Re: Once More at Sea

Vasily figures that that should be an effective ploy, if the shop owner actually knows anything. Vasily continues listening, but looks over the rain gear, remembering how miserable it was to be stuck out on the deck during the last rain storm.

"Yep, you got it. I'm Tormak. Sure, no problem getting these supplies delivered to your ship by tomorrow noon," Tormak replies to Valentino.

"As to your cousin, you got that right! Although... anchors aren't as popular as they used to be. Sharks and dragons and mermaids are all the vogue these days. You'd be surprised how much a good tattoo artist can earn to turn an anchor into a dragon! Ha-ha!"

"Yeah, the Iphigenia was here in port two... no, three days ago. Captain was picking up some cargo for Rurik."

"And, now that I think about it, there was a sailor that may have left the ship. I only caught a glimpse of him, but he could match your description. I heard him tell the captain he had business in Oster. That's a village about 10 miles up the coast. I can't imagine what business he could have had unless it was pickled herring!"

Ah, great job. And, now, we can stand, well, walk, on dry land for a bit. Vasily finalizes his selection for rain gear and takes it up to Tormak and Valentino; "I'd appreciate if you'd add these to the delivery as well, sir. I was quite miserable the last time it rained significantly."

Re: Once More at Sea

Once outside the shop, Valentino asks the others.

"So, what do we do now? Do we try to follow Prad? Or do we wait for him to return?"

"I suppose the real question is: does he still have the Pearl? Does he even know yet that it may be the Black Pearl?"

"Do we even still care about it, heh? Is it the money we are after? Is it the prestige of finding it and claiming the prize? Or is it the possibility of what the artifact might be capable of that captures our interest?"

"The answer to those questions may very well dictate what we do next!"

Re: Once More at Sea

"I think we should pursue him; we have no reason to believe he will even come back this way. As for why I'm pursuing it; I simply want to be sure that it is kept from the hands of the various nobility and royalty of the various realms, especially those of my own country. If it truly does have the power it is reputed to have, the best that could come of it would be that it would become a crutch that people would constantly depend on, rather than handling things themselves. In the worst case it would be abused."

"I, too, have been making inquiries," Father Carlos says as he approaches the others.

"A couple of sailors offered to buy Prad a drink, but he wasn't interested. Even when they insisted, he refused. They said he seemed sullen, preoccupied... even dazed and distracted."

"This does not sound like the same Prad we heard of in Wandesborrow. Truth... I think carrying the Black Pearl around for so long is taking its toll on him."

"Nothing of power can survive in a void. The Pearl wants to be used... needs to be used. If he does not... apply it soon, he will be overwhelmed by it. It may even seek out someone else to use it or be used by it."

"So, yes, by all means, let us pursue him quickly, before it is too late!"

With their business at the chandlery complete, Vasily heads out and begins the new, overland, legs of their quest. "If he's dazed and distracted, perhaps, if we make good time, we can catch up to him before he does something unfortunate. Let's get going!"

Valentino was concerned that if they hustled too much, Alessandra wouldn't be able to keep up with them.

"Yes, he wasn't on horse, that we know of, but he's had a day's head start," Valentino replies.

"Do you think we need to take along some supplies?" he asks before they get too far away from the chandlery.

Re: Once More at Sea

With no one thinking they needed supplies, the four of you head out of Vendel on the North Road which actually starts out going west. Even here in Vestenmennavenjar at this time of year and this time of day, the road is not well-traveled. Any out-lying farms bring their product into Vendel early in the morning, sell it all day long, pick up any supplies they need, and then head back home to get there before dark.

So, it's unlikely that you'll run into anyone on the road, at least until you get closer to a farm or village.

Thus, you make pretty good time, walking at a good clip, easily avoiding any potholes and ruts. The day is reasonably bright, with only a few clouds. Temperature is warm, suggesting that it might get cold at night.

It's probably time to take a break for lunch by noon.

Vasily takes a look at the state of the others and sees that they are hale and still going strong. Good. Still, this is more of a journey than a sprint, so they should pace themselves. "Shall we take our mid-day meal? Give ourselves a chance to regain our strength so we can keep pushing forward?"

((OOC: apologies for another delay. Just had a bad week for posting. It started last Tuesday when lost internet--server was down.))

As the group pauses for a few minutes or so, they are able to reconsider their efforts so far.

Although there was no known reason for Prad to be hustling, apparently he was a bit agitated, probably caused by his possession of the Black Pearl, so he might have been moving faster than a normal walk just to burn off that agitation. Or... maybe the Black Pearl was pushing and guiding him for some reason... to some place... unknown.

"Yes, a brief respite would be welcome, indeed!" Father Carlos says as he sits down on a convenient rock.

"When I did my walkabout back in my younger days, I learned to travel light but always be prepared. While there was no reason to think that I would be so far from the ship for any great period of time, I packed a few provisions out of habit."

"Would any of you care for some bread and honey, or some cheese? If not, do you mind if I have a bite or two?"

He unslung the pack on his back and fished out the indicated items and offered them around, to Alessandra first, of course.

"Some bread and cheese would be nice," Valentino responded, accepting a small portion of each after Alessandra replied.

"I can't help wondering what draws Prad to this area. If, as Father Carlos suggests, Prad is being controlled or directed or driven to go this way, to what end?"

"It might be nice if we knew someone local who could tell us if there are any Syrne ruins in the area, right? Wouldn't that be what the Black Pearl would be drawn to?"

Vasily gladly accepts some of the bread, but skips the honey. "I'm not certain what the pearl would be attracted to. Perhaps such ruins would attract it, though perhaps it has a singular goal that causes it to be drawn to something that we're as yet unaware of."

"No one knows," Father Carlos replies. "It's a Syrne artifact. No one knows how or when any of them were made."

"Even the history of Black Pearl only goes back about 25 years. Before that, details get kind of sketchy. Tales are often contradictory and many of them are outright fiction."

"Until we catch up with Prad, we won't have any answers... and may not get them then."

"Exactly! And that's why we are here!" Valentino adds. "Every country's ruler that has heard about this pearl having been found has offered a huge reward if you bring it to them. That scares me! If it has even one of the powers attributed to it, it does not bode well for the countries that do not get it!"

"I do not claim to be above temptation myself, though I hope that I am. I suppose it depends on how powerful the lure of the Pearl is. I also will not swear to its destruction until I know more about it. There is much woe in the world, and if the Pearl can be used to alleviate some of that, then that is a good thing, is it not?"

"On the other hand, the price we have to pay may be too great."

"Even if it could be manipulated to produce great good, humanity would, thereby, become dependant upon something that they had no capacity to repair, replace, or reconstruct. And something that would, inherently, be unknowable and incomprehensible.
That, alone, would be a huge price to pay; to enslave mankind to some artifact for some level of security or succor."
