Rules & The Map (updated throughout the game)
Magic is dying, and the Magus is dying with it. We travel together to the realm of Umbra where magic was born.

Fall of Magic is a collaborative story game in the tradition of the fantasy journey where the landscape, hospitality, and exploration of our character’s relationships take center stage.

In Fall of Magic we take turns, one at a time, telling a small part of the story. During your turn, other players may contribute ideas, make suggestions, and act out other characters, but you get final say over what happens during your turn. We each also get final say over what is true about our own character.

On your turn choose a Scene and Describe the Scene from your character's perspective. This will be a new thread.  You may choose a Scene prompt that another character has already done.

You may invite other players to play their characters, or any NPCs. Before your scene ends Use the Story Prompt to add an additional element to your scene. A scene can involve all the other players, or may simply be a small vignette for your character.

There are special scene prompts in the game:

Story Prompts with a + symbol are Traits. After Describing the Scene. Select one of the Traits listed and describe how that is true about one of the characters. (Yours or that of another player) Then, write that Trait down on that character’s description.

A numbered Story Prompt is a Peril. Describe the first line as you would a regular Story Prompt. When you are finished roll a die and describe the result.

A % symbol indicates a Change. Before you end your turn, change or remove something from your character description. This could be your name, your title, or a Trait. Then describe why your character thinks this is true.

Format of the thread will be [#] - [Location]- [Scene].  So the first scene, if it happened at the Bridge, would be:  1 - Ravenhall - The Bridge

The player who started a scene has complete control over ending the scene. After ending the scene, close the thread and tag another player. Tag as a private line. Rules for this are:

  1. If there are people who haven't gone yet in this Location, you must "tag in" anyone who hasn't gone yet.
  2. If everyone has gone, you can tag in anyone you want, but you may not tag in the person that just tagged you or the person you last tagged.

On your turn, if you have already started a thread in this Location, you may opt to move the Magus instead, advancing the group along path to a new Location. You also may choose to take a Scene in the current Location, at which point the turn proceeds normally.

After moving the Magus, describe the new Location and its Story Prompt from the perspective of the Magus. Note that the "Current Location" will be removed and the "Next Location" will be updated.

Rules & The Map (updated throughout the game)
To do list for a turn:

1.  When you are tagged by one of your fellow players to start your turn, it's your turn! Yay!

1a.  If you have taken a turn in this Location before, you MAY move the Magus. Remember that we all travel with the Magus. This changes the Location for everyone. There is no going back to previous scenes in previous Locations. Skip to step A under "Magus."

2.  Look at the Map (final post of the Rules & The Map thread).  Choose a Scene from the list of Scenes under "Current Location." Note its prompt, that's what the Scene is about.

3. Bring it up in the OOC/workshop thread. Talk about what you want to do in the scene with your fellow players. Figure out what characters you'd like to see in the scene. If you want to do a solo scene without any other players, just announce your intentions and go to step 4.

4.  Start a new thread using your character.  It should be titled [#] - [Location]- [Scene].  Where "#" is the turn number (1 more than the last thread), Location is the thread location.

5.  Describe the Scene in that new thread from your character's perspective, keeping the scene prompt in mind (as long as it's addressed by the END of the scene). Include details and so on. If you want, invite players to participate in the thread, by either posting in OOC or using a private line  (both are okay). Players don't have to participate, so they're allowed to say no.  You can also make this a solo Scene if you want - skip to step 7.

6.  Create any important NPCs that you want to see participate in the scene ("extras" can be posted about using NPC. So don't worry about "Servant Boy 1".  If that character becomes important in the story later, we can make a new chracter for them.) Invite other players to post as those NPCs.  We are allowed to share them! But try not to step on each other's toes (coordinate in the OOC thread or in private lines)

7. Each scene has a scene prompt. It is your responsibility to see that the prompt happens in the scene.  You may interpret it however you wish.

8. When you feel the scene is done. Post a closing narration and close the thread. End the thread with a centered "FIN" to make it clear the thread is finished.  Tag another player.  Rules for this are as follows:
  • If there are people who haven't gone yet in this Location, you must "tag in" anyone who hasn't gone yet.
  • If everyone has gone, you can tag in anyone you want, but you may not tag in the person that just tagged you or the person you last tagged.

----Magus---

A. Look at the Map (final post of the Rules and map thread).  Look at the Next Location. Note its scene prompt, this is what you will be writing the scene about.

B. Bring up your intentions to move the Magus OOC/workshop thread. Talk about what you want to do in the scene with your fellow players. Figure out what characters you'd like to see in the scene. If you want to do a solo scene, just announce your intentions and go to step B.

C.  Start a thread posting as the Magus. It should be entitled [#] - [Location]

D. Describe the Scene in that new thread from the Magus's perspective, keeping the scene prompt in mind (as long as it's addressed by the END of the scene). Include details and so on. If you want, invite players to participate in the thread, by either posting in OOC or using a private line  (both are okay). Players don't have to participate, so they're allowed to say no.  You can also make this a solo Scene if you want - skip to step 7 in the first list.

E.  You can alternate between posting as the Magus and your character, but remember this is a scene for the Magus.

F.  Go to step 5 in the first list.

---- NPC Procedure ---

The game allows players to share NPCs.  Ideally, a player will be responsible for a particular NPC in a particular scene. So, player A can play Bob in Scene 2. But player B can play Bob in Scene 3.

NPCs are first up for grabs for players whose characters are NOT in the scene.

IF those players do not want to play those NPCs, then players that are in the scene can take responsibility.

Hopefully, we can hash this out more as we go on, and learn.
