The BortaS

SD 53108.12, 0800 hours, February 8, 2376, Flight Briefing Room, Freeman's Island

LCdr. M'Rel has just finished the day's flight briefing when Capt. Samson strides into the Flight Briefing Room and assumes the podium. "Good morning, Ladies, Gentlemen and Nivran. Lt. Swann will be working a detached mission with Lt. Talbot and the USS Seine. The USS Thames will ferry Dr. Keh'lef and Emissary Klaang to the IKV BortaS crash site in veng BortaSBortaS City. You will all be armed with Phasers Mk II, worn openly since Klingons expect all military personnel to be armed." She raise a hand in admonition, "Yes, technically Starfleet is not military, but these old-style Klingons don't see the difference as meaningful—to their eyes, Starfleet officers are warriors and warriors go armed. All weapons will, of course, remain on heavy stun cycle and used only as necessary." She taps her PADD and a standard map-hex appears on the wall-screen. It depicts a mediæval walled city with a river running past it.

"You will note that in the past century and a quarter The surviving crew of the BortaS have grown into a pocket kingdom consisting of the City and a network of towns and villages encompassing several thousand square kilometres. They have conquered a couple of nearby races whom they consider kuve, or servitor races. They do not use tlhIngan Hol, but an archaic dialect called thlIngan Hubbeq. Those who speak daHol will find it incomprehensible save for a few shared words, so please rely on you commbages. We want no miscommunications.

"Note in the centre of the city is the IKV BortaS' command boom, which managed to soft-land intact and more-or-less upright. Klingons being relatively good civil engineers, they managed to restore it to level and built a fortification around it."
The scene changes to an ærial view of the command boom.

In reply to Capt. Delilah Samson (msg # 1):

Jon raises a hand. "Are the crew members of the Thames, then, just playing the part of an armed escort for the Emissary and Dr. Keh'lef? Do we have any other duties? Who is the senior commander for this mission?"

"A good question, Mr.Clare. The Thames will transport the Emissary and Dr. Keh'lef to the city, where Lts. Nivran and Merawdr will be detached to act as their bodyguard and staff officer while the rest of you will liaise with our embedded SI agent, Cdr. K'Pok. As cover, he will pose as a local warrior acting as your guide." She indicates the screen.

"The commander is a Klingon Starfleet Intelligence officer who has been surgically altered to resemble the so-called fusion Klingons. Please review your briefing materials on the relevant Klingon physiological history. K'Pok's team is in BortaS City undercover and has been here for about a month establishing their bona fides. The crew of the Lena, led by Cdr. M'Rel, will be at the BortaS' command boom as the public face of Starfleet, while the rest of you will assume the guise of Klingon traders from out of town. Your commbadges will be programmed to use the appropriate regional dialect and accent. For the next two days, you will undergo intensive training in acting the part. Your overall mission will be that of reconnaissance, feeling out the attitude of the populace to the Federation presence and the mission to find a cure for the Augment Virus and apply it to the city's inhabitants. Lt. Swann has been detached to Cdr. K'Pok's team and may be working with you at K'Pok's discretion." She signals to switch off the viewer and asks, "Are there any questions?"

"Have we received any preliminary reports from Cdr. K'Pok?" asks Jon. "I am just wondering if we know how stable the current ... um, political situation is in BortaS City."
