=== Samira, Seraphine and Alain Gerard ===

Finding the harbormaster is easy enough--it's the only building that's set on the water side of the waterfront, built over the water just like the boardwalk. It's even a two-story building, though clearly it's not big enough to be much of a house.

On the second story, there is a balcony that runs all the way around the building. There is an external flight of stairs that goes up to the balcony. The upper story has windows all around it.

She was glad to admit, if only to herself, that any of the other investigative options would not have been her cup of tea, although perhaps the archaeologist might have been interesting. She hadn't relish mucking around in the dirt, however.

No, visiting the harbormaster was a civilized course of action. Still, Samira was the sailor, more accustomed to dealing with harbormasters. She'd better let her take the lead.

"Should we just make a straight-forward approach? Just come out and ask him what we want to know? Should we use subterfuge for the reason? Wanted pirate, perhaps?" she said to Samira.

"Will my mere presence influence him? Well, other than exuding my natural charm."

Samira smiled at the Montaignian, "Well, very first thing we're going to do is pay our berthing fees, that typically makes a Harbormaster more inclined to answer any silly questions we might have. And you're natural charm should be sufficient, I wouldn't want to tip our hand so freely, or threaten the man who can cause the ship harm. And I prefer being straight-forward unless there is a reason to be circumspect, and I fail to discern one here."

Samira opened the door to the Harbormaster's building and waited for Seraphine to enter before her. When she followed, Samira shut the door behind them both and took in the room before approaching the Harbormaster. "Sabāḥul kẖayr, Sir. I need to enquire after fees for the Southern Wind's docking?"

"Greetings!" the harbormaster replies. "Yes, I'm Harbormaster Desmond Dulaine. I appreciate you paying your docking fees so promptly. It saves me having to send someone to go knocking on your door."

He walks over to a podium that has a ledger on it. He uses the quill and ink also there to make an entry in the ledger.

"Southern Wind, hey? I don't believe it's been here to Wandesborrow before. At this time of year, the fee is only 1 crown for a week. Not much demand for a berth right now."

"I believe you are correct, this is our first visit to Wandesborrow." Samira follows the harbormaster to his podium, and fished 3 Crowns out of her purse, and lay them on the counter. "One week's berthing, and pair for some answers for my friend?" She asked cheerfully, gesturing to Seraphine.

"Well, that's quite generous of you," the Harbormaster replies to Samira.

"Most answers to any questions you might have are generally public knowledge, so I don't see any harm in that."

"Go ahead and ask your questions."

"Thank you, we are friend's to Hestor Babington. He is an archaeologist that was working near here. He told me of a bauble that an Avalon sailor was looking to sell. It was a rather large pearl that seemed to be black as well. I figure that since you are one of the most important people in town you would have heard any exciting tales like this." Alain tried to speak matter of fact like the existence of a large Black Pearl was common place.

"Oh, THAT tale!" the Harbormaster replies. "Ever since the reward was posted, we've been getting a hundred such tales a day! Everyone has a black pearl!"

"If you let it be known that you are looking for a black pearl, at least a dozen people will offer to sell you one."

"If anyone had the Pearl, they wouldn't be foolish enough to sell it to you unless you offered the same reward."

"Hang out at any pub tonight and you'll hear at least one black pearl tale per hour. It was left to him by his great-uncle, or Mrs. O'Cleary's cow shat it out, or he caught a goldfin tuna and when he cut open the fish, he found the pearl."

"At least that last one makes some sort of sense."

"Professor Babington actually encountered the sailor offering to sell such a pearl," Seraphine responded to the Harbormaster's comments.

"However unlikely it may be that this sailor had such an item... as you say, it isn't nearly as outrageous as these other stories... we are bound to pursue the matter. For that very reason, we were hoping you might have some knowledge of this sailor, such as... what is his name, where is he from, or, more likely, what ship he was on?"

"Oh, I realize that is asking a lot, but perhaps you would at least be able to tell us what ships sailed on that day or the day after? Samira, do you remember what day that was?"

She winced at that point as the blessure was reactivated. It wasn't so far away that she wasn't able to detect it... to feel it... to hear the universe screaming in pain.

Lydie! Perhaps it was their sibling connection, or perhaps it was just their sorcerous ability... but she knew Lydie was involved. Oh, she wouldn't have created it herself, but she was probably near it. And she would attempt to close it!

"Oh! I must go. Something has come up! Please, Master Dulaine, if you have any knowledge, tell Samira!"

If it had been critical, she could have ported to Lydie, but she felt that was unnecessary. Instead, she hurried out of the harbormaster's office and made for the merchant shop where Lydie had been going.
