will complete your Tactical training on board. We'll be staying here for a few weeks to complete some of the upgrades to Dyson Base's new installations. You'll  be in command of the Runabout on the way there, bringing your command duration to a full three weeks."

Shione was on cloud nine and had to slow herself down when she almost collided with an Engineering Ensign who was carrying some environment suits.
Hmmn She's cute, wonder if....

" I am so sorry, here let me help you" she stammered nervously as she bent to assist in reassembling the pile of suits she had been carrying.

"Uhm, Hi, I'm Shione Kurasa and I will be back serving on board, in about 2 months. I wasn't watching where I was going and I'd like to buy you a drink later tonite to make up for almost knocking you into the bulkhead." The words came out in a nervous jumble.

The Ensign returned the smile and once she had the pile organized, started to walk away. As she did she looked back, remarking with a grin
 "I'm Clarissa, and I'm off shift at 2100 hrs.I can meet you at 2130 in the 300

And off she went leaving a gobsmacked Lieutenant.

When she gathered her thoughts she tapped her comm badge."This is Lt Kurasa to the crews of the Cuyohoga and Kitchissippi. Please meet me in 15 minutes in the lounge next to Sickbay. Kurasa out"

"Effective immediately I have rejoined the Enterprise crew and in about 40 hours the Kitchissippi crew will be taking My Father and I to Starbase 21 so I can begin my 9 weeks of training.
I will be replacing the current Security Chief here, a post that I am very familiar with having served as Lt Worf's second before I was sent off to Command school.

This is a personal decision and does not reflect on any of you. I feel that my "celebrity" status combined with the personal issues that came up during the Gamma base exploration would only get in the way of the mission that you all signed up for.

He wasn't sure what to think. He'd only been serving with Shione for a short time, so there really wasn't any great friendship that had developed. Perhaps the correct term was 'comrade-ship'... He liked her. He respected her. And now she was... leaving.
