Visiting the Archaeologist
=== Alicia and Jarrun ===

The two of you head out to the north of the town to where the archaeology dig is supposed to be going on. The ship is docked on the north end of the waterfront, so it's a bit shorter to reach the path. It's not quite a road, but a dirt wagon track that winds out to the few farms in that direction.

After asking a farmer about the site, he directs you to the hills slightly inland from the coast. It's about 4 miles to the site.

You come over a slight rise and see the site below in a shallow valley. There are half a dozen tents set up, with maybe a dozen workers digging and sifting.

Visiting the Archaeologist
Well, it could be worse. Speaking to an Archaeologist should be interesting, whether something came of it or not.

"Jarrun? Shall we begin?"

Jarrun nods and sets a steady pace as the two begin heading down to the dig.

"I like the idea of archaeology.  Digging through old cities, and the like, searching for the true stories.  I just don't know if I would be able to keep the practical side from the idea of finishing a story."

He indicates the many tents.  "So many people working, and most will likely only glimpse a few words maybe of the full story here.  I would be tempted to fill in the blanks too much."

He looks to Alicia.  "You might have a better chance at speaking to our quarry on an equal level.  If we can manage to find him in this maze."

Since he's a member of the Society, you got a basic description of the archaeologist. The nature of the site is such that pretty much anyone you ask will be able to tell you where the professor is working. You are directed to the Pictish House, even though there is no house there at the moment, just a large rectangular hole in the ground.

There are three people working there, and only one of them even comes close to matching the professor's description.

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
Alicia walked up to the large rectangular hole in the ground as if she were returning to it after having been here before- but not for very long. She chose to approach the one who seemed to be in charge. "Greetings, sir!

Finding anything interesting!?"

"Most assuredly, Madam," the man replies. "Innumerable Pictish relics. The tales say they lived in this area around a thousand years ago."

"Have you come to join the dig?"
he asks, eying her clothing a bit skeptically.

"I am Hestor Babington, the director for this dig. That's what we call it when we explore these ancient or long-forgotten sites."

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
Vilhelmas looked over the two newcomers with an eye to the way they were dressed. It was a bit too fancy and impractical for working at the dig site, and they didn't seem like they were that obtuse. So, clearly, they were here for some other reason.

He knew he wasn't wanted by the authorities, so they were probably here to talk to the professor.

"While we could use the extra man-power, Professor, I don't think they'd be all that helpful with their inexperience," he said.

"I am Vilhelmas Tomas. I see that you are members of the Society, so I would guess that you are here on Society business. I'm sure you are aware that the Professor is also a member. So am I."

"So how can we help you?"

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
Alicia was amused and smiled at the archaeologist, "I am Alicia de Larrocha, scientist, scholar, and professor, at the University in Altamira, Castille.

Archaeology is one of my interests, however I am here to ask you for information, rather than here to join you on your dig!"

She saw his helper or assistant looking at her, and Jarrun's, attire, "Yes, we are not dressed for a dig. But, still. Aren't you being presumptive in believing us to be without experience...sir?" She shook her head sadly. "Should explorers be jumping to conclusions, without evidence?"

She turned back to Babington and again smiled, "We understand that you were present when a sailor attempted to sell a pearl in a shop.

We are interested in that pearl, and hope that you can give us a description of that man so that we may find him?"

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
The man standing next to Alicia apppears of a type that would probably not normally be seen at such a place except as an unskilled laborer.  The casual observer would likely focus on his size and strength as his only assets in most circumstances.  But a discerning individual would see that there is more intelligence in this one's eyes than at first appearance.

"We approach the stories of old using different methods, but I suspect we are kin of spirit and passion when it comes to finding lost truths."  The blonde bows slightly to the two speakers.  "I am Jarrun, a questing Skaald of the Vestenmennavenjar, and fellow Society member as well.  While I do not have the formal schooling as some, my own wanderings have touched on a number of stories unearthed by others such as you."

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
"Yes, it does seem to have stirred up a bit of trouble," Babington replies to Alicia.

"Had I known so at the time, I daresay I would have paid more particular attention to the man."

He then replies to Jarrun.

"Perhaps we will get a chance to exchange tales, Master Jarrun. I often get clues to possible locations from skalds. Their tales are often oral traditions that stem from a kernel of truth."

He turns back to Alicia.

"He was definitely a sailor; he smelled of the sea, and walked like he was standing on a rolling deck. His hair was black, braided in the back. He was mostly clean-shaven, but hadn't shaved in a day or two. He had a gold ring in his left ear."

"I'd say he was 5'10" tall, twelve-and-a-half stone, probably 28 years old. An experienced sailor. Tanned and weathered skin... not quite an old salty dog, but working on it."

"Oh, and he had a tattoo on his left arm... an anchor with a snake wrapped around it."

"I do not believe he gave his name to the merchant, but as he left the shop, I heard someone call him Lucky, though I got the impression that he was anything but. The name was somewhat of a joke."

"We've been too busy working this site to spend much time in idle speculation," Vilhelmas adds, "though there are moments when what we to is tedious and does not require our full attention."

"It is only subsequent events that have lent significance to that one. Had the professor known then, of course..."

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
Hola! Lots of information. She had a small notepad ready and wrote as much down as she could. "You are very observant, sir! Thank you Mr. Babington."

She looked at Thomas, then back to Babington. "Good luck with your dig!"

She turned to Jarrun. "Shall we return to the ship?"

Re: Visiting the Archaeologist
Alicia and Jarrun return to the ship. It seems like it takes longer to get back than it did to get to the site, but then there's no hurry to get back.

The trip back is uneventful. As expected, you are the last ones to arrive at the ship.
